Bavaria always had to be "different." During German Unification in 1870/71, Bavaria was being a complete diva about absolutely everything. Overall, Bavaria always struck me as a mixture of equal parts Germany and Austria, that is unhappy about being both, and unhappy about being neither of the two. To use the age-old comparison, Bavaria really is Germany's Texas. I absolutely love Munich, though. Fantastic city.

As a Texan transplanted to North Rhine, that comparison tickles me. Heavily catholic, lots of farms, funny accents, and not-quite The South proper. Very fitting!

One of the reasons why many stereotypes about germans are from bavaria, at least for the US, is that the most US-troops were stationed in bavaria after WWII.

They were never willing to fully integrate into the Federal Republic. Their politics and demographics are very different from the rest of Germany, and if they had the chance, they would probably go fully independent.

Well...maybe I'm underestimating the rednecks, but they have this reputation of being stupid. I wouldn't say that about Bavarians, they are just very different from most of the rest of Germany. They also don't see themselves as being a "real" part of Germany. When the representatives from each state voted on the constitution (Grundgesetz) in 1949, Bavaria voted against it.

Anyway, it's also hard for Germans to see that our picture in the world consists of Lederhosen, Oktoberfest and BMW, when all these things are just Bavaria.
