You could have made this a [Fixed] post, but instead, you chose to put it in the comments, and for that, Reddit salutes you.

[–]malachi23 5 points6 points ago

Still not as touching as Sad Llama, but otherwise agreed.

[–]zolfe 2 points3 points ago

Currently on a low iodine diet to prepare for radioactive iodine treatment. I know that feel bro.

[–]knylok 0 points1 point ago

I wish I felt like a 900 year old Time Lord with a TARDIS.

[–]Butt_Patties 95 points96 points ago

Get a large bag of chocolate chips, 'bout $2.50-$3.50 (Peanut butter chocolate chips work too, but mix it 50/50 with chocolate or it'll taste like you're just eating peanut butter out of a jar.)

Get a small can of condensed sweetened milk, ~$1.50 or so.

Put 3 cups of the chocolate chips and about half the can of condensed sweetened milk (for one serving) in a pot on a stove top, turn on the stove and mix them constantly. They'll burn hella fast if you don't mix them pretty much the entire time. Keep going until the chips are completely melted.

Pour/scrape it out into a pan of some kind, then stick it in the freezer for 30-60 minutes.

Pull out and cut. NOTE: The fudge can get very hard, I suggest either letting it thaw a bit r heating the knife before cutting.

Eat the shit out of that delicious chocolate (or chocolate & peanut butter) fudge. Note that the chocolate & Peanut butter fudge will taste a little like a Reese's cup.

Seriously, somebody try this recipe and send me back a PM or a comment response. You're paying maybe ~$4.00 for a great treat. I've made it many a time and it turns out great pretty much always.

[–]ChristianYAcevedo 76 points77 points ago

I'll call them Butt Patties in your honor.

[–]Butt_Patties 2 points3 points ago

Be sure to ask your friends if they want any as often as possible.

[–]GD0512 53 points54 points ago

Can I borrow like $3.50?

[–]the_grand_chawhee 20 points21 points ago

It was about that time I noticed GD0512 wasn't a Redditor at all...

[–]skyman724 -1 points0 points ago

Way to half-quote what I already beat you to...........

[–]Butt_Patties 0 points1 point ago

'Bout tree fiddy?

Haha, but no, sadly, I'm more poor than you'd think.

[–]skyman724 -1 points0 points ago

I need about tree fiddy

I FOUND NESSY

[–]Chulainn 15 points16 points ago

you brilliant cheap-ass cooking savant you. I will try this on Sunday and if I am alive on Monday I will let you know.

[–]Butt_Patties 1 point2 points ago

I remember I actually had a recipe book that had a fruit pizza which would be maybe $6.00 or so, if I can find it I'll let you know.

[–]Chulainn 0 points1 point ago

Not sure just how willing I am to trust recipes from someone named Butt_Patties

[–]Butt_Patties 1 point2 points ago

You... Actually have a pretty valid concern there. I didn't say sliced ass was an ingredient though, hahah.

I'd ask the other guys that tried making it if it's good if I were you.

[–]staite 7 points8 points ago

Double boiler man, double boiler.

[–]Strawcrazyman 1 point2 points ago

Very good advice. Hell, I'm without microwave right now and I reheat most things with a double boiler.

[–]Butt_Patties 0 points1 point ago

To melt down the chips? It may work, you just need plenty of consistent heat.

[–]staite 0 points1 point ago

Double boilers do have consistent heat, they're used for melting chocolate!

[–]Butt_Patties 0 points1 point ago

Awesome! I may have to get one at some point.

[–]staite 0 points1 point ago

Do it, they're so useful, they're good for making caramel too!

[–]Butt_Patties 0 points1 point ago

Oohh, peanut butter and chocolate fudge with caramel mixed in, there's an idea!

Just wish I had the stuff to try it right now, hahah.

[–]staite 0 points1 point ago

Caramel is really easy to make, it's also really easy to burn, so if you plan on making it, watch it carefully.

[–]Butt_Patties 0 points1 point ago

Don't worry, I will. Like a hawk with ADHD.

[–]Someguy46 3 points4 points ago

Whoah Whoah Whoah. $4 for a snack? Hell, I can get by for two days with that. You underestimate the poorness of college students.

[–]silencia 0 points1 point ago

No, $4 for a tray (or two) of snasks

[–]Butt_Patties 0 points1 point ago

It's totally worth it too, tastes great even if it gets a little burnt or there's still chunks.

[–]BaSiiCzxX 3 points4 points ago

i think your forgetting the vanilla extract but other than that seems like a normal fudge recipe. The price might be off because i dont think 1 bag of chips = 3 cups but i might be wrong.

