Is anyone else surprised 50% of music bought today are still CDs?

[–]ikonoclasm 3 points4 points ago

That has to include overseas numbers. I can't remember the last time I heard someone say they were going to buy a CD. Hell, I remember the last CD I ever got: Red Hot Chili Peppers' Californication.

I've got a pre-order for the new Ben Folds Five CD sitting on Amazon right now.

Tool's 10,000 Days CD was really neatly packaged. Little 3D binoculars included.

Wasn't everyone shitting themselves on the front page about Bruce Willis suing Apple because he didn't actually own his iTunes collection and wanted to pass it on to his kids? So buy the CD, enjoy the artwork, read the lyrics, see whom the band would like to thank/shoutout to, note the location & time it was recorded, and actually own that shit. I love liner notes. Enhances the experience for me. On one of the more recent Motorhead CDs the guitarist thanks Strongbow Cider & Reese's Peanut Butter Cups. Guess what I saw him drinking when he came out to sign autographs after the show? Yeah, Strongbow. Trivia!

Katy Perry's Teenage Dream CD actually smells like cotton candy. Mine still does. Yeah, I like Motorhead and Katy Perry. A catchy song is a catchy song, shutup.

There's definitely other ways of buying digital media that doesn't involve shelling out money to Apple for no good reason.

Also, I totally want Reese's Peanut Butter Cups now. Thanks.

[–]johndeer89 1 point2 points ago

Ahhh, Good catch. That totally makes sense.

[–]TimesWasting 1 point2 points ago

yeah I was like "Digital/MP3 will overtake it aaaaaaaaany minute now...wtf we're in 09 already?"

[–]gringo1980 0 points1 point ago

Thats probably only according to purchases, if you included music from the pirate ship, Im sure it would be dominant.

I still buy CDs from time to time. I like the physical medium, and to support the artists (that argument only holds if it's a small artist without a middleman of course

Last CD I bought was Tool's "new album"... Lateralus. 2001?

I too wish it was a little slower, but I didn't make it, and I don't know how to go about doing myself, sorry.

Vinyl is only a little over 1%? I thought it was making a bigger comeback.

[–]Commisar 0 points1 point ago

no, it is still cumbersome, and the players are way too expensive.

A lot of fascinating stuff in there. I didn't realize CDs were already popular enough in the late 80's to snag nearly half the market. I don't think I even saw one in person until the early 90's.

Source?

[–]TheFAJ 0 points1 point ago

Is this number produced? Number bought? Sales $?

[–]MemeTLDR -1 points0 points ago

You know how I know this is a repost? Because I saw it in 2010 and because IT STOPS AT 2010.

[–]TheToiletDuck 1 point2 points ago

In my head i kept yelling "come on vinyl, you hang in there buddy!"

[–]soundtraq 0 points1 point ago

This is depressing.
