A place to share interesting photographs and pictures. Feel free to post your own, but please read the rules first (see below), and note that we are not a catch-all for general images (of screenshots, comics, etc.)

Hover over to read.

Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

Gigantic billboards should be outlawed they are hideous.

[–]eggbean 15 points16 points ago

It's actually a traditional part of Piccadilly Circus, like it is in Times Square, NYC.

Scroll through and you might see some older pictures, when the adverts were different. There was a huge Coke advert there when I was a kid.

eg. http://www.oldukphotos.com/graphics/England%20Photos/London,%20Piccadilly%20Circus%201960%27s.jpg

[–]habitats 5 points6 points ago

Was looking for something like that. Thanks!

[–]dezi1907 20 points21 points ago

Oh dear, that looks awful today in comparison.

[–]Adamsoski 20 points21 points ago

You can tell the buildings are a lot cleaner though. Also the old cars make a big difference, as does the old road - everything is a bit more brown, helped I suspect by the old, non digital, camera I suspect.

You are right though, it does look better in the older picture, but I suspect it doesn't look so nice if you look at everything close up - everything seems rather dirty.

[–]cutofmyjib 2 points3 points ago

You suspect a lot.

[–]Adamsoski 3 points4 points ago

Yes indeed I do, Watson.

[–]sinisterlefty 2 points3 points ago

Yes who knew giant cigarettes were so attractive.

[–]jeremybeadles_beagle 2 points3 points ago

Definitely prefer the past.

[–]MasterNyx 187 points188 points ago

SMOKE.

[–]buckie33 56 points57 points ago

You smoking yet?

[–]HighDefHotDog 37 points38 points ago

HEY YOU! JOIN THE NAVY!

[–]i-need-space 50 points51 points ago

Piccadilly Circus. Everything has changed except that lamp post

[–]angch 39 points40 points ago

Not the same angle, but close enough:

Google StreetView July 2008

The lamp posts are still there, and a number of the buildings are still there (compare the arches).

[–]adruva 32 points33 points ago

"I think is the worst place i have visited in my fucking life im eighty four" -

Review as seen on Google Maps...

[–]Triplen01 17 points18 points ago

Its the tourists. When this place is empty (early morning) its actually quite beautiful.

[–]MalcontentUK 11 points12 points ago

Yeah agreed. Londoners with any sense avoid the place in the day; complete tourist trap (I don't even know why, its just a bunch of overpriced shops and massive neon advertising signs; less to it even than Times' Square, NY).

But Piccadilly Circus tube station ticket hall IS good; that still feels like walking back into the 1940s (but not in a disparaging 'tube is old and crap' sense).

[–]homeless_in_london 2 points3 points ago

Oxford Street and Reagents Street are beautiful in the early morning. I occasionally had breakfast there with my parents, just off Carnaby Street, and it looks fucking magical. The big, white imperial buildings that are literally everywhere are something to behold, especially when not being bothered by pesky tourists.

Also breakfast in Liberty > Breakfast at Tiffany's.

[–]benjamincanfly 10 points11 points ago

Photos look cooler when everyone's wearing black, brown and tan.

[–]wastelander 8 points9 points ago

It had a lot more charm back in 1949.

[–]Luke273 3 points4 points ago

Yeah, lots of buildings are the same, they have just been cleaned.

[–]EltaninAntenna 4 points5 points ago

Cool. Is the Trocadero still a gigantic Sega arcade?

[–]brittafiltaperry 4 points5 points ago

The top floor that used to be Sega World has been gone for a long time now :( There is still a massive arcade though!

[–]Versipellis 4 points5 points ago

Actually, they shut down the main arcade so now it's more like a shit-tier shopping mall. Going to Troc back in the day was always a lot like walking into an anime convention, since that arcade was always the London cosplay community's default hangout.

[–]twochoicestom 3 points4 points ago

yes. It's like walking into the 90's' in there.

[–]jokkeje 16 points17 points ago

Here it is in higher resolution

[–]shpongledsummer 78 points79 points ago

whenever i see pictures of london I am reminded that it was the center of the world for over a century. I dunno it just seems so powerful.

[–]dumbkid 72 points73 points ago

its still the world centre of finance, and financial crime

[–]7zark77 42 points43 points ago

Surely the centre of financial crime is Switzerland and the Cayman Islands.

[–]NihilisticToad 8 points9 points ago

Hiiiiyyooooooo

[–]Chive 2 points3 points ago

What about Moscow? I thought it was the up and coming star in that area.

[–]PFisken 9 points10 points ago

Just on the crime bit, I think.

[–]jesticle 19 points20 points ago

It's also still the centre of the world geographically (cartographically?) with the Greenwich Meridian.

