top 200 commentsshow all 233

[–]coffeeholic91 403 points404 points ago

I literally saw it when it had 3 comments.. I looked, saw it was legit.. "WHAT AM I GONNA ASK HIM!!" I thought of something, commented and looked... I was like the 750th comment in that 1 minute span of time.

[–]prannisment 233 points234 points ago

The AMA currently has more than 100,000 upvotes, more than any post in the history of Reddit.

[–]StopReadingMyUser 103 points104 points ago

And 8000+ karma. I've never seen anything reach close to 6000.

[–]prannisment 178 points179 points ago

Check out all time highest rated posts for All subreddits. There's a post called "Test Post Please Ignore" with 20,000 points. Redditors sure do enjoy irony.

[–]i_love_cake_day 66 points67 points ago

That's because reddit's voting system is completely borked. Posts that are popular now get +6000-8000 upvotes and then steadily go down. I specifically remember the bin Laden post having +8000 upvotes within an hour or two after being posted, but now sits at just +3000.

edit: fixed link

[–]Sazabi00 78 points79 points ago

I can confirm this. When I initially viewed Obama's AMA, it had 14,000+ upvotes. Now it's around 4000.

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]Ocrasorm 16 points17 points ago

It doesn't mater what post, it is always going to go down because of the system they have in place to prevent vote tampering. The best way to get an idea on how popular a post is, is to check the upvotes. The majority of the downvotes on that AMA are not real.

[–]Slayz 6 points7 points ago

What do you mean pathetic? Do you know how reddit works? Every post automatically gets downvoted if it gets too many upvotes.

[–]Vexillae -1 points0 points ago

I'm guessing Fox News found out by that time? /s

[–]whale_pubes 8 points9 points ago

Why does every post on reddit do this? It always reaches a peak, and then goes downhill. 1 hour into the AMA this had 16000 karma. Now it's down to 4000.

[–]anddup 22 points23 points ago

It's an automatic vote fuzzing (downvote) algorithm that prevents posts from rising too high too quickly, mainly as a counter measure against spam/bot voting (so that someone can't net together a few thousand accounts and soar advertisements to the top of reddit... not that users here don't already upvote blatant viral marketing anyway)

The algorithm also serves as a way to correctly (more or less) rank submissions in terms of overall popularity. That being that currently, a single post could technically net ~2 million (based off of an estimate of account totals, assuming that users can't have multiple accounts, which is false) upvotes while just a year ago the largest userbase of any single subreddit was under 1 million users, but the algorithm moves the net point amount of any single post towards the few thousand range at best.

reddit is very open source however the vote fuzzing algorithm is not available for public viewing (at least I don't think so) so it's nearly impossible to tell how many downvotes a submission actually receives, though it would be a fair to guess that time plays a big role in this algorithm.

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]anddup 2 points3 points ago

No problem. On a partially related note, you may want to check out this comment which talks about the ranking/voting system and links to (more or less) the ranking algorithm (not the same as vote fuzzing). It also has a good discussion on the effects of the way reddit's voting system works.

[–]c3bhm 1 point2 points ago

Word.
On a related note, are there any other sites out there on the web that have a superior system, overall, or is reddit actually the cutting edge right now for effective discussions/forums? (Personally, I think it's fantastic and have seen nothing like it. Love it.)

[–]anddup 1 point2 points ago

Not that I've found. It's not so much that it's cutting edge, but more user abilities. The thing that reddit has that makes it different from other sites is that any user can create his/her own section of the website to focus on aggregation and discussion of a certain topic at any level of obscurity (ex: /r/picturesofiansleeping), and at the same time hold a certain level of anonymity that allows users to be comfortable enough to share their honest opinions.

The problem with this is that there's no way to have quality control over the site, and that's because it's almost impossible to set standards at such a level of user freedom. Ultimately we're left to mods (who often don't moderate out of fear of user backlash) and users (here is where the flaws in the voting system fit in) to be in charge of quality (upvoting/downvoting from users, approving/removing/setting rules from moderators).

If another site were to be created in the sole purpose to compete with reddit on the same level of user freedom, it would have to do something similar to the submission ranking described here, but in a way that users couldn't easily abuse (imagine a post being ranked by comment quantity and a user using hundreds of dummy accounts to comment on that submission, that wouldn't be a good thing).

What's more likely to happen is that the default subreddit "community" (aka the hivemind) will get angry enough at certain moderators/site design changes, find a new website and take its mentality over there (google search "digg exodus") leaving the people who've been trying to use reddit as an aggregator all along.

