Same but with professors...I had one yesterday who started with "http".

[–]Back2BagDad 9 points10 points ago

Doubt they were going for this, but using "https" can get around a lot of basic internet censors for blocked web sites.

[–]Swanron 0 points1 point ago

this got me through study hall for years

[–][deleted] 26 points27 points ago

True, but however, professors may be more open to criticism than your employers in whose case best course of action would be just zipping it.

[–]slowmotionjones 7 points8 points ago

I had a professor who tried to refresh a page by pressing F and 5.

[–]Coloneljesus 3 points4 points ago

Is that worse than trying to write F5 by pressing F5?

[–]SnowLeppard 1 point2 points ago

Be honest here, how many times did you refresh this page trying to write that comment?

[–]Coloneljesus 0 points1 point ago

0

[–]farmthis 1 point2 points ago

maybe he didn't want to visit an ftp site.

[–]loletto 1 point2 points ago

My mom does that. She's adorable.

[–]MindlessDreamer 1 point2 points ago

We know

[–]MindlessDreamer 0 points1 point ago

IT GOES FASTER

[–]kikikannibal 60 points61 points ago

My friend types google.com in google search to google. :(

[–]praseodymium 34 points35 points ago

I thought that broke the internet?

[–]ItWasTheButterfly 11 points12 points ago

Please, no one try it. Even for a joke.

[–]MindlessDreamer 1 point2 points ago

I tried it and broke the internet, I'll update when I can reply.

[–]eesokaymaigne 7 points8 points ago

Partner at my law firm included "google" in the search in front of me the other day. I said something.

[–]everythingswan 1 point2 points ago

True man of the people.

[–]farmthis 1 point2 points ago

I do this all the time absentmindedly.

[–]EasilyRemember 0 points1 point ago

I type "google image" in Chrome's omnibar to use google image search. Granted, that's usually when I'm using the "find similar images tool", and when that happens, I don't know a faster way to get there. If you just type the image URL that you copied, it'll [obviously] just take you to the image itself, so typing "google image" is the only workaround I've been able to come up with.

[–]PrmnntThrwwy 2 points3 points ago

You can go to images.google.com and click the little black and white camera to the left of the search button.

[–]spy323 0 points1 point ago

If he does it one more time he'll end up on Bing

[–]Naajj 0 points1 point ago

[–]RideBmx11 -1 points0 points ago

My friend types google.com in google search chrome search to google. :(

this for me.

[–]x3knet 51 points52 points ago

I hate to be that guy, and 99% of the time you won't get an error, but some sites do not resolve unless you include the "www." in the URL.

It's due to an "A" record not existing in the DNS. Like I said, most of the time this won't happen though.

Disregard, I'm an idiot who doesn't read. Carry on.

[–]eggsandbeans 28 points29 points ago

Thank you for taking that one for the team. I was about to come blundering in here with the same response. I missed the google bit too. You're a champ.

[–]supersede 3 points4 points ago

what is wrong with us? I had the same reaction. Title explicitly states google search and my brain totally shit itself and ignored that.

[–]Stiggy1605 7 points8 points ago

Since you mentioned it, it annoys me so much that I have to type www. when visiting my university's website. So Goddamn much.

[–]xSmurf 1 point2 points ago

I agree, and if you see something, say something: don't let people be the Class-Douchebag.

[–]cak3crumbs 6 points7 points ago

I still have an aol email address.

[–]starphish 17 points18 points ago

You should do an AMA.

[–]BranchedOut 7 points8 points ago

I work at a highly awarded IT company. I've got a few certifications under my belt. I'm pretty handy with computers.

But do you know what my top google search is?

Google.com

I don't know why I do it. I just do.

[–]Sophophilic 1 point2 points ago

Because sometimes you want to Google something that would otherwise resolve.

[–]CuriousAbra 0 points1 point ago

ctrl+e in chrome and firefox

[–]Sophophilic 0 points1 point ago

I always forget. :(

[–]scruffy01 2 points3 points ago

i sometimes get stuck in a mental loop googling the word "google"

I've been doing IT work for a decade.

[–]bidness_cazh 2 points3 points ago

2 years since I first thought about taking him aside and he still calls a web address a YERL. More like YUREL. it's terrible.

[–]Juch 3 points4 points ago

Maybe they are going to www.nasa.gov

[–]TheKesselRun 3 points4 points ago

You got downvoted for that...but you're right.

