As someone who is set to be permanently laid off and has a 60% rejection rate on outbound resumes and a 39% flat-out-ignore rate, I can confirm this.

Which is better for you, rejection or ignore? I received my last rejection email, quite literally, 10 hours after I submitted my resume. I submitted it at 10pm. So HR walked in, opened their email, immediately said NOPE! and fucked me right then and there. Feels bad man.

I prefer the rejections because it gives me an idea of what to modify/tweak. I am job hunting in another city and the initial rejection rate indicated that nobody was reading the cover letter about my desire to move to the area. I updated my address on the resume to the one I will be residing in after the move and the rejections slowed down. I've made a number of other modifications in reaction to the rejections and further slowed down the speed at which the rejections come in.

And I feel you on the fast rejections - one organization that I applied with let you put in for multiple job titles with one resume. I threw my name in the hat for seven different positions which I am not just qualified for, but have nine years of experience in. I received seven rejection emails within twenty minutes. Since I was putting the resumes through after midnight my guess is they had an automated system doing it. A real live person never even saw my applications. :(

It was probably rejected by screening software. Basically it scans your resume for certain words or groups of words. Protip, look up a list of these words, copy and paste it into the resume, smallest size possible and color it white so a person looking at it won't see it, this way it gets past the screening software and will at least be looked at by a real person.

Edit: Can someone explain why this is being downvoted? It's not fraud.

I've found that the words or phrases they're most often looking for are the exact ones they use in the job posting. I am very selective in the jobs that I apply for, so I have time to tailor my resume for each position. So, if in the posting it says they're looking for someone who can "effectively manage multiple tasks simultaneously", don't write "experienced multi-tasker," instead, write "able to effectively manage multiple tasks simultaneously." Then, prove it with your resume. Another example of this would be to decide between using the phrase "office tasks" versus "secretarial tasks" depending on how they describe the work. The closer your resume matches the job description (simply by using the same words and phrases), the more likely you are to get an interview. Also, if you feel that you can't honestly use the words they use in their "looking for" to describe your experiences, then it's probably not a good job to apply for. I have applied for 5 jobs in the past year, I was offered a job for 3 of them, and I accepted 2 of them. I realize that if you don't already have a job, you can't afford to only apply for 5 per year, so it definitely takes some planning ahead. I worked in a deli for 3 years before I found my "almost" dream job.

Good points you should also include a cover letter that is tailored to the job as well. A lot of people, particularly recent college graduates are spamming resumes all over the place and many of these jobs have thousands of more or less equally qualified applicants. My trick can help your resume get past the automatic gatekeepers and at the very least looked at by human eyes.

It took me 12 long months to get my job. Now that I have it, I'm constantly terrified of losing it. It's horrible knowing that there are so many people looking for jobs. It's definitely a buyer's market out there for employment. They could fire and replace me by tomorrow.

I have had one phone interview and one in-person interview. The in-person interview seemed as if I nailed it, and HR called a week later for my references (I provided eight, all of whom responded within hours - two former managers, two peers, four subordinates). The hiring manager emailed me this past Wednesday to let me know the process is taking longer than anticipated but that she would be in touch soon so I am hopeful that I may have landed this position, but I also know that until I have a formal offer in hand I still need to keep hammering away with the applications and resumes.

Persevere! I took a job as a financial adviser with ING a few months after graduation. Great company, especially compared to other places you could end up as an adviser. I spent several months studying and got completely licensed up so I could actually start working...and realized I hated the industry. There were definitely some cool aspects but it wasn't for me. I quit after two weeks in the office (though about 3 to 3 and a half months after the offer because of studying/training). It took another six months after that for me to finally land my dream job as an analyst. In the end, getting licensed for ING is what gave me an edge for my current job, even though those licenses have zero relevance to it. I guess my message here is to keep your head up and stay positive, don't give up, and something will work out for you in the end. My story's not 100% happy though, I have to admit. My girlfriend had a job with shitty pay (but it was still a job!) that went under a few weeks ago. She got called into the owner's office one day and was told that the company was going out of business and she didn't have a job anymore. There were signs, but it was unexpected for her. The bad part is that it wasn't even due to the shitty economy, the company was just managed very poorly. Even with my increased income, the complete loss of hers means we're still stuck living with our parents and apartment plans are on hold until she gets a new job.
