top 200 commentsshow 500

[–]fizdup 83 points84 points ago

If you actually want to know about this, can I suggest one of the most informative BBC radio 4 shows ever? It's called In our Time. They get experts in the field to come in for an hour long discussion about a topic. They did Hadrian's Wall a few weeks ago .

This really is an amazing show. They cover loads of science. The episode about the Moon was very good. And the entire back catalogue of hundreds of shows is available here.

[–]Phil_McManis 16 points17 points ago

That show seems to always pick topics that are fascinating to me. They've covered history, philosophy, science, and some random ones like one on Game Theory. In Our Time takes even random, small historical figures and makes them wicked interesting. Definitely one of the best podcasts out there for education.

[–]fizdup 15 points16 points ago

I have just moved to Peru from the UK and I don't speak much Spanish (pop trivia for you, they don't call it Espanol down here, they call it Castilliano) so being able to download all of In Our Time has been a godsend.

[–]JB_UK 1 point2 points ago

In Our Time is an excellent series, but imo they're much better for humanities subjects (history, philosophy, culture, religion) than for sciences. The show works well because the presenter, Melvyn Bragg, actively moderates and drives along the debates, but that only really works where the subject is easily accessible enough that an amateur can know what are the appropriate questions to ask. The science episodes always remind me a little of the famous 'How do magnets work?' Feynman clip.

[–]korneel 244 points245 points ago

It's interesting that the Roman approach was:

  • Conquer, civilize.
  • Conquer, civilize.
  • Conquer, civilize.
  • Conquer, errr.... let's build a wall.

[–]nipuL 19 points20 points ago

Ok, now we have a wall. Everyone on that side is crazy.

[–]Caledonian_Scot 148 points149 points ago

Just couldn't handle the Scots!

[–]Walletfullofpennies 101 points102 points ago

Nope, same reason they didn't conquer all of Germania. A too spread out population that simply wasn't cost effective to conquer, with no real material value (I.E. a big ol' city with lots of loot to siege).

[–]croutonicus 19 points20 points ago

It reminds me of the second gulf war. They easily had the resources to destroy an army that gets sent against them in a really short period of time, but trying to keep control of guerilla forces who don't want you there is very difficult.

[–]Walletfullofpennies 22 points23 points ago

That is true, although the thing about the Romans is that if you have something they want the do not give up, if there was a couple thousand kilo's of gold under modern day Edinburgh, you can be damn certain that it would have become the second City of London. And the funniest thing is, in one-two generations I'll bet more Scots would've been speaking Latin than not.

[–]anonymous1 14 points15 points ago

Latin or not . . . it would still be bloody hard to understand what they said.

[–]MakeLikeATreeAndGo 46 points47 points ago

Get your history out of the way of our cultural stereotypes. It was the awful Scottish.

[–]live3orfry 1 point2 points ago

Scottish Picts.

FTFY

[–]Mr_James119 2 points3 points ago

Actually, I think it was that the emperors after Augustus started to get worse and worse, you can notice the roman military by the third century was starting to fall apart where legions only existed on paper and what not. I think if the Romans had decent emperors and had maintained their military they probably could have conquered the world.

[–]Shadrack579 8 points9 points ago

In what ways do you think they were worse? Vespasian was by all accounts a good Emporer, both in aspects of military competence and social policy. The five good Emperors that followed Domitian's reign were, like their name suggests, all very capable rulers. Trajan saw the Roman empire expanded to its furthest boarders during his rule. I don't think there's much support for your overly broad post.

[–]Fuqwon 24 points25 points ago

Back then, would it have even been the Scots? Wouldn't it have been tribes like the Celts and Picts?

[–]buckie33 30 points31 points ago

Yep, both would eventually united and rebrand themselves as Scots.

[–]omgoffensiveguy 1 point2 points ago

At that exact point in time, too, funnily enough; because the Roman's met Clan Scott and thought their clan name was the name of their peoples.

[–]mister_pants 15 points16 points ago

The empire Pict its battles carefully while Roman through Europe.

[–]dirdiddler 4 points5 points ago

But.. the... when.. Brythonic, oh man - I'm terrible at this.

[–]knaak 8 points9 points ago

I believe Picts at that time.

[–]omgoffensiveguy 1 point2 points ago

Incorrect. The Roman's were introduced to them as Scotts as that was the CLAN they met, and forever more they were named Scots.

[–]Pretesauce 5 points6 points ago

Didn't even attempt the irish! Us celts aren't to be trifled with!

