According to the gif he'll just keep coming back

[–]tysstang 26 points27 points ago

That's because he'll discover gonewild.

[–]purdster83 38 points39 points ago

"First ti[M]e running for Prez! Be gentle, guize!"

[–]Dr_UpVoter 17 points18 points ago

"Wife left [m]e after losing the election. Any love for me here?"

[–]purdster83 20 points21 points ago

"[M]y friend Paul and I. MIC"

[–]MepMepperson -1 points0 points ago

I think I'm retarded... but what does the [M] thing mean? I see similar uses of letters around.

[–]mont94 1 point2 points ago

Male

[–]MepMepperson 0 points1 point ago

Oh... K. Thx. Before I realized what MFW actually means here, I always thought it was man for woman... Confusing

[–]rcjack86 0 points1 point ago

You mean after losing the erection?

[–]omnopticon 2 points3 points ago

That's the way it would seem, but only because we would keep reading the same AMA over and over for repeated gratification.

[–]Orobin 18 points19 points ago

I would guess that most of the questions would be something like "Defend your position on this even though this"

[–]legendaryderp 41 points42 points ago

It wouldn't be prudent for him to do an AMA on a very far left site.

[–]proteus91 21 points22 points ago

Not all of us are lefties...

[–]legendaryderp 20 points21 points ago

And neither am I. I'm saying that "averagejoeredditor" has a slightly larger than average chance to be a leftist.

[–]zinx90 12 points13 points ago

True but the non-lefties tend to get drowned out

[–]JimmyJamesMac -2 points-1 points ago

Reddit is "far left"? I think it's more "slightly left-leaning libertarian-ish"

[–]terinbune 15 points16 points ago

someone's never been to r/politics

[–]JimmyJamesMac -1 points0 points ago

tyl that /r/politics ins't reddit in it's entirety.

[–]TotallyFlaccid 0 points1 point ago

If you go to the "politics" subreddit and see 99/100 links being pro democrat, what conclusion is one to draw?

[–]JimmyJamesMac 0 points1 point ago

There is a big difference between "anti Republican" and "pro democrat (sic)."

[–]TotallyFlaccid 1 point2 points ago

okay i guess you just won the argument damnit

[–]JimmyJamesMac 0 points1 point ago

Here's the funny bit...that's not that funny. I think MOST Americans would ascribe to traditional "conservative" ideals; i.e., that people should work for a living, no handouts, low taxes, etc...BUT, that's not what the Republican party works towards. They aren't against taxes, they're against taxes on rich people. They don't give a shit if you have a job, they just don't want to pay taxes to support you. They love handouts, as long as they are going to big corporations, churches, or farmers. Democrats? Don't even get me started on them.

[–]thekeanu 6 points7 points ago

I'd say this depends on the sub, but overall I get the feeling of "far left" being average.

[–]ColonelForge 17 points18 points ago

Seeing how Reddit is a fan of so many things the GOP hates, I'd say they consider it far left.

[–]rAxxt -3 points-2 points ago

I think most of us are pretty damned moderate. But we are labelled as "lefties" or "liberals" by the right, because, in fact, they are extremely right. Or, perhaps said more accurately, their whole platform is built on marginalizing those not on their team. They operate completely independently from fact or intelligent discourse.

However, yes, the GOP's rhetoric would have you believe that anyone who disagrees with them in any way is a dirty "liberal". Don't buy it.

[–]legendaryderp -1 points0 points ago

What do you know your politics happens to be the exactly perfect one!

[–]rAxxt 0 points1 point ago

My comment was to say that the term "liberal" or "left" is over applied in the US. I didn't intend to say anything about the relative legitimacy of right or left politics. I did, however, mean to say that the GOP in it's current manifestation is a bunch of douchebags. That's my personal opinion.

There is no such thing as a perfect political position. This is why it's important to have multiple political parties and sane political discourse. Sarcasm is, however, not a part of sane political discourse.

[–]fruitylips 59 points60 points ago

What's the problem? Just ignore any question more in depth than 'what did you have for breakfast?' or 'Do you like kittens?' like Obama did and he'll be fine.

