There's decent ongoing research showing that this is an explainable psychological phenomenon, which entails crossing an "event boundary". It's not as cut-and-dry as going to get a drink and forgetting, but here's an article explaining it more elaborately.

[–]this_barb 8 points9 points ago

Yes, it's doorways, an inarguably arbitrary construct, that causes people to forget.

P.S. I'm skeptical.

[–]bigsol81 32 points33 points ago

Except that doorways are not an arbitrary construct on a subconscious level. They represent a transition from one environment to another.

[–]Tek49 14 points15 points ago

Hi Skeptical

[–]eagleis25 2 points3 points ago

And I'm confused!

[–]DarkChurro 0 points1 point ago

Surely there's something that can be done

[–]eagleis25 0 points1 point ago

I think you missed the point...

[–]nottooshabbyatall[S] 0 points1 point ago

Clever.

[–]Xervicx 2 points3 points ago

I've only read the title and it makes sense to me. My brain is working on developing something now, I will type things as I think of them and figure them out. Essentially, you have the fact that walking through a doorway represents something very important: Transition. Different environments, different obstacles, different stimuli. We have genetically programmed to be curious about our surroundings, and these surroundings are to be investigated frequently and consistently every time a different environment is entered.

This is why we have more difficulty finding something in a closet than out in the open. A closet can be highly organized and your brain will still pause as you prepare yourself to look through it.

Keeping that in mind, the type of doorway could also influence how you enter a room. A small doorway can make people feel more anxious, due to natural instincts kicking in regarding enclosed spaces. The room on the other side will appear to be bigger, and your mind will automatically adjust to the larger space, causing you to take in more of the room at once.

That's all I really want to say for now, I've stopped early so that I can avoid ranting. Please, anyone, tell me how accurate or inaccurate I am.

[–]helljumper_117 2 points3 points ago

might as well give u an upvote for that essay

[–]jay_stark 0 points1 point ago

Cliff note me this... NOW!

[–]DanTycoon 2 points3 points ago

Doesn't have to be a doorway, anything your mind perceives to be an "event boundary" will do.

It just so happens that distinctly different things happen in between places linked by doorways.

[–]Dildo_Ball_Baggins 1 point2 points ago

I wonder if we'd forget if we closed our eyes and navigated our way through the house, or closed our eyes when passing under doors.

[–]8lbIceBag 1 point2 points ago

No, because you are still aware of your surroundings. If you aren't aware of them, how are you ever going to find the fridge?

[–]Dildo_Ball_Baggins 0 points1 point ago

The same way blind people find the fridge?

[–]8lbIceBag 0 points1 point ago

They are aware they have crossed an event boundary when walking through a doorway,

[–]Dildo_Ball_Baggins 0 points1 point ago

Ahh I see what you mean. Sorry, I was confused by your last comment.

I was mainly wondering whether it was a visual thing. So if we took away the actual visual aspect of seeing the event boundary we crossed, whether that wouldn't affect our train of thought.

[–]46and2ool 0 points1 point ago

Its the weed son.

[–]mangine 22 points23 points ago

I love this cartoonist, I pretty much check for new comics everyday. He's brazillian, BUT, luckly he has an english version yaaayy!

Here it's: http://onceuponasaturday.com/

It's actually very delayed, but he still working hard on translations (sometimes they're hard to do because it involves some language jokes)

[–]nottooshabbyatall[S] 1 point2 points ago

Oh wow. Thanks for sharing.

[–]elfuser 25 points26 points ago

False. It's actually mice from a different dimension controlling us.

[–]Silver_Crow 20 points21 points ago

So long and thanks for all the fish!

[–]notenoughspacefornam 2 points3 points ago

And suddenly dropping dead of myxomatosis?

[–]Silver_Crow -1 points0 points ago

Isn't that spread by rabbits, fleas and mosquitoes?

[–]notenoughspacefornam -1 points0 points ago

"Earthman, the planet you lived on was commissioned, paid for, and run by mice. It was destroyed five minutes before the completion of the purpose for which it was built, and we've got to build another one." Only one word registered with Arthur.

"Mice?" he said.

"Indeed Earthman."

"Look, sorry - are we talking about the little white furry things with the cheese fixation and women standing on tables screaming in early sixties sit coms?"

Slartibartfast coughed politely.

"Earthman," he said, "it is sometimes hard to follow your mode of speech. Remember I have been asleep inside this planet of Magrathea for five million years and know little of these early sixties sit coms of which you speak. These creatures you call mice, you see, they are not quite as they appear. They are merely the protrusion into our dimension of vast hyperintelligent pan- dimensional beings. The whole business with the cheese and the squeaking is just a front."

The old man paused, and with a sympathetic frown continued.

"They've been experimenting on you I'm afraid."

Arthur thought about this for a second, and then his face cleared.

"Ah no," he said, "I see the source of the misunderstanding now. No, look you see, what happened was that we used to do experiments on them. They were often used in behavioural research, Pavlov and all that sort of stuff. So what happened was hat the mice would be set all sorts of tests, learning to ring bells, run around mazes and things so that the whole nature of the learning process could be examined. From our observations of their behaviour we were able to learn all sorts of things about our own ..."