[–]Butt_Patties 0 points1 point ago

Where I go for the chips (Meijer is a good place) there's bags of chips that're anywhere from 2.9 cups to 4.1 cups for around $2.50, depending on if it's generic or name brand.

Also, the vanilla extract I suppose could be used in it, but it's usually fine without.

[–]sheerheartattack 2 points3 points ago

It's not just cost. Access to a stove top (or anything other than a microwave) is a pretty substantial assumption when it comes to college.

[–]Butt_Patties 0 points1 point ago

If all else fails, but a little propane stove like you'd use for camping.

Oh, and be careful. Fire's dangerous.

[–]terry_has_boots 2 points3 points ago

Peanut butter chocolate chips? I have NEVER heard of those in my life. How exactly do they work?

[–]Butt_Patties 1 point2 points ago

I doubt it's as simple as it sounds, but that's what they're marked as. My best guess is hard peanut butter or peanut butter flavoring in some chocolate chips.

[–]terry_has_boots 0 points1 point ago

Hmm. Very odd. Thanks for offering an explanation! :)

[–]Butt_Patties 1 point2 points ago

As best I can, anyways. Any time.

[–]Hellothereawesome 0 points1 point ago

I love people like you.

[–]bionic4life 0 points1 point ago

where is a college student supposed to get a stove? they can barely afford gum.

[–]jlking3 0 points1 point ago

I've seen electric hotplates for as little as $6.95 here in South Florida.

[–]Butt_Patties 0 points1 point ago

Pre-installed if they're lucky, or just save up a bit for a tiny propane stove for like $20.

Edit: Or listen to jlking3, he seems to know his shit.

[–]TeriBird -1 points0 points ago

Are you from Northern California by any chance?

[–]Butt_Patties 0 points1 point ago

Nein. Michigan, mate.

[–]TeriBird 0 points1 point ago

Ah, the 'hella' threw me off. I see it used a lot in NorCal slang, but haven't noticed it anywhere else.

[–]Butt_Patties 0 points1 point ago

I only use it once in a blue moon, to be honest.

[–]endlessamy 0 points1 point ago

I make this every year around christmas time and give a bunch away as gifts. Cheapest and most appreciated gift I have ever given. I like to put M & M's on top when they are cooling.

[–]Butt_Patties 0 points1 point ago

Holy shit nostalgia rush. I loved that movie

[–]Wolfgang_00 1 point2 points ago

[–]CheshireIsBack 27 points28 points ago

[–]laura22lynne 26 points27 points ago

Ain't nobody got time for that!

[–]imboring 10 points11 points ago

[–]Mirple 9 points10 points ago

But redditors would rather complain about how poorly they eat rather than actually doing something about it!

[–]TheDroopy 3 points4 points ago

Yeah really. "I can only afford Ramen" usually really means "I only have the patience to microwave Ramen".

[–]sheerheartattack 2 points3 points ago

With what, the microwave on top of your compact refrigerator? Both of which you had to buy for yourself?

[–]thunderling 0 points1 point ago

Seriously. All I ate when I lived in the dorms was cereal and microwave oatmeal.

[–]im_too_literal 1 point2 points ago

Most dorms I know of have a communal oven kitchen space.

[–]BoringUsername1 36 points37 points ago

College student here. Learn to cook and stop trying to make people feel sorry for you.

[–]Benaker 12 points13 points ago

Yay! Someone who actually understands college life on a budget!

[–]madplayshd 3 points4 points ago

You can cook incredibly good stuff for almost nothing. I pay about 21 EUR per week on food and that can just be as delicious. And this includes chocolate. Look at this 1.80 EUR chicken breast with rice. Plus, if you life in america, meat is way cheaper than in europe.

[–]random19 1 point2 points ago

Bro.

Do you cut your chicken while it's cooking to ensure it's fully cooked?

Don't do that man.

[–]madplayshd 0 points1 point ago

No, it was already done. Also very moist anyway because it was basically finished of in chicken stock.

//EDIT//

Clarification: I am a cheap college student and eat out of the pan.

[–]random19 0 points1 point ago

ah, just asking. I cringe when my brothers do that to check if the food is cooked.

[–]Askalad 1 point2 points ago

College student with literally 0 cooking skills here, why shouldn't one cut the chicken while cooking to check for completeness?

[–]random19 0 points1 point ago

Dries out the meat

[–]Askalad 0 points1 point ago

Thank you for your quick response;

filing this under 'things never to do'.