[–]MepMepperson 19 points20 points ago

You mean like Obama did yesterday? He couldn't have given more sanitized, boring answers yesterday if he tried.

[–]xAtarigeekx 19 points20 points ago

Yeah but that's okay because it was Obama. If Romney was to do that however, it would totally be him purposely avoiding the questions.

Even though reddit broke yesterday so Obama probably couldn't have answered any more, the same thing would likely happen with Romney, but again that would totally not be a valid excuse.

That how /r/politics would spin it anyway.

[–]MepMepperson 9 points10 points ago

Yea....its sad, I had to unsubscribe from that subreddit when I realized nothing was discussed there... It is filled with uninformed idiots who think being Republican means you have to be a bible thumping, rich old man, who does his best Mr. Burns impression at night while carrying a gun, and wearing a suit made of the America flag.

Intelligent people don't think all Dems are hippies, and they shouldn't think all republicans are money hungry Earth killers. There is a middle ground.

[–]vita_man -5 points-4 points ago

Well, it's because of the things you see and hear at Rallys...like the RNC, where you have a bunch of rich white people lying as much as they can to put themselves and their party in a better light.

[–]MepMepperson 8 points9 points ago

Wait until the DNC, it will be the same thing. The thing is, the President has so little to do with the direction America takes, that it's almost laughable...

[–]vita_man 2 points3 points ago

Surprisingly, you and I are in complete agreement.

[–]MepMepperson 1 point2 points ago

high five?

[–]vita_man -1 points0 points ago

virtual high five for being in agreement about the sad state of American politics

[–]MepMepperson 0 points1 point ago

'Merica

[–]Jungle_Soraka -1 points0 points ago

Now kiss.

[–]houseofdogs 0 points1 point ago

Wait until the DNC, it will be the same thing. The thing is, the President has so little to do with the direction America takes, that it's almost laughable..THIS IS A TOTALLY UNTRUE STATEMENT... THE DIFFERENCES IN THE THIS ELECTION ARE NIGHT AND DAY

[–]MepMepperson 0 points1 point ago

Oh... my mistake. You've backed up your point so well that I honestly don't know if you're being sarcastic, or just a smacktard with a broken caps lock button.

[–]houseofdogs 0 points1 point ago

You accused ryan of lying, what are the lies you are referring to.. or are you just towing the dem line to be with the cool group? because the fact is obama was not qualified to be president but many people thought he was pretty and felt good for a black man to be president even though he never succeeded at anything but running a campaign...

[–]MepMepperson -1 points0 points ago

What are you smoking? I think you got some bad stuff. At no point in my entire life have I considered myself a democrat, or even the tiniest bit liberal. I think you may have misread something. I said nothing about Ryan lying, simply made the point that the RNC is about a bunch of Republicans sucking eachothers dicks, just like the DNC will be...

[–]SensibleMadness 16 points17 points ago

The fact that he even did the AMA at all is remarkable. Not only is he obviously a very busy guy, but he and everyone else knew that his answers would be posted all over the planet and dissected by every pundit and twitter user out there, especially so close to an election. I would expect much the same from Romney if he did one (and he very well might). You can't expect these guys to sit here for hours and answer every question candidly like people who aren't the leader of the free world (or campaigning to be the leader of the free world).

[–]ThirdPoliceman 16 points17 points ago

I think what they're suggesting is that it was nothing but posturing for votes. Nothing of substance was given.

[–]Chevron 32 points33 points ago

Welcome to the entirety of any presidential campaign?

[–]ArecBardwin 11 points12 points ago

That doesn't magically make the AMA good. It was an objectively shitty AMA.

[–]Chevron 11 points12 points ago

While I agree, I think it does remove some of the blame for its failings from Obama. The fact is that in our current political atmosphere, it's completely unrealistic to expect a nominee of either of the two main parties to indulge in the kind of frank, almost personal level of discussion that is the ideal of /r/IAmA, especially when the nominee in question happens to be the current President.

Yes, Obama graced us with his half hour of presence to gain our sympathies in the upcoming election and because his campaign office calculated that it could net him some increase in votes. I choose not to fault him for acting based on such calculations. It's what you have to do to stay in office and it's what he does every day of his campaign.

