[–]DemeGeek 51 points52 points ago

/r/dontpanic for the lazy

[–]saumuribiz 4 points5 points ago

TIL thanks

[–]ninjamuffin 17 points18 points ago

I dont think you know what TIL stands for...

[–]tineyeit 7 points8 points ago

I think it's just poor grammar possibly mixed with replying to the wrong person. They're saying "Today I Learned [about whatever]. Thanks." They could either "Today I Learned there was a subreddit for Douglas Adams related stuff" (in which case it probably should be for the person who linked it) or "Today I learned how to hyperlink a subreddit by using /r/".

[–]saumuribiz 2 points3 points ago

hmm, thanks for the thorough explanation

[–]ninjamuffin 1 point2 points ago

oic

[–]nomorepassword 3 points4 points ago

You're doing Sagan's work son

[–]lostxfreakx42 0 points1 point ago

Ooops. I knew I missed something!

[–]DemeGeek 0 points1 point ago

Yeah, sorry for stealing thunder from you, I just thought it would be quicker to do this than to send you a message to update your comment.

[–]roboinventor 5 points6 points ago

There's a subreddit for that... I really shouldn't be supposed. There went a night of sleeping.

[–]Cemo9999 5 points6 points ago

There's a subberddit for everything! Except cabbages.

[–]Vargie76 9 points10 points ago

Well, there is /r/cabbage.

[–]GraJame[S] 10 points11 points ago

What a sad sad place

[–]alfrednugent 9 points10 points ago

Tis a silly place

[–]Cemo9999 0 points1 point ago

Thanks, I was looking for it for a week or so.

[–]TexanAtheist 2 points3 points ago

As the moderator of /r/dontpanic, I would like to thank you for the 200 subscribers we received due to your comment. Gracias sir

[–]lostxfreakx42 0 points1 point ago

Haha De nada! I am, however, not a sir. :P

[–]TexanAtheist 0 points1 point ago

Sorry, you know the rules of reddit. All redditors are assumed to be male until proven otherwise. Even then, it's still speculated.

"It is most gratifying that your enthusiasm for our planet continues unabated. As a token of our appreciation, we hope you will enjoy the two thermonuclear missiles we've just sent to converge with your craft. [–]Magrathea_MAGRATHEA 16 points17 points ago

That was my line.

[–]masterboat 1 point2 points ago

I love you for your username.

[–]Ka1ser 1 point2 points ago

We I apologize for the inconvenience

[–]joman47 30 points31 points ago

2nd favorite quote from "Hitchhiker's Guide." #1: "Not again."

[–]stillnotking 9 points10 points ago

I was a bit let down that he eventually did explain why it was thinking that.

[–]szchm 4 points5 points ago

I thought the band-aided bat was a nice diversion from the general doom of the third book.

[–]joman47 0 points1 point ago

man, I need to get around to finishing the series.

[–]Kramgalen 3 points4 points ago

You put the spioler tag after the spoiler.. Now i'm sad :( Oh well i guess i should have read them years ago.

[–]karanj 2 points3 points ago

Oh c'mon, that is a massive spoiler. The entire book is dedicated to the build up, and here you go spoiling it.

[–]hedges747 1 point2 points ago

YOU BASTARD!!!!!!! (puts down book to cry)

[–]Moo3 0 points1 point ago

Oh WTF man?! Can you not edit it now please?

[–]shiftius 0 points1 point ago

Eat a bag of dicks cunt face

[–]joman47 0 points1 point ago

well, it seems you've ruined everything for me. I will be very put off when I figure out what you're talking about.

[–]shall1313 9 points10 points ago

Love this book (or books if you have the divided collection).

[–]masterboat 2 points3 points ago

I've had three omnibus editions in my day. My first one my younger brother and I read probably over 20 times.

[–]shall1313 0 points1 point ago

I have 1 well abused omnibus. My brother and I share it and it travels a lot haha

[–]masterboat 0 points1 point ago

Yeah my first one just had far too much wear on it, it had to be retired.

[–]megamoze 8 points9 points ago

I can't not read that in Stephen Fry's voice.

[–]Deestan 11 points12 points ago

I hear Peter Jones - the narrator of the original radio series.

[–]joseph4th 0 points1 point ago

I have several versions of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy Audiobooks.

The first is on cassette, abridged (Sacrilege!) and read by Stephen Moore who did the voice of Marvin in the Radio series. This version is good because he sings the songs and that Marvin is spot on.

The econd is the greatest because it is unabridged and read by Douglas Adams himself. He just reads the songs straight though. Also on Cassette and they are getting a little worn.

Third I like the least. It is the digital version I got from Audible.com. It is read by Stephen Fry. I haven't listened to it all. I got upset when I got to the part about Author going down into the basement to find the plans for the bypass. They Americanized it by chancing the English 'torch' to the American 'flashlight.' I'll try to get over that and restart it when I've finished listening to the Vlad Taltos series by Steven Brust which was released on audio recently.

Note that Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency is still my favorite. I have several versions of this as well. I am very pleased the digital version that came out on Audible.com is the same version I have on cassette, unabridged and read by Douglas Adams. Avoid the dramatized version at all costs.

I also have Last Chance to See on cassette and should probably see about digitizing that since I don't think it will ever be republished.

I also know where my towel is.

[–]Cejdej 4 points5 points ago

I just started reading The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy and I find this awesome!

[–]LascielCoin 3 points4 points ago

This has been my wallpaper for the past 3 months, I love this quote :)

[–]karanj 0 points1 point ago

Isn't that background rather aptly the pillars of creation?