[–]random19 0 points1 point ago

Takes some time to learn when its cooked, but worth it

[–]CoriJane 0 points1 point ago

All of the juices escape and the meat ends up becoming dry as shit (dry shit that is, and we all know how painful those can be to pass).

While Skyping on his MBP. BEING POOR SUCKS!

[–]zom_bejeesus 0 points1 point ago

Hey... I was gonna say that...

[–]LoyalCassius 6 points7 points ago

Now try being gluten intolerant.

[–]SpikeMF 0 points1 point ago

I have a friend who is intolerant to gluten, soy, corn, dairy and a handful of smaller allergies (nuts, sesame seeds, etc)

Rice. Lots and LOTS of rice...

[–]LoyalCassius 1 point2 points ago

Poor bastard, gluten is one thing, but dairy and corn? Though if he's anything like me he's probably tired of the 'I am so sorry!' 'that sucks!' that he gets whenever he tells anyone.

[–]SpikeMF 0 points1 point ago

For years during high school his dietary restrictions would be brought up in conversation every time we ate with anyone new. He seems to be doing pretty well, though. It helped that his mother had similar restrictions, but when he went off to university he had to be especially cautious. On the plus side, he is an excellent cook as a result of having to prepare all of his meals himself, usually from scratch.

[–]Delto 6 points7 points ago

i have no job, University student, get $169 a week from the government as a student loan, after i put everything into our flat account I'm left with $5 to spend at my leisure. I'm sick to death of Toast, Toast with peanut butter, toast with Marmite/Vegemite, Toast with Jam. It sucks, if i want something to eat and its not dinner time, you betcha' its TOAST TIME!.

When i start feeling sorry for myself like the gif says, it is a bit cliche but I remember that people in Africa are eating Dirt pancakes in order to get rid of that hungry feeling, no nutritional value, just to stop the hunger pains. Then I'm like, FUCK I HATE TOAST, sigh, I think I'm in a jam mood today, nom nom nom nom....Then i remember fuck i hate jam.

[–]blarglznoflo 0 points1 point ago

If it helps, my fiancé and I are saving up for a toaster for our apartment. Your comment made me sad because dammit I miss toast.

[–]knylok 0 points1 point ago

I knew people that had to use the food bank whilst in post secondary. Your situation sounds familiar.

Also, if you're just doing toast and topping, chances are you are missing out on a lot of key nutrients.

[–]szabes 10 points11 points ago

Great movie or greatest movie?

[–]TripsOro 2 points3 points ago

You threw off my groove!

[–]smochaccino 1 point2 points ago

LLAMA FACE!

[–]Arch_Trickster 7 points8 points ago

I was so excited to get out of the dorms so I could make my own food..Then I realized I have no cooking talent. Yay cereal and PB&J!

[–]EnemyCombatant92 -1 points0 points ago

As a current college student, I live off PB&J. But to bad it is dramatically increasing in price:(

[–]TripsOro 7 points8 points ago

I think I'm really lucky that I go to a university with a pretty kickass meal plan... I don't think there's any time where I have to go hungry.

However, I do get rather tired of eating matter, rather than food.

[–]Ozera 1 point2 points ago

All my meal plan is x amount of money on your university ID and a small discount for places to eat on campus. For me, I chose the cheapest plan (530$) and I just hit 515$ish after a whole week. This is what I do to eat:

1 meal a day, 2 if I am having a REALLY bad day or REALLY good one.

This meal includes an item that is under 3.30$ Usually a big slice of pizza or a sammich. To maintain nutrition, I will have at least 1 cup of fruit every now and then as well as a Power Bar like a Cliff Bar (note these bar's are expensive so I usually take these bars as 'donations' to my academic career. I figure since half the shit in my dorm building doesn't work I can get my moneys worth this way).

[–]TripsOro 0 points1 point ago

That blows, dude. Mine is 170 meals for the whole semester, and $300 for use in on-campus restaurants/coffeeshops. 170 meals is 1 meal a day, and 2 about a third of the time... But what I do is I bring my backpack, fill it up with food and drink, and then eat in the dining hall (which is sort of like a buffet/cafeteria).

[–]vancomycin 1 point2 points ago

Just to clarify, you steal power bars?

[–]Ozera 0 points1 point ago

Go away university staff!

[–]Benaker 0 points1 point ago

I just had a peanutbutter and jelly and captain crunch hotdog. Granted it's inspired by Tubby Dogs in Calgary, but it's an awesome, unique idea. Make it yourself or for a lady friend and your gonna have a good time.

