That brings up a good point: why doesn't The Doctor beat people up anymore? He used to beat people up in the old series but in the new one I haven't seen him throw a single punch.

[–]IdidnotresurfaceTARDIS[S] 78 points79 points ago

He's become less of a cranky old man and more compassionate for one.

[–]Baron_WobblyhorseTennant 69 points70 points ago

Also the new series started with Eccleston's PTSD-type gloomy post-war character, and since then he's been really anti-violence, so that may also explain some of it.

It struck me a few times too when watching classic series though - Tom Baker even carries a gun around for a while, and 3 knew a fair bit of Aikido/Jiu Jitsu to boot!

Although, series 7 spoiler

[–]Hammerspace 16 points17 points ago

I love the look on Baker's eyes as the smoke clears.

[–]RuafaolGaiscioch 12 points13 points ago

I honestly never thought the old Doctor would kill people, having only seen the new.

[–]AspelSilence 7 points8 points ago

Having only seen the new, I imagine The Doctor finds guns quaint and inefficient. How is he supposed to commit genocide with a pistol?

[–]RuafaolGaiscioch 4 points5 points ago

Yeah, but it's always a reluctant genocide.

[–]AspelSilence 7 points8 points ago

After the third or fourth genocide, it's really time to have an intervention.

[–]tardisrider613TARDIS -1 points0 points ago

Certainly the Doctor never killed people, at least not intentionally. There were a few instances when #3 would use his "Venusian Akido" or plain old fisticuffs (Queensberry rules, of course) to knock somebody out, but you could see that it was never deadly and was very much in his Doctor's sort of style.

The only scene that I can recall of the top of my head where the Doctor carries a gun is in Talons of Weng Chiang when #4 carries a hunting rifle because they're hunting a giant rat in the sewer. There are a few scenes when he takes guns away from people.

I don't recall which DVD this was on, but I remember hearing Tom Baker talk about how he insisted that characters who got shot would always be shot in the arm or shoulder or something so that it would obviously be non-lethal.

[–]mmm_burrito 13 points14 points ago

Did you watch that montage? In the last clip Baker appears to snap a guy's neck bare handed.

[–]ThloweDavison 5 points6 points ago

Although if I recall, that was an android.

[–]TheHalfbadger 6 points7 points ago

Oh, well then it's totally okay.

[–]rooklaw 11 points12 points ago

Certainly the Doctor never killed people, at least not intentionally.

You clearly didn't click on the above poster's link where the Doctor is shown killing many people quite intentionally.

[–]tardisrider613TARDIS 1 point2 points ago

Yes, but have you actually seen that story? It wasn't a person, it was a robot disguised as a person.

[–]tardisrider613TARDIS 1 point2 points ago

You're right, I hadn't seen that montage. I have now seen it, though, and I recognized most of the clips enough to understand them in the context of their episodes. For example, the clip of #4 snapping "someone's" neck was from "The Pyramids of Mars" and the "someone" was actually a robot, not a real person. Also, while I understand that this is an arguable position, I don't think zapping Cybermen or Sontarans is the same as killing "people".

I will say though that perhaps I was mistaken when I said that he never killed anyone "intentionally." He may have killed some people/monsters intentionally, but those killings were always in the context of self-defense or in defense of someone else. I guess it would have been more accurate to have said he never killed anyone needlessly or wantonly, which is in fact quite different from saying that the deaths were unintentional. The character has not always been written to be a complete pacifist, but he's never been written to be a murderer, either.

[–]packerbacker1221Silence 0 points1 point ago

As a former Aikido student, that's meant to be able to incapacitate someone without hurting them, i.e. twisting their arm and putting them on the ground, making them unable to fight but not breaking anything,

[–]PWN3R_RANGERSmith 21 points22 points ago

When that spoiler happened I was all:

[–]arienh4Silence 2 points3 points ago

I already knew it would happen because of the preview. It was still a nice moment.

[–]GJCaesar1138McCoy 1 point2 points ago

I knew he'd say Eleven. Moffat just can't help himself.