[–]Bliss86 0 points1 point ago

Short time - high vote count --> high rank

longer time - high vote count --> middle rank

[–]theruins 2 points3 points ago

That link just goes to the tweet. Could you post a link to the actual thread? I'm interested in how reddit reacted.

[–]Psy_Crow 0 points1 point ago

[Obama AMA thread] Osama Bin Laden thread

[–]theruins 1 point2 points ago

I mean the Osama Bin Laden death thread.

[–]therealpersona 4 points5 points ago

it's not borked, it's just logarithmic and it normalizes with time so that the front page is always filled with 800-3600 point posts no matter how many people are voting.

[–]cordycepshumanis 0 points1 point ago

So couldn't they just do that behind the scenes while still showing the actual upvote numbers?

[–]tyrghast 0 points1 point ago

Everyone should know by now that the actual number is fudged at all times, everything on reddit is technically 'trending' constantly meanwhile the real numbers are kept hidden to throw power users (at least that was the intent, we all see shit like karmanaut and andrewsmith1985 constantly).

[–]StopReadingMyUser 1 point2 points ago

… Well damn…

[–]checkmateathiests 4 points5 points ago

Yeah, but I think reddit changed the downvote bot algorithm or something. Older posts have many more net votes than newer posts. What really matters is the upvotes, not the upvotes minus the downvotes.

[–]Bunzaak 6 points7 points ago

15000 karma in 8 hours.

Who is this guy?

[–]yobobly 0 points1 point ago

He must be pretty popular if he has garnered so much attention in such a small amount of time.

[–]TheBestBigAl 0 points1 point ago

When I looked it was over 21000, I couldn't believe it. I was amazed when the Neil Armstrong post had over 8000 (and rightfully so), would never have thought a post would get so much karma in such a short space of time.

[–]mr_k_pilkington 2 points3 points ago

Where is he going to spend all that karma???

[–]qervem 2 points3 points ago

[–]cordoroy 1 point2 points ago

well played

[–]kaze06 0 points1 point ago

It was up to around 14,000 at one point but it dropped pretty quickly.

[–]Eleminohp 0 points1 point ago

The Neil Armstrong passing story hit 6k as soon as I hit upvote

[–]LazarWulf 0 points1 point ago

It had over 25,000 karma when I first saw it...1 hour later, 8K. Weird.

[–]Psy_Crow 7 points8 points ago

From my understanding the number of upvotes and downvotes are not completely true.

A submission's score is simply the number of upvotes minus the number of downvotes. If five users like the submission and three users don't it will have a score of 2. Please note that the vote numbers are not "real" numbers, they have been "fuzzed" to prevent spam bots etc. So taking the above example, if five users upvoted the submission, and three users downvote it, the upvote/downvote numbers may say 23 upvotes and 21 downvotes, or 12 upvotes, and 10 downvotes. The points score is correct, but the vote totals are "fuzzed". We also shower certain posts that get upvotes quickly after being posted with many upvotes. If your post does not accumulate enough upvotes in the time we have allocated, it will certainly fall to its doom on page 471 of /new. So make sure to have a very shallow gripping title that only barely reflects its content.

source

[–]LennyPalmer 0 points1 point ago

It now also has more than 100,000 downvotes, I believe also more than any other post.

[–]bitparity 4 points5 points ago

it's now down to 5,000. It's an interesting reflection of the greater electorate, as its 51% upvote, 49% downvote, despite having over 300,000 total votes.

[–]Rocket_Tuna 26 points27 points ago

Hello, bitparity! You've been here a while, you should know that those numbers do not at all reflect the actual number of downvotes. Here's a great comment by Brisco_County_III that explains the automatic downvotes in greater detail. In reality, the AMA has far fewer real downvotes than shown.

[–]a_unique_username 1 point2 points ago

People keep saying this but it doesn't account for the karma score you see. Only the numbers on the right.

It has been stated that the score is correct and doesn't have vote fudging.

[–]IAmCuddles 7 points8 points ago

Doesn't reddit auto-balance it a bit for some reason?

[–]fishbulbx 0 points1 point ago

And for some reason, I saw this post first... Or is this an /r/politics thing?