[–]zxcv73 -3 points-2 points ago

Except Ron Paul. Real talk.

[–]Chevron -1 points0 points ago

True, near as I can tell. He absolutely earns a great deal of my respect for honesty.

[–]RTFW 114 points115 points ago

So, make an appearance, not really say anything, and then leave? Sounds just like Obama's AMA.

EDIT: Folks can't take a joke about the President? Come on. Everyone acted like it was the most fantabulous thing ever when he answered a couple of questions with cut and paste answers from position papers. He's a politician. I expected no more from him. If Romney does one, I expect just as little. As an AMA though, they are just wastes of time.

[–]smiddereens 19 points20 points ago

Summary of Obama's AMA: "Well, I know it's tough for a lot of folks out there and I'll do my darnedest"

[–]ageofthoughts 1 point2 points ago

That gave me a good chuckle.

[–]justinxduff 54 points55 points ago

For only being on for 30min I think he answered a good amount of questions. Being the POTUS I am sure he isn't busy at all.

[–]Wodashit 28 points29 points ago

Plus don't forget that due to the heavy load everything was going down.

[–]your_penis 6 points7 points ago

And let's be real: if he did answer a significantly large number of questions, people would be screaming (even more than now) that they were arranged ahead of time.

[–]StaffSergeant 6 points7 points ago

Likely he was answering questions after each hole on the golf course.

[–]redditrobert 0 points1 point ago

What do you mean?

[–]StaffSergeant -1 points0 points ago

Obama golfs, like all the fricking time.

[–]redditrobert 0 points1 point ago

I believe presidents are legally required to get a certain amount of physical exercise. I think that's why Nixon had the bowling alley installed in the WH. I read that Bush found it very difficult to fulfill the requirement because he really liked running, but after 9/11 the Secret Service really curtailed where he could run. I imagine golfing may just be a way to get some outdoor exercise.

Interestingly, Eisenhower golfed 800 times during his tenure.

[–]StaffSergeant 0 points1 point ago

Oh I totally agree and golfing is great. It just seems that Obama is late many times due to golf. Prime example was Operation Neptune Spear. The raid kicked off and no one was able to contact the President for several hours. He made it back as the mission was concluding.

[–]redditrobert 0 points1 point ago

I'm going to need a source for the Neptune Spear claim. Something like this

On Sunday, May 1, 2011, the president’s advisers gathered in the Situation Room at around 11 a.m. Half a world away, the SEAL team waited for nightfall.

So as not to arouse suspicion that a major gathering was under way in the West Wing, the team ordered pizza from several different places and also sent someone to Costco to get food.

The president played nine holes of golf at Andrews Air Force Base before heading to the Situation Room at around 2 p.m.

... At around 2:30 p.m., word arrived that the first wave of helicopters had left Jalalabad, Afghanistan, for Abbottabad with Navy SEALs, a Pakistani-American translator and a service dog named Cairo. At the president’s request, two Chinook helicopters stayed close by with additional SEALs as backup.

Uh, did you READ his AMA? Here are the ten questions he answered. One of them was from a young person, like myself, who graduated from law school, has a ton of loans to pay off, and can't find permanent employment. That is an extremely serious concern for many people and he addressed it, even though there is no good answer to the question.

Obama answered a question about the corrupting influence of money on campaigns and what he would do to curtail it. His thoughts:

We need to start with passing the Disclose Act that is already written and been sponsored in Congress - to at least force disclosure of who is giving to who. We should also pass legislation prohibiting the bundling of campaign contributions from lobbyists. Over the longer term, I think we need to seriously consider mobilizing a constitutional amendment process to overturn Citizens United (assuming the Supreme Court doesn't revisit it).

How exactly is that "not really say[ing] anything?" Did you expect him to say he'd legalize pot tomorrow, end the Afghanistan war and divert the Pentagon's budget toward building a permanent Moon colony? At least he won't force you to have your rapist's child like Romney/Ryan. The ungratefulness on this thread is staggering.

