This is why Bill Nye fears for the next generation.

[–]adamwho 11 points12 points ago

Yep, teachers with their shirts unbuttoned to the navel.... a thing to be feared.

[–]Carodee7 6 points7 points ago

To be fair, "created" is a pretty loaded word. I don't know any secularist who uses this word to describe it. It would have been better for him to say, "think back to how the world was formed."

Haha, pretty related, but not atheist:

In 9th grade my science teacher asked the class what we thought the earth was like before there was life on it.

Sure as shit, one of the stupidest kids in class raised his hand and confidently replied "I bet it was just really nice and clean, with forests everywhere."

[–]Draziil 5 points6 points ago

I can almost understand what he meant. When the teacher said "life" the kid probably didn't think to include plant-life and maybe he thought the planet was just devoid of animals and covered in greenery and mountains. This isn't an outrageous thing to believe.

[–]Z3rdPro 1 point2 points ago

There was primitive water life before trees.

[–]Draziil 1 point2 points ago

oh, I know this, but someone who is not at all familiar with evolutionary biology might not.

[–]Cheese_Bits -1 points0 points ago

And that has exactly what to do with draziil's comment? They were obviously aware of this.

I can never imagine this happening at any of the schools I went to. Also, I don't I ever heard anyone mention "God" during any of our science classes.

*went to all public schools

[–]steakbake 1 point2 points ago

I went to a Catholic school and never heard god mentioned in science classes.

[–]veryoriginal78 1 point2 points ago

You're a lucky one, then. I went to Catholic school and "God" was our science class.

WHERE IS THIS HEAVEN

[–]Bionerd 1 point2 points ago

Vegas money says a public school somewhere on one the coast states, east or west, in or near a major city.

[–]Thunder_child0 0 points1 point ago

Damn... ive been there and I thought it was too religious.... guess I have bad standards.

[–]Bionerd 0 points1 point ago

To be fair, I'm talking a bit out of my ass, my personal experience has only been with Connecticut, which is fairly irreligious, and mocking creationists is a pastime everyone pretty enjoys in, including the teachers, which gets seriously awkward when one or two kids in class cops to being one.

I had a freshman intro to philosophy class once where this older minister said, "AIDS is created from one man's penis rubbing inside another man's anus, that's god's punishment."

To the class's credit, we all stared at him like he was an idiot, including the professor, who said, "I don't know where you got that, but that's wrong."

"But I..."

"I'm going recommend you take a biology course, this is outside my field, but viruses aren't magically created like that."

the Bay Area :D

[–]BlackdogLao 1 point2 points ago

Maybe after he said "think back to how the world was created", there was a bit of a discussion and it came about, that about half the class was in favor of a divine creator.

But i prefer to imagine it just as you have described it, he says "think back to how the world was created" and half the class without pause all chanted back in eerie unison "God" as if they were all some mindless automatons, leaving the teacher to internally freak out, and wonder if he could make it to the door of the classroom before they could catch him, and would history condemn him for leaving the rest of you to be brainwashed!

[–]RickRay1 0 points1 point ago

That's precisely what's wrong with American education! Too stupid to understand the evolution of the earth? Try religion!

[–]Ohnoeee 0 points1 point ago

If I were your teacher, I would've pointed to the door.

[–]cumfarts 0 points1 point ago

Yea high school was fun

[–]Primal80s 1 point2 points ago

This reminds me of when I was doing A-level geography. The teacher was asking about the initial conditions for the formation of the Earth. Perhaps I was initially too poetic with my answer, but I started with "The creation of the solar system..." I would have gone on to talk about dust, planetesimals, the Great Bombardments, etc. You know...Science.

He cut me off after "solar system" and told me that I'm entitled to my beliefs but I should explain in a geographical context. Never, as a child who grew up absolutely craving and devouring scientific knowledge, especially in the fields of physical geography and astronomy, did I feel so cut down and deflated. I was made to look like fundie at worst and a fool at best for my enthusiasm.

edit: grammar

[–]monkeyhousezen 1 point2 points ago

You adopted the language of fundamentalists so its not surprising you were cut off. He probably thought you were going to start testifying.

Should have used "formation" rather than "creation".

[–]Primal80s 1 point2 points ago

I know now. I was apathetic and ignorant to atheistic/theistic thinking at that point in my life. The blindfold was still on and I was still the centre of the universe, like most teenagers.

Still stings though.

[–]1agitator 1 point2 points ago

This should be in WTF, because that's what I said. That's scary.

[–]SockofBadKarma 0 points1 point ago

Your teacher is Simon Cowell? That's pretty nifty.
