FWIW, these glasses were originally invented for medical purposes. Specifically, for patients who had surgery that requires them to lay flat on their backs parallel to the ground. They can't be tilted or have their head raised so to do things like watch TV or read a book with some degree of comfort they have these glasses (in different prismatic angles for different activities, FYI).

I know this because my brother underwent several surgical procedures which required that type of recovery and he had several pairs of these glasses so he could have something to do while he was recovering.

They are generally known as recumbent glasses. They were originally made for people who could not sit up (i.e. after surgery, paralysis, bed rest, etc) many years ago. I recently made a pair for an older gentleman that was in a wheelchair and constantly looked down, so the prism in the Rx displaced the images so it would appear that he was looking straight ahead.

However the prescription version would not be made in this type as far as i know. :)

I wish I had these to text at night in bed. Holding my phone up above me (I only have one pillow zzz) makes my arms tired, and laying on my side is an uncomfortable posture to text in. T_T

My brother had to wear these to see his school books and dinner plates when he broke his neck. The cast they put on him went from his chest, up his neck and then around his forehead & had his head tilted up so he could not look down. I put these on and they were actually pretty cool.

Gonna be honest here: I have NEVER been able to find a position in which I can read for any length of time. They ALL leave me with a stiff/painful neck or worse. What I have tried:

Sitting in a chair with the book down near my lap
Laying down with my head propped on a pillow
Laying on my side with one of my arms set elbow-out with the hand propping up my head
Laying on my stomach and propping my upper body up on my elbows
Sitting in a chair, twisting to the side with the book propped on the arm-rest
Laying on the bed on my stomach with my head/arms over the edge, holding the book below my head

I swear I will never be able to enjoy reading without a painful neck. If I didn't need prescription glasses to see, I would buy these things in a heartbeat
