That image quality is going to be terrible.

[–]Almondcoconuts 6 points7 points ago

Don't the rmbp's have 720p webcams now? You could technically shoot a movie...

[–]DigitalChocobo 39 points40 points ago

720p is less than 1 MP. Most cameras can pull that off. I don't know what mega-pixelage the MBP webcams have.

The issue is that if you use a pure 1:1 pixel correspondence, it ends up looking grainy. If you want 720x1280 to look good, you should use a camera that can process something a lot higher than that and then scale it down.

On top of that, the number of pixels a camera can capture isn't a perfect indicator of quality either. Not all 5 MP cameras are equal, and a good 5 MP camera could produce pictures that look better than those from a 6, 7, or 8 MP camera.

TLDR: A camera that is capable of 720p can still have really bad picture quality.

[–]walgman 16 points17 points ago

Cameras are getting cheaper and cheaper but a good lens still costs a fortune.

[–]Varconis 0 points1 point ago

Would you say this is true for the current iPod touch?

[–]thenewperson1 1 point2 points ago

Yep.

[–]kiddfroster 1 point2 points ago

It's more than true, since the sensor isn't even true 720p. It's 960x720 scaled up in hardware.

[–]audiotechnica -1 points0 points ago

It applies to both video and stills.

[–]longshot2025 8 points9 points ago

But the focus has to be awful.

[–]Almondcoconuts 4 points5 points ago

Tell that to the guy at the concert with the macbook air

[–]longshot2025 2 points3 points ago

I'm confident he'll discover that on his own soon enough

[–]ofcoursemyhorse 0 points1 point ago

let alone get the tilt wrong and you have a nice video of some guys head or the sky

[–]wheehahahahoo 1 point2 points ago

That is not something to joke about.

[–]ElSherberto 0 points1 point ago

But it would be awful quality. Number of pixels isn't everything. My cheap point-and-shoot camera has 1080p resolution video, but it can't hold a candle to what would be considered an entry-level camera for cinematic-grade filming.

[–]kiddfroster 0 points1 point ago

All Macs now have a 720p webcam.

[–]transfuse 0 points1 point ago

99% sure that's an 11" Air.

[–]imahotdoglol -1 points0 points ago

technically shoot a movie?

high-end movies are normally shot at 4K

[–]kiddfroster 0 points1 point ago

Well, home movies?

[–]SirDerpingtonThe3rd -1 points0 points ago

A small handful, most of which look worse than 2k Arri Alexa footage.

[–]mancxvi 40 points41 points ago

[–]erlingur 16 points17 points ago

The picture is taken with the phone, the iPad is on using the back camera and the laptop is looking at the whole setup.

Right?

(This took me an embarrassing amount of time to process)

[–]mancxvi 2 points3 points ago

Correct. If I had three hands I'd do it in a mirror.

[–]djslim21 1 point2 points ago

the only time i will ever upvote a duckface

[–]PolarisBears 165 points166 points ago

Good god, iPads are already a step too far, but this is a whole new level.

[–]SecretCobraz 14 points15 points ago

The only time I have done this was to make signs for esports events. Using the Air as a video recorder is just stupid.

[–]PolarisBears 2 points3 points ago

That was awesome.

[–]SecretCobraz 0 points1 point ago

Thanks

[–]Gui_letters 8 points9 points ago

I've never understood why using an iPad as a camera was a bad thing. I have a shitty phone and an iPad, so fuck me, right? I'm just not going to have my DSLR on me at every available moment.

Edit To clarify, when I wrote this I completely forgot about the context of using the iPad in the OP. Don't worry, I hate people taking photos at concerts as much as the next guy.

[–]wildcard1992 12 points13 points ago

I think it's fine as long as you don't use it at concerts. A regular camera or phone is already irritating enough and an iPad is just ridiculous.

[–]Gui_letters 4 points5 points ago

I forgot that the context of this post was the concert. That guy is a dick.

[–]eightfivezero 31 points32 points ago

But your iPad?

[–]saachi 19 points20 points ago

I mean, just because it has a camera, doesn't mean you take photos with it...hang on a sec.

[–]eightfivezero 24 points25 points ago

He said that he's not going to have his DSLR on him all the time and I was wondering if he has his iPad on him all the time. The thing I'm curious about is, if you're going to watch a concert and plan on taking photos, do you really rather bring your iPad and not your DSLR?

[–]ketsugi 6 points7 points ago

Don't concert security staff usually prevent people from bringing DSLRs in?

[–]genna_TALL_warts 16 points17 points ago

Shouldn't they prevent people from bringing in iPads?

