Anyone else twitch at the website's domain name?

[–]willyolio 21 points22 points ago

absolutely. they could have put the "lol" portion at the end and removed the redundant "l." they should have named it roflmaool.

[–]Dakrun 5 points6 points ago

That just looks uncomfortably close to saying AOL.

[–]enimem -1 points0 points ago

Assing Out Loud ?

[–]DirtPile 5 points6 points ago

LOL

[–]Stokeszilla 232 points233 points ago

[–]A_Rolling_Baneling 138 points139 points ago

Honestly the video is so much funnier than reading it panel by panel. QI in general is hilarious, I can't see the benefit of linking to imgur over youtube here.

[–]mynamejesse1334 124 points125 points ago

people are more likely to click on an imgur link while at work or on their phone so this way they stand to gain more karma

[–]CaliToast 84 points85 points ago

Everyone assumes its always for karma but pretty simple to see how images like this are beneficial. While redditing at work, youtube being blocked at school, internet speed too slow to even load the entire video. I will never have a problem with pictures like these even though the only time I'm on reddit is from my room with great speeds because i know they'll help out at least a couple other people out there get a quick laugh.

[–]p0diabl0 14 points15 points ago

It's also a lot easier to sneak a quick image peek than listen/watch a video.

[–]CaliToast 2 points3 points ago

True, so whether or not for karma, the rage over posting image clips needs to calm the fuck down.

[–]DownvoteALot 6 points7 points ago

All of this is precisely why the reason why images are more popular than videos. It says nothing on OP.

Now we ask: why does OP use images? Because of karma or because he is being nice to people who have problems with videos? Or both?

[–]kakianyx[S] 42 points43 points ago

Because she is being nice to people, of course!

[–]Solonys 6 points7 points ago

Carry on then.

[–]RobertTheSpruce 3 points4 points ago

Have karma, for being nice.

[–]jaggerestep -1 points0 points ago

It sure feels like she got upvotes just because she said "she."

[–]robopilgrim 0 points1 point ago

Plus I'm listening to music which I don't want to have to keep pausing to watch a video.

[–]literallyagooch 6 points7 points ago

That's the biggest reason, but I'm also far more likely to view an image because it takes me like two seconds to read it.

[–]DannyAces 1 point2 points ago

And if the text is big enough to read without clicking the link at all, you'll get more karma still.

[–]mynamejesse1334 0 points1 point ago

next-level redditing

[–]cajual 14 points15 points ago

Except this isn't from imgur....

[–]cynognathus 2 points3 points ago

You mean you don't go to lolroflmao.com everyday? /s

[–]imasunbear 3 points4 points ago

Karma

[–]iamatestpilot 1 point2 points ago

To be fair, linking to the video is arguably copyright infringement.

[–]ATONAT 1 point2 points ago

I agree, but I am actually an expert at doing any of their voices in my head by now, so this was a nonissue for me.

[–]Zorblax 0 points1 point ago

Because with RES you do not have to open anything, it opens all image links for you, so that you can just scroll down an look (and resize from time to time). Youtubevids have t be expanded, then you have to press play, and finally watch it. So much easier to just glance down at the next open picture below the link below if its added in the proper way :)

[–]HalfRations 11 points12 points ago

[–]NoNeedForAName 2 points3 points ago

Thanks. For some reason lolroflmao.com is having trouble loading.

[–]robodrew 1 point2 points ago

Probably because it's trying to load an unnecessarily large image to an unnecessarily large amount of people...

[–]Tister_Mibbs 4 points5 points ago

I love QI. :)

[–]tyrannischgott -1 points0 points ago

This is one of those ones where you really have to watch the full video. The delivery is just superb.

[–]deanbmmv 27 points28 points ago

His cat anagram is still Carr's best QI moment.

[–]dazheb 7 points8 points ago

I feel like it was staged because it's too perfect. I will go in believing it just happened but part of me is sure it was staged. Nothing that perfect ever happens.

