Man, that's a good quote.

[–]a_tad_rapey 44 points45 points ago

This might be the best quote I've ever read...

Thanks, I needed to realize this.

“The reason we struggle with insecurity is because we compare our behind-the-scenes with everyone else's highlight reel.” -Steve Furtick

[–]TheLionKing1 0 points1 point ago

I don't understand what does " behind-the-scenes " mean in this context?

Also what does "highlight reel" mean?

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points ago

Behind the scenes is referencing our everyday mundane life. The highlight reel is great moments in our life. Most movies that are "based on true stories" include only details from the highlight reel and ignore the boring insignificant ones.

wrote this out quickly hope that makes sense

[–]jellywish 10 points11 points ago

Brilliant.

[–]Randy_Manimal 17 points18 points ago

The reason I struggle with insecurity is because I compare things in "Highlights" magazine. You know, those pictures where you need to compare the differences. I suck at those.

[–]BrainwashDino 6 points7 points ago

I love this quote. For years I listened to friends compare themselves to "stars" and I would ask them why. They're human just like you and I and even they can't be perfect all the time, plus we only see pictures of them after they've put in hours of effort into looking perfect. I could never get them to understand that though. So sad.

[–]Qx2J 8 points9 points ago

It's like he knows why I HAD to stop using Facebook.

[–]deathschool 1 point2 points ago

I know that fucking feel. If I had sense, I'd do the same.

[–]scrchngwsl 6 points7 points ago

Holy shit, this is perfect. Not sure what to do with my blooper reel though.

[–]nogoodboyoSF 4 points5 points ago

You save it for the DVD special features

“I have often wondered how it is that every man loves himself more than all the rest of men, but yet sets less value on his own opinions of himself than on the opinions of others” - Marcus Aurelius

[–]BrittaniFaye[S] 3 points4 points ago

I can't believe my first time posting was this successful.

[–]iamshalin 1 point2 points ago

This is a great post. One of the best quotes here.

[–]deathschool 1 point2 points ago

Maybe the best.

[–]offchance 2 points3 points ago

[–]smashfalcon 3 points4 points ago

This dude gives me the heebie jeebies

[–]SoundSalad 6 points7 points ago

Me too.

In 2008, Furtick made headlines when his church gave $40,000 to members in envelopes with $5, $20, even $1,000, and told them to spend it kindly on others.[1]

Under Furtick's leadership, Elevation Church has given more than $3.4 million to local and global outreach partners since 2006. In 2011, a partnership with Charlotte Mayor Anthony Foxx was established to give 100,000 hours and $750,000 to serve Charlotte people in "The Orange Initiative." [4]

Since 2010, Furtick has hosted a week long outreach in February at Elevation Church called "Love Week."[11] During the church's 2010 "Love Week," thousands of Elevation members packed more than 10,000 sandwiches for the homeless, helped single mothers get their cars serviced, donated blood, cleaned up parks and streets, built a soccer field for local ministries and renovated buildings.[12] In 2011, Furtick led Elevation and over 25 other local churches to serve more than 34,000 hours in a single week.[13] In 2012, Elevation partnered with 31 local churches to serve 62 outreach organizations for a total of 50,340 hours around the city of Charlotte, N.C.. More than 4,800 volunteers from Furtick's church and other local churches served at more than 400 events, building houses, stocking food pantries, feeding the hungry and homeless, and holding a senior prom for elderly nursing home residents. Furtick and Elevation Church also partnered with Presbyterian Hospital-Matthews to pledge $80,000 to help fund enhancements and expansion at a local free clinic

[–]smashfalcon 2 points3 points ago

Yeah that's cool and all but watch him talk for five minutes. Heebie jeebies.

[–]Raindrops_on_Roses 0 points1 point ago

Can I just ask why? I'm a little confused why watching him speak freaks you out.

[–]smashfalcon 1 point2 points ago

He's full of baloney like any televangelist. Cheap manipulation and smarm.

[–]Raindrops_on_Roses 0 points1 point ago

Did you read your earlier comment? You read about all the things this church has done to help their community and dismiss it because you don't agree with why they're doing it? Just because you disagree with what he teaches doesn't mean he's using 'cheap manipulation', it means he has different views from your own.