[–]yeawhateva14 5 points6 points ago

Then I go back to eating my ramen and cheese whiz

[–]DieHard4192 3 points4 points ago

I had ramen with cut up pieces of slim jim in it today. Surprisingly not that bad.

[–]pineconeboy 0 points1 point ago

I go nuts with my Ramen. First of all, only the best variety will do. To this I add vinegar, hot sauce, and an egg.

Practically a restaurant meal. :D

[–]PenguinPowaaa 2 points3 points ago

Get a can of Black Beans, should be around a dollar, and a can of diced tomatoes, similar price. Get a can of coconut milk, this is the "spendy" part, $2.50-ish.

Combine the black beans, diced tomatoes, and half the can of coconut mild. Add salt, pepper, and if you want vegetables, some frozen peas. Cook until hot or peas are done.

So, 2 can black beans + 2 cans tomatoe + 1 can of coconut milk = about $5.50, approximately 4 servings, super good. It really does taste great, and only $1.30-1.80 per serving. I only put about 1/3rd of the can of coconut in, otherwise it can be too creamy, so it's even cheaper that way. Add about $.30 a serving with peas.

And if you do raman, you can add that. Early for noodles, late for crunch!

[–]curisma11 2 points3 points ago

Get a job at a restaurant while going to school. You will not regret it.

[–]Sohcahtoa82 2 points3 points ago

I'm a full-time college student working, working part time. Today, for dinner, I cooked ribeye steak, bacon-wrapped scallops, home-made cheddar bay biscuits, and broccoli with cheese for my girlfriend and I.

...and there's a reason I'm only in my third year and have about $26,000 in student loan debt already.

[–]SweGamer 2 points3 points ago

[–]HighSorcerer 2 points3 points ago

1 box mac and cheese 1 can no-beans chili 1 package bacon, crumbled

cook and combine ingredients, eat and feel better on the cheap.

[–]carrotman424 2 points3 points ago

I like it with beans!

[–]HighSorcerer 2 points3 points ago

Then get it with beans, like I'm going to be able to stop you. ;)

[–]TheFluxIsThis 3 points4 points ago

Holy shit. Nothing about this sounds non-delicious.

[–]HighSorcerer -1 points0 points ago

It's the most comforting man-style comfort food I could come up with. If you're feeding more than two people, use two boxes mac and cheese. It makes a pretty hefty quantity.

[–]Kalashnikov74 2 points3 points ago

I gained so much weight as an undergrad on macncheese and hamburger helper. Ate that crap almost every day. Easy to make, but terrible for you.

[–]HighSorcerer 0 points1 point ago

Try the stuff above, find out how it sticks to your insides. It's amazing, but so terrible for your health, yes.

[–]shabutaru118 0 points1 point ago

I love combining mac and cheese with cut up hot dogs.

[–]MilitaryBees 0 points1 point ago

That sounds like something I would have concocted. Why the hell have I never tried this? Ha.

[–]jayelwhitedear -1 points0 points ago

What cartoon is this gif from, please?

Edit: Never mind, I remembered!

[–]Domaurefilla 0 points1 point ago

I've never understood that sub-Reddit; if you go in there to purposely beg for a pizza, and then someone decides to buy you one. . .how is that random?

[–]Goshey 0 points1 point ago

it really isn't, i think it's just a name. probably refers to the fact that someone is buying a pizza for someone they don't know.

[–]Raffles_Dad 0 points1 point ago

Can I suggest you try and get a copy of Student Grub by Alastair Williams or the best alternative for your region of the world. It should be on the books list for any first year course.

[–]TBfive2 0 points1 point ago

1000x this

[–]doitforslippy 0 points1 point ago

If you're in the dorms and have a coffee pot, you can make delicious pasta. Buy a bag of dry pasta (whatever kind you want), put it in the pot and run water thru about three times. Put a jar of pasta sauce in the microwave for about two minutes and pour over your now "boiled" pasta. If you want to get super fancy, get some Parmesan for the main dish and some pre-cooked garlic bread for a side.

[–]lakk 0 points1 point ago

As a freshman, good food is hard to come by. But by the time you're an upperclassmen, you realize that you should cook your own shit not because it's fun but it's more tasty. Plus, you learn how to cook your own food and not stare blankly at meat at the market saying "What the fuck do I do with this?"

[–]polarbeargarden 1 point2 points ago

It's surprisingly cheap to make good food. Especially if you have friends who will shop and eat with you. poorstudentscookbook.com is a good starting point.