[–]thaspaam 3 points4 points ago

That scene reminded me of a lot of zombie movies, specifically the kind of thing that would happen in Dawn of the Dead (the original).

[–]thaspaam 12 points13 points ago

I remember a time in The Visitation when the Fifth Doctor beat up a dude who was pointing a gun at him. That isn't cranky old man thinking, that's just the thinking of someone with a gun pointed at his face.

[–]IdidnotresurfaceTARDIS[S] 7 points8 points ago

Well, I was more so thinking of the first doctor. Who I think could have used a nap.

[–]greenthumble 5 points6 points ago

Hmm for throwing punches I think Jon Pertwee wins the award for the sheer number of physical attacks. He was practically going around judo-chopping people all the time.

[–]Mrmooncraft 2 points3 points ago

Maybe because he's so traumatized after killing all the time lords that he wants to solve all his problems with (mostly) peace from now on?

[–]AptspireSmith 8 points9 points ago

[–]finallymadeanaccount 8 points9 points ago

The original question?

Doctor Who?

[–]Raxiel 0 points1 point ago

No i meant the "why doesn't the doctor beat people up anymore"

[–]packerbacker1221Silence 4 points5 points ago

[–]tomdarch 10 points11 points ago

Much less punching. More genocide.

[–]IdidnotresurfaceTARDIS[S] 9 points10 points ago

"Fear me. I've killed hundreds of Timelords."

"Fear me. I killed all of them."

[–]nermid 6 points7 points ago

I wanted so much to be old and wise, like you do when you're young...

The Doctor is a lonely, sad old man.

[edit] and/or a mad man with a blue box.

[–]iamplasma 3 points4 points ago

He did beat up a few of the "undead" in the crashed pod in the latest episode, though I will admit to being very surprised when that happened.

[–]ParlHillAddictHartnell 2 points3 points ago

Heck, in the very serial being referenced here, The Chase, spoiler

It's from the first Doctor, the Doctor is being chased through time and space by the Daleks. I belive it's from the season 2 and is called The Chase. All the episodes are intact.

Saw it a couple of months ago, great series.

That story was one of my favorites from the First Doctor... so many different sets and characters and little side stories all packed into it. A friend of mine had never seen any of the originals and when he asked to see one, I made him watch this story.

Side note: the scene where spoiler was my favorite part.

[–]femmenonTom Baker 7 points8 points ago

...Now I have to get all the classic who episodes. I've been stuck on Baker for a while because he's just so cheeky.

[–]Parabolic_Lemon 8 points9 points ago

I've been watching them all in order, currently about halfway through Baker. You should watch Pertwee, he's got a different sense of humor from Baker, but he's amazing. The chemistry between him and Jo Grant was almost too good, and the constant back-and-forth with the Master was classic.

[–]femmenonTom Baker 11 points12 points ago

Oh the Master...I'm almost afraid.

I'm just intimidated, I suppose. Baker is a good gateway Doctor because he reminds me so much of Tennant. I started with Baker and Sarah Jane because...hello, Sarah Jane.

I'm getting there. I think I'm just afraid of The Doctor being...not right. There's no way to really put it. I think it's the same anxiety I have when he regenerates. Am I gonna like him?

[–]Parabolic_Lemon 7 points8 points ago

That's how I felt when Troughton changed into Pertwee, I saw the production stills and was all "man, he's all proper and boring-looking, he's going to be dull as a rock." But he has this great sense of humor, and unlike the other Doctors, he spends most of his time with the same people in the same general space and time. Because of that, he really gets to build up a deeper relationship with them all, and it makes for a much stronger bond between everyone on the show. And Sarah Jane does get to travel with him for a year or so, which was a great segue into Baker.

That, and he beats the crap out of everyone with his Venusian aikido. They really need to bring back the Venusian aikido.

[–]femmenonTom Baker 4 points5 points ago

Now that sounds like fun. Proper, Doctor scale fun. No longer afraid, gotta delve into the awesome bad sci-fi effects.

