  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

Thanks. 80% of my time in pics comments is looking for higher res. Someone should write a tineye-type add-on to clicking a pic to find higher resolutions of same.

I'm reporting you.

That's the saddest thing I've ever seen.

I used tineye before coming to the thread but that nat geo version wasn't in the results.

If you were to put it as a phone background or what not, you would prefer the highest quality of said picture over a low-res. I would at least...

There are more awesome tornado/storm pics here - www.tornadohunter.ca

[–]msoetaert 1 point2 points ago

It looks as if the picture Op posted is edited.

[–]slip-shot 0 points1 point ago

its amazing how much better the original is...

why does everyone insist on generating false colors in these images.

[–]ps2owner 1 point2 points ago

Woah, A National Geographic pic without a watermark!

[–]bobaa 0 points1 point ago

Chilling.

[–]SupermanV2 17 points18 points ago

I love driving through Arizona and watching all the hundred of dust devils all around you on either side of the freeways. Nature is beautiful.

[–]Kritical02 6 points7 points ago

This reminds me of when I was a kid and a huge dust devil chased me to my back screen door.

Always wondered if my running created some sort of draft for the dust devil to follow.

Freaked me out as a kid, is cool to think about later ;)

[–]Footballvike81 8 points9 points ago

Those fuckers hurt. Throwing dirt and pebbles like an asshole.

[–]rikkilea44 1 point2 points ago

How big can they get before they become dangerous to someone walking? I've only seen pictures and don't really understand how strong they are.

[–]Banana_Party 3 points4 points ago

I always thought it was a small tornado and thought I was B.A. for being near it.

[–]ceciliabee 0 points1 point ago

as a canadian, this terrifies me... i've never seen a dust storm before

[–][deleted] ago

[–]ceciliabee 0 points1 point ago

alright then, we don't get any dust storms in my part of around toronto

[–]centipedeseverywhere 0 points1 point ago

[–]Adidos 139 points140 points ago

Ridiculously photogenic tornado?

[–]TheTalkingCamelAnus 74 points75 points ago

It's curvy in all the right places.

[–]Full_Of_Win 48 points49 points ago

She'll sweep you right off your feet.

[–]sid2112 25 points26 points ago

I'm just blown away by it.

[–]SeymourLevov 26 points27 points ago

careful, she's a real home wrecker

[–]CANCER_PUNCH 16 points17 points ago

Really? I thought living with her would be a breeze.

[–]Banana_Party 3 points4 points ago

She will "suck you up" ;)

[–]Footballvike81 30 points31 points ago

Tornado.

[–]Brokenomics 2 points3 points ago

She took both of the kids with her when she left?

[–]Full_Of_Win 2 points3 points ago

What a twist.

[–]sid2112 3 points4 points ago

Nothing to get into a twist over.

[–]rileywarren 1 point2 points ago

it'll all blow over soon.

[–]penguinfacts 10 points11 points ago

In the winter, penguins' feet are held a degree or two above freezing. This minimizes taking heat away from the rest of the body, whilst avoiding frostbite.

[–]TheTalkingCamelAnus 8 points9 points ago

Is it true that penguins can escape from their zoos and take control of the steering helm of a ship?

[–]Adria_Penguin -1 points0 points ago

Give me all your knowledge!

[–]You_guys_want_heroin -1 points0 points ago

You should know these things.

[–]Adria_Penguin 0 points1 point ago

I know some, but not all.

Like, did you know that, during migrations, penguins move in massive circles, pushing themselves into the center, so they get warm when they are inside, and protect the others from coldness when they are outside?

[–]hotairballoons -1 points0 points ago

"Held"? Held by whom?

[–]blaw_blaw 12 points13 points ago

[–]WOW_IMSEXY_AS_HELLV2 2 points3 points ago

RPT, what a stud.

[–]nefariousness 2 points3 points ago

at first glance i thought this was a goldfish in a blender.

[–]scorpion347 2 points3 points ago

Alabama here. All tornados look like a fat man trying to rape you. At least thats what I see when I look at things that kill families.

