A few seconds ago...

[–]FlyingPasta 32 points33 points ago

And I am 99% sure it's the same picture beneath.

[–]ThatIsMyHat 2 points3 points ago

You can only see to top few pixels, but I think they are the same.

[–]FlyingPasta 3 points4 points ago

Top few rows. But yeah, the dark/light pattern definitely suggest a very close match.

[–]loganparker420 1 point2 points ago

That is the photo that appears next to the box you type your comment into. It's supposed to be his photo.

[–]FlyingPasta 0 points1 point ago

That's why I mentioned it.

[–]OnceAndFutureThing 4 points5 points ago

Hit and run atheist.

[–]loganparker420 1 point2 points ago

It would've most likely been deleted had he waited for a response. 99% of my comments about religion on facebook are deleted without response.

[–]DeadShift03 37 points38 points ago

This is funny?

[–]MachShot 24 points25 points ago

You need to understand that no less than 20% of /r/atheism is essentially like this.

[–]unrecognizedtruth 6 points7 points ago

20% is pretty generous.

edit: er, lenient, low, etc.

[–]smorf_cat 1 point2 points ago

That video was preceded by a 4-minute ad for Being A Mormon Person.

[–]MachShot -1 points0 points ago

Not using Ad Block Plus on YouTube?

[–]iRideDragons 0 points1 point ago

20%? Seems more like the majority are in favour of the kid in the photo, while there's the few in the comments that don't like it. I'd say 70%.

[–]TrepanationBy45 4 points5 points ago

I'm glad I'm not the only one that points out how shitty these front page-makers are getting.

[–]ChocolateHead 7 points8 points ago

there was a thread 2 days ago on r/atheism with atheists laughing at an atheist dumping a bottle of water on a crazy woman yelling about jesus. So, yeah, not the most highbrow humor lovers here.

[–]Corrinth 12 points13 points ago

But that was funny, because it was a baptism joke.

[–]another_mouse 4 points5 points ago

In any other context Reddit would have a gay old time getting uppity about how the mentally ill shouldn't be abused under any circumstance.

[–]Corrinth 3 points4 points ago

Well, of course. But when I read the joke, I didn't get the impression that she was actually mentally ill.

[–]Aitamen 0 points1 point ago

Didn't they say she was crazy and yelling about jesus?

Thought the crazy was understood there <__<

[–]Corrinth 1 point2 points ago

Crazy doesn't always mean mentally ill. I know a lot of people who act crazy but who, clinically speaking, are sane.

[–]Aitamen 0 points1 point ago

Considering that mental illness/disability has a cultural portion, I'd readily argue that someone who bears any kind of faith or was otherwise subjected to authoritarian rulings generally have decreased IQ, and thus could be marked as relatively retarded (as a comparative term), thus bearing a mental illness...

But I'm a cynic... and the left-eyes mean that I'm being facetious, for reference.

[–]g3n3p4rm3s4n -1 points0 points ago

saying the reddit userbase sucks isn't an excuse to be a moralfag

[–]smorf_cat 0 points1 point ago

I think there's a philosoraptor moment to be had here from the fact that many /r/atheists would seriously argue that religion should literally be classified as a mental illness.

[–]g3n3p4rm3s4n 0 points1 point ago

It's a lot funnier than saying rape is stock language fwiw.

[–]ChocolateHead 21 points22 points ago

Douche patrol

[–]raptosaurus 7 points8 points ago

Nah it was probably A Song of Ice and Fire

[–]Snow88 0 points1 point ago

I've never wanted to murder a fictional character before. I didn't know where to direct my anger.

[–]ThatIsMyHat 0 points1 point ago

Video games. That's basically all they are.

[–]93Luke 68 points69 points ago

Nothing to see here, just some pubescent middle-class brat who thinks he's smarter than everyone else because he thinks God isn't real.

Edit: I was probably too presumptuous of the context of the screen capture. Still, I think people should mind their own business and keep their beliefs to themselves.

[–]falcy 14 points15 points ago

In my fantasy Jade is an open minded atheists and wants to learn more about religions, so she is trying to read the Bible, but keeps getting frustrated.