[–]weedroid 12 points13 points ago

You could just as easily draw a meridian through any point on earth though. The one at Greenwich is only important because of Britain's historic imperial ventures.

[–]King_In_The_North_ 28 points29 points ago

Why are you trying to take this away from us?

[–]homeless_in_london 8 points9 points ago

We civilise them and this is the thanks we get!

[–]FakePlasticShrimp 0 points1 point ago

I, for one demand an end to the butchery of The English Language. Evolving characteristics such as 'yo dudes sup?' from 'good evening gentlemen', is but another reason the international stage needs its empire back.

[–]garychencool 5 points6 points ago

And tea, you cannot forget about the tea.

[–]OkToBeTakei 7 points8 points ago

"A" not "the"

Or maybe it can be the centre and NYC can be the center.

[–]Spaztic_monkey 14 points15 points ago

It is "the" though. It ranks as the number one in terms of financial transactions, ahead of NYC. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Financial_centre

[–]Banelingz 3 points4 points ago

It might be true, but I find this funny: The Global Financial Centres Index is compiled by the *London-based** British think-tank Z/Yen and is published annually by the City of London Corporation.*

[–]InTheFury 3 points4 points ago

And the world center of surveillance cameras.

[–]denodik 3 points4 points ago

by several ratings london is capital of the world in our time

[–]NovaProspect 5 points6 points ago

I'd say with the exception of New York, London is still the most powerful city in the world, and will be for a long time. Although the British Empire is long gone, it's legacy is engrained in so many countries around the world.

[–]purdieshuffle 13 points14 points ago

the center of the world for over a century

More like over two centuries no?

[–]postsinsensitively 22 points23 points ago

Hold on, did it ever stop being?

monocle shatters

[–]homeless_in_london 3 points4 points ago

I read a while ago it's still the centre of the world for financial stuff and offshore banking, all of that dodgy stuff, really. 40% of those types of transactions pass through London, second is the US with 10%.

[–]Gandalf_McGee 12 points13 points ago

In some ways, it still is, for example it is the centre of time (GMT +0). Also in general the Americas are said to be 'The West' and Asia is said to be 'The East', between which is London.

[–]TommyTenToes 18 points19 points ago

Not really, I believe most European countries are considered to be part of "the west" too.

EDIT: Source - Al Qaeda targets.

[–]ianscuffling 16 points17 points ago

Agree, although technically isn't that Istanbul? Where east meets west, culturally and linguistically.

[–]postsinsensitively 11 points12 points ago

no, fuck istanbul.

[–]Consistentinople 16 points17 points ago

Fuck you too.

[–]Arctorius 12 points13 points ago

Back when individuality meant wearing a brown trench coat instead of a black one.

[–]diecastjohnson 27 points28 points ago

Nice! Was it color film or colorized?

[–]Fireyedwindsurfer 33 points34 points ago

It's colour film. Kodachrome :)

[–]ANAL_QUEEN 29 points30 points ago

RIP.

[–]partialdread 13 points14 points ago

When I think back on all the crap I learned in high school....

[–]Smithorine 8 points9 points ago

It's a wonder I can think at all...

[–]yapzilla 10 points11 points ago

i think this is color film, i recall seeing this on the wikipedia page for a certain make of film

[–]diecastjohnson 1 point2 points ago

Excellent captured moment in time. Thanks for sharing.

[–]charliepotts 1 point2 points ago

Yes, it's Kodachrome. This is a good example of why many of us mourned its passing. same shot here

[–]preske 5 points6 points ago

It looks too crisp to be colorized.

[–]bafta 3 points4 points ago

It was taken with colour film and certainly wasn't colourised

[–]usedtowork 19 points20 points ago

I can practically taste the soot

[–]bctTamu 16 points17 points ago

I want a Goldflake Cigarette

[–]das_gehund 3 points4 points ago

Goldflake Cigarettes. Those where the days!

[–]wheredapartyat 4 points5 points ago

Hate to break it to you, but the Gold Flakes I've had were god damn terrible.

[–]kartoos 3 points4 points ago

Dad smoked those, 2 packs a day. Got him in the end, I hate Goldflake

[–]hdskjahdkjsa 19 points20 points ago

Actually refreshing to see a big cigarette ad.

[–]ThatBoogalooShrimp 19 points20 points ago

I don't know why, but I absolutely love cigarette advertising, it's been banned here all my life is probably part of the reason. It's just so interesting and kinda cool.

[–]whoduhhelru 5 points6 points ago

It's amazing to realize that this was only four years after WW2. Wasn't London bombed like crazy then?

[–]squirrelbo1 10 points11 points ago

Not so much west london. Most of the bombing by Germans was industrial and militarily targeted, unlike western targets in Germany and Japan. The east end got fucked hard (to the point that even by the 60's parts still weren't fixed- but that's as much to do with the general neglect the east end has always had, as much as the actually bombing.)but the west was largely ok.

