Wow 50% more on trade ins? I'm glad they're putting lipstick on before they FUCK ME.

[–]jin357[S] 149 points150 points ago

I've heard that if you preorder a few games, they lube up first. Now that is customer service.

EDIT: Apparently /u/8bitid found and posted this interesting tid bit before I did. If you feel like being awesome, run over there and drop him a vote :D

[–]scullyismyhomegirl 5 points6 points ago

You are lovely!

[–]jin357[S] 12 points13 points ago

Why, thank you!

PS: You're lovely-er!

[–]8bitid 1 point2 points ago

Thanks for the mention. It is a pretty clever use of tables and sliced images.

[–]schwertfeger 7 points8 points ago

  1. Go into Gamestop, buy a brand new game
  2. Walk outside and unwrap it
  3. Walk back in and trade it in for 50% more trade in value
  4. Profit?

[–]sydneygamer 0 points1 point ago

Profit? Piss away 20 dollars.

FTFY

[–]RileyFX 2 points3 points ago

Sometimes for REALLY NEW games they trade in price is around $30 so it might work. But more than likely in the fine print they mention the %50 more doesn't apply to newly released games.

[–]AwesomeMcPants 1 point2 points ago

Yes it does.

[–]thevideoclown 17 points18 points ago

Now I can trade my copy of Persona 4 Arena for $3!

[–]myentusername 8 points9 points ago

If you hurry now, you can trade in your copy of Sleeping Dogs for $35!

[–]Cam8895 10 points11 points ago

What do they get Aaron? Uh absolutely 9 dollars!

[–]tgarnett 9 points10 points ago

That commercial always bugged me, because getting $9 from a GameStop tradein is unheard of.

[–]Cam8895 2 points3 points ago

Yeah I hate gamestop. I am a pro member and I went in to buy a 160 gb PS3 recently, I expected to get 10% off but that doesn't apply to consoles, I would've had to pay 275 for it, so I went on amazon and got a new one for 230. Better deals online..

And selling I agree, I sold my DS lite and all games because I needed some quick credit and some games came up at $0.75...really? I sold it back to them so I basically rented for full price and they give me back 75 cents, which theyll then sell for $5. How much profit do you need? They really have fucked me over a lot because I am a sucker...Also I bought NBA 2k10 for wii at $40 new (worst decision ever) I returned it with receipt about 2 days later and they offer me...$12, I get that now you have to sell it as used (only 5 bucks less) but that's insulting...

/rant

[–]ghengisjohn16 4 points5 points ago

Dude some games just don't sell and aren't worth anything. I traded in my new super mario bros game for like 15 bucks because its a good game that sells fast. Most ds games are shit and don't sell. Plus maybe think about it before buying a game, I never understand people who buy a game without looking into it and just returning it two days later. Most places don't even have a return policy gamestops is actually super leniant for pre owned games anyway.

[–]Cam8895 -2 points-1 points ago

too bad that is BS considering they're going to sell my games for like 500% profit. Seeing as how I bought it from them, I basically just gave them my money when I returned it. I pay $40, then if I chose to return it for $12 that means I just gave them $28 for essentially a rental. Then they go sell the same game again for $30-$35. Pre-owned games are one thing, I am talking about new games, the game I bought was new.

[–]GravityBlasteroid 1 point2 points ago

Poor you, a company actually has a decent business model. Go shop at Walmart, where they don't even know shit about games in the first place, let alone accept trade ins.

[–]Cam8895 -3 points-2 points ago

Haha am I not allowed to dislike a company? Sorry if you are a gamestop employee or fanboy, I just don't like them.

[–]HazzyPls 1 point2 points ago

Wait, seriously? I bought mine for about that.

[–]myentusername 1 point2 points ago

No idea, I just know it's a new game and probably costs $60

[–]AttemptedBirdhouse1 0 points1 point ago

Why the hell would you trade your copy of Persona 4 Arena? Heathen!

