You know, if I didn't think 96% of reposts were made purely for karma-whoring purposes, I really wouldn't mind them. There are a lot of posts that aren't strictly "Original Content" but are still original to me. I find the content of those submissions to be enjoyable, but often find the enjoyment tainted somewhat by the OPs wanton karma farming (an act that is sad in and of itself).

That's interesting. I guess I don't share that view on it, but it makes sense why you feel that way. In the reddiquette, it says that it's ok to repost content if you feel it hasn't done that great and can do better, or if you feel more people need to see it. That's why, since this one's only been posted twice, and once it went nowhere, and it only got 500 karma the other time, it's acceptable to me.

Not to say that OP isn't most likely karma whoring anyways.

It's not the points I care about, it's just perplexing that people can be so dedicated to attaining them. It's the act of obsessing over the acquisition of imaginary internet points is the issue with me.

I feel dirty after upvoting something that's later revealed to be a shameless attempt at karma whoring. It's weird, but I feel like I contributed to their unhealthy addiction. Like my upvote is somehow enabling them.

So I guess I do care about said points. Hmm.

I think I need to get off Reddit for a few months.

My grandpa is skyping his grand-daughter in Russia off his Kubuntu system. Whenever I fly anywhere, he sends a link with 20-30 links to various travel guides and tracks me live via plane tracking radars. He modifies incorrect wiki articles and was paranoid about giving his real name to the apple online store for his new iPhone. He's uploading books for my grandma onto their Kindle and listening to digital radio. He learned all of this from scratch in the last 10 years and yes, still keeps his remote controls in a plastic bag.

PS We put him on linux cause he was getting too many viruses :-) So that will forever be a problem, but I'm incredibly proud of him.

My grandpa writes HTML in a text editor, brought me on to programming, is giving internet courses to seniors, once had his photo made the Reddit frontpage, and last time I sent him a browser-based realtime 3D visualization converting MIDI to beautiful graphics, he replied that the "music quality was disappointingly low compared to his classical CDs".