[–]RTFW 17 points18 points ago

No new information was passed in the whole thing. Every bit of that was from talking points he has made before.

If you do an AMA, I do expect more than just regurgitating the same stuff you have said thousands of times before. I want new info. Yay for him coming on here, but boo for just saying the same thing we have heard before.

I expect Romney would do the same if he came on here.

[–]AGayViking 3 points4 points ago

Then mayhaps redditors shouldn't ask questions that he has already answered previously from talking points? He only had 30 minutes, Reddit was down/sluggish due to immense traffic, and he is the POTUS.

He also told us who his favorite athlete is.

[–]redditrobert -1 points0 points ago

You expected him to debut major policy shifts in an AMA? How would that work? Would he prepare a whole bunch of them in the hopes that someone asked him a question about one of them?

[–]RTFW 0 points1 point ago

Yes. I expected him to announce he was a space alien, or not actually a US citizen, or that "teh drugs is free now".

Really folks. I can't complain that he just dumped a bunch of stuff he has said before without you going all over the place. Get over yourselves. He could have actually answered the questions he was given instead of giving answers with no substance. I hold all politicians tot he same standard and would bitch if Romney or Paul or Zombie Reagan did the same thing Obama did. I honestly didn't expect anything out of it and I got exactly what I expected. But too many of you are all over his jock like he gave the most wonderful answers ever. Too many of you are like little schoolgirls "OMG! Obama looked at me, he totally did." Get over yourself. He is a politician. It's cool he came on Reddit, but not so cool we should ignore that he said nothing at all of substance.

[–]antifolkhero -4 points-3 points ago

I again ask you, what did you expect him to say? I don't think telling us his favorite basketball player or talking about the White House beer recipe were "talking points." He was trying to show reddit and the world that he is an approachable guy who isn't above taking questions from people and trying to answer them honestly. Just because he didn't spend the next 5 hour sitting on reddit talking about the war on drugs doesn't mean "no new information was passed in the whole thing."

Additionally, many of us didn't about his feelings towards funding space exploration missions, dealing with the influx of money since Citizen's United, or whether or not he was in tune with the realities facing recent grads who can't find any work. He addressed those things. For me personally, it was much more courageous for him to address the out of work law student than to talk about the war on drugs. That was something I could relate to and directly affected my life.

[–]RTFW -1 points0 points ago

His answer to the student said nothing new at all and was nothing but talking points he has previously used. If you haven't heard everything he said (except maybe the beer recipe or Micheal Jordan), then you haven't been paying any attention in the last 4 years and really shouldn't vote at all. He has said it all before. Nice of him to come on here but he imparted nothing new in the AMA. Except the beer and Jordan thing. I would have preferred 30 minutes of just that stuff than spewing the same stuff he has said before.

[–]antifolkhero 2 points3 points ago

If you haven't heard everything he said (except maybe the beer recipe or Micheal Jordan), then you haven't been paying any attention in the last 4 years and really shouldn't vote at all.

The vitriol and condescension in your tone is astounding. Also, your use of terms like

spewing

to describe him answering questions gives us a peak at your bias in this situation. Obama came onto reddit and allowed anyone in the world to ask him a question. Romney would never, ever do this. Romney just forces coal miners to attend his rallies and donate for fear of retribution if they refuse.

Here is what the law school student actually asked:

What can I say to encourage those in similar situations as I am to show up again in November? What hope can you offer us for your second term?

Obama's response was that the key to more jobs in the future is a strong economy, and a strong economy is not achieved through

more taxs cuts for the wealthy (paid for by raising tax burdens on the middle class and gutting investments like education) and getting rid of regulations we've put in place to control the excesses on wall street and help consumers,

which is what the Republican advocate as a solution. This is an important distinction between the parties. Here is what Obama said he would do, specifically:

I want to keep promoting advanced manufacturing that will bring jobs back to America, promote all-American energy sources (including wind and solar), keep investing in education and make college more affordable, rebuild our infrastructure, invest in science, and reduce our deficit in a balanced way with prudent spending cuts and higher taxes on folks making more than $250,000/year.