[–]Xmaspast 19 points20 points ago

Leaving us to embrace Christianity on our own and what not.

[–]Ajdiv 5 points6 points ago

Us celts aren't to be trifled with!

Julius Caesar might have something to say about that.

[–]wow_great_name 2 points3 points ago

Yeah those soft Italian boys took one look at cold wet Ireland and noped the fuck out of there. Sandals and mud do not go well together.

[–]asdfghjkl124 4 points5 points ago

Actually the celts were conquered by the Romans. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Celts

[–]Lurks_And_Votes 19 points20 points ago

The problem with the term "Celt" to identify someone is that it's so broad. It's like saying "Native American" - both are blanket terms for relatively similar groups of peoples, rather than one specific people or empire. The Gaels are Celts, but the fact that the Gauls fell to Roman expansion has no bearing on whether the Gaels did.

[–]raindogmx 9 points10 points ago

More like Conquer, assimilate....

[–]Sad_Mute 0 points1 point ago

There is no doubting that the Roman way of life with their technology, education and infrastructure was superior to everyone they conquered.

[–]raindogmx 5 points6 points ago

Agree, but they did excel at absorbing and integrating conquered peoples' culture.

[–]Sad_Mute 2 points3 points ago

That is one of the reasons they lasted as long as they did.

[–]raindogmx 4 points5 points ago

And I have this personal theory that they live on. They gave away all territory, culture and religion and became the church. It's like transhumanism for cultures, they uploaded to the matrix.

But that's just stoner theories....

[–]Skyrim_Enthusiast 2 points3 points ago

By that logic, you could almost say ancient civilizations that started math and science live on in science and mathematics institutes.

Not saying you're wrong, just saying it's interesting.

[–]raindogmx 2 points3 points ago

Absolutely. It's just that I suspect Romans really did do it consciously. I kind of believe Constantine the Great was aware of it through his reign and in his deathbed.

[–]Skyrim_Enthusiast 2 points3 points ago

Oh, no arguing that. I was just thinking about how the Mesopotamian society did the same thing: they kept getting taken over, but the people remained and eventually everything was back to normal and it was all "Mesopotamian" again.

[–]forsbergisgod 2 points3 points ago

Who is they? If they means "Romans " you are assuming that "Romans " think and act alike as one body which is patently false. The Roman empire was a heterogeneous mixture of peoples and nations and by very definition could never act as one. Interesting theory but its really nothing more than i would expect from the history channel aliens guy

[–]raindogmx 0 points1 point ago

No, I think that's exactly my point. Romans had no identity and they didn't care. The less they cared the bigger they got. Finally they (the Romans in power) understood that territory and identity are meaningless and when all was lost there was a plan to fade into the western culture. I think Constantine was a visionary in that way, and he probably inherited the vision from rulers before him.

Take Armenians for example, part of their national culture includes being the first Christian state. They have fought for it. But Romans, they knew when to drop culture in favour of territory, and at then end, drop territory in favour of a larger vision.

To me it is no coincidence that the Catholic church, which practically held all the power over Europe during the middle ages is still based in Rome. Damn, they got the dream, tax and rule without civil responsibility.

It's no conspiracy theory, really. I'm not wearing a tin foil hat, it's just the way I think the Roman culture evolved and I am making no judgements. It's just layman stuff and I did say it's just "stoner theories". I claim nothing.

[–]sje46 2 points3 points ago

I would agree with you that the average roman cared less the bigger it got. To suggest that they understood that territory and identity are meaningless is too radical for me to accept. It's certainly not true of the establishment...the emperors didn't want to give up all that territory. Neither did they want to give up their culture so much as the culture just naturally changed. It was the peasants and soldiers who converted to Christianity before the Emperors and Senators. Wasn't a top-down thing, I'm saying. It wasn't as though the whole empire decided to change their outlook on life. It was just that culture, being culture, naturally changes over time. You could say that the spirit of the old Roman state survived in the Catholic Church to an extent.

[–]sje46 2 points3 points ago

education

Wasn't the Roman education system actually completely idiotic? Remembering hearing they only had three classes, and they did fucking everything by rote. Rhetoric class didn't discuss actual argumentation skills, but only word choice. Math class only taught basic arithmetic, which they did day in and day out...nothing more advanced. Same with reading class I heard.

Either way, they didn't have classes where they read poets/writers, or write, or learn about the physical world around them, or learn philosophy, or anything like that. It was pretty subpar education , even for ancient times. Greece had a much better education system.

