I found out my best friend was a creationist (gifs.gifbin.com)

[–]Aimin4ya 14 points15 points16 points 4 hours ago
I found out my fellow Geologist is a creationist.... We are mainly a Paleontology department too. He must think all of our professors are pretty dumb when they keep saying "millions of years"
[–]Grindstone50k 8 points9 points10 points 3 hours ago
To be fair, there are some creationists who don't subscribe to YEC. They see evolution as a domino-type thing set in motion by their god.
[–]johnsonchicklet 4 points5 points6 points 2 hours ago
To be honest, I prefer when creationists think of it this way. At least they aren't denying facts, they are just maintaining their belief of god in a world full of facts. Until a fact 100% disproves god, I am okay with people who accept all science, and say that a god set all of it in motion. Not that I believe any of that bull shit, of course :D
[–]Grindstone50k 0 points1 point2 points 2 hours ago
In my slow process of losing my religion, evolution-set-in-motion-by-god was one of the rationalizations I went through. Maybe it's a stepping stone.
[–]Deafiler 1 point2 points3 points 2 hours ago
It's absolutely a stepping stone. God just fills in the gaps in our knowledge; as we learn more, he recedes.
[–]noname-_- 1 point2 points3 points 3 hours ago
Maybe he's not a young earth creationist.
[–]wizzrobe30 29 points30 points31 points 5 hours ago
Oh well, you're his friend, that's what matters. Don't be a dick.
[–]JosephBartels 6 points7 points8 points 4 hours ago
If I believed something that my best friend knew for a fact wasn't true, then I would sure as hell want them to enlighten me as to the facts of the matter.
[–]halfchubb 6 points7 points8 points 4 hours ago
It's his belief, don't push yours onto others.
[–]Rummenigge 1 point2 points3 points 4 hours ago
Ahhh, it's like not telling someone that 2+2= 5 is wrong. You can believe in god. Fine. But you have to accepts facts.
[–]halfchubb -5 points-4 points-3 points 3 hours ago
No they don't. They do not have to accept anything. They can believe what they want to believe. All that matters is that it IS true and whether they want to believe it or not is up to them.
[–]Rummenigge 7 points8 points9 points 3 hours ago
Dude, you are absolutely welcome to have your own opinion. But if you think that having an opinion makes it a fact, you better GTFO. How would you feel if you're best friend wouldn't accept gravity? You wouldn't let him jump off roofs would you?
[–]beatsandpulses -4 points-3 points-2 points 3 hours ago
You don't know it's wrong for a fact.
I'm not religious, but you can't know anything for sure, its just as stupid to say "This is definitely 100% true" as it is to say "This is definitely 100% not true%".
This (in my opinion) is the biggest problem with this subreddit.

The irony is that brian is an atheist.
[–]TheOneWhoKnocksBitch 7 points8 points9 points 4 hours ago
If he can be tolerant to your beliefs, you should be to his.
[–]LucidMetal 0 points1 point2 points 4 hours ago
I, too, have multiple fundie friends. We don't talk about that sort of thing.
[–]BrutalMassacre3 0 points1 point2 points 4 hours ago
how do you not learn about this during the pre best friend stage?
[–]Grandmaster_Of_Funk 0 points1 point2 points 3 hours ago
The fact that he didn't tells me it's not a big deal
[–]BrutalMassacre3 -1 points0 points1 point 1 hour ago
well i dont know, me and my friends tend to have long talks about views on life and it just seems odd to me that something like your view on how everything was created being different never came up at some point.
[–]Bonyony 1 point2 points3 points 4 hours ago
Why should you care?
[–]LoganBerryz 2 points3 points4 points 3 hours ago
My best friend told me he would vote for Romney a few days ago, so I think I sort of understand this sentiment to an extent.
But, y'know, friends forever no matter what and all that. <3
[–]Aoife246 0 points1 point2 points 3 hours ago
I love the way Stewie's head goes to the side, it reminds me of my (dead) bird Paris when she was alive, you would say something to her and she'd put her head on the side like that as much to say "dafuq you say?"
[–]ImNotSalinger 4 points5 points6 points 4 hours ago
Who cares? It shouldn't matter.
[–]alexdelicious -6 points-5 points-4 points 4 hours ago
But it does. They believe something that has massive evidence to the contrary. You owe it to your friend to continuously show him all the facts you can proving his misguided belief wrong.
[–]handpoppit 4 points5 points6 points 3 hours ago
I bet you make tons of friends with that attitude, no one is more popular than the obnoxious person who keeps trying to 'correct your beliefs'.
[–]alexdelicious 0 points1 point2 points 48 minutes ago
I come from a very actively religious Christian family. I am the only atheist. There is only one person that thinks evolution and astronomy are made up and unprovable and he is an otherwise intelligent person. I don't spend my time or effort discussing the existence of deities or an afterlife.
[–]alexdelicious 0 points1 point2 points 39 minutes ago
But I do make an effort to show him as much evidence as possible that his version of creation is wrong and has been proven to be wrong through centuries of reproducible observations and tests.
After several dozen attempts at showing him all this information he still refused to accept that the yec is an impossibility, I just told him that that he is obviously free to believe what he believes, just don't tell anyone that he wants to respect him what he believes.
[–]ImNotSalinger 0 points1 point2 points 3 hours ago
Right or wrong they can let him believe what he believes without sabotaging their friendship. If they are best friends and he is JUST finding out he is a creationist, it didn't matter before, why make it a big deal now? This is why religion is so annoying and wrong, because people pollute other's minds and try to convert them. If this recent discovery matters that much to the OP he is no better than a fundie, it is a personal choice and no one is trying to force anything down anyone's throat, so keepit that way. I'm not saying gradually, over time subtly drawing them away from religion, but there is honestly no need to make a big deal of it.
Your friends probably don't appreciate that as much as you think they do. If you did that to me I'd think you were a dick, and be even less likely to accept what you're saying.
[–]Khenir 0 points1 point2 points 1 hour ago
You know that thing that we atheists hate that theists do?
Thing where they say: "God exists and we're going to prove it to you because it's our duty and we don't care if it bugs the crap out of you"?
Yeah, that's what your describing.
[–]alexdelicious 0 points1 point2 points 30 minutes ago
No. This is different. If your friend believes thunder is caused by god bowling and lighteningis when he gets a strike, wouldn't you tell him about the atmospheric reasons that these events occur or would you just say: oh his beliefs are equal to that of the scientists that have studied these events over centuries and have observed, and tested their findings over and over again. Or would you let your supposed friend walk around telling people that he does not know something so basic about life?
Tell me how that is being a dick.
[–]Toofifty 3 points4 points5 points 10 hours ago
What the deuce?
[–]SteelCrossx 1 point2 points3 points 4 hours ago
I have a friend that is and we've discussed it a couple of times. He says things like "I just don't buy it" when talking about evolution and "Then why are there still monkeys?" Surprisingly, we have a more heated debate discussing midichlorians in Star Wars than evolution. I do occasionally have a problem when we discuss why people do things and I say "because we evolved to... oh wait."