This is compared to Romney/Ryan, who will try and ban evolution in science class, force raped woman to have their rapist's babies, and then gut public institutions to enrich mega-corporations while the rest of the country suffers. Obama answered the question thoroughly and to my satisfaction.

[–]ReverendVerse 1 point2 points ago

Sources for Romney/Ryan assumptions?

[–]RTFW -3 points-2 points ago

Glad you enjoyed it. BTW. I won't be voting to Romney either so we have one thing in common. But we differ in the fact that I refuse to vote for Obama because he is just as bad for the US as Romney, even if it is in a different way.

[–]antifolkhero 2 points3 points ago

I refuse to vote for Obama because he is just as bad for the US as Romney, even if it is in a different way.

Care to elaborate? Moderate change in the right direction is far better than major change in the wrong direction (Romney/Ryan). Also historically, shifting things more gradually makes change more likely to stick. Grand shifts are met with grand swingbacks, like the arm on a grandfather clock.

[–]RTFW 0 points1 point ago

I disagree that Obama is in the right direction. He is a crony capitalist just like Romney. But he strikes me as even more authoritarian than Romney.

[–]antifolkhero 1 point2 points ago

Can you give specific examples?

[–]zxcv73 1 point2 points ago

"Umm yes that is important and I will make note to address this issue in the future. Just make sure to vote for me."

If you consider what he gave answers I feel sorry for you.

[–]antifolkhero 4 points5 points ago

You know, for all of your complaining, no one on here has said exactly what they wanted him to say. What exactly were you expecting?

[–]zxcv73 -4 points-3 points ago

Actually I wasn't expecting the top questions to be anything but softball. So that was surprising in a very good way. But I expected exactly what happened on the answers side. I was hoping that he would give some actual hard answers that you could pin him down on and say this is what he actually believes, and this is what he actually wants. But yeah, the political rhetoric he gave was what I expected, sadly. Romney could give the exact same answers, with little change, but would that satisfy you?

[–]antifolkhero 1 point2 points ago

I was hoping that he would give some actual hard answers that you could pin him down on and say this is what he actually believes, and this is what he actually wants.

I think he did. He said he wanted to increase US manufacturing, invest in science and education, and overturn Citizens United, possibly with a Constitutional amendment. If you don't like those ideas, you can "pin" them to him. How exactly are specific answers "political rhetoric?"

[–]cpdog 0 points1 point ago

I'm laughing so hard I'm crying at the thought of people crying so much about my laughing. Seems like a ton of people need a job with a life attached to it, or vice versa.

[–]pugwalker 0 points1 point ago

I think it would be alarming if he took more than 30 minutes to answer internet questions

[–]string97bean 8 points9 points ago

This gif never fails to make me laugh.

[–]yikesireddit 1 point2 points ago

It would be....so brave.

[–]overused-meme-alert 0 points1 point ago

so brave

beeeeeeep beeeeep

[–]ageofthoughts 1 point2 points ago

Go forth and become the villain you fight.

[–]purdster83 -1 points0 points ago

Literally logged in to upvote, say, like and point THIS out.

[–]DankBeard 3 points4 points ago

I'm sure he'd cherry pick the same softball questions Obama did anyway.

[–]purdster83 2 points3 points ago

No one wants to talk to reddit, they just want to say they "did the reddit thing". It's publicity. Rampart.

[–]NeutralGoodAlignment 12 points13 points ago

Obama should change the name of his AMA to AMSQ. Ask Me Softball Questions.

Either that or, "I am Barack Obama. Ask Me....Rampart."

[–]Me_bender 2 points3 points ago

This gif is backwards. The logo should be in the right hand corner. I have only seen in done correctly once. My life is a lie.

[–]fuckingnihilists 0 points1 point ago

I came to mention the gif was flipped, too.

[–]Loasbans 2 points3 points ago

I think we should invite him, its only fair.

Though I doubt he can expect similar, fair, treatment (respect, asking reasonable questions etc).

[–]thereallurker 6 points7 points ago

Very true. Unfortunately, Romney supporters are too busy working.

