media-worker hugs. We have it pretty cool in that everyone is getting an extra day off in the next two weeks, and for most people it's attached to their regular days off. I drew the short straw and get no days attached to eachother. I will get 3 single/separated days off in the two weeks between my next "weekend"(my weekend is mon/tues) and the one after.

at my old job they counted the midnight shift as the prior day, if you got to work at midnight and stayed until 8 am it counted as working the previous day, so try getting stuck with a night shift on new years eve and not getting vacation pay. but the asshole that comes in the morning, evening, and night on jan 1st get double time and a half.

See, what's great is that I normally work weekends anyways, but since I do 4 10-hour shifts, I get three day weekends every week. No seriously, what's an extra two hours when you're already there for eight-and-a-half? And the best part is that being in a tech support call center, my first work day every week (Saturday for you normal people) is slow, and Sundays are even slower. On any given Sunday, I'm likely to take less than 20 calls, with an average handle time (call time + after-call work and logging, etc) of under 10 minutes.

I do IT and this long weekend I am on "weekend support" which means I check the emergency email and voicemail every couple of hours to make sure nothing major happened. So basically, I get paid holiday pay for three days for checking email every few hours. So I just want to apologize that you've got to actually work.

Labor Day, in the US, means many people get their normal weekend, Saturday and Sunday, off - plus Monday for the holiday. Having never had a 3 day weekend because of a holiday (I work Saturdays every week), I'm skeptical, but I keep hearing about this 3-day-weekend thing. I'm curious, and wish I could find out more.

We do get breaks - not as much as you guys - not nearly as much as we probably need - but we do get them. I see people complain a lot on here about lack of vacation time in the US, but it depends on the company one works for, and the job one has at that company. People who work in fast food in minimum wage jobs rarely get much (if any) vacation time, but people in jobs like IT get more. I've worked for this company about 5 1/2 years. I get about 3 weeks a year of sick and vacation time all put into one pool. I get paid holidays - so even though I usually work them, I get paid 2x normal for it. I get medical insurance, along with dental and vision. Besides getting slightly more vacation time, it's been more than a decade since I worked for a company that didn't offer those things.
I think reddit's perspective is a tad skewed because of the general demographic here - younger people who haven't made it very far in their careers yet.

I have bronchitis, and a note that I shouldn't work until Monday - but I'm scheduled Wednesday through Saturday. If I don't work today and next Wednesday, I don't get my holiday pay for Monday - and I spent all my money on the doctor and medication. So, here I am at work, sick as a dog, AND not getting a 3 day weekend. Sucks.

Because I work in the entertainment industry (Live theatre, Festivals, Film) as a stage/set Rigger, there is no such thing as public holidays because the holidays is when work is available. A good year can bring in 80-120k, a bad year, I can earn less than 3k.

Most pro's demand $35 an hour, But with the festivals being run on public holidays events management can have their pick of any teenager who needs some cash, I worked one Labour day fair where I was the only one licensed to rig at height, So I found myself doing the work of 10 staff, simply because it was cheaper to hire one qualified person and 10 unqualified teenagers. The only reason I was chosen to be that one qualified person is because I agreed to work for minimum wage (a healthy $22) while others in my industry want at least $25. But when you are working 15-20 hours per shift, with up to 6 shifts a week, heavy lifting, strongman-style, You need good pay, because once you hit 40 your body gives up on you and you can't work in the same field.