[–]therealpersona 39 points40 points ago

I wrote a script using the reddit api to grab the comments so I could run some queries on them. I was only able to grab about 1400 comments because I kept getting 504 errors. (These errors were not due to flooding the server, I have a timer implemented that allows only 1 request every 3 seconds and have used it in the past with great results). Here are a few keywords that came up. The count is the number of comments that contained the respective word:

62 internet
58 cat
21 afghanistan
10 health
6 neutrality
6 nasa
5 iraq
5 privacy
5 ndaa
4 patriot
4 tsa
2 detention
1 guantanamo
0 corpus
0 ndaa2012

way to go, reddit

[–]space_goat 22 points23 points ago

58 cat

[–]Overlay 8 points9 points ago

This is very cool. Thanks for sharing.

[–]catchuontherippedsid 63 points64 points ago

Fuck it, up vote for the Oregon Trail

[–]brettins 26 points27 points ago

Which version of oregon trail has these magical cgi sequences?

[–]AirPhforce 12 points13 points ago

OT2, it's also voiced, one of the early CD-Rom games.

[–]libertylemon 6 points7 points ago

Man alive, I do NOT remember these animated sequences from OT2. I remember the awkward conversations with NPCs, though.

[–]AirPhforce 2 points3 points ago

Had the Macintosh version. They had these sequences.

[–]LennyPalmer 10 points11 points ago

I'm curious, too. This looks era's ahead of any version of Oregon Trail I ever played.

[–]cattailboner 1 point2 points ago

Exactly, this question must be answered! Anybody? Bueller?

[–]CrystalKU 3 points4 points ago

It is version 5 from 2002, I have the cd it is one of the few games that actually still runs in Vista.

[–]cattailboner 0 points1 point ago

thank you.

[–]Software_Engineer 5 points6 points ago

How the hell did I already know what it was going to be before I clicked?

[–]Deimos365 2 points3 points ago

This... this is one of my favourite things.

[–]spund 1 point2 points ago

This get funnier the long you watch it.

[–]savageboredom 1 point2 points ago

I'm of the mind that the Benny Hill theme makes everything funny. Once, on a whim, I decided to search Youtube for '9/11 yakety sax.' I laughed and was immediately filled with an incredible shame.

[–]briiblossom 0 points1 point ago

This suits the gif well. However, it perfectly sets the tone to my futile attempts at refreshing Obama's AMA page. Oh god was that frustrating.

[–]kyethn 0 points1 point ago

I want you to know that I have multiple sprained ribs and spent about ten minutes watching this, utterly transfixed and in excruciating pain from the laughter. I'm going to bill you for the codeine. GOOD DAY.

[–]jdrobertso 21 points22 points ago

Go to /u/PresidentObama if you want to see his responses.

[–]yellekc 8 points9 points ago

I think he has the highest Karma/Time ratio of any user.

15,000+ comment karma in about 30 minutes? Not Bad.

[–]savageboredom 4 points5 points ago

Until a few hours ago, I had more comment karma than the President. I was irrationally proud of this fact.

Now I'm just another schlub like everyone else.

[–]yellekc 5 points6 points ago

It took me 2 years to build my comment karma. Took Obama 30 minutes to beat it.

[–]savageboredom 3 points4 points ago

Damn Washington fat cats, swooping in and taking karma away from hard working Americans. It's time for a good ol' fashioned revolution. Yee-haw!

[–]stutheidiot 12 points13 points ago

All ten of them.

[–]gueriLLaPunK[!] 22 points23 points ago

. . .were you not here when the site was DOWN?

[–]imbored53 54 points55 points ago

To be fair, he was probably having just as much trouble with loading/refreshing the thread as the rest of us were.

[–]cyclura 1 point2 points ago

There must be differences depending where you're accessing from? My company has a fast T1 line and there was no downtime for me during the whole time Obama was online. I assume the White House has a similar fast connection and wasn't affected. Is that possible?

[–]JaminThaGreat 2 points3 points ago

He stated that he "had to get back to DC for dinner" so he wasn't at the White House.

[–]wakewolfie 11 points12 points ago

He said he'd only be answering questions for 30 minutes and the site was down for most of that.

[–]Reanimator 0 points1 point ago

Could have just as easily been zero...

[–]Rabid_statue 9 points10 points ago

I laughed way too hard at this. Spot on, spot on.

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]billmalarky 75 points76 points ago

Well he only had half an hours set aside for it. And his answers were thought out and long, not like 1 sentence bs responses.

[–]TheRnegade 72 points73 points ago

He's president of the United States and running a campaign. The fact that he would spend any time answer questions on reddit already blows my mind.

[–]KioshiRawk 14 points15 points ago

"Let's stick to the elections."

[–]ThisBikeIsAPipeBomb 22 points23 points ago

It really blows your mind?

Like you said, he's running a campaign. He's trying to appeal to a large group of large potential voters. And whether they were going to vote for Obama or doesn't really matter, he got them hooked.