[–]blackbitty 0 points1 point ago

After recently relocating to Alabama, I am afraid of being raped by not only tornadoes, but also by people climbing in my windows :(

[–]scorpion347 0 points1 point ago

What part did you move to? Sounds like Montgomery or further south?

[–]blackbitty -1 points0 points ago

Huntsville. That's where "hide yo kids, hide yo wife" happened. And we have a pretty nasty line of storms that could be tornadoes passing through right now. The sirens on post have gone off already. :'(

[–]scorpion347 2 points3 points ago

Actually thats my area. Welcome to Huntville. Crime rate is actually fairly low or atleast on my side of town. That storm was the first this season. You'll probably see worse later in the next few months. Just remember they sound like a train, seek low ground, cover your head, and try to stay inside when you can. Oh, and never hide under a matress. If something falls, all a matress is going to do is cuase you to get stuck. Best to wear a helmet if you're afraid of falling objects. Also stay away from glass windows and doors. And never drive in water deeper than your rims. That just about covers storm safety. Any questions?

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]scorpion347 0 points1 point ago

Well, if you can you should watch the weather channel. They usually tell you if what areas it's going to hit. The sirens go off if a tornado or likely tornado is in or close to the county meaning if you here it it still might be heading somewhere else. If you can't get to a tv or radio try calling someone who can while you look for cover just in case.

[–]Bill_Clintons_Choad -4 points-3 points ago

I don't think that is a tornado but a large dust devil.

[–]xjuggernaughtx 5 points6 points ago

It's definitely not a dust devil. It might be a landspout, though. Dust devils start from the ground up and don't have a condensation funnel. This is definitely starting from the clouds and descending.

[–]Bill_Clintons_Choad 6 points7 points ago

My apologies thanks for the correction.

[–]xjuggernaughtx 3 points4 points ago

No need for apologies, it's how we learn. Tornadoes are just the thing I've spent a ridiculous amount of time studying. To be honest, If I couldn't see the top of this funnel, I would probably have guessed it as a powerful dust devil. The bottom looks very much like one.

[–]Bill_Clintons_Choad 0 points1 point ago

I figure I would know. I live in the heart of tornado alley and had never witnessed a circulation like this one.

[–]Adidos 0 points1 point ago

Its a tornado, just look at that funnel cloud reaching down to the ground.

[–]tom4ed 8 points9 points ago

Where and when? Do you have any details? Thanks.

Placid Awe

The awesome power of this tornado, just south of Parker Colorado, is evident by the amount of earth being consumed in its vortex. Despite this power, Mother Nature was just putting on a spectacular show; only a single tree was damaged.

[–]greyestofblue 2 points3 points ago

I live 5 minutes from where this was taken. <3 miles.

[–]Deliberate_Reposter 9 points10 points ago

Ha, I read that as heart miles. Oh, What has the internet done to me?

[–]xjuggernaughtx 4 points5 points ago

Me too. I sat here for a minute trying to figure out what heart miles meant in this context. Or any context, really.

EDIT: Typo.

[–]IVIustangGT 5 points6 points ago

I can tell you that this is not a tornado, but a landspout based on funnel structure and overall shape. They're nowhere near as destructive as an average tornado, but they still can wreak as much havoc as something such as an EF1 or maybe an EF2 at most...

[–]smithcraft 8 points9 points ago

Except that a landspout is still a type of tornado. The term was coined by meteorologist Howard Bluestein, creator of TOTO, to indicate a kind of tornado not associated with the mesocyclone of a thunderstorm. Their official National Weather Service designation are "dust-tube tornadoes."

[–]xjuggernaughtx 1 point2 points ago

This is the winner, people. A landspout is still a tornado, just not likely to be a very powerful one due to the absence of a mesocyclone.

[–]Starrfx642 0 points1 point ago

True. I'm also not sure what photographic evidence OP has to claim that there is no mesocyclone with this storm. A lack of wall cloud doesn't necessarily mean the storm isn't a supercell.