[–]mdsakglmlk 0 points1 point ago

Probably because he's finished it. Not any replay value if you don't like the multiplayer.

I can't fathom why you wouldn't like the multiplayer, though. It's a good fighting game, and having Persona characters just makes it better.

[–]SEGnosis 17 points18 points ago

I'm sorrwy mommy I didn't know that was a no-no word...

[–]Beanbaker 1 point2 points ago

You have to be kidding me. I know we all want/love to hate Gamestop, but their trade in value is pretty sweet. And it's not useless. Getting Steam giftcards is awesome. I traded in Portal 2 and got $30. That's pretty fucking sweet.

Also, I had bought a used copy of RE5 from Play N Trade for around $5 and sold it to Gamestop for $15. I actually think you could buy used games and resell them to Gamestop for a profit.

So, now they give an extra 50%. That's insane. They're just bathing you in money. I went there expecting some really shitty trade-in values when selling my Xbox 360 games and came out with a $50 steam card and $18 of store credit (which I later added money to, in order to get a $20 card).

In short, I adore Gamestop for their trade-in prices and steam gift cards. I have no other experience with them, so I can't really give you a review of their service.

Side note: So what if the employees bug you with offers and shit. I like to know if they have a special, and I won't get ear cancer from hearing about NFL 2014.

[–]Dude_Im_Godly 6 points7 points ago

. I actually think you could buy used games and resell them to Gamestop for a pro

You can. Its called flipping and will end with you being blacklisted by gamestop.

[–]Kibekt 2 points3 points ago

How would they catch you?

[–]Dude_Im_Godly 4 points5 points ago

Volume. Most people doing it have PUR account, the account records all your trades purchases etc. For points. Reach a number they don't like and they blacklist you from doing trades and online purchases.

Tl;Dr paper trail.

[–]theatomicpun[!] 0 points1 point ago

They will only do this if you constantly trade for cash. If you get store credit they won't do any such thing.

[–]Kibekt 0 points1 point ago

[–]hopstar 0 points1 point ago

You have to sign up for their membership club in order to get the bonus on trade-ins.

[–]Kibekt 0 points1 point ago

ah

[–]Beanbaker 1 point2 points ago

Wow. I didn't think Gamestop took measures against that. Good thing to know.

[–]ghengisjohn16 1 point2 points ago

Because they don't. I work at one and a guy does this all the time, goes to yardsales and flea markets and shit and gets cash. We couldn't care less. We just keep track of people who suspiciously trade in bunches of new, never been used controllers and stuff like that because it's pretty obvious they are stolen.

[–]HeyGirlsItsPete 0 points1 point ago

I never really got what was so bad about the trade in value you're getting. For example, cars depreciate their value a whole lot faster and people don't freak out about selling a car a few years old for a quarter of its original value.

If I buy a game for $60, enjoy it for a few months, and trade it in for $10, it's not a bad deal. This only sucks for people who stockpile games, but I only really hold onto the ones I like the most and will definitely replay, not just an impulse buy or something I don't like that much. Video games are expensive and a luxury so I like to get cash for them in any ways I can.

[–]myentusername -1 points0 points ago

Gamestop sucks cause they rip everyone off. You sell a game for $30, they turn around and sell your used copy for $55 while the new game is still $60. They make huge profits doing nothing but reselling the stuff you probably bought from them to begin with, which they made a profit from as well. So while they're raking in billions, you get to save $5 on a game (and get a used copy) and sell all your old games for a fraction of the price. The argument with the car just doesn't work as well here. Used cars are inherently cheaper cause of mechanical issues... cars only have a lifespan of so many miles. But the game you bought 6 years ago is the exact same game today.

[–]HeyGirlsItsPete 0 points1 point ago

I like to think that the value of a video game is dependent on how much you like the game. Think about it. If you think Halo 3 is the best game ever, and I hate it, to whom does the game have more intrinsic value?