[–]TheDobber 2 points3 points ago

As a Christian here, this actually sounds like a good read.

[–]ThatIsMyHat 4 points5 points ago

I can see why that might appeal to the /r/atheism demographic.

[–]chucktownginger 2 points3 points ago

Wait, what the fuck are you talking about? God isn't real? You crazy guy, next thing you'll post is that unicorns are extinct.

[–]93Luke 5 points6 points ago

I didn't say God wasn't real. I was pointing out that the guy disingenuously told the girl in the image that The Bible is false, or that God doesn't exist, for no actual reason other than to try to offend someone who simply chose to post a very non-threatening and decent message on Facebook.

[–]Fairchild660 1 point2 points ago

Or, maybe Jade's an atheist and it was a lighthearted joke.

[–]jamesandlily_forever 0 points1 point ago

Random question, but is your username a reference to the MI series?

[–]Fairchild660 0 points1 point ago

My username is the make and model of a piece of audio equipment from the 1950s. Although rare (and incredibly expencive), they're still used in recording studios today.

[–]jamesandlily_forever 1 point2 points ago

Oh wow! Very cool.

[–]loganparker420 1 point2 points ago

It's only a joke.

[–]ColrathD -2 points-1 points ago

Because he knows

[–]93Luke 8 points9 points ago

He knows there's no god in the same way that the girl "knows" there is a god. Either way you need to presume that you are right even without actual proof of your beliefs. I'm not saying that belief in the Christian God and belief that He isn't real are equally valid or true, just that thinking you know the truth and that you must dutifully show everybody else the light is the kind of attitude a lot of religious people have and is ironic in people who consider themselves to be "free thinkers".

[–]rtahyo -2 points-1 points ago

Really... Your not serous, are you? Seeing how they are friends on facebook they have repor between each other. Your knee jerk reaction to assume the individual is attacking religion or anything is astounding and you should go watch Fox news rather than litter the internet with your ignorant thoughtless babble. On the hope that you are just trolling, Good Job. Otherwise consider a getting getting a early vesectimy so we don't have to deal with your future brain washed kids.

[–]93Luke 0 points1 point ago

Considering how common it is to find screencaps of Facebook dialogues where a Christian is rebuked for saying "God bless" or something on reddit it seemed like Jade was being made fun of by a guy who thought he would go out of his way to insult her religion. Also, I don't really see any way that my posts are "thoughtless babble" because my point has only been to remind so-called atheists on reddit that they don't have an obligation to imitate the zealots and evangelists everyone here seems to detest. It's not exactly free thought if atheists just freak out about every puny reference to God or Jesus.

By the way, if I am trolling, I'm doing a poor job of it because I have been upvoted on all of my comments so far (apparently someone agrees with me).

[–]rtahyo 0 points1 point ago

You are serous. It is your freedom of speech but you should take your lectures of fire and brimstone elsewhere. You are living up to the hateful stance that religions have been endowed. "To each their own", "do as I say not as I do", etc are values that are often discounted and frequently ignored. Humanity reguardless of religious faith, sect, or lack of religion is on an increasingly disturbing trend to interfere, to the point of murder, in simple matters and portray their individual beliefs as common law then enforce them on others. This facebook post is a simple joke, that you took as a means to stand on your alter and banter on about Jesus and God with the subversive attempt to interfere. The Media is to blame and you should learn from their mistakes.

[–]93Luke -1 points0 points ago

I am not a Christian, if you thought I was. I'm also not taking sides. The only idea that I'm trying to get across in this thread is that atheists like James in the image, presuming that he is an atheist and Jade is a Christian, are hypocrites because in their attempts to let everyone know that they choose not to believe in a creator they are basically brandishing their belief system (or absence of belief, whatever) in the same way that Christians and Muslims do.

[–]WalrusTits 1 point2 points ago

[–]93Luke 0 points1 point ago

Point taken.

[–]rhubarbs 1 point2 points ago

Still, I think people should mind their own business and keep their beliefs to themselves.