[–]ohgeronimo 10 points11 points ago

There's a certain amount of downtime not shown during episodes where Stephen's asked them the question and they sit there trying to write down witty things to say in response. So to a certain extent most the jokes are staged, but generally made up in the studio in fairly quick time.

[–]nicholstristan 3 points4 points ago

YouTube comments point out he has many more letters than Bill Bailey, they probably just traded.

[–]notbookies 2 points3 points ago

If the letters were said to be random, I agree. Even if he was some sort of anagram genius, the chance of random letters forming a coherent sentence (with no leftovers, which is unbelievable by itself) is just too slim.

[–]shadybrainfarm 1 point2 points ago

I watched a clip on the making of QI and apparently they film each episode live for like 3 or 4 hours, and then edit down the best bits for the 45 minute show, but everything is still improvised.

Apparently the audience gets really bored sometimes though, and they re-tell jokes because they didn't get as good of a reaction out of the half asleep crowd the first time, haha.

[–]louky 0 points1 point ago

See, id like shows like this to release the raw footage. They already do the XL version.

[–]TheRhythmTheRebel 1 point2 points ago

He has a joke with this punchline in one of his first two DVD's. Cannot remember which..still very impressive.

[–]Belaires 1 point2 points ago

I wish these were posted with series/episode info

[–]thebulldogfront 29 points30 points ago

What show is this? I feel dumb not knowing. And when ever I see these I'm to afraid to ask. Can someone message me. I hope there aren't any spelling errors either.

[–]HMS_Pathicus 60 points61 points ago

QI (Quite Interesting), a British comedy show. Four comedians try to answer misleading and quite interesting questions posed by Stephen Fry, the host and one of the best comedians in the UK.

There's Quite Interesting and Quite Interesting XL. All of them are on Youtube. Series 1 is "A", series 2 is "B"... so the topics for the episodes all begin with the letter corresponding to the series.

Series I, for example, features episodes dedicated to subjects such as "Inbroglio", "Indecision", "International", "Invertebrates", "Incomprehension", "Inequality"...

As Stephen Fry quite rightly explains: "I give points for attitude and take points away for platitude". Also, nobody quite understands the actual system to award points, because winning and/or losing is not really the main goal. They strive to have and create fun.

And Alan Davies is always one of the four contestants, always playing the fool, but being really really funny (and often extremely insightful). I love him.

EDIT: Also, take into account it's a British show, so they have no qualms laughing about everything, including homosexuality (Fry is quite notoriously famously gay) and religion. Once, however, they did beep out the word "fuck". If you're easily offended, you shouldn't watch it. If you like humour, please watch the fuck out of it.

[–]DubiousPig 21 points22 points ago

If you're easily offended, you shouldn't watch it.

As a Brit, I find this comment pretty funny considering that QI is one of the least offensive comedy panel shows I can think of.

[–]mostly_kittens 4 points5 points ago

Yeah QI was specifically created to be nice and gentle while still being funny.

[–]MoarVespenegas 7 points8 points ago

He might have meant "If you are American and can't take jokes about your country."
But then you might want to stay away from British TV altogether.

[–]kobie 14 points15 points ago

There was one time Alan Davies wasn't on the show because he went to a football (soccer) match.

[–]catboogers 1 point2 points ago

Well, that wasn't his fault. I blame the Doctor.

[–]kobie 0 points1 point ago

Was that the same episode David Tennant was is?

[–]IchooseYou 1 point2 points ago

No he just used the TARDIS disappearing noise to show him not being there, it was series D episode Divination. David Tennant was on "Groovy" in the G series.

[–]ReinH 10 points11 points ago

QI, where the questions are made up and the points don't matter.

[–]deanbmmv 7 points8 points ago

As far as comedy quiz panels go it's exceedingly tame on the offensive scale compared to the likes of mock the week, especially with Boyle on.

