isn't this the Baker shot from operation crossroads? If so i don't think it was an H-bomb, but rather the second fission bomb test after the war.

[–]Owan 3 points4 points ago

yes, this is the Baker shot

You are correct, no H-Bomb, but still 23 kilotons of raw power.

If you look at that fuzzy black thing in part of the Mushroom cloud, its a ship, standing straight up.

[–]futto 3 points4 points ago

i love how you can see the paint burning off the ships that are close to the blast. Awesome display of power.

I have the log book for the USS Dixie that has an entry on when it was sent there for the tests! Somehow it survived was was used up until 1981.

Also the shot that proved large conventional fleets were no longer relevant in the nuclear era.

Can someone explain why they put ships so close a bomb test location?

[–]IzInBloOm 4 points5 points ago

This was a US test to see how effective nuclear weapons would be against navies. Most of the ships are either captured enemy ships or decommissioned american ships. They were placed various distances from the explosion spot. The first shot was Able which was an atmospheric explosion like H & N. Baker was an underwater shot which proved very effective at disabling ships that were in large groups. Charlie shot, which was supposed to be a third deep water shot was scratched. It can be read about here. Super fascinating.

Also we completely jacked up the Marshall islands and screwed their people over.