No, they shouldn't.

If someone believes they can fly, you are morally obligated to point out they have no reason to think they can fly, and to stop them from jumping off a building despite being unable to know with absolute certainty whether or not they'll be able to fly.

To call for a moratorium on religious discussion just because religion is based on popular and socially accepted delusions is both naive and irresponsible.

[–]scottmelvin 1 point2 points ago

Except the belief in God doesn't hurt anyone. except obviously when people abuse it to try and take away other people's rights.

If somebody posts a non-aggressive, non-provocative, post on facebook, you are NOT morally obligated to say "HAHA NOOB! GOD ISN'T REAL!"

If, however, somebody posts a comment saying gays shouldn't get married, abortion shouldn't be legal, or you are not moral for not believing, then by all means, knock yourself out.

[–]rhubarbs 1 point2 points ago

Believing you can fly doesn't hurt anyone either... until you jump off a building. But both beliefs do create a strong disposition towards a scenario where someone gets hurt.

And no, of course you're not morally obligated to act like a douchebag.

But if someone posts a non-aggressive, non-provocative post on facebook you can, and should, make a similarly non-aggressive and non-provocative response, stating what you think. If anything, it is obnoxious and hypocritical for one person to share their religious views while maintaining that any dissent in the form of civil criticism is taboo, especially since the act of inviting others to receive your communications is implicitly soliciting it.

[–]scottmelvin 0 points1 point ago

Except there it isn't obnoxious to say God bless this day. It is obnoxious to respond with God isn't real. That is provocative, because you're just trying to stir the pot. r/atheism is a perfect forum for debate. facebook is a perfect forum for posting your excitement for a beautiful day.

If somebody tries to that to me over facebook, I defriend them, simple as that. If somebody tries to do that in person, I'm up for an open discussion.

It's like saying happy birthday over facebook. You don't get points for trying... except for karma, evidently.

[–]rhubarbs 0 points1 point ago

Except there it isn't obnoxious to say God bless this day. It is obnoxious to respond with God isn't real. That is provocative, because you're just trying to stir the pot. r/atheism is a perfect forum for debate.

What makes you think that saying "God bless this day" isn't trying to stir the pot, and "God isn't real" is? You have no way of knowing what the intent of the author is, you're just superimposing the intent you need that statement to rest on, in order to justify condemnation.

But hey, I can do that too; saying "God bless this day" is clearly a malicious attempt at promoting religious beliefs under the pretense of "excitement for a beautiful day", not only obnoxious, but extremely insulting to the intelligence of anyone they may hope to deceive.

[–]scottmelvin 0 points1 point ago

I've been on the internet long enough to know that a response of "God isn't real" is not a friendly response at all. Except to other atheists I suppose. "Mornin' Tim, God isn't real" "And a fine God isn't real to you too John." Christians can be kind of aloof as to the sensitivity of others, but most of the ones I've seen on Facebook are not meant to stir the pot. How do I know? Because I know these people. They're not pot stirrers.

So when I see a post from my friend saying that God has graced her (then) upcoming wedding day with good weather, and I see that someone actually responded with "I suppose God was too busy diverting rain clouds to feed starving children," It's pretty clear what the intentions are.

[–]WestenM 4 points5 points ago

Poor girl was probably reading a Storm of Swords.

[–]redcthulhu 10 points11 points ago

...You guys realize that this isn't OP's FB post, right? He saw something on /r/ImGoingToHellForThis and X-posted it (without noting so in the title). Put yer pitchforks away.

[–]weemoar 39 points40 points ago

haha post your own comment on reddit. fuckin faggot

[–]ChocolateHead 9 points10 points ago

well that's why he made the comment in the first place; it's not like he was going to convince that girl of anything.

[–]ColrathD 5 points6 points ago

Didn't know we condoned nsfw language or putting others down so rudely.

Interesting.

[–]g3n3p4rm3s4n -3 points-2 points ago

whose 'we'

you think this website is a community or something?

[–]ColrathD 0 points1 point ago

I guess I remember a different /r/atheism, my bad.