Try going to nasa.gov - it does not work!

[–]toebox 4 points5 points ago

'www.domain.tld' and 'domain.tld' are technically different names, they both have to be explicitly set up and pointed to the same place in both DNS and the web server software in order to work.

As far as 'nasa.gov' not working, if you lookup www.nasa.gov, you'll see that it's a CNAME for 'www.nasa.gov.speedera.net', which is a CDN (geographic caching, etc), if you look up the specifics of CNAME, you'll see that the root (@) record of a domain ('nasa.gov' in this case) cannot be a CNAME since other records must be present on that name (MX, SOA, etc..).. They can't point @ to an IP because that would ruin the point of having a CDN, and I'm assuming .gov addresses aren't allowed to be hosted (authoritatively) on a CDNs anycast DNS network.

An easy way for them to fix it would be to point the A record for 'nasa.gov' to some local web server that simply rewrites 'nasa.gov' to 'www.nasa.gov'. Although, it is NASA, so that would probably somehow cost $50 million and take 3 years.

Whoa, I wrote more than I meant to there..

[–]Cynical_Walrus 2 points3 points ago

I think my brain just force-restarted. Sorry.

[–]vitalysh 1 point2 points ago

Wouldn't be easier to just cname nasa.gov to www.nasa.gov?

[–]suddenlyreddit 1 point2 points ago

No. You can't CNAME a root, or at least you are not supposed to. toebox mentions the correct method, CNAME for a host within the DNS domain.

As someone who does far to much of this, you would be VERY surprised just how many domains have this very issue, where "www" and the A record for the root of the domain do not match. That being said, I appreciate a good image gif laugh.

Also to toebox, great explanation!

[–]007T 0 points1 point ago

It works fine for me, I guess this is my new test to figure out who is using IE or Chrome.

[–]TheKesselRun 1 point2 points ago

It shouldn't work in any browser. There is no website at http://nasa.gov and the URL does not redirect to http://www.nasa.gov.

[–]007T -1 points0 points ago

Just another reason I prefer Firefox.

[–]TheKesselRun 2 points3 points ago

The only real difference is that Chrome asks you "did you mean www.nasa.gov" and Firefox just assumes that is what you meant and redirects you. I agree with you that Firefox's behaviour is preferred in this situation.

[–]pistonhonda 3 points4 points ago

Then Google "NASA", not "www.nasa.gov".

[–]starphish 0 points1 point ago

I never knew that you needed www in front of nasa.gov until today. Is this common knowledge?

[–]TheKesselRun 2 points3 points ago

Apparently they may eventually make the switch. http://wiki.nasa.gov/cm/blog/nasadotgov/posts/post_1306860816073.html

[–]shotacatscandyshack 5 points6 points ago

I still catch myself doing it from time to time. Subconsciously, I'm still inquiring to AskJeeves and talking about fucking nothing at all on AIM 2.0.. Ah, the good ole days..

[–]taelyn 2 points3 points ago

Happened to me earlier in my physical science lecture. First he opened up IE, went to www.wikipedia.com, clicked "english", then typed in whatever he was searching for in the search box. Eugh.

[–]ContentKeanu 2 points3 points ago

Welcome to the life of a One to One trainer at the Apple Store...

"How do I close it!?"

"Do you see the red button in the upper left?"

Heavily struggles whilst moving mouse to upper right and squinting like a madman

Silently dying on the inside

[–]asldkfououhe 0 points1 point ago

who gives a shit? stop caring and leave people alone

[–]alexispres 1 point2 points ago

[–]jimjamwood 0 points1 point ago

Being a P.A some of the exec guys I work for do this A LOT and this is exactly how I feel!!

[–]ApolloArrow 0 points1 point ago

I have witnessed some of my friends doing this. It is painful.

[–]blackami 1 point2 points ago

i missread the subject and found it funnier than the origial post, couse once i did let my boss type www in my browser's address bar. i should not have visited those sites from office :)

[–]CharlestonChewbacca -1 points0 points ago

Or when someone types www at all.

[–]mackhole 1 point2 points ago

Just yesterday I had the same reaction when I watched my new boss try to delete a file using backspace. Twice.

[–]TheRyathe 0 points1 point ago

I can not upvote this enough.

[–]fknRAIDEN 0 points1 point ago

i think this works for the address bar too.

[–]beergoggles69 0 points1 point ago

When you're watching TV and they say www when promoting a website. Shits me. People know by now what a website is without hearing the www.

