The "Mighty Eagle" soars above the tree line. The vehicle was "open loop" -- navigating autonomously without the command of the onboard camera and flying on a preprogrammed flight profile. This NASA robotic prototype lander sailed to an altitude of 100 feet during another successful free flight Aug. 28 at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala. During the 35-second run, the vehicle was "open loop" -- navigating autonomously without the command of the onboard camera and flying on a preprogrammed flight profile. Once it reached the 100-foot mark, the "Mighty Eagle" identified a new, larger target on the ground about 100 feet away, took pictures, processed the images and safely landed. Today's test is part of a new series of free flights testing the robotic prototype lander's autonomous rendezvous and capture capabilities. Testing will continue through September 2012.

open loop? Holy shit, I can't imagine doing something like this without some form of self-correction.

[–]feureau 4 points5 points ago

What means open loop?

[–]alle0441 0 points1 point ago

Open loop means the controller uses no sensor inputs to correct for wind, momentum, obstructions, etc. I don't see how that is possible in this case.

[–]jesusabdullah 1 point2 points ago

In controls parlance, "open loop" means that inputs get turned into outputs without any feedback regarding the actual state of the world. For example, think of a light switch with the bulb in the other room. You flip the switch, and just assume the light turns on in the other room. In the case of this lander, it would mean something like, "fire rockets for m seconds at n% thrust, then for p seconds at q% thrust", naively.

"closed loop" means that errors are accounted for by being fed back into the control scheme. In the case of the light switch, if you can see the state of the lamp then you close the loop by being able to correct for errors by flipping the switch again. In the case of the lander, it likely uses 3 axis accelerometers and such to measure its orientation, and then fires small rockets to keep itself upright.

Thanks!

No way in hell were they doing that without IMU correction. I bet the article meant to say the vehicle used "dead reckoning."

[–]jesusabdullah 2 points3 points ago

I agree, the last video clearly showed auto-correctional firings of aux engines to keep it upright.

[–]FuzzyStretch 1 point2 points ago

As a controls engineer, I'm here to tell you that article lied. No way in hell that thing is flying without a feedback control system. I agree with hofstaders_law - article probably meant dead reckoning.

[–]JayGryph 17 points18 points ago

Man...I so hope that thing had a big speaker playing Ride of the Valkeries.

That was what I thought looking at it. Science is cool.

[–]shitterplug 7 points8 points ago

God dammit NASA... Mighty Eagle? Really?

[–]JonesyVT 21 points22 points ago

Yeah I thought it was North Korean or something at first because of the name. Then I realized it was actually working correctly.

[–]Astoundly_Profounded 10 points11 points ago

The countdown to your being banned from r/pyongyang begins.

[–]JonesyVT 1 point2 points ago

God I hope that actually happens.

[–]Atlai 0 points1 point ago

No way. The North Koreans would have named it LongaDong IV and it would have been longer. Much longer.

[–]new_math 2 points3 points ago

I think they just wanted to be able to say "the eagle has landed" once again.

[–]supermeerkat 1 point2 points ago

Named after Apollo 11's eagle, perhaps?

[–]shitterplug 0 points1 point ago

It's an Angry Birds reference.

[–]supermeerkat 0 points1 point ago

Ah! Thanks for that.

[–]xhosSTylex 6 points7 points ago

Niel Armstrong crashed one of these while testing. He ejected, and it exploded upon impact.

See here (crash at around 2:20)

[–]InsolentDendrite 14 points15 points ago

The lander prototype in the OP's image is a recent robotic one. You're thinking of the Lunar Landing Research Vehicle, which was built for the Apollo program.

[–]xhosSTylex 0 points1 point ago

I stand corrected. Admittedly, I didn't check out the photo in great detail before.

Now that I look at it, it bares almost no resemblance to the 60's lander. Oh well. Great photo though.

[–]OVdose 2 points3 points ago

Thank you for the new background.

[–]lonseidman 1 point2 points ago

It's got a beat and you can dance to it.

[–]asroka 5 points6 points ago

Just curious... what exactly is the lander being tested FOR? What will its mission be, ultimately?

[–]IronRectangle 0 points1 point ago

.... landing on stuff??

[–]asroka 1 point2 points ago

Thanks! That helps immensely!

[–]frazehaze 2 points3 points ago

Y NO VIDEO?

[–]goodbyesolo[S] 24 points25 points ago

[–]musjunk22 8 points9 points ago

"The eagle has landed" I bet that guy was waiting his entire life to say that.

[–]alphabeat 10 points11 points ago

I'm pretty sure he said "the vehicle has landed" sorry

[–]LooneyDubs 2 points3 points ago

[–]northenerinthesouth 1 point2 points ago

Fuck thats some sci fi shit, stuff like that honestly still amazes me, 100 years ago this basically would be witchcraft.

[–]Bit_Chewy 0 points1 point ago

Next ... hoverboards.

[–]northenerinthesouth 0 points1 point ago

haha not long now! I genuinely feel like we are living in the future though, i read somewhere that around 2025 we should have iron man style holographic computers in our homes, i dont think i will go outside after that..

[–]Bit_Chewy 0 points1 point ago

Eh, we'll have augmented reality glasses well before then - inside or outside won't matter.

[–]northenerinthesouth 0 points1 point ago

Hmm i guess, i still like the idea of having shit floating around you in the air you can move with your hands and stuff.

[–]Bit_Chewy 0 points1 point ago

Yeah but we won't have that without a screen behind it. You can't just make light turn corners.

[–]sknolii 0 points1 point ago

Sirs and madams, I'd like to introduce you to our new flying saucer.

[–]Velaxtor 2 points3 points ago

thank god this one didn't end up exploding. Unfortunately, the one exploding will get way more attention...

[–]bhamby 0 points1 point ago

LLTV?

[–]zombierobot 0 points1 point ago

Good, does this make up for them blowing up Morpheus?

[–]nhorning 1 point2 points ago

Ok, I'm back from work... How did the meme turn out? Oh, FFS... I'll do it myself. http://www.quickmeme.com/meme/3qrec6/

[–]lunex 2 points3 points ago

I WANT TO BELIEVE

[–]ultra_violence 1 point2 points ago

[–]nhorning 3 points4 points ago

Ok, I'm at work. someone else please take the image and make the meme.

[–]yellowoftops -4 points-3 points ago

I, for one, welcome our new robotic overlords.

[–]nhorning -4 points-3 points ago

FAKE!!!! It's obviously a model.

[–]hipnosister -4 points-3 points ago

UFO

[–]patsky -5 points-4 points ago

Wait, I don't get it. Why does it matter?