[–]benhaymanColin Baker 1 point2 points ago

yes you are, if not right away, over time

[–]femmenonTom Baker 0 points1 point ago

Good to know. I'll have to start collecting some classic Who episodes. I get to have all the Doctor Who!

What's funny, is that I had a friend who spent 6 years trying to get me into Doctor Who. He has every episode (starting at the first Doctor) of Doctor Who on DVD and such.

We stopped talking, and about a month later I started watching Doctor Who.

/random story end

[–]benhaymanColin Baker 1 point2 points ago

Haha wow, I have a friend with every episode (that exists) on DVD, as well as a complete Big Finish collection. About two months after starting to watch Doctor Who I ended up moving into his house and then it was a lot more convenient to watch it. :P

Honestly, I think Four and Eleven are the only Doctors that I was IMMEDIATELY sold on. And they're not even my favourites. Some of them take a little while to warm up to, and some of them are working in a time when Doctor Who overall just wasn't at its best, but they all have a lot to love about them.

The specific warnings I would keep in mind are that the first few One serials are horribly paced but it gets so much better (and One has one of the best arcs of any Doctor, because he didn't even like humans at first.) The Sixth Doctor's era is generally regarded as pretty bad (I like, but I don't think people are wrong for seeing it that way either :/ ) and if you see the potential in Six to be awesome you'll be happy to know that Big Finish has rescued the character amazingly. Also they don't actually figure out what they want the Seventh Doctor to be like until his second season. But the first is fun nonetheless.

But yeah, enjoying all the Doctors is the most fun way to Doctor Who! :D

[–]insilico23 0 points1 point ago

I always feel like this for a new Doctor or companion... And always love them.

[–]saved_by_grace 3 points4 points ago

I liked the Perwee doctors era mainly because of unit. It was interesting seeing the doctor interact with a military organization. Especially since he always took charge despite the brigidere(sp?)(one of my favorite non-doctor characters) being his superior.

[–]peacefulacrezEccleston 1 point2 points ago

Hey, you did ask for spelling.

[–]mmm_burrito 1 point2 points ago

Special weapons dalek?

[–]unreal2k5TARDIS 2 points3 points ago

I did a quick search on Special weapons dalek. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PSD4RFEzRWs

Don't know if this it. was it in the new episode?

[–]tbwright77TARDIS 0 points1 point ago

Yes it was, I think there's an image floating around here of it, I had no idea that it packed that much fire power, imagine how difficult it must have been to subdue O_O .

[–]Quady 1 point2 points ago

I believe somewhere in one of the old who episodes they stat that that firepower is so radioactive that it makes all the special weapons daleks go insane...

Hence, asylum!

[–]SegamanXeroTom Baker 1 point2 points ago

Was kinda disappointed that it didn't have more of a role in the episode. I was expecting it to have more of an active role.

[–]mmm_burrito 0 points1 point ago

Ok, now that we know what the SW Dalek is, can you tell me where it is in the episode? I looked, but didn't see it.

[–]Ejb4444 0 points1 point ago

The Doctor puts the self destructing Dalek in reverse. As it crashes into the crowd of Daleks, you can see the SW Dalek in the left corner of the group during that shot from above.

[–]MannyVazquez93 4 points5 points ago

If Matt Smith does this in a future episode I'll love him for all of the evers.

[–]DeadAimHeadshot 3 points4 points ago

crazy I just finished watching that episode just now, also people were saying dalek's don't like using humans, but yet you see them make a "replica" robot of the doctor in the very next episode in the classics

[–]IdidnotresurfaceTARDIS[S] 0 points1 point ago

The Doctor isn't human...

[–]DeadAimHeadshot 2 points3 points ago

if you watch the episode I cited you'll hear them refer to him as humanoid....

I never said he was human....

regardless they've used humans in current seasons too....

Dalek's sometimes need humans to do dirty work, even though they hate humans why not make some thralls?

they can infiltrate where dalek's cannot....

dalek's are known to be geniuses so it's pretty smart to use humans like this...

[–]Sir_VyvinTARDIS 3 points4 points ago

In tonight's episode, I recall them saying Daleks are constantly evolving to survive "the predator".