[–]ruuustin 0 points1 point ago

If you ever see me start typing "www" it's because I forgot what url I was trying to type and need a second to remember.

[–]turdknuckle 1 point2 points ago

You know what else I hate? When someone is telling you a URL, and they start by saying "W W W", and then they wait for you to type it in before giving you the rest of the address!

[–]Yiemchun 0 points1 point ago

Kind of annoying when this gif is misused.

[–]beltorak 0 points1 point ago

I do that sometimes if I am not sure of the site. Or if I am not sure of the spelling. Helps bypass embarrassing moments at work, although nowadays you are more likely to land on a bland parked ad site than you are to get some bewbies in yer face.

[–]R99 -1 points0 points ago

When people even type www. I facepalm

[–]Stankia 0 points1 point ago

How do these people even become Bosses?

[–]Draiko 0 points1 point ago

I get that way when people don't use ctrl+enter.

[–]spartacus- 0 points1 point ago

wwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww

[–]KejiKotaro 0 points1 point ago

What film or series is this from?

[–]cosmicr 0 points1 point ago

I think it might be firefly?

[–]buttplugpeddler 0 points1 point ago

No offense, but this is honestly the first gif I ever saw too many times.

[–]BenHalp 0 points1 point ago

My History teacher, who some would call a "dinosaur", used his bing search bar to bing google. He then proceeded to google search google.com, and then searched for his query.

[–]Mcfuggit 0 points1 point ago

I google so much that I do this sometimes on accident. I look up and catch myself, but just continue since it's basically the same thing and would in fact take longer if I restarted typing in the address bar.

[–]crichton101 0 points1 point ago

my brother does this ALL THE FREAKING TIME. Doesn't matter how many times I tell him you don't have to do it, he continues to do it.

[–]bobmillahhh 0 points1 point ago

Both of my parents go to a search engine to find youtube... it drives me up a fucking wall.

[–]sh2248 0 points1 point ago

My brother freaks out when I do it. I just don't understand why people get so bothered. It just takes literally 3 seconds.

[–]cosmicr 0 points1 point ago

heh, all these posts about how you don't need to type in www anymore, but I start with that reaction for the autocomplete... god knows what sites I've been visiting I don't want anyone to see...

[–]NathanDahlin 0 points1 point ago

I'll just leave this here.

[–]RiverwoodHood 0 points1 point ago

bloody brilliant. 10/10.

[–]grandfatha 0 points1 point ago

Could be a test to find out whehter you have the character to say something.

[–]HYPERNATURL 0 points1 point ago

"double-you, double-you, double-you dot winnerorwiener.com"

[–]mage_g4 0 points1 point ago

Mine goes to google, and then types the web address in the search bar (including the .com bit). Naturally, it comes up first in the search and she clicks it from there. I haven't bothered telling her she could have just put the URL in the fucking URL bar where it belongs.

[–]oh_i_see 0 points1 point ago

Seeing as you are watching they dont want you to risk seeing anything in the autocomplete... that could be embarasing

[–]choc_is_back 0 points1 point ago

Best use of this gif so far!

Similar: people not realizing that the top bar in Chrome actually does a google search. So they type 'google', then select Google.com from the op results, and then type their query in there.

[–]sn0r 0 points1 point ago

I type in the first available field after i tab and fuck you if you have a problem with that you fucking internet noob. I was fondling computers from 1984 onwards so I'll be darned if anyone tells me not to fucking type something in a browser field if i'm in a fucking hurry.

signed,

your boss

[–]Mofrosho 1 point2 points ago

Or when they use the start button to open a frequently used program instead of making a shortcut

[–]PDK01 1 point2 points ago

I dunno, I prefer two single-clicks to one double-click.

[–]Mofrosho 0 points1 point ago

Really? There's so much time saved with a shortcut though, and you don't have to wade through that gigantic list of programs on your hard drive. Just me? Ok.

[–]PDK01 7 points8 points ago

Well, the frequently-used ones are pinned to the top of the list so I'm not wading through anything ;)

[–]R99 1 point2 points ago

Or pin it to the taskbar, one click.

[–]BrianFlanagan 1 point2 points ago

My dad goes to google to search youtube. Truestory.jpg

[–][deleted] -5 points-4 points ago

Another one is whenever someone says "ki-loh-meter", but that's technically correct, and better than using furlongs or something I guess.

[–]JCongo 2 points3 points ago
