What? No! Jesus, people, you're better than this. Photoshop, Photoshop, Photoshop.

A "Blue Moon" is simply the 2nd full moon of the month. Shocking news: It's not blue.

[–]twilight_eyes[S] 14 points15 points ago

Actually it was the camera's temp setting. I dropped it down to a cooler setting to tint the white to a blue. No Photoshop. Indeed. The blue moon was not blue. :o)

[–]RickJamesBond 5 points6 points ago

How far did you drop the temperature settings? About 20%?

I get it!

White balance to tungsten should do the trick

[–]kilocball 0 points1 point ago

Couldn't one argue that it is still "Photoshopped"? I was under the impression that when someone says a picture is ''photoshopped", the picture is altered using some program, be it photoshop or one preloaded on a camera.

[–]carlcon 0 points1 point ago

Fair enough, you got me on a technicality. I wrongly used "Photoshop" as a synonym for edited/altered/unnatural/etc.

I can't wait for all of the dumbfounded fb posts tomorrow when the unlearned hordes realize the moon doesn't turn blue...

[–]potentiallyoffensive 2 points3 points ago

Wait you mean the moon and the sun are two different objects? The moon is not just the sun at night?

[–]MarkSWH 2 points3 points ago

The moon is just the sun at night
And when you walk in golden halls
You get to keep the gold that falls
It's Heaven and Hell, oh no!

You are my hero

Damn you are lucky, i didnt get to see the blue moon last night,it was cloudy as hell, and when it cleared up the moon was gone :(

[–]schmalpal 45 points46 points ago

Blue moons aren't actually blue - from what I understand, the one last night was just labeled as such because it was the second full moon in the month of August (which won't occur again until 2015).

You can take a photo of a fullish moon any time, and just set the white balance on the camera cooler than it should be (say, on tungsten/incandescent) to achieve this exact shot. Hell, you could even step 10 feet back when you did it to avoid getting tree branches over the moon (if you so desired)!

Yep, double full moons in the same month are "rare", which is where the phrase: "once in a blue moon" refers too. It originally came from the volcanic eruption of Krakatoa back in 1883 who's ash in the atmosphere made the moonlight appear bluish in color.

edit: more info:

Krakatoa's ash was the reason. Some of the plumes were filled with particles 1 micron wide, about the same as the wavelength of red light. Particles of this special size strongly scatter red light, while allowing blue light to pass through. Krakatoa’s clouds thus acted like a blue filter. http://science.nasa.gov/science-news/science-at-nasa/2012/29aug_bluemoon/

Indeed. :o) The branches were intentional, made me think of ET.

I caught the moon last night, it was orange by the time I saw it- suggesting it would have been a sweet ass blood moon.

[–]I_STAB_HIPSTER_FILTH 2 points3 points ago

just gets a connector between a Canon T4i and a William Optics 80mm apo

misses the shot

I have no words...

[–]twilight_eyes[S] 1 point2 points ago

Oh wow! That will be so incredible to work with. No worries. Just point it at the next full moon. I had my Canon's temp set to about 3000. Thus the coloration. Can't wait to see what images you'll get from that.

[–]alexsaurrr 0 points1 point ago

Mine will be red (about 2 fires in the area)

[–]Marshnme -1 points0 points ago

aww man i missed it i was looking forward to it to :/ people came over and i forgot about it...sigh

[–]kepleronlyknows 5 points6 points ago

Don't worry, it looked just like any full moon. As has been pointed out in this and other threads, a blue moon is simply a second full moon in a month. Which would obviously have no effect on the moon since months are man-made creations.

[–]Marshnme 0 points1 point ago

o....well thanks haha :)