[–]ketsugi 7 points8 points ago

Presumably an iPad is easier to conceal than a DSLR? I dunno.

[–]groberts1980 3 points4 points ago

No, why would they do that?

[–]Gui_letters 4 points5 points ago

You just need to walk in with confidence and a large enough lens.

[–]constipated_HELP 7 points8 points ago

As a photojournalist, I'll tell you that a concert is just about the only place that doesn't work. Concerts are extremely locked down and everyone with "professional looking" equipment needs a pass and is limited to a small amount of shooting time (usually under 20 minutes).

[–]beedogs 5 points6 points ago

and it's usually the first two or three songs. everyone ends up taking the same damn shots.

[–]skalpelis 2 points3 points ago

A Leica could easily pass for a point-and-shoot.

[–]XaroXhoanDucksauce 0 points1 point ago

I had a backstage pass to a Trews concert once. After they were done and back in their trailer, I took my pass off because my neck was sweating. Security was on me instantly.

[–]ketsugi 0 points1 point ago

Press pass might help, presumably

[–]Gui_letters 1 point2 points ago

Security tends to be lax here in Ireland.

[–]cardfire 1 point2 points ago

It doesn't in America. Flying through any major airport involves a colonoscopy.

[–]ThatMovieAboutRobots 1 point2 points ago

(that's what she said)

[–]SilverTM 3 points4 points ago

Is that a DSLR in your pants or are you just happy to see me?

[–]groberts1980 1 point2 points ago

Unless you have a press pass, you can't bring in a dedicated camera. I believe it's up to the band, but most of the time no professional cameras are allowed inside. Professional camera means you plan on taking photos that you can make money off of. Same goes for recording equipment.

[–]constipated_HELP 5 points6 points ago

The band doesn't usually care. Their record company does, however.

[–]groberts1980 1 point2 points ago

Ah, that must be it then. Whoever enforces these things tends to blame it on the band, but it makes sense they wouldn't care but would be receiving direction from the label.

[–]beedogs 1 point2 points ago

That's what smaller cameras are for.

[–]kiddfroster 1 point2 points ago

Usually is the keyword here. Smaller venues tend to be more lenient as long as you're not being obnoxious.

[–]anachronic 1 point2 points ago

Yeah, but think of all the bragging he can do to chicks at a concert when he whips out an iPad.

[–]Gui_letters 2 points3 points ago

Don't worry, I don't take any photos at concerts at all, nor would I bring an iPad to one. I'm just that I usually have my iPad on my person, in a messenger bag or whatever. Caring a DSLR is a whole different ballgame, it's just not something I do every day of the week.

If I see something that merits a photo in my day to day life, what's the best camera to use? The one I have on me.

*I forgot that the context of this post was the concert. That guy is a dick.

[–]loulan 1 point2 points ago

Way more often?

[–]dazonic 4 points5 points ago

I know a guy who filmed a helicopter taking off with his iPad. Chopper crashed, killing both occupants, the video was all the ATSB had to go on to solve the mystery of the crash, which they did.

[–]Gui_letters 15 points16 points ago

What's the best camera to use? The one you have on you.

[–]groberts1980 3 points4 points ago

My wife has a retail store and we both have iPhone 4's. I bought the new iPad which has a better camera. We bought a tripod and iPad mount and use the iPad for photographing new products to put on our web store. It has a decent camera in it and we didn't see a need to purchase a dedicated store camera for what we needed. I don't get the hate in using iPads as cameras. Especially if you take it with you everywhere...

[–]anachronic 5 points6 points ago

It's not about using it as a camera, but about being a douche that holds the thing up at a concert for 20 minutes straight and blocks everyone's view behind you of the show.

Kids are WAY too dependent on their toys these days... why can't everyone turn their damn toys off and just enjoy the show?

It's like some people can't enjoy activities unless they are constantly taking photos so that they can later brag to all their Facebook acquaintances about how cool they are.

[–]groberts1980 0 points1 point ago

I fully agree with you. I'm definitely of the opinion that concerts should be enjoyed, not video'd or photographed. But there is definitely a group that actively harps on people using iPads as cameras, and that I think is childish.

[–]anachronic 1 point2 points ago

There are groups that actively harp on anyone that uses any Apple product for any reason. Fuck em... the anti-fanboys are just as annoying as the fanboys.

Sent from my iMac

[–]groberts1980 0 points1 point ago

Agreed. I used to be one of those people years ago before I realized how much better Apple computers are than PCs. Now that I'm on the other side, I realize how much worse the PC people are. Sure the Mac fanboys are annoying too, but the PC fanboys are just assholes. They're straight up mean about the debate.