Edit: large group of young potential voters. He was able to snag them in '08 and now he's trying again.

[–]kiraella 8 points9 points ago

Because Romney is obviously giving him a run for his money in that department.....

It's brilliant actually. Young people are an untapped resource. Malleable, enthusiastic, optimistic. Get the youth to help your campaign on a volunteer basis and you've got an efficient, low cost campaign machine.

[–]carloscondit 3 points4 points ago

Gary Johnson did an AMA well before. Would you say that was 'brilliant' as well? Ron Paul did it too, did you think that was 'brilliant' too?

[–]kiraella 0 points1 point ago

I wasn't calling his AMA brilliant. I was calling his strategy to target youth brilliant. But thank-you for the links.

[–]weaverster 1 point2 points ago

That's part of how he did it last time

[–]jacobchapman 4 points5 points ago

So let me get this straight.

Obama wants young voters. He can reach several thousands of young adults for free through an open forum, garnering not only their respect and trust for reaching out to them in honesty, but their potential vote as well?

Why was this not treated like a traditional campaign stop? These campaigns spend an entire day traveling out to a speech where every member in the crowd is ALREADY VOTING FOR YOU, and Obama gives Reddit, this massive "untapped resource" of potential votes half an hour??

Somebody seriously dropped the ball here. Look at that thread. Look how many people could've walked away from there saying "holy shit, Obama legitimately acted like somebody I'd vote for." Instead, everyone's asking "that's it?"

How much is a couple of hours on a Wednesday night?

[–]BuddhistSagan -1 points0 points ago

The candidates rarely spend an entire day campaigning in one location or city. That said I would always prefer more time, but the guy is busy.

[–]ThisBikeIsAPipeBomb 0 points1 point ago

They wanted the publicity of it all.

Maybe I'm wrong, but so far I've seen far "Obama's on reddit omg" comments than "Obama did nothing" comments.

[–]TheBestBigAl 1 point2 points ago

What surprises me is that the username PresidentObama wasn't already taken. I guess PresidentObama_draws_with_crayons was already taken.

[–]cattreeinyoursoul 0 points1 point ago

Maybe Reddit took it from the person who had it. Or maybe Obama has had it for awhile and he spends his free time lurking. He could be watching us right now....

[–]TheBestBigAl 0 points1 point ago

The account is only 3 days old, so I guess they probably took it from someone else.

[–]iMakeChickenNoises 11 points12 points ago

Don't forget that it was almost impossible to actually load a whole page without problems

[–]imbored53 13 points14 points ago

Seriously, everyone seems to be missing this point. I'm sure he had trouble with the overload too.

[–]vertigo42 1 point2 points ago

Yes answers like Michael Jordan is my favorite athlete, and I want to release the white House beer recipe are really what we need to know.

[–]Drekken- 0 points1 point ago

These guys celebrating about this AMA is a joke! He didn't answer anything with substance and only answered like 10 questions. I would bet my house that it wasn't even him sitting at the computer. Everyone complains about pandering, but man... people just love to be pandered.

[–]linds360 1 point2 points ago

Not to mention the fact that reddit was down nearly the entire time.

[–]ResilientHodor 2 points3 points ago

When I finally got in, it was read only but I still got huge one.

[–]lwish117 4 points5 points ago

This is one of the funniest gifs I've ever seen, even without the title. I used to play that game all the time.

[–]Epershand 4 points5 points ago

I just broke down laughing. That was so great, thank you?

[–]KiNGofKiNG89 4 points5 points ago

So that is why Reddit was slow today....

[–]anilm2 16 points17 points ago

Yeah, too bad it was barely worth reading.

He answered only a handful of questions, and all of them softballs; mostly points he's made before.

Granted, he probably had as much trouble submitting answers as we had loading the page. Still, would have been nice to see some legit good questions answered or to have been able to ask one.

[–]ScorpionsSpear 13 points14 points ago

Yeah, what was he thinking. Trying to run the country and a campaign.

Instead of complaining, why not just appreciate that he did it at all? He's probably the busiest person in the world.

[–]rishav_sharan 0 points1 point ago

yeah, so he did the AMA himself? right. of course, a team of his pr managers didn't do it. that certainly doesn't sounds plausible at all...

[–]pizzlethizzle 7 points8 points ago

You, like others, seem to not realize that the AMA was for his campaign. He did it to get votes, not because he thought it would be a nice thing to answer several people's questions on Reddit.

