Do note that all terms derived from term meta. edit: by this I mean the original term which u can look up from a dictionary.

The meaning has slightly changed in everyday use and evolved with the term "meta". If you game in RTS or play chess, you would know what meta gaming is. It's bascially like "I know that you know I like to do A, and so you want to use B which counters my A. So I C instead." Getting even more meta would be my opponent thinking "He knows that I know that he likes to A, so he knows that I will B to counter his A, and therefore he would C to counter my B, and therefore Imma D his C." etc

I think the easiest way to explain it is "self-referencing." Like the xkcd acronym posted earlier- the acronym was talking about itself. In the gaming subreddit example, there was a post in a subreddit talking about doing something to the subreddit.

Meta means having to do with the subreddit internally. If the subreddit was /r/fallout and somebody posted "Check out this screencap from in-game", that wouldn't be meta and wouldn't need a meta post. But, if somebody posted "We should change the flair in the subreddit" than it would be meta and need a meta sign to signal it as so.