[–]anachronic 2 points3 points ago

I agree. To me, a computer is just a tool that I use to get a job done. I could care less what logo is on it if it works well. Anyone who thinks that your choice of computer makes a statement about your personality is an idiot.

I have a Windnows 7 laptop for work... it's a solid machine and gets the job done. I've got no complaints.

At home, I have an iMac.

Back in college, I ran Debian Linux as my desktop for a good 4-5 years on this rag-tag Frankenstein home-built machine that I pieced together.

If some new OS comes around in the future that I like, I may run that.

[–]Gui_letters 8 points9 points ago

I think it's funny. People complaining about others using a particular camera.

[–]groberts1980 0 points1 point ago

It's hilarious. But then this is Reddit. The hive mind tends to hate one thing with the same gusto they love another (bacon) for however long. Right now it tends to be taking photos with iPads. To hell with the fact that it has a very capable camera on the back.

[–]kiddfroster 1 point2 points ago

I think the key point here is that the pictures are being taken at a concert, and it obstructs the view of everyone behind them unless you are really tall.

[–]klaiere 2 points3 points ago

Reminds me of a guy at the last graduation I had to go to who staked out the best spot with a flip camera with telephoto attachment, lens hood, tripod, and remote control....

[–]Gui_letters 3 points4 points ago

By any chance... was he the photographer?

[–]Oiman 0 points1 point ago

I wouldn't buy it because it has a camera, but if I really wanted to snap something and only had an iPad on me, I definitely wouldn't hesistate to use it. (Unless I was blocking the view of a few hundred people with it)

[–]Gui_letters 0 points1 point ago

Yeah, I forgot about the context of this thread. iPad in front of hundreds of people is a dick move.

[–]popeyoni 1 point2 points ago

Because not only does it block the view of those behind you, it also makes you look like a complete dork.

[–]anachronic 0 points1 point ago

Because it's blocking the view for a bunch of people behind you.

Also, what's wrong with just paying the fuck attention to the show and not taking 200 pics and 20 crappy videos so you can brag about them on Facebook?

If you want to see video of it, just google it a couple days after and you'll see a ton of other people have uploaded crappy iPhone clips to youtube that you can watch.

[–]Gui_letters 0 points1 point ago

When I wrote that, I completely forgot about the context of the post.

I'm in complete agreement with what you're saying. I was talking about using the iPad as a camera in a much broader context.

[–]obviouslyireddit 0 points1 point ago

I think this guy should leave his iPad at home, enjoy the concert and look for photos on Twitter the next day.

[–]Gui_letters 0 points1 point ago

True that. Could be said for a lot of people.

[–]kingssman 1 point2 points ago

If recording home video. I prefer the iPad over a phone or my compact camera. Why? Well shooting video holding the iPad seems more stable. Turns out holding a steering wheel size device with two hands creates smooth camera movements, better framing, the large lcd is pretty much a 1:1 ratio of output format allowing better framing of the scene.

Far superior can video recorded using noodle wrist iPhone that shakes with every pulse that goes through your wrist on a tiny lcd that you are either squinting to see or ignore completely.

[–]chrisogino 19 points20 points ago

Better than an iMac, with an extension cord.

[–]longshot2025 19 points20 points ago

Would be more impressive.

[–]ShotSkydiver 8 points9 points ago

27" model

[–]cmelbye 16 points17 points ago

Laptops have had webcams for many years now, so I think it's safe to say that it didn't "catch on".

[–]thecoffee 30 points31 points ago

I'm just shocked no one steals these people's shit.

[–]SortaBeta 20 points21 points ago

Or some asshole in the back throwing his beer at the laptop because it's in the fucking way.

[–]howerpower 10 points11 points ago

he wouldn't be an asshole.

[–]Faronious 71 points72 points ago

Unfortunately, Wearing ones hat backwards is considered fashionable in some circles.

[–]keetz 7 points8 points ago

[–]ch00f 2 points3 points ago

Are you even mad?

[–]navjot94 19 points20 points ago

Ah, the ol' red...ah fuck it.

[–]aceslick911 9 points10 points ago

You mean the Ol' Reddit Switcharoo? (Bon Voyage!)

[–]navjot94 15 points16 points ago

[–]goatworship 2 points3 points ago

Was 7 months ago really the most recent one? Dark times of late.

[–]10FootPenis 2 points3 points ago

I've definitely seen it more recently than that.

[–]goofy_goober77 2 points3 points ago

I'm new here

[–]aceslick911 5 points6 points ago

Well we popped that switcharoo cherry ;)

[–]craic_lads 1 point2 points ago

I'm gonna be late for my first job interview in months. Fuck it, worth it.