[–]whoduhhelru 4 points5 points ago

Thanks!

[–]One_Angry_Cow 4 points5 points ago

I think the blitz was 1940/41.

[–]PhazonZim 22 points23 points ago

It's very beautiful. I thought for a second to say "I wish I could time travel and visit" but then I realised I'm not white, male or even straight so it'd be a pretty shitty place for me to be.

[–]postsinsensitively 16 points17 points ago

Frankly it was 1949. The war ended and we were broke. Plus the empire was crumbling. You'd be better off not visiting.

Oh and for the record. Our civil rights issues were settles long before the USA. You'd not have had too serious an issue not being white.

[–]coolman333 1 point2 points ago

But the being homosexual Would have sucked for them during that time period.

[–]PTFOholland 0 points1 point ago

You're a black lesbian right?
Do I win?!

[–]PhazonZim 6 points7 points ago

Bisexual trans woman. Indian descent, Canadian/British citizenship. Parents born in Kenya. Sunni Muslim family, though I'm atheist.

... I'm also a lefty.

[–]Stachow 4 points5 points ago

[–]justanearthling 4 points5 points ago

[–]Alpharmonic 20 points21 points ago

[–]denodik 1 point2 points ago

[–]Okrean 6 points7 points ago

[–]Walletau 2 points3 points ago

Thank you. I find these quite useful just to make sure that the pic isn't a rip off from someone who posted it the week prior.

[–]machinedog 4 points5 points ago

The most amazing thing about this photograph is the amount of advertisement on everything. Look at London today, much classier and cleaner city.

[–]lolr 3 points4 points ago

Goldflake cigarettes are just about as classy as you can get. Classier than Sanyo any way you can put it.

[–]Deathalicious 20 points21 points ago

It's actually not that magical. The nature of photography is well understood, and is based on solid science.

[–]Genmaken 15 points16 points ago

Jesus take the camera!

[–]Billionaire_Bot 9 points10 points ago

I wonder which shop sells wonka bars

[–][deleted] ago

[–]ARCHA1C 2 points3 points ago

Looks pretty good for having been bombed heavily just a few years prior.

[–]sonofthewear 7 points8 points ago

Wish it still looked like that

[–]dumbkid 0 points1 point ago

it virtually does apart from the ads, cars and the hats, they even have those old buses still

[–]Uaedaien 4 points5 points ago

People in the picture would be far more diverse today.

[–]ms1987 3 points4 points ago

I kinda want a smoke

[–]wisoka 1 point2 points ago

How many times do i have to see this picture posted in a month?

[–]bobanators 4 points5 points ago

It is pretty cool though. Plus its the first time I've ever seen it..

[–]raheelp 2 points3 points ago

Anyone have a picture of area today ?

[–]Homletmoo 4 points5 points ago

Screengrab from the nearest street view shot.

[–]BobTheSCV 3 points4 points ago

Google does.

Haha, someone left a review of Piccadilly circus saying "I think is the worst place i have visited in my fucking life im eighty four"

[–]bungopony 1 point2 points ago

Tuppence for a bootblack, guv'ner?

[–]simpo690 1 point2 points ago

[–]Redh_ 0 points1 point ago

This is tobacco companies advertising.

[–]sleepyhead12 0 points1 point ago

Damn it looks fun though.

[–]StickyGreens 1 point2 points ago

Look at all dem rims! (I mean seriously, they look slick)

[–]echelon5 0 points1 point ago

Would anyone know how to make this into a poster or something. I showed my mum and she want to hang it up some where in the house

[–]verboks 0 points1 point ago

Look at the rims, FRESH TO DEATH.

[–]DeerOnTheRocks -1 points0 points ago

Cool

[–]eire1228 0 points1 point ago

[–]teh_killer 0 points1 point ago

[–]LoneWave 0 points1 point ago

Magical , how romantic.

[–]SkidmarkInMyUndies -1 points0 points ago

Am I crazy or are those steering wheels on the left side? Did it use to be that way in England?

[–]Danielhibbs 0 points1 point ago

Stereotype dictates it still looks like this.

[–]NCRider 0 points1 point ago

...and pretty soon that shop will close and they'll turn it into something really depressing, like a Baby Gap.

[looks at Google Street View]

It IS a Baby Gap.

[–]aakaakaak 1 point2 points ago

How long has it been since this was reposted? I haven't seen it in a few months.

[–]ThisAverageGuy 0 points1 point ago

For all you fellow Londoners.

/r/London

[–]Lonehangman 0 points1 point ago

Wait...when did colour photos and videos first pop up, I unfortunately never got taught about the history of technology. Too busy learning about religion :/

[–]Big_Lex 0 points1 point ago

first thing I noticed was the lack of women

[–]BigG123 -1 points0 points ago

Looks soo...bland..