[–]HMS_Pathicus 7 points8 points ago

Most people expect irreverence and offensive remarks from other shows, but this one being so "nice", some people are taken aback when the guests laugh at some things.

I've seen people from the US flabbergasted at how "casually" Fry and his guests laugh at religion, for example. It's not that the show it's offensive per se, it's just that some people are not used to everything being up for discussion and laughs. I find it really refreshing.

BTW, I will watch "mock the week", I had never heard of it. Thank you!

[–]deanbmmv 5 points6 points ago

Ah yeah. I guess religion is a bit of a funny topic over here compared to US.

btw Mock the Week is topical (as kinda hinted at in the name) which can mean it requires a bit more context compared to general quiz show like QI.

[–]Britredditor 1 point2 points ago

You had better watch Mock The Week. It's hilarious. Also:

Have I Got News For You
Would I lie to you?
8/10 cats.

[–]Holcat27 4 points5 points ago

Don't forget Never Mind The Buzzcocks! Particularly the Simon Amstell era (although his particular brand of comedy might put more sensitive viewers off).
It seems we have no end of light-hearted panel shows. Which are always repeated on Dave.

[–]Sidnv 2 points3 points ago

The Amstell era episodes with Preston, Donnie Tourette and Amy Winehouse were brilliant. I also liked the Doctor Who themed one and the ones hosted by Frankie Boyle.

[–]Holcat27 0 points1 point ago

And any with Tim Minchin!

[–]tellurian 0 points1 point ago

The now show, current events radio show British humour at its finest http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b006qgt7

[–]louky 0 points1 point ago

As an American I find this and the casual homosexual references to be delightful.

Stephen Fry For Pope!

Edit: "Ohh my, that is most disturbing."

[–]Sidnv 0 points1 point ago

Mock the Week hasn't been the same since Frankie Boyle left. The first 6 seasons or so were good.

[–]jingowatt 1 point2 points ago

notoriously gay!

[–]manicooller -1 points0 points ago

I'm a lurker, and I approve this message.

[–]hookeslaw 39 points40 points ago

Just like stealing from your own government. I mean.. Its YOUR government.

[–]codeswinwars 19 points20 points ago

One of my favourite quotes of all time is from George Orwell, he said 'I would avoid my taxes if I could, and yet I would die for my country. Nobody is patriotic about taxes.' It's as true now as it was then, almost everyone sees taxes as burdensome even when there is obvious value in paying them.

[–]bunburya 11 points12 points ago

"I like paying taxes. With them I buy civilization." - Oliver Wendell Holmes.

[–]codeswinwars 0 points1 point ago

Holmes was somewhat right for his time but I would argue that, in context, Orwell's quote is much more relevant to the modern taxpayer. He talks about how people are squeezed for money even as the government destroys their method of income. Quite similar to the modern situation where the middle-classes in the US, UK etc are expected to pay for something they had little involvement in.

[–]bunburya 0 points1 point ago

Orwell may have better reflected the mindset of the average man, but Holmes was nevertheless right, for Orwell's time and our time as well as his own. Taxes still pay for road maintenance, social welfare, law enforcement etc. Ironically, Orwell's quote may have been more relevant in Holmes' country, and Holmes' quote more relevant in Orwell's country, where healthcare and education are dependent to a larger degree on the tax system.

[–]cynognathus 1 point2 points ago

Oliver Wendall Holmes: "Taxes are what we pay for a civilized society."

[–]kim_jong_illin 2 points3 points ago

[–]Fabrelol 1 point2 points ago

are people still hung up on this?

[–]hookeslaw 23 points24 points ago

I don't really think most people ever cared. Its just fun to take the piss out of him.

[–]Red_Dog1880 2 points3 points ago

He took the piss out of himself too about that.

[–]aldude3 1 point2 points ago

I take the piss out of me twice a day.

[–]knowpunintended -4 points-3 points ago

You don't own a government, though. Realistically, a government owns you. They can demand that other governments stop playing with you and make them give you back. Of course, people only listen if they're really nice or you're a bigger bully than them but what are you gonna do? Them's playground rules.