[–]ieatcows 1 point2 points ago

[–]emlyn 9 points10 points ago

This is exactly why Apple has never invited Leo Laporte to another event again:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=igwL9HmyeUs

[–]owlman84 2 points3 points ago

I was scrolling, hoping to see someone else that thought this. Upvote for you!

[–]Shorties 2 points3 points ago

Wow I can't believe Leo did that, he should have just run a a phone camera streaming from his pocket.

[–]5loon 37 points38 points ago

[–]hairyknuckle 9 points10 points ago

[–]justguessmyusername 7 points8 points ago

I'd love to see some tasteful nudes shot in this fashion.

[–]CheesusDairyMessiah 9 points10 points ago

I dunno man, I think hip-hop is here to stay.

[–]soupdumpring 4 points5 points ago

"macbook air-ing"

[–]Yofoo 10 points11 points ago

this is when you accident knock the laptop out of his hands on purpose

[–]mickeythesquid 2 points3 points ago

Yeah, an MBA at a concert would be an awesome ground score! Until you get arrested...

[–]perfectsound 5 points6 points ago

Leo?

[–]progamer7100 6 points7 points ago

The iPad as camera fad was terrible enough, just please no.

[–]Baryn 13 points14 points ago

I'm only seeing this happen more and more. It isn't a fad, not yet.

[–]boon420 6 points7 points ago

He's obviously in denial, pretending it's already over and it won't get any worse. Poor guy...

[–]kiddfroster 0 points1 point ago

I don't blame him.

[–]derpee 2 points3 points ago

WHY DO PEOPLE LIVE THEIR LIFES THOROUGH THE LENS OF THEIR CAMERAS INSTEAD OF EXPERIENCING IT FIRST HAND?!

[–]anachronic 2 points3 points ago

Because they want to post on Facebook to get internet awesome points.

Can you imagine kids doing something these days WITHOUT posting all about it on Facebook and twitter? Inconceivable!

[–]MrKequc 0 points1 point ago

This is why there will be a very strong fad involving those video camera eye window things. They will come swiftly and be everywhere for upwards of several months straight.

[–]kcg5 7 points8 points ago

Looks fake... Shopped?

[–]beffaliza -3 points-2 points ago

My thoughts exactly!

[–]jigga19 0 points1 point ago

Thirded.

[–]RichB93 2 points3 points ago

What a tit.

[–]escK 1 point2 points ago

[–]Cheesecurls 2 points3 points ago

Why is the rapper wearing east German uniform top?

[–]LetsGo_Smokes 0 points1 point ago

I don't think it's East German. Their flag was only plain three barred colors for ten years (49-59) and afterwards they placed the East German coat of arms in the center of the flag (a compass and a hammer surrounded by rye). Seen here

I have a german military jacket that I wear often. It's of a flectern pattern. It has velcro and whatnot on it. After researching to the best of my ability it's a West German 1990's jacket. But a lot of people think it's East German in origin.

[–]H3000 0 points1 point ago

So the black guy with the microphone is definitely a rapper?

[–]JoshuaQuail 2 points3 points ago

i'm afraid you're too late, idiocy is rampant.

[–]Baryn 2 points3 points ago

This is exactly why wearable computing is going to explode. People want the ability to use a computer constantly, and smartphones fall short on several levels. Imagine glasses that simulate a translucent 50" screen, and gloves that allow for even greater than mouse-keyboard level of control with minimal physical movement. Whoever breaks into this market first will be the next god of tech.

[–]footpole 3 points4 points ago

I don't want my clothes to explode!

[–]iDVD 2 points3 points ago

Google Goggles?

[–]M3NDOZA 0 points1 point ago

It looks fake...

[–]bottleface[S] 4 points5 points ago

It was from the Made in America tour in Philadelphia.

[–]TheAngryBlueberry 0 points1 point ago

How is it? I'm considering going. I'm only from chestnut hill so it's a small drive.

[–]bottleface[S] 2 points3 points ago

It killed cell phone service in the Fairmont/Art Museum area. Whole lotta people

[–]tricil 3 points4 points ago

Well with people uploading videos from their laptops, no wonder 3G was down!

[–]TheAngryBlueberry -1 points0 points ago

Oh my, I'm so sorry!

[–]matt2053 -2 points-1 points ago

Not sure why you were downvoted. It's an obvious fake. The right arm is too big and out of position to be attached to the gentleman it at first seems to belong to.

Edit: ok I take it back. I can't tell for sure.

[–]spsheridan 0 points1 point ago

If everyone were holding those up to take vid/photos, the subject would not be viewable.