[–]djasonwright 1 point2 points ago

Something along those lines. spoiler

spoiler

Edit: Learning to spoiler, and I accidentally the Quotation Marks. And the "#s", fuuuuuuudgah. oh, and you can't have a carriage return, apparently. I know this is all unnecessary, but I figured - where better to learn than in a spoiler thread?

[–]nermid 11 points12 points ago

A friend and I were watching this, and I paused the episode to point out that, 10 minutes in, I had already plotted out in my head that A) the girl was a Dalek, and that B) the best possible ending would be a callback to the first episode with the Daleks, with Rory crawling into a Dalek like Ian Chesterton with the First Doctor.

I started describing an ending where the Doctor and Amy were surrounded by Daleks shouting "EX-TERM-IN-ATE!" and they were both gibbering wrecks, hopelessly lost, when a Dalek just came out of nowhere and blasted the others to dust, then approached them, saying "DOC-TOOOOOR!" And fucking out pops Rory, complaining about how stuffy it is inside of one of these things.

She was speechless. I still think it would've been a better ending.

[–]djasonwright 6 points7 points ago

It's good, but then you couldn't have the Amy+Rory make-up scene and "why didn't he just tell us..?"- cut to the Doctor fixing his bowtie (or did I make that up and it was a quick look at the camera?). I effin' loved that bit.

[–]nermid 4 points5 points ago

You seem to be under the impression that, after Rory saved Amy from a crowd of crazed psycho Daleks, Amy wouldn't kiss Rory for being the kind of silly git who complains about it being stuffy inside of a killer robot shell while saving his ex-wife's life.

And the Doctor would totally fix his bowtie and pretend he had the whole "rescue followed by a kiss" thing planned out from the start. And Amy would call bullshit on it. And the Doctor would dismiss her objections because they have to get out of there, and calling him out on not having a real plan is just wasting time.

[–]djasonwright 1 point2 points ago

Yeah, but that would've felt - to me at least, like one of those adrenaline snogs. We already know Amy's an action-junkie. Happens in every single Hollywood Action Blockbuster.

They'd have kissed and made up, gone home and boned, and none of the underlying problem(s) would've been addressed.

Now that I've written it out, I like that scene even more.

[–]nermid 3 points4 points ago

Personally, I disliked how that all turned out, anyway. Suddenly, Rory was a self-important dick and Amy was incapable of expressing her feelings (from fucking Amy? Come on Moffat), and the Doctor was magically immune to the nanogenes.

It made no sense for their characters, whereas Rory being an unreasonably resourceful guy who saves Amy where the Doctor fails to do so and they live happily ever after is pretty much exactly Rory's character.

Also, fuck everything; I wanted somebody to pop out of a Dalek. It would've been better than the random-ass "suddenly I explode" self-destruct, when we've already seen in the new series that the Dalek self-destruct involves a cool self-contained spherical implosion (from back during Christopher Eccleston's run).

[–]djasonwright 2 points3 points ago

I also was hoping for a recreation of Ian's gambit. You're right on that front... It would've been sweet.

Edit: and it's a shame about the 'splosion, because the spherical implosion would've had the radius to take out the others too (with a little tweaking). And been a nice nod to continuity.

[–]nermid 3 points4 points ago

There were Daleks with their tops taken off, or their tops crooked. I was all kinds of excited.

[–]Jakeman52Dalek 1 point2 points ago

Fucking spoilers bro.

[–]nermid -1 points0 points ago

What spoilers?

I mean, nevermind that this is a spoiler thread, but what spoilers?

[–]bultonic 3 points4 points ago

The fact that you mentioned the girl was a dalek.

[–]nermid 3 points4 points ago

That was specifically mentioned as a prediction, just like how I predicted that Rory would pop out of a Dalek.

And if you hadn't fucking pointed it out, this wouldn't have revealed any real plot details at all.

[–]reon3-_ 2 points3 points ago

I thought that cracking open the top of the dalek was a pretty good reference to the very classic series.

[–]TheGallifreyanColin Baker 3 points4 points ago