So if I beat a game and play it to the point where there is no longer anything to do in the game that I can enjoy, the game doesn't have any real value to me. I don't always replay every game and if the game doesn't give a compelling reason to return, I'll just buy another. There are too many new games coming out for me to stockpile.

Anyway, so if I beat a game and no longer have any intentions of playing it, what's its value to me? It is no longer practical to hold on and it gets to the point where I would rather make ten dollars than hold onto this disc. Once again some people view games as stuff to collect or whatever so they are different. But I like it in purely economic terms.

[–]TanikaTubman 1 point2 points ago

Best Buy not only offers more per game, but currently has a 100% bonus promotion. Just saying.

No, but it is an ad and that ad is a submission and we've been exposed to the ad. Job done.

[–]jasontimmur 23 points24 points ago

I have never seen any subreddit go so completely beyond it's founder's intentions so quickly as /r/mildlyinteresting.

[–]LockjawTheOgre 48 points49 points ago

I work in email marketing, and that is genius. I've had many customers ask me, "what happens if they block images?" My response is to plan for it. That, though, is planning far beyond my expectations.

[–]IAmAQuantumMechanic 25 points26 points ago

When I get marketing emails, I try to unsubscribe. If that doesn't work, I report them for spam and set up a filter that sends their emails straight to the garbage folder.

[–]LockjawTheOgre 16 points17 points ago

If it's being handled by a reputable email marketing provider like JangoMail, iContact, Bronto, Constant Contact, Emma, etc. then an unsubscribe should be very easy. If you get unsolicited email from a customer of a reputable company, forward the email to abuse@ for the domain of the provider.

The great thing about these companies is that they have a reputation to maintain. If they find a customer spamming people, they want to get rid of that customer. I personally stop a LOT of spammers from using our service, and those are the minority that made it past our more automated processes. Some we stop after-the-fact, but that is a very small number compared to how many try, and fail, to use our service.

[–]haste75 2 points3 points ago

As an email marketer, I know that I would never had this idea on my own. Ugh.

[–]DarkLord7854 0 points1 point ago

Not sure what clients you have to test for, but I can imagine that if I had to make sure that showed up correctly in outlook 03-7, lotus notes, gmail, mobile devices, etc, I'd murder my project manager after having to do 2 or 3 of these emails..

[–]heyzuess -1 points0 points ago

It's just tables, and inline styles, so that would show up the same in every browser/client since netscape.

[–]DarkLord7854 0 points1 point ago

You'd think so, but it doesn't. Outlook 07 and later use MS Word as a HTML render engine, and if you're not extremely strict with the way you write the tables and styles, it goes completely haywire. Also Lotus Notes likes to do weird things with spacing.

It's Fun. I'm glad I stopped doing email newsletters a few years ago, so not worth the money.

[–]LockjawTheOgre 0 points1 point ago

It's not quite that bad. There are a few basic compatibility rules you follow. The general rule is, make it work in Outlook, and don't break it in Gmail in the process. Ignore Lotus Notes because those people already know nothing comes in looking right.

[–]DarkLord7854 0 points1 point ago

Lucky, when I used to do email newsletter a few years ago, it was required we do the following pixel perfect: Outlook 03-10, Lotus Notes 6-8, GMail IE & Firefox (OSX & Windows), AOL Mail, Yahoo Mail, Android, iOS, iPad, Apple Mail 4 & 5, and Thunderbird. Much hair was lost until I created a set of templates that were pretty much bulletproof after countless hours of testing.

[–]pokepoke 0 points1 point ago

I do some of that too!

My job - now with 8,000% more tables.

[–]Bazil4385 21 points22 points ago

[–]jin357[S] 9 points10 points ago

[–]Bazil4385 6 points7 points ago

Shit happens bro. I've been in this sub since it's inception and seen some pretty mild things. And maybe /r/funny is just getting less interesting and more mild overall.

[–]jin357[S] 6 points7 points ago

Yeah, maybe we should have /r/interesting for things that are interesting, but not so mild. /r/calienteinteresting. Get it? No? Ok...