[–]anachronic 0 points1 point ago

Yeah, but think about all the status updates that dude can make on Facebook and twitter, talking about how cool he is!!

[–]alexsummers -1 points0 points ago

Was this Saturday in Philly? D'angelo?

[–]HonziPonzi 1 point2 points ago

it doesn't even look on ಠ_ಠ

[–]kiddfroster 0 points1 point ago

Well, the backlight is easily drowned out by the sunlight.

[–]giveitago 0 points1 point ago

The guy on the right in the red hat looks like a sim.

[–]lspurka 0 points1 point ago

I am guilty of doing this.

[–]WestonP 1 point2 points ago

It's Stanley from The Office!

[–]mmspero 1 point2 points ago

And I thought iPads were the dumbest way to take photos... guess you can't predict the stupidity of the general public sometimes.

[–]the_hunger 0 points1 point ago

i agree! there are waaaaaay too many white people there!

[–]Nilla_Wafers 0 points1 point ago

I'm afraid this has been going on for a long time. Look at all the suburban white people at a rap concert.

[–]gimpwiz -1 points0 points ago

I hope it does, so I have more ammunition for laughter.

I did see a guy doing it with an ipad the other day and nearly died.

[–]alxalx 0 points1 point ago

Shit, I have a friend who took his mbpro on a katamaran to hawaii to use it as a camera. It survived, but I won't let him live that one down.

[–]DoctorMiracles -1 points0 points ago

You don't get it, he's offering it to the artist to sign...

And I look forward to the near future, where all live event audience areas are nothing but a sea of bigger, 16:9 iPhone 5s... and everybdoy shoots video vertically ಠ_ಠ

[–]VoodooRush -2 points-1 points ago

I hope it does, beacuse I love seeing people like you whine about it.

[–]coolrific 0 points1 point ago

I dont care what anyone says, this is awesome

[–]SirElton 1 point2 points ago

This has been done before at a speech by Obama in Berlin:

http://www.cbc.ca/gfx/images/news/photos/2008/07/24/obama-berlin-cp-5226108.jpg

[–]mtme -1 points0 points ago

You hope photoshopping pictures doesn't catch on?

[–]Epsilon707 0 points1 point ago

I hope Mac Pro's become this.

[–]kwyjibohunter 0 points1 point ago

I was at a concert recently where a kid was watching the whole show throw the video recording he was making with his 3D camera phone. Meanwhile, the concert was already in 3D for me.

[–]DaftPunkJustice 0 points1 point ago

You have nothing to worry about, it definitely won't catch on. iPads at concerts are one thing, but laptops... Yeah no. It just looks so retarded that most people will probably recognize how retarded it looks.

[–]cryptobomb 0 points1 point ago

I just send my recording equipment to concerts these days so I don't have to bother with actually being there and actually experiencing the gig.

[–]SirDerpingtonThe3rd 0 points1 point ago

[–]YawnDogg 0 points1 point ago

Shopped

[–]itsDANdeeMAN 0 points1 point ago

was this from the Made in America Fest?

[–]STIPULATE 0 points1 point ago

I know. Nobody likes a sausage fest.

[–]motchmaster 0 points1 point ago

The best camera is the one you have on you.

[–]tree_D 0 points1 point ago

IMO even the ipad recording thing is a little lame

[–]aaronrkc -1 points0 points ago

When I saw a band at a small club in January someone was recording on an iPad and before they started a song they yelled "Hold on to your iPads, we're comin' for ya!"

[–]ebologna 0 points1 point ago

Oh my god. It's bad enough when you go to Disney and see people walking around doing that with their iPads.

[–]maduag -1 points0 points ago

rap?

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]tzez 3 points4 points ago

Warning: Goatse.

[–]tricil 1 point2 points ago

Now I want to do this.

Rapper: "yo DJ, hold up" turns to dude in crowd "man, what the fuck is this shit?"

Hilarity ensues...

[–]saibermvnki 17 points18 points ago

The people behind him.

[–]GregPatrick 0 points1 point ago

Look at the lighting on the computer. This is fake.

[–]emehrkay 0 points1 point ago

What yall dont understand is that Jay Electronica has been the most anticipated rapper for at least 5 years and he doesnt release a damn thing. So to see him actually rapping is something that needs to be captured for historical purposes

[–]andytuba 7 points8 points ago

This is like bringing a Swiss Army knife to a gunfight.

[–]recklessfred 1 point2 points ago

I prefer to think of it as bringing a laptop to a phone fight.

[–]emehrkay 0 points1 point ago

Any means necessary

[–]wewewawa -2 points-1 points ago

You guys are giving him too much credit.

He doesn't understand all the 720p and all that.

This is a mac user.