[–]Sad_Mute 6 points7 points ago

I meant education to mean that they had a greater pool of knowledge and resources to learn things rather than their education system, which was superior to the absent systems in many placed they conquered.

[–]tastyboner 9 points10 points ago

What is this? A wall for ants? It needs to be at least three times bigger!

[–]WannabeBodyBuilder 4 points5 points ago

You stole that from Frankie Boyle.

[–]Junaid-Sennin 30 points31 points ago

Stardust anyone?

[–]coreyjro 15 points16 points ago

Underrated movie. It got me to read Neil Gaiman, who is awesome.

[–]GoneFishing36 7 points8 points ago

I you haven't watched it, Stardust was a fantastic adventure/love/comedy movie.

Edit: Amazon has it for 2,99 rental. LINK. Go check it out now.

[–]HexagonalClosePacked 11 points12 points ago

Everyone who I recommend that movie to is skeptical about it at first, but every single one of them has loved it. It really does have something for everybody. It's the Princess Bride of the 21st century!

[–]ProximaC 376 points377 points ago

If you ever get out, find that spot. In the base of that wall you'll find a rock that has no earthly business in a Maine hayfield. A piece of black volcanic glass. You'll find something buried under it I want you to have.

[–]bitparity 131 points132 points ago

"Do you remember the name of the town?"

"...AW CRAP"

[–]peacecake 58 points59 points ago

Zihuatanejo

[–]zeamaize 10 points11 points ago

Zi whata what now?

In Mexico, just fly in. Now get busy livin' or get busy dyin'

[–]opfgt 12 points13 points ago

Stary Sobor

[–]a_simple_lampoon 5 points6 points ago

Right!!? I felt so bad for ol' elderly Red in that nanosecond.

[–]squidgy 14 points15 points ago

Actually, at that exact spot there is a rock (well, concrete block) that has no earthly business being there. I believe it marks the highest point on the Wall...

It's also in the middle of a sheep pasture. Watch your step.

[–]rewere3 42 points43 points ago

I've been in here for 25 years. That whole area could be a Walmart by now.

[–]whytep 5 points6 points ago

Dragon glass?

[–]__Rainbow_Dash__ 8 points9 points ago

Just when I thought I was gonna have an original comment.

[–]Jameschimney 20 points21 points ago

You know nothing.

[–]Skyrim_Enthusiast 17 points18 points ago

Jon Snow.

[–]commonplatypus 3 points4 points ago

Hodor!

[–]Peregrine7 0 points1 point ago

Stop Hodoring!

[–]_Harrow_ 170 points171 points ago

THAT'll stop those barbarians!

[–]rasputine 166 points167 points ago

The wall was really quit a lot higher than this, it's just now mostly underground.

[–]TeaDrinkingBarbarian 155 points156 points ago

Also, ALOT of the stone from the wall was scavenged to make nearby buildings.

Oh, and the wall was never intended to keep the Scots out, per se, more to keep track of their movement over the border so they could be taxed.

[–]theresaviking 160 points161 points ago

Heh, the Romans weren't stupid then thinkin a wee wall could hold us back. But they were stupid thinkin they could get money off a scotsman!

[–]starfighter23 182 points183 points ago

Heh, they Romans wurnae stupit in hinkin a wee wa kid haud us back. But they wur stupit in hinkin they kid git money aff a scoatsman!

[–]bialyorzel01 21 points22 points ago

slow clap

[–]choosyman 15 points16 points ago

Golf clap?

[–]TheSecretMe 3 points4 points ago

Too much Pratchett. Now I'm just picturing Feegles picking up that entire wall and moving it back whenever they wanted to get somewhere beyond that wall.

[–]homeless_man_jogging 0 points1 point ago

I'm sure you're just joking around but I hate it when my fellow Scots on Facebook write in their accent. Fucking annoying.

[–]esw116 7 points8 points ago

Stupid wouldn't be the word I would use, since Hadrian was one of the most effective rulers in the entire history of the Roman empire.

[–]docious 7 points8 points ago

Source: Western Civ.

[–]CLSmith15 4 points5 points ago

Also given the Romans' propensity to overthrowing their own government, Hadrian thought it was a good idea to keep the soldiers busy building walls up in Britain.

[–]Kelsomatic 13 points14 points ago

*a lot

[–]TeaDrinkingBarbarian 9 points10 points ago

Oh sure, "alot" bothers you but "quit a lot higher" doesn't -_-

[–]CoyoteStark 12 points13 points ago

Hipster Romans.