Things I've learned by learning to be good at cooking:

  • Frozen chicken is cheap and very versatile
  • Olive oil is wonderful, and the cheap kind is just fine
  • Buy a variety of spices, they last forever and make everything better
  • Rice is cheap and complements many meals. As does pasta.
  • Fish can be really cheap in grocery stores. Especially tilapia.
  • Being able to cook well is an important skill
  • Pay attention to per-meal costs, learn to keep that shit low

[–]Narroo 1 point2 points ago

That said, there is a point where you can't even afford that. Some crummy stuff over the summer happened to me, and I had something like $50 to last a few weeks. Gwently Hotdogs + Baked Fries. Cost something like less than a buck per meal~ (Hotdogs 6 cents an ounce, bread is also dirt cheap, fries like 8 cents an ounce.)

[–]518nig -1 points0 points ago

You can cook nice good when you're a student, you just need to use your imaginationnnnnnn.

Before next semester, get your parents, or scrape and save to get yourself a proper spice collection.

It can turn lead into gold my friend.

Toast with cheese on top with pepper and a dash of salt and garlic? Welcome to royalty.

Would you like some cheese with that whine?

I made this last night and it was very inexpensive. Rice, nori (the seaweed sheets), and whatever fillings you want are the only ingredients and they're pretty cheap. The only thing that would get expensive is if you wanted to use fish/real crab. Otherwise it's like 1-2 bucks per roll.

How I feel being allergic to wheat every day of my life! Sucks even more becaue I was diagnosed so late in life and I still know what everything tastes like

[–]Ibroke 0 points1 point ago

You'll feel that way after you graduate too.

[–]chillale66 0 points1 point ago

Shut the fuck up, you're the one who chose to by "chron" with your weekly allowance from mom and dad instead of food.

There's pretty much no end to what you can do with ramen. Here's a free ramen cookbook for kindle to give you some ideas.

Same goes for mac and cheese. You're only limited by your imagination.

[–]blarglznoflo 2 points3 points ago

I got excited, because I've eaten so much ramen lately. But that book is 4 bucks...no deliciousness for me.

[–]rprebel 1 point2 points ago

Oops. It was free last night. Oh well, it's not like there's a shortage of ramen recipes on the internet.

[–]blarglznoflo 1 point2 points ago

I know. You did inspire me to start looking them up. This thread just hit home for me so hard.

[–]iDownvoteAndroid 0 points1 point ago

Ramen? More like sodium.

[–]serrit -2 points-1 points ago

Because being in college excludes you from eating tasty foods.

[–]kerradeph 0 points1 point ago

yeah, for me, it's kind of like "well, I could make that, or I could have about a weeks worth of food... worth it."

[–]Mirple 2 points3 points ago

You can make plenty of good food for cheap. You just have to make it yourself.

[–]rabidkillercow -2 points-1 points ago

Work two jobs while going to college full time. Eat awesome food all the time. It's not that hard!

Are American college students that poor or on a diet or something?

The picture is hyperbola, but a lot of kids feel that way.

It varies so this isn't everyone's story. A lot of kids when they were living at home had access to copious amounts of free food and didn't have to pay rent or utilities. They got to regularly eat nice meals because their parents were established in their careers and had been doing them for 10+ years.

The kids go off to college and it is the first time they get to experience the large difference in what they make and what their money actually buys. The kids are usually making minimum wage, working part-time while paying for their books, rent, food and utilities. They might also be living off(instead of working) a tiny stipend from their parents or student loans. Depending on their living status and number of roommates, it's not untypically for 70%+ of their income to be going towards rent. What's left over can be extremely small: $10-20 a week after bills. They can only afford some unhealthy combination like ramein, cereal, and mac and cheese for several months at a time. That's not the whole story.

In the US, food is something we've never put as much emphasis on like Europe. Food comes out of what is left over. This already spartan budget is usually where people steal funds from to buy treats like alcohol or stuff they can't live without. They make the situation worse by telling themselves, "I'll just eat ramein a couple of times each week instead of real food to save money." It's not uncommon to find kids that have replaced dinner for a month with ramein because they wanted to be able to afford whatever was important to them at that time. Some kids do it during the semesters and then you have the life time academic people that do it for several years. Some kids live off that ramein, mac and cheese, and frozen burrito diet their entire time in undergrad and even through grad school. That's a portion of the kids that could afford better then $10-20/week, but choose not to.

td;lr Education is extremely expensive and the jobs that are available to kids pay just enough to sustain themselves. Not all kids have to live that poor, but a large number do it themselves.

As a college student who goes to the university ranked #1 in Canada in terms of on-campus food, I feel good when I see food posts. Especially because I can probably get even more delicious food on campus. Damn now i'm excited to go back to school next week.