[–]Bazil4385 4 points5 points ago

Do it man! Ill sub/mod /r/calienteinteresting. Incidentally, /r/interesting is far less interesting than this /r/.

[–]jin357[S] 4 points5 points ago

/r/interesting is really boring, and /r/calienteinteresting doesn't exactly roll off the tongue. Any other ideas?

[–]Bazil4385 6 points7 points ago

[–]jin357[S] 0 points1 point ago

[–]Anaphase 18 points19 points ago

"Please help me, they have me locked in this dark basement coding their marketing emails!"

[–]thisusernameismeta 2 points3 points ago

It took me until this comment to actually figure out what the clever work around was.

[–]Fopenplop 5 points6 points ago

Why is it necessary for email clients to block pictures? Is there some fundamental security flaw in email that allows it to be easily exploited?

[–]jimcando 11 points12 points ago

I may be completely wrong, but I think it's because if an image loads inside an email, the image server would create a log of it.

So spammers can send out emails, then they would be able to tell if the email is opened. This would tell them which are real email addresses with people who open random emails on the other side.

Or maybe even something more malicious than that is possible.

[–]Cueball61 4 points5 points ago

This is pretty much it actually.

[–]Rhyek 2 points3 points ago

What about embedded images, though?

[–]chaos386 2 points3 points ago

Those generally aren't blocked, only images that are downloaded from an external server. You'll notice the text in this post reads "Outlook prevented automatic download of this picture from the Internet."

[–]Rhyek 0 points1 point ago

I read the title. I asked specifically about embedded images. I don't personally use Outlook and was curious how it treated images emailed this way. I guess I should've made my question clearer.

[–]chaos386 0 points1 point ago

Now I'm confused. Did I answer your question or not? :S

[–]SvenHudson 2 points3 points ago

I would assume it's a precaution against sneakily subject-lined porn ads showing up at inopportune times.

[–]coffeetablesex 11 points12 points ago

This just proves that Gamestop really doesn't care how much you hate them, because they know you are all stupid enough to keep coming back.

[–]jin357[S] 23 points24 points ago

I never felt bad exploiting Gamestop. I have never once traded in a game, but I used their used game 7 day return policy to "rent" games many a time. Anarchy!

[–]Cam8895 4 points5 points ago

Very true, My friend and I bought RE:5 used with store credit, then we returned it and got cash instead of credit too.

[–]jin357[S] 3 points4 points ago

WHY DID YOU RETURN RE:5?!

[–]Cam8895 3 points4 points ago

Because I didn't actually own the xbox 360 we played on, I borrowed the console from another friend

[–]jin357[S] 5 points6 points ago

Hmmm...your response makes too much sense. Spend a couple more hours on the internet and report back.

[–]jin357[S] 2 points3 points ago

You done well kid. Go home and give your mom a kiss for me. Also, you might want to shower.

[–]D2Lblast 2 points3 points ago

I returned mine when I saw chris punch a boulder

[–]jin357[S] 1 point2 points ago

Chris Redfield does what he wants! Physics are for pussies!

[–]fingertrollin 1 point2 points ago

Saw this in webdev, but I'll upvote again. It is mildly interesting.

[–]Vole85 3 points4 points ago

I'm a web developer who has, in the past, needed to make email template. FUCK THAT.

It's like making sites for IE5.

They did a great job here, very clever.

[–]Elcarter101 1 point2 points ago

I know that the first 2 letters are "S" and "O" but I'm not sure what the last one is. Is it an "X"? If it is, what does "Sox" mean?

[–]cragelra 26 points27 points ago

it says 50%

[–]Elcarter101 7 points8 points ago

Ohh, I get it now. Derp.

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]Elcarter101 3 points4 points ago

I didn't understand that there were 2 pictures, I thought it was just one, and that the comment about "Wow, 50% more on trade ins" was about (what I thought to be) the bottom of the e-mail which I know realize is what it looks like if the e-mail client hadn't blocked the images.