[–]smashfalcon 1 point2 points ago

You asked me why he gives me the creeps. He gives me the creeps because he's a smarmy sap who comes across as disingenuous. This is completely separate from what charities his church donates to.

I live in Charlotte, where his ministry is, and there are other things I don't like about Elevation Church. I don't like how he uses shitty rock bands and slick production values to appeal to children, among other things. But again that's not what you asked.

He gives away his parishioners' money sometimes (his church is also ENORMOUS, and full of affluent white people, so I wonder what kind of percentage that really is) so that's cool but on a human level when I look at him I see a megalomaniac. I don't believe a word he says. Sorry.

[–]Raindrops_on_Roses 0 points1 point ago

I live in Charlotte too and I was just curious. You're entitled to your opinion.

[–]GetFresh 1 point2 points ago

Let me tell you that I have personally known him since we were very young children. We were very close friends right up until he went over the deep end with religion. That being said what he is now isnt at all not even for a second who he was when he decided to become a preacher. He doesnt even really step foot in our town much less the church he went to his entire life. I could care less because I am and have been an atheist but dude is a major piece of shit. Trust me I know who he is and what hes about and its like he is living his lie like in The Prestige.

[–]Magus5311 2 points3 points ago

I used to work for him and his church. Inspirational man but you get worked to the bone. I pulled a straight 70 hour shift once there.

[–]bknguyen 2 points3 points ago

I was a production volunteer at Elevation up until I went off to college, and I still felt like I was being worked to the bone. 4 services in one weekend sounds easy, but is pretty draining.

[–]sumguysr 0 points1 point ago

Straight? That's 3 days, like noon to noon to noon to noon.

edit: noon to noon to noon to 10a

[–]Dville1 3 points4 points ago

wow, fuck me, that's a brilliant statement.

[–]duskama 2 points3 points ago

The reason why I struggle with my penis size is because I compare mine to pornstars.

[–]DJRaDJ 2 points3 points ago

Wow.

Thanks.

[–]ceandros 0 points1 point ago

English isn't my first language, and I don't have any idea what does that means.

[–]alvinm 1 point2 points ago

We think we're not good enough, because we compare the best things other people do with the worst things we do.

The statement above is oversimplificated and hardly the same as the original, but I guess you get the idea.

(Alternative: We form our opinion on ourselves based on the things we do alone, but form our opinion on other people based on the things they do when they're surrounded by the people like us. That leads us to the false belief that we're not good enough.)

As a non-native English speaker like yourself, I'm hoping this helps.

[–]ceandros 0 points1 point ago

It helped me getting the spirit of the sentence, now I get it, thank you.

[–]neocharles 1 point2 points ago

I remember hearing this there the one time I went... definitely has made an impact for me.

[–]Killerrjkx 1 point2 points ago

I think I may need to be able to find this later.

I'm beyond words. This is what's been weighing me down, making me sad all the time. Thank you for this clarity.

[–]Mharbles 1 point2 points ago

As an artist I struggle with this all the time but they say you gotta get 10000 bad drawings behind you before you start putting out the good stuff.

[–]jrriojase 1 point2 points ago

This really hits home with all the facebook bullshit we've got going on these days where all you see is everyone's best. I mean no one ever posts when they're at home on a saturday night, but those who are, do post about it. Fuck facebook, seriously. I only use it to talk with people.

[–]k4hill 0 points1 point ago

So, so true.

[–]R1ddlrOnTehRoof 1 point2 points ago

Wow. This quote hit me differently than the rest.

[–]choc_is_back 0 points1 point ago

AKA 'facebook envy'

[–]3200math -1 points0 points ago

You mean the reason you try to be better in life? This is ridiculous. Let the downvotes begin.

[–]Hound-dog-gone 1 point2 points ago

Wow. The day Reddit upvoted a quote from my pastor. That is something I never thought I would say.

[–]deathschool 0 points1 point ago

This made me smile and gave me the strong urge to kick something in jubilee. This is one of the most awesome things I have ever read.

[–]GetFresh 0 points1 point ago

This scam artists life is a highlight reel built on other peoples hard earned money.

[–]Amitai45 1 point2 points ago

Fit for a Sudden Clarity Clarence type deal.