[–]bouncythesane 0 points1 point ago

thanks for sharing! love it.

[–]Harold_Grundelson 4 points5 points ago

Yeah, but what if the Universe had been aborted? Checkmate, Atheists.

[–]mtreef2 4 points5 points ago

Favorite movie ever. I haven't been fortunate enough to find the books :(

[–]InPlainSightSC2 9 points10 points ago

They are at my local Barnes and Noble, and I am sure you could buy them off Amazon/Ebay. Really worth the read,

[–]mtreef2 2 points3 points ago

thanks mate, I'll have to pop over to my local B&N this week!

[–]InPlainSightSC2 2 points3 points ago

Good luck, and don't forget your towel!

[–]mtreef2 2 points3 points ago

right, because what on earth would I do without my wonderful towel.

[–]palindrex 3 points4 points ago

Not so much on earth, perhaps.

[–]FrogDie 2 points3 points ago

fuck it.

[–]mtreef2 1 point2 points ago

the only reason I haven't looked there is because I really like to support my small family owned book shop

[–]tahoebyker 2 points3 points ago

In my experience they can probably order it if you want them to.

[–]O_Tempora_O_Morons 1 point2 points ago

Go buy them now, I'll wait. Seriously, I'll wait.

[–]shall1313 0 points1 point ago

I'll wait too. Sits next to Tempora

[–]Randumbthawts 0 points1 point ago

I still prefer the bbc miniseries over the movie. The radio dramas are great too, and not too hard to find online.

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]mtreef2 0 points1 point ago

thanks mate, I'll have to find that on Amazon.

[–]Myuriko 8 points9 points ago

"In the beginning, the Universe was created ... Bad move." Guess how many letters that is. That's right. 42.

[–]dlan4327 1 point2 points ago

If that was intentional... He is already my favourite author but that is just ridiculously brilliant foresight.

[–]karanj 7 points8 points ago

No, Myuriko is chopping most of the second sentence to achieve this serendipity.

[–]Myuriko 0 points1 point ago

Yeah, there's no way it was intentional. Just a happy coincidence, if you happen to truncate the quote the way I did.

[–]palindrex 3 points4 points ago

TIL: quote famous book/movie on suitable background -> upwards of 1k karma. Oh well...

[–]Eklitias 3 points4 points ago

Consider it a tribute to Douglas Adams. Karma is worthless, you know? Instead, more new people will hear about his ingenious books. I don't see how it is bad.

[–]palindrex -1 points0 points ago

Karma is a major filter for what content gets featured, so it's not acutally worthless. That said, I concur with the rest of your remark. Always glad to see Douglas Adams continues to exite people.

[–]szchm 3 points4 points ago

A lot of people to find it easier to communicate using other peoples' words, rather than their own. It's why memes are so popular.

[–]doubledeuce22 0 points1 point ago

Memes use other people's images with your own words.

[–]palindrex 0 points1 point ago

Also, chances are you are using other people's words pretty much all the time. Social anthropology and all...

[–]Ragelova123 0 points1 point ago

Is that bacon in the background?

[–]HungarianHaiku 1 point2 points ago

Can someone create this into a wallpaper? 16:9 please!

[–]Rain_Seven 1 point2 points ago

I've got the Gilded paged black bible version of the books on my shelf, best purchase ever. Best book ever.

[–]TalkingBackAgain 1 point2 points ago

The man was a giant. Any country that has writers of his caliber in it should be ashamed to have a single illiterate among their number.

[–]xlink174 0 points1 point ago

Thought it was a bacon strip

[–]Osmium189 0 points1 point ago

I love Douglas Adams.

[–]RyanDacca 0 points1 point ago

No truer words, etc.

[–]giranda 0 points1 point ago

I have The Hitchikers Guide sitting right next to me which makes this ten times better.

[–]ImNotGoodInEnglish 0 points1 point ago

The center of the image is hard to read. Change the color of the text or add a border to it.

[–]God__Here 1 point2 points ago

As the one responsible for this shit, many don't appreciate the time and effort I put into the universe.

[–]scifiwoman 0 points1 point ago

I've just realized, come my next birthday, I will be 42.

[–]cricketcrazy100392 1 point2 points ago

anything to do with Hitchhikers gets an upvote

[–]Cpt_Arrsome 0 points1 point ago

so we're starting to take good quotes an copy paste them onto some pictures, now? k.

[–]Xagon14 1 point2 points ago

I love Terry Pratchett.

[–]Joelsy15 0 points1 point ago

I read this in Steven fry's voice

[–]shall1313 0 points1 point ago

As someone who uses the v.. I respectfully inform you Mr. Fry spells it Stephen.

[–]Joelsy15 0 points1 point ago

Whilst posting this I did think it was Stephen, but I ended up going with the more common spelling.

[–]Windsworth -2 points-1 points ago

Almost thought this was /r/atheism or /r/circlejerk for a minute.

[–]zop1o 0 points1 point ago

False. In the beginning there was nothing. Then there was Calvin

[–]wonkydonky 0 points1 point ago

Is it just me, or did the original quote read something more like:

"In the beginning, God created the universe. This has made a lot of people very angry and has widely been regarded as a bad move."

[–]momothegodofall -3 points-2 points ago

if the earth wasn't made there would be no reddit.

[–]terry_has_boots -3 points-2 points ago

Terry Pratchett's take on the matter:

Much human ingenuity has gone into finding the ultimate Before.

The current state of knowledge can be summarized thus:

In the beginning, there was nothing, which exploded.