[–]xjuggernaughtx 1 point2 points ago

Yeah, I don't know. I guess just the water-spout like structure of this tornado. It's so gentle looking. There's no real way to know if this is from a mesocyclone or not, but it just looks like a landspout. Absolutely could be a traditional tornado, though.

[–]IVIustangGT 0 points1 point ago

My apologies guys; should've double-checked my facts before posting. I was even originally a meteorology major; good thing I'm switching to engineering!

[–]PartyButton 8 points9 points ago

...There's a U (you) and I in 'union' but just an I in 'my beliefs', there's a crashing plane with a banner that reads "everyone's naive"!

It popped into my head upon reading the title as well. How did Arif write that shit in high school? This remains one of my favourite lines of all time. :D

[–]stayonmysidetonight 2 points3 points ago

The only proof that I have is that we SHOT AND KILLED THIS HOOOOOORSE
Is the sounds of whips on flesh and a bleeding heart remorse!

[–]TheWeeBabyShamus 2 points3 points ago

Finally, another PTH fan. I have no clue, the lyrics for the 1st album were just insanely deep.

[–]phelt 0 points1 point ago

Indeed! I still manage to piece together deeper meanings and underlying concepts in Kezia's lyrics 7 years later. And don't even get me started on the phenomenal songwriting, especially coming from such young guys on their debut full-length!
The album is literally timeless, an all-time great. I might just go listen to it - cheers!

At first glance I saw dead cows all over the ground.

[–]Coffeh 0 points1 point ago

Is the bottom a brownish red due to all the dirt it sucks up?

[–]xjuggernaughtx 1 point2 points ago

Yes, the color of the funnel is usually dictated by whatever it has sucked up. This one doesn't looks very powerful, so the dirt hasn't traveled way up the funnel.

[–]astomp 0 points1 point ago

Can this be photoshopped into the typical windows background?

[–]Amishhellcat 0 points1 point ago

obviously that's god's finger of death, punishing all the gays in it's path... and nothing else!

If I could drop everything and be injected with a Masters level education, it would be in meteorology and I'd become a tornado chaser.

I grew up in the midwest. Closest I ever got to a Tornado was when one came down the row of houses 3 streets over. I remember my grandparents, my sister, and my father down in the basement shouting for me to go down there. I could hardly hear them over the rain, the trembling of the house, and the explosive roar of the tornado a couple streets over. The windows were bulging in and out a good foot, but I was just immobilized looking out those windows. I remember I was not afraid, I was overwhelmed by the beauty of the ferocity of the storm and complete overload on the senses.

In that moment there was little difference between me and the fly that is attracted to the bug zapper.

[–]images-ofbrokenlight 0 points1 point ago

[–]Starrfx642 0 points1 point ago

Not sure if it had already been mentioned, but I believe this specific tornado has come to be known as the Memorial Day Miracle in Campo, Colorado. (To storm chasers)

Video here

It was called this because, according to the Stom Prediction Center, chances for a tornado on this way were slim.

As the day went on however, it became evident that a small area was favorable for storm production due to a dryline extending south of a low pressure system.

Those that took the chance of driving for hours to possibly see no thunderstorm activity were rewarded with one of the slowest moving (I think it was moving at 10 mph) and photogenic tornadoes of the year--possibly the decade.

Even better is that it occurred in a sparsely populated area, so damage was minimal.

EDIT: I could be wrong-- this could in fact be a different tornado. I'm not sure now. Either way, the story is cool.

EDIT2: Yep I'm wrong. Parker is further North than Campo. Oops. You have to admit they do look similar.

[–]Poppa_Mo 0 points1 point ago

I don't know why but I've always loved tornadoes. They're fascinating to me. I used to have a recurring dream when I was younger where I'd go outside, and the sky had that sickly green overcast it gets just before it hails, right when tornadoes are prime to come and flex some nature. In my dream I used to walk right into that beast. Of course, that was when I would wake up... Just before getting ripped to pieces, obliterated by debris, and sanded to death.