[–]Drawtaru 7 points8 points ago

Now I'm going to be looking for an opportunity to cover my face with both hands and yell "LAUGHTER!"

[–]bastard_thought 10 points11 points ago

From youtube:

The irony is that his last name is Carr so presumably he would be beating his Carr, if his wife followed traditional naming conventions.

Perhaps not irony, but still. I hadn't thought of this.

[–]LucasTheGreat 5 points6 points ago

Sean Connery's perspective: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oo0d1zTAFKA

[–]thecodyk 40 points41 points ago

Jimmy Carr is great.

[–]Seruz 79 points80 points ago

Nu-uh David Mitchell is bester!

[–]tubadeedoo 44 points45 points ago

[–]quigglyboom 14 points15 points ago

This seems so out of character.

[–]tubadeedoo 14 points15 points ago

It was definitely sarcastic on his part.

[–]aldude3 2 points3 points ago

It scared me.

[–]Todomanna 11 points12 points ago

Yeah, well, I think both are better.

[–]Lonestardangerwolf 24 points25 points ago

Stephen Fry FTW!

[–]mongzords 0 points1 point ago

Fuck off pal, Charlie Brooker for supreme overlord

[–]doyoulove 0 points1 point ago

Nope, that's Walter Koenig.

[–]MufasadaRasta 4 points5 points ago

Love this show! Perfect Panel = Alan Davies, Jimmy Carr, Phil Jupitus, and Bill Bailey

[–]Sidnv 0 points1 point ago

There's too many good panelists to make a perfect panel. And I can't condone leaving out David Mitchell and Sean Lock.

[–]SlapTheBacon 15 points16 points ago

Fuck yeah, QI!

[–]EpicJ 14 points15 points ago

If there's one think UK can do right, it is panel shows with comedians and QI has some of the best talent

[–]Tacksmaster 2 points3 points ago

And this isn't an acronym? I've seen this show all over the place and wanted to know what it was callled.

[–]roseetgris 11 points12 points ago

It's called QI officially, but it stands for "Quite Interesting"

[–]Iateyourpaintings 9 points10 points ago

No, it's an initialism.

[–]FuchsiaGauge 0 points1 point ago

And an acronym.

[–]MattyFTM 4 points5 points ago

No, an acronym is an initialism that is pronounced as a word. For instance, NASA, because you say it like a word. You say nasa, you don't say each letter. You don't pronounce QI like a word, you say each letter.

[–]pilapfs 0 points1 point ago

No, because you say the letters 'Q I', not 'qi' as a word, therefore it's not an acronym.

[–]EpicJ 2 points3 points ago

QI stands for quite interesting, it's the show hosted by Stephen Fry

[–]thefreq 3 points4 points ago

Is it on Netflix or Hulu? I want to watch it here in the US.

[–]TheGreatSzalam 10 points11 points ago

It's on YouTube. No legal way to watch it here of which I'm aware (besides buying DVD's which may have to be imported and then played on a Region 2 DVD player...)

[–]smackfairy 4 points5 points ago

Yup, most if not all the episodes are on yt. Just search "QI s01e01" and so on.

[–]louky 1 point2 points ago

You forgot to add XL.

[–]smackfairy 1 point2 points ago

Ah yes! I did. I don't think all of them are the xl ones though. Just later seasons that I can find.

[–]louky 1 point2 points ago

Yeah they only released XL for the later seasons, as far as I can tell. I wish they would just release the raw footage, its the kind of rhing l like to have on one screen when im working.

[–]smackfairy 0 points1 point ago

You too, eh? It's great to watch while doing something.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

Well that kind of undermines everything else our country has ever done, but I like QI too.

[–]mileenawins 9 points10 points ago

Then Jimmy Carr says, " I like to think I can help."

