My buddy had an extra leaf green game I have been playing through and it never dawned on me as a child how cruel the old pokemon could be sometimes. The computers say things like "My pets!!" after you beat them and so many of them just send the same type of pokemon at you again and again. By the third rattatata they must have realized my primeape is just going to claw its face off. But I stand there a psychotic ten year old taking on all comers. My psychic monsters shattering the minds of small house pets and my lightning monster frying random birds in the general vicinity. I am basically a kid who wants to skin cats but was then given an army of viscous beasts that I use to strong arm society. Also the way my rival is always saying "smell ya!" whenever he leaves kinda freaks me out. I know the term smell ya later but something about Gary and his overt aggressiveness towards me makes it seem like a desperate cry for my attention. His eyes plead with me the moment before he walks away "recognize my love! My grandfather refuses to acknowledge my gender because I think he knows I'm secretly gay. I am in hell." But I am the harbinger of torture in this world.I deny his look and send him away defeated. I have found a world that gives power to the ambitious and I aim to become its dark prince.

To make it weirder, there doesn't really seem to be any differentiation between Pokemon and everyday run of the mill animals. Meaning that some Pokemon are god like creatures with immense amounts of power and intellect, but they are lumped together with what are essentially pigeons.

That's only cartoon-adaptation canon, so you can ignore it. In the original games and manga they exclusively make unique animal noises and those are the 'true' Pokemon universes.

If you step back and think about it, it's kinda fucked up that people's first reaction when they see each other is to make their pokemon fight. I imagine most other universes people would initially let their pets play together, but in this world they just love to see them beat each other up!

You know they are very careful to make sure everyone knows the Pokemon don't get hurt and only get positive effects from all the battling (not fighting) they only faint (don't die) and are perfectly happy in pokeballs (stuffed into tiny cages forever).