[–]iRideDragons 2 points3 points ago

Haha, I'm sorry but since when was this sub ever against putting people down? This picture itself is taking something a large group of people believe as fact (true or not) and blatantly calling it fiction. It has almost 1500 upvotes and its completely demoralizing. Where's the not putting others down?

[–]addboy -2 points-1 points ago

"faggot"? Don't lower yourself, you sound like a Christian.

[–]malevolentduality 20 points21 points ago

So brave.

[–]Reshvj 3 points4 points ago

This isn't quite what /r/atheism is for.

You're not making any point about atheism or religion or anything related to it. You're not even pointing out the 'stupidity' of Christians. You're upvoting a random douche who makes an insensitive comment on a post that has nothing to do with religion.

Good job /r/atheism. Not only are you encouraging the worst type of Internet Atheist, you ARE the worst type of Internet Atheist.

Unsubscribed.

[–]93Luke -1 points0 points ago

Exactly, he just told some person minding her own business that her holy book is fake, or somehow wrong. I could say that On the Origin of Species is wrong but that's just an assertion without any sort of backing-up, like James' comment.

[–]Davedz 14 points15 points ago

Your comment + profile picture makes you out to be a massive twat, you know that right?

[–]ColrathD 2 points3 points ago

More jumping on people and putting them down the further I read this thread. Did I miss something? What happened to just down-voting and moving on? I thought everyone was so exited because the children were going back to school.

Now we have this trash?

[–]JCXtreme -3 points-2 points ago

Read the title to this post.

[–]Davedz 6 points7 points ago

Would people really lie on the internet?.tiff

[–]NancyTheGrimm 6 points7 points ago

Its

> saw this on r/imgoingtohellforthis...

Meaning it's a x-post. OP is not claiming the fb screenshot to be his...

[–]superhappytrail -3 points-2 points ago

Either way, he's still reposting something stupid, so he deserves his scorn

Incidentally, my first foray into that subreddit. Good lord. Isn't there an actual racist subreddit those people can visit?

Are you kidding me? I posted this here and got like 5 upvotes.

[–]Major_woody4591 -1 points0 points ago

up vote for making me chuckle

[–]Geofly 1 point2 points ago

People should remember that r/atheism is for all aspects of atheism, not just the nice and respectful ones.

After all I doubt it would become a default Reddit if it was full of meaningful discussion, that would be too boring for the internetperson on the go.

[–]kgraham76 0 points1 point ago

Vague statuses should be date raped and set on fire. Although, Comment Blocking Level = Expert

[–]Pantzzzzless 1 point2 points ago

Shit like this really gets upvoted? Like we really need to see anymore of this pissing match bullshit on here? Fuck you, fuck your mother, and fuck everyone you know.

[–]NoMomo 0 points1 point ago

1352 points.

[–]Chris1218218 1 point2 points ago

Ah yes. A conversation between two white teenagers.

/r/atheism in a nutshell.

[–]Grindstone50k -3 points-2 points ago

I read that book. It's terrible.

[–]RageQZBass[S] -3 points-2 points ago

I would like to clarify for those who are to lazy to read the title of this post: it is not my picture, it is not my Facebook (I don't even have a Facebook), I don't know the people in the picture. I clearly stated that I "saw this on /r/imgoingtohellforthis" and do not take credit for the picture. I just thought that it belonged here and would be appreciated by you guys.

[–]TrepanationBy45 3 points4 points ago

Your ideas are bad and you should feel bad.

I HATE WHEN RELIGIOUS PEOPLE COME TO MY DOOR OCCASIONALLY AND TRY TO CONVINCE ME TO JOIN THEIR CULT AND WORSHIP SUPERNATURAL ATMOSPHERE CREATURES, THEY ALWAYS TRY TO SHOVE THEIR RELIGION DOWN MY THROAT!!! ALSO DAE OBLIGATED TO ATTACK PEOPLE'S BELIEFS FOR NO GOOD REASON?

[–]cumfarts -4 points-3 points ago

nothing to do with atheism