[–]nicholmikey 3 points4 points ago

After a while his humor becomes taxing

[–]parrotforpresident 0 points1 point ago

YEAH!!!

[–]stuffingisawesome 5 points6 points ago

Never seen this before

[–]The_LuftWalrus -4 points-3 points ago

Here's what I'm going to do. I'm going to save this, wait til November, maybe October, and post it again. I GUARANTEE I'll get at least 1k in karma, because people apparently like seeing the same stuff over and over again. and rather than submitting new content, people would rather mooch off the idiots.

[–]t0mcat 1 point2 points ago

It's different people each time, mang.

[–]slut_patrol 7 points8 points ago

Of all the reposts on reddit, I have encountered this one the most.

[–]mongzords -1 points0 points ago

[–]kerdon 2 points3 points ago

I want the new QI season to hurry up and come oooouuuuuuut!

[–]DirtPile 0 points1 point ago

British folks are extremely attractive.

[–]mongzords 0 points1 point ago

You won't be saying that when you visit a council estate in Liverpool.

[–]aussie_canuck 2 points3 points ago

David Mitchell is so droll...i love him

[–]fucking_leverpostej 2 points3 points ago

WHY IS THIS FUNNY. This joke haunts me like Kanye West and fish sticks. I cannot grasp why this is funny.

Please help.

[–]DeathDeathDeath 0 points1 point ago

The whole idea is that stephen fry says that beating your wife is bad, meaning it in a way that women and men should be equal. Jimmy Carr then also says that beating your wife is bad, but as in the wife is your own property (You own a car, so you wouldn't key it vs. you own a wife so you wouldn't beat it)

Also, another subtility of this joke is that his last name is Carr. So you wouldn't key your Carr (his wife) and you wouldn't beat your wife (his Carr)

[–]downtherabbitholeshe -1 points0 points ago

Fuck me. How is this not funny?

[–]mulletworm -1 points0 points ago

i just spurted coffee out my nose.

[–]thesushicat 1 point2 points ago

That's kind of like my favorite joke, which has the slight variation "Why would you cut off your OWN husband's dick?" I hope you can't sleep tonight because deep down in that soul you might still have, you know this joke is bad and you should feel bad. And now, all aboard the "Downvote the feminist" train! Choo choo.

[–]FuchsiaGauge 3 points4 points ago

I don't think anyone here has actually realized he's talking about a hypothetical wife like she was just property. Like a car. Kind of horrifyingly depressing, actually.

[–]rmest -1 points0 points ago

Jokes like these depress me. The fact that they end up on the front page depresses me more. Guys on reddit wonder why girls won't talk to them...

[–]louky 0 points1 point ago

I never have wondered that.

[–]FuchsiaGauge -1 points0 points ago

That and the imbecilic defense of "But it's just a joke"! Sad times. :(

[–]Dhuske 0 points1 point ago

Are you kidding? That's the entire premise of the joke. How else would this be a joke unless that exact sentiment (which is ridiculous) was being expressed? Everyone who understood the joke understood that. Everyone who thinks it's funny probably thinks so because of the outdated/ridiculous way of thinking. Saying something that's a plain fact is not funny.

Wait, are people disagreeing? I don't understand, what do you think people thought was funny about this picture then, if they didn't even recognize what was being expressed? Your position makes no sense.

[–]hedcraft 2 points3 points ago

The only good kind of feminist is a butthurt one.

[–]hedcraft 0 points1 point ago

The only kind of feminist is a butthurt one.

[–]Pollywaffle -1 points0 points ago

He's talking about a taxing issue here, guys.

[–]runnershighxc -1 points0 points ago

Could you make the text smaller

[–]Revs2Nine -1 points0 points ago

Google "imgur extension for chrome/firefox" so you're not using an incredibly slow source. Also - be sure to link directly to the image on imgur, not the image's page.

[–]louky -1 points0 points ago

The only one i've ever heard of. Who is jim carrey?

[–]Driesens 0 points1 point ago