Edit - "It" not "I"

[–]A_Tasty_Ham_Sandwich -3 points-2 points ago

[–]WizardlySquid 0 points1 point ago

[–]jin357[S] 7 points8 points ago

My apologies, I had not seen that. Just got the email this morning and thought it was clever.

[–]mrdude817 1 point2 points ago

Not really though. They're not quite the same.

[–]AwesomeMcPants 0 points1 point ago

So what? It's a different subreddit. I'm not subscribed to /r/webdev so I had not seen it.

[–]WizardlySquid -1 points0 points ago

But I am.

[–]AwesomeMcPants 0 points1 point ago

So if one group of friends shows you something, and an entirely different group of friends shows you the same thing a few hours later, do you say "I've seen this before, don't show me things that other people you don't know have shown me already."

Because that would be just precious.

[–]Anaphase 0 points1 point ago

That's really clever!

[–]noatm 0 points1 point ago

Very clever!

[–]shnoiv -1 points0 points ago

Oh gosh I hate Gamestop.

[–]lightatenear 0 points1 point ago

Well. Glad I sold all my Wii games yesterday.

[–]mrP0P0 0 points1 point ago

Happened on my phone. It doesn't this automatically.

[–]englad 1 point2 points ago

wow, i was sat here like.. "Wtf is sox"?

[–]chaos386 0 points1 point ago

Considering the pictures are just text, couldn't they have just...used colored text? The email client wouldn't have blocked that.

[–]jin357[S] 1 point2 points ago

There's a lot of reasons. If they pre-render the ad, they don't have to worry about client compatibility as much. The email client someone is using could be missing the correct font, could wrap the text incorrectly, could have trouble positioning the actual pictures in the ad correctly. Still a valid question though. If a webdev wants to chime in, feel free.

[–]willystylee 1 point2 points ago

People use Outlook still?

[–]relevantusername- 1 point2 points ago

I'm so glad some of these shops have age restrictions on trading in. When I was about 15 I walked down to Xtravision (a blu-ray rental place who also buy/sell games, much like Gamestop do) with a bag filled with about 50 ps2 games, excited to trade in and get (what I expected to be) HUNDREDS of euro. When I got there, much to my disappointment, they said I was too young to trade-in. Looking back, maybe that was just a very kind shop clerk who didn't want to screw me over.

[–]Trapped_SCV 0 points1 point ago

I thought it said Sox as in red sox or white sox

[–]Killerblackbelt 0 points1 point ago

Look at the top white label as the cap, the dark line down the middle looks like the Nutella, and the other white label under the dark looks like the label that would say "Nutella"

[–]f3ldman2 0 points1 point ago

Did you highlight the blocked images after screen capturing or does it just show up in your mailbox that way?

[–]sidjones182 0 points1 point ago

Went today and traded in Sly Collection, 3D Dot Game Heroes, Killzone 3, NBA 2K12, and NCAA Hand-Egg '11 today. got $60.

[–]KikiCVIII 0 points1 point ago

I just got 53 dollars store credit with this deal for Skyrim(which I played to death and am done with) and NBA 2k12(2k13 comes out in like a month). That's a hella good deal in my book.

"Walk of shame? Must have been a good night!"
"I don't want to talk about it..."
"What happened?"
"He...he scrolled me...he scrolled all the way to the bottom..."
"Oh my god, file a police report!"

[–]MythicalLeopard 1 point2 points ago

[–]mrdude817 1 point2 points ago

Well to defend myself, I bluntly zoomed in and blindly didn't see the scroll bar. But I generally do check the bottom half...if you know what I mean.

[–]jin357[S] 1 point2 points ago

Happens to the best of us :)

[–]Anaphase 1 point2 points ago

The bottom half of this image is the email after he clicked "show blocked images." They cut up the big "50% extra in-store credit" image into several smaller images and applied a background color to some of them to display the big red "50%" thing before you show the images.