[–]cattreeinyoursoul 5 points6 points ago

So why aren't we allowed to feel like it was just a lame, pointless pander-fest? He chose to do an AMA and that may not mean anything to him, but it does to some of us. It's not "Ten Questions."

I understand that he is busy, but he should understand that his attempt to gain favor may have had the opposite effect with some people.

[–]jacobchapman 2 points3 points ago

Not sure why you're getting downvoted. It should've been a campaign tactic. Hell it could've been a really great one. Thousands of young voters getting to ask him questions they want answered. That's free potential votes for him.

[–]BuddhistSagan 1 point2 points ago

2 were soft balls and he answered popular questions.

[–]Drekken- 0 points1 point ago

Yeah the popular ones that were safe to answer that everyone already knew what he would say. I am not impressed at all. I wanted to read about what Obama meant by having more freedom in the next four years when he was on a hot mic. I wanted his opinion on the drug war. I wanted to hear something that mattered like why this outrageous spending hasn't been stopped. But you know, I can rest easy knowing Obama picked MJ as his favorite B-Ball player. Even that answer was a safe one.

[–]BuddhistSagan 0 points1 point ago

So put blame where it should be - blame reddit for making it easy for him, not Obama.

Also maybe you should learn what record low interest rates are and the unemployment rate, in reference to your question about outrageous spending.

[–]Drekken- 0 points1 point ago

I saw plenty of good questions right at the top of the list just ignored. Obama picked which questions to answer.

Unemployment has been over 8% for his entire term. Do you find this acceptable? Plus people are just pulled out of the job pool to skew the numbers. More than 8% are unemployed. It is scary... What is more scary is people defending this administration.

[–]BuddhistSagan 0 points1 point ago

Like I said, learn what record low interest rates. And By the way, you should also know that the president is the leader of the EXECUTIVE branch, and can only pass bills (like jobs bills) that arrive at his desk.

The congress is accountable too, including the republican held house.

[–]DngrZnExpwyClosed 6 points7 points ago

call me a luddite but I am not familiar with that gif, is it a game? If so I think i want to check it out. Could you elucidate me?

[–]SaloL 16 points17 points ago

I believe it's an Oregon Trail game, Mr. Luddite.

[–]DngrZnExpwyClosed 5 points6 points ago

thanks but I was looking for specifics so as to avoid the dysentery when I play this specific iteration of that game.

[–]SaloL 9 points10 points ago

Ah, I believe it's the 5th addition for PC. Amazon Link

Edit: Curse you google images!

[–]kirona_skymage 2 points3 points ago

Truest post of the day.

[–]jwalk830 2 points3 points ago

I must be too old. Oregon trail never showed pictures when I played. You had to read what happened. Except for hunting, then you got to shoot little motherfuckers. The worst part is I'm 24, not that old!

[–]libertylemon 0 points1 point ago

25 and I totally played OT2 and it was freakin' bad ass. The first one was cool, but OT2 was where it was at.

[–]v4-digg-refugee 2 points3 points ago

I just realized a bit ago that this is why Reddit has been down all day.

[–]xyroclast 2 points3 points ago

What is this 3D wizardry? This is what fording the river looks like: http://bp3.blogger.com/_P90GnCCv1oI/SHwLc3HmhhI/AAAAAAAABNE/FTblQYWU_Kg/s400/Ford%2BRiver.jpg

Less typhus though.

[–]SavageNutDump 0 points1 point ago

Holy shit is that an updated version of Oregon Trail!?

[–]GrotesDZs 0 points1 point ago

Just keep swimming, just keep swimming.

[–]Honestly_ 1 point2 points ago

I am convinced this was really all just one big elaborate ruse to test exactly how much of a load the Reddit serves could take

[–]zitfarmer 1 point2 points ago

The gif of my life.

[–]itriedtoquitreddit 0 points1 point ago

At least you didn't die of dysentery. :)

Is that all the different ways you can fail to cross a river in Oregon Trail?

[–]SDcowboy82 0 points1 point ago

What is that, some kind of high def Oregon Trail?

There was a 3D version of Oregon trail?

[–]criticalnegation -1 points0 points ago

you missed nothing. basically copy pasted some party line shiat and promised internet freedom "but there might be obstacles" or some such nonsense.

[–]asldkfououhe 0 points1 point ago

it was some pretty cheap pandering cliche bullshit so don't feel bad

[–]JBreezyyy 1 point2 points ago

OREGON FAIL!

[–]atavan -4 points-3 points ago

Well - now the whole world knows about reddit thanks to Obama. It was fun while it lasted boys.