In the GIF, what does Brian say to Stewie? I've seen it a few times before.
[–]Friendly_hazard 0 points1 point2 points 12 hours ago
Why was he surprised if he knew he was a creationist himself?
[–]phuxen 1 point2 points3 points 4 hours ago
I'm sure this turned your life upside down face
[–]MomsNipples -7 points-6 points-5 points 12 hours ago
OMG someone I know is not an atheist!
[–]n1ght5talker 16 points17 points18 points 12 hours ago
I get your point, but there is a big step between just a Christian and a creationist.
Most of the larger denominations have now accepted evolution to a degree, so much so that being a creationist is pretty much the 'extremest' or 'fundamentalist' view.
So basically this is a 'I found out my best friend is a fundie', which I would find very surprising
[–]prajnadhyana 6 points7 points8 points 12 hours ago
I think the "stupid" is a better description.
[–]Lexirox -5 points-4 points-3 points 11 hours ago
Dude. If you're really his friend then you shouldn't care. You're a bad friend and i feel sorry for him.
[–]beatsandpulses -6 points-5 points-4 points 5 hours ago
You do realise this makes you as bad as people that make people feel bad for being atheists?
[–]alexdelicious 1 point2 points3 points 4 hours ago
Nope. Very different.
[–]beatsandpulses 0 points1 point2 points 3 hours ago
How do you figure?
[–]imbeingsirius 5 points6 points7 points 2 hours ago
Because one has evidence, and is fact or "true" as we like to say, and the other is blatantly false, that one could only believe after years of indoctrination.
[–]Meyerd 0 points1 point2 points 1 hour ago
Okay this is why everyone hates us, because we have people who cannot see both sides of the story. Yeah I don't believe in religion, but you are doing the exact same thing they are by making other feel bad for a belief, Why don't we lead by example? Maybe everyone wouldn't think we are arrogant ass hats. I don't see that happening.
Down vote all you want, just because we are right and they are wrong doesn't make it okay to stoop to their level, be ass holes, and then flip out when we don't get respect in return.
[–]imbeingsirius 1 point2 points3 points 52 minutes ago
I don't consider this "being as bad as them". Someone trying to indoctrinate you with BS and someone telling you the truth when you are wrong is objectively different. Just because they feel the same to the person saying it, doesn't make it the same. And if you think that subjective reasoning is as good as objective thinking, then: I, for one, came to accept my reason, my love of science and atheism because my boyfriend continued to tell me interesting things about popular science and challenge my formerly religious, or at least spiritual, wishy-washy thinking. I am grateful for his intervention.
But this is just a subjective viewpoint. Objectively (I think) it's better to be told the truth (and OP never said anything about being a sick about it) then told a lie, even if the liar thinks it's truth. Even if their your friend.
[–]alexdelicious 0 points1 point2 points 23 minutes ago
This isn't a debate about religion.
If this person is your friend, helping him know a scientific theory (please understand my use of this word) is just being a good friend.
Spending time trying to not believe in deities is different.
[–]Blitzer19 -9 points-8 points-7 points 7 hours ago
OP is just as bad as most religious zealots that will try to force an idea down someones throat. And obviously if he is your best friend you've known him for a long time and keeps it to himself. Since this is reddit and I already know I'm going to get downvoted to all hell, have a meme. You're a bad friend and you should feel bad.
[–]BEZthePEZ[S] 2 points3 points4 points 1 hour ago
well that escalated quickly
[–]alexdelicious 0 points1 point2 points 4 hours ago
It's not just an idea though. That is the big issue. He is not surprised that he believes in god, he is surprised that he believes in the rediculous creation myth as "scientific" fact.