[–]TheEdgemerian 0 points1 point ago

I usually associate the symbol on the back of those cars with a funeral procession.

[–]IArgueWithAtheists 0 points1 point ago

I assumed a lot more men would be wearing fedoras. Where are all the fedoras?

[–]StupidButSerious 0 points1 point ago

Anyone has a "now" picture so we can compare?

[–]HeresToTheCrazyOnes 0 points1 point ago

I stood in that very spot and looked at that photo. I think it has just as much personality now as it did then, but because we're used to giant digital screens and modern shops, we appreciate the version from back then more.

[–]Flash_Mob_Fisting 1 point2 points ago

Smashing!

[–]lizardwizardboy97 -1 points0 points ago

wooooow is so life amazxing :)

[–]klurff 0 points1 point ago

now i want a cigarette

[–]bkills1986 0 points1 point ago

I love old pictures like this. A simple street scene. Does anyone else know where to (SMOKE) find pictures similar to this?

[–]SMB73 1 point2 points ago

Anyone else think an Austin Powers song and dance here seems strangely appropriate?

[–]CarriedBy6 1 point2 points ago

Goodbye Kodachrome. Your nice bright colors will be missed.

[–]CerebralFX 0 points1 point ago

Bullshit. London was in Black and White back then. Everyone knows that.

[–]whazmyname 0 points1 point ago

Wills Goldflake Cigarettes, still one of the best selling cigarettes in India

[–]iTakebigpoops -1 points0 points ago

love it when re-re-re-reposts make it to the front page

[–]Twoll 0 points1 point ago

fucking reposts.

[–]xeonrage 0 points1 point ago

Oh, this again.

[–]playdohplaydate 1 point2 points ago

i was hoping for a wizard or something to make this magical :(

[–]SuuperSal 0 points1 point ago

Imagine forgeting where you parked your car...in 1949.

[–]Mr_Trofl 0 points1 point ago

May I ask you, is this a recolour of a black and white photo?

[–]A_British_Gentleman 1 point2 points ago

What I love about London is while the cars and shop fronts look completely different, when you look up a the buildings, they all still look like this. Many cities in the UK keep so many signs of their past, you just have to look for it.

[–]bumblingmumbling -1 points0 points ago

Are you sure that is London? Everyone is white.

[–]choof3199 0 points1 point ago

Smoking was awesome back in the day

[–]Poedditor 1 point2 points ago

A somewhat less magical picture of 1949 Berlin.

[–]lawschoollorax 0 points1 point ago

It looks like an "I Spy" picture...

[–]iismatt 0 points1 point ago

This is one of the eras I would have loved to have been alive in. People just got on with it.

[–]roygdavis 0 points1 point ago

Where's all the parking restricting signposts, weight limit signs, urban freeway, no stopping signs?

[–]wilber2k 0 points1 point ago

just LOOK at all that beige! love it.

[–]Lamalas 0 points1 point ago

This ressembles very much Brussels downtown nowadays, except for the cars.

[–]ScorpRex 0 points1 point ago

Whoa everyone drives jeeps and wears funny hats in that town

[–]uckyourmother 0 points1 point ago

Too cool. Thanks man.

[–]DMTryp 0 points1 point ago

not enough people are wearin hats

[–]Uhrzeitlich 0 points1 point ago

This thread is full of Britons using semantics to make England look better than America.

[–]Hobo-With-A-Shotgun 0 points1 point ago

I often wonder what would happen if I woke up to find myself a number of decades in the past. My best answer is that I would have to find some simply manual labour to do, just in order to survive the era.

I've also thought if I could ever acclimatize to the entertainment of the times. No Internet, no video-games, no real movies to speak of, no real music either... I might actually go mad, unless I strike it lucky and find a great clique of people to be friends with.

[–]tmonz 0 points1 point ago

Cigarrettes!! Cigarrettes for everyone!

[–]BuefordSmith 1 point2 points ago

Every time I see old pictures like this, in decent resolution and in color... I'm always startled at how similar they are to modern pictures. Strip away our iPhones and hybrid cars... and we're exactly the same. It's so easy for us to look at pictures from a few decades past and think, "How far we've come!" It's also so easy to look at pictures from a few decades past and think, "How little we've changed!"

[–]IgorsEpiskais 0 points1 point ago

Oh, those hard working London men already repaired bombed buildings from WW2

[–]ContentEnt 0 points1 point ago

[–]tomtermite 0 points1 point ago

Harsh winter ass-kicked an economy already straining under the privations of the post-war “austerity” -- 1949 and the decade after WWII was not a happy one for many Britts.

[–]RzK 0 points1 point ago

Very magical...Pause... not!

[–]agats 0 points1 point ago