[–]allthatsalsa -2 points-1 points ago

Right, because supporting Obama means you're a jobless entitled leech that doesn't pay taxes. I get it now.

[–]Dr_UpVoter -5 points-4 points ago

jobless entitled leech that doesn't pay taxes.

Which is funny because the rich don't pay taxes either. Bazinga!

[–]thereallurker 4 points5 points ago

Contrary to your diluted thought process, the top 10% pay more than 70% of Federal Income Taxes.

http://ntu.org/tax-basics/who-pays-income-taxes.html

Who the fuck says Bazinga?

[–]Colest -1 points0 points ago

Percentages how do they work?

[–]Dr_UpVoter -4 points-3 points ago

It was a joke. Relax. Bazinga is also a reference to a television show. Now pull your panties out of your ass. It isn't proper.

[–]biocs_nerd 2 points3 points ago

You're probably right, but I'd hope Americans would welcome the opportunity to have a civil chat with someone that may (science forbid) well end up being your president.

[–]ThirdPoliceman 9 points10 points ago

But c'mon. This is Reddit. That would never, ever, ever happen.

[–]JustaNiceRegularDude 3 points4 points ago

I just hope there will be less grammar Nazis present.

[–]md453 1 point2 points ago

" an, Mr. President.....An asteroid." I thought that was hilarious!

[–]JustaNiceRegularDude 1 point2 points ago

I thought it was kind of sad/pitiful. Five point ellipses are simply tragic.

[–]rocconyew 0 points1 point ago

I seriously doubt that he would follow suit on this. Paul Ryan maybe, but I think Romney will actually stay out of reddit.

[–]Draft_Punk -1 points0 points ago

This was the first thing I thought when I saw Obama's AMA. Romney will try to do one in response and it'll be Rampart Part II..

[–]TheDarkDoctor 0 points1 point ago

Don't hold your breath. Romney will never do an AMA, especially during election season.

[–]fubes2000 -1 points0 points ago

Come on guys, I'd really like to focus discussion on my new movie Rampart.

[–]af3696 0 points1 point ago

Currently, I think Paul Ryan is getting more hate than ol' Mittens.

[–]BubkaPenis 0 points1 point ago

Nope

[–]spoon00 0 points1 point ago

I'm sure it will be just as staged

[–]oliverMcMayonnaise -1 points0 points ago

Rney would answer any question you have for him. He's that type of guy. I promise. This stage of non-softball questions would be be perfect for the conservative base. To actually be able to get the liberals to see that extra little thought process necessary to understand how the country needs to work. I say ask away, and he won't shy away.

[–]napalm17 1 point2 points ago

worthless fucking liberals.

[–]KiLLaKRaGGy -1 points0 points ago

that's exactly what Obama did

[–]empw 1 point2 points ago

I don't think I've even even considered this from Bart's point of view, but it works here.

[–]BlackbeltJones 1 point2 points ago

Nah, it'd be more like a Kennedy-Nixon AMA.

To use a Simpsons reference,

Kennedy: (confidently) "I'd like to, er-uh, take this opportunity to express my fondness for Duff Beer!"

Nixon: (unconvincingly) "Urrgh, I'd also like to... express... my fondness... for that particular beer..."

[–]herrschaft 1 point2 points ago

Present the less popular side of an important debate? Preposterous.

[–]0311 -1 points0 points ago

LOL at all the whiny bitches in this thread crying about the freaking President of the United States only giving 30 minutes of his time to a freaking website that he had probably never heard of before. Grow up, kids.

[–]DrunkNessMonster -4 points-3 points ago

Cuz redditors hate religion. Way to be tolerant

[–]RMHX -1 points0 points ago

Jumping to conclusions?

[–]lurker_becomes_lurkd 3 points4 points ago

It's an established fact that the hive mind hates religion.

[–]ApologeticCanadian -1 points0 points ago

...except /r/atheism is one of the most loathed subreddits out there.

[–]lurker_becomes_lurkd 1 point2 points ago

Because they're not really atheists there. Many of my atheist friends refuse to visit that subreddit. It's just a big circlejerk there. 10% of posts are worth reading there.