Arthur's voice tailed off.

"Such subtlety ..." said Slartibartfast, "one has to admire it."

"What?" said Arthur.

"How better to disguise their real natures, and how better to guide your thinking. Suddenly running down a maze the wrong way, eating the wrong bit of cheese, unexpectedly dropping dead of myxomatosis, - if it's finely calculated the cumulative effect is enormous."

[–]Silver_Crow 1 point2 points ago

Ah, I see. Thanks for the explanation, much appreciated :)

[–]benay123 3 points4 points ago

False. It's actually the MIB de-neuralizing us.

[–]theforbes 11 points12 points ago

Now I have to play The Sims...

[–]LittleBigBrazil 16 points17 points ago

TIL God has a head like a traffic cone

[–]Trachyon 3 points4 points ago

We were all made in God's image. Just not as much as this guy.

[–]LittleBigBrazil 3 points4 points ago

or the purists

[–]JustHereToDerp -2 points-1 points ago

Motha

fuckin

Pyramid Head.

[–]Bitter_Idealist -1 points0 points ago

That was supposed to be god?

[–]Scantraxx90 6 points7 points ago

Try Acid

[–]four24ever 4 points5 points ago

try DMT.

[–]tie3278 3 points4 points ago

try sober

[–]wagglyteff 7 points8 points ago

They have, that's why they're suggesting otherwise.

[–]ewizard09 9 points10 points ago

I've been thinking this for years, who needs god when you have someone playing the sims

[–]Fuentidos 11 points12 points ago

God wouldn't put me in a pool and delete the ladder. (At least I hope he wouldn't)

[–]Aperture_Lab_Tech 32 points33 points ago

He'd put you in an Africa and delete the water though.

[–]Bainemo -2 points-1 points ago

Africa is the starting area. Everyone else did all the quests there and left. It's the dumb ones who stayed because they couldn't figure out how to level. The GM (AKA god) is currently trying harder and harder to force everyone out, but they're inexplicably staying in their shell of a continent.

[–]throwitaway142 2 points3 points ago

I can't believe this is the first comment referencing deleting the pool ladder.

[–]IBoldlySayTheObvious 4 points5 points ago

If anyone's ever watched "Through the Wormhole" on the Discovery Channel, they did an episode about something like this once. It was actually extremely interesting.

[–]nottooshabbyatall[S] 0 points1 point ago

It was also the first episode, if memory serves.

[–]Alenonimo 2 points3 points ago

This brazilian artist is starting to translate his comic strips to english. Yay!

[–]Houstunna 2 points3 points ago

So it was the Travelocity gnome all along

[–]leonprimrose 2 points3 points ago

we're all just SIMs

[–]DwedPiwateWobberts -1 points0 points ago

This wouldn't be funny if we were to assume the younger one doesn't have free will. But, wait...

[–]nif1000 1 point2 points ago

This was my best friend's greatest fear when we were like 12.. she died of a brain anyeurism a couple of years later, God-mode Sims has much more advanced deaths than deleting the latter from the pool..

[–]Alex7302 0 points1 point ago

You've broken the matrix!!!!!

[–]IcedCarpetMelons 0 points1 point ago

while meant to be funny...........

my increasing knowledge of the human brain, computer science, and other things increases the possibility (in my mind at least) that we might just be a simulation

[–]imu2 0 points1 point ago

I used to love that game.

[–]Verifixion 0 points1 point ago

I can honestly never say that I've reached for the fridge and forgotten what I was in the room for.

[–]StayFunky 1 point2 points ago

Murray Murray Murray...

[–]Soap_Box 1 point2 points ago

I go to the sink in the bathroom to brush my teeth and go to sleep. Then all of the sudden I wash my hands and go to the kitchen and make myself dinner.

The fuck.

[–]timo103 0 points1 point ago

TIL god is a conehead.

[–]theatrekiddo 0 points1 point ago

i saw an awesome play last year about if we found out that we were being controlled by a "sims-like" video game played by aliens on a different planet. it was literary mindfuck.

[–]nottooshabbyatall[S] 0 points1 point ago

What was it called?

[–]theatrekiddo 0 points1 point ago

[–]dirtydan997 0 points1 point ago

Now we understand why god lets terrible things happen.

[–]theusualuser -1 points0 points ago

God Mode.

[–]feedmyfrankenstein -1 points0 points ago

My friend called me to talk about apples.. and I was like 'FUCK YOU, APPLES?! Not now! Apples..' I then hung up on him, shaking my head in disgust. Unfortunately, my brother was going to use the phone and came up behind me so although I wanted to go to the bathroom there was just no way around him. We screamed at each other for a while and then eventually I passed out in a puddle of my piss.

[–]_Woosh 0 points1 point ago

The worst is that you will keep going back to your fridge in hope that a snack magically appears

[–]tentakull -5 points-4 points ago

what does this have to do with atheism?

[–]douglas419 -2 points-1 points ago

absolutely nothing actually...hard to believe huh? wait was that a pun?

[–]tentakull -1 points0 points ago

The joke is everyone on r/atheism posts this...so a post with God actually in it in an non derogatory way on reddit would seem out of place. I'm not sure this even makes sense to me, but yes...yes that was why I posted it.