[–]Wabbstarful 1 point2 points ago

Used to be one of the greatest walls ever, what with those trenches and such. You know what I'm talking about. ;)

[–]aDumbGorilla 9 points10 points ago

It used to be about 14ft high back when the Romans actually needed it.

[–]Omder 8 points9 points ago

I remember my history professor saying that it was less to keep them out and more to actually stop them from carrying livestock back over.

[–]TheSecretMe 2 points3 points ago

The interesting thing about life stock is that it can come apart into tasty pieces that can be carried just fine.

[–]I_Reference_Simpsons 6 points7 points ago

That should do it!

What is this!? A wall for ants!?!!?!

[–]Caledonian_Scot 1 point2 points ago

Hawl! It's Scots or Picts! Less ae yer cheek!

[–]goosetrooper 22 points23 points ago

[–]kshitijmd0 94 points95 points ago

The Wall in Game of Thrones is based on this wall.

[–]SouthPads 48 points49 points ago

Westeros is just a wonky Great Britain

[–]bioshockd 36 points37 points ago

With a dash of moorish Spain in the south

[–]croutonicus 16 points17 points ago

And oriental lands in the east, and Africa far further south.

[–]tbkd23 6 points7 points ago

There is nothing oriental in Westeros. you're thinking of the eastern continent, Essos

[–]croutonicus 10 points11 points ago

I didn't realise we were talkign exclusively about westeros, rather the Game of Thrones world as a whole.

[–]tbkd23 7 points8 points ago

In that case you're correct, although I always thought of Qarth as more of an Arabian type city, and Volantis to be more Indian

[–]croutonicus 6 points7 points ago

The shadow lands that border the jade sea are supposed to be the oreintal bit.

[–]topical_storm 16 points17 points ago

Has anybody mentioned the Dothraki are pretty much just Mongolians?

[–]generouscumshaw 8 points9 points ago

It is known.

[–]jmlinden7 8 points9 points ago

It's basically this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heptarchy and the Iron Throne is basically this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bretwalda

[–]simpledumb 6 points7 points ago

Huh, you're right. Even the geography is goofily similar, just horizontally flip Great Britain and cut off the north from Westeros.

Scotland's the Vale and the neck, Cornwall is Dorne, Wales is the Stormlands, Isle of Man is Dragonstone, and even Fucking London and Oldtown line up quite nicely. I knew GRRM based a lot of ASOIAF on European history, never noticed the similarity between maps though.

edit: apparently a lot of people on Tumblr figured this one out a long time ago. I'm a bit of a map nerd, so I'm surprised it took me this long.

[–]kcell 48 points49 points ago

It is known

[–]Razenghan 13 points14 points ago

You know nothing.

[–]SinThenStir 12 points13 points ago

Cool.

[–]goosetrooper 22 points23 points ago

Cool. Cool cool cool.

[–]xavier47 12 points13 points ago

there are many like it, but this one is his

[–]Frigorific 11 points12 points ago

Well, it does go all the way across Britain. Not many walls do that.

[–]goosetrooper 8 points9 points ago

It did go all the way across Britain, now only about 30 miles of wall are actually unearthed, intact, or still there.

[–]fintorro 41 points42 points ago

Before people scoff at the low height of the wall I'd like to point out that this was before the scots invented horses

[–]9mackenzie 19 points20 points ago

Most of the wall is underground or has had stones taken for other building projects.

Edit- only read the first sentence, so your sarcasm went entirely over my head. Lol.

[–]Azrail55555 32 points33 points ago

It's Hadrian's Wall?? I've been calling it "Adrian's Wall" all these years...

[–]ander594 71 points72 points ago

HHHHHHAAAAAADDDDRRRIIIIAAAANNNNN!!!!

[–]threpac 23 points24 points ago

Came for Rocky, was not disappointed

[–]PhilosopherAthlete 13 points14 points ago

Yep, his latin name was Hadrianus. However in greek it's Αδριανός (Adrianos). Go figure.

[–]Benning321 7 points8 points ago

Classics major here. Greek words that begin with vowels occasionally have a "rough breathing" at the beginning, it is pronounced as if there is an 'h' in front of the vowel.

Edit: So, the Romans stick an H in front for pronunciation.

[–]CatCollection 0 points1 point ago

Ancient Language major here. This guy is the real deal.

[–]sje46 3 points4 points ago

Actual Roman here.

Omnes quos noveram mortui sunt.

Mundus peregrinus formidulosusque locus est.

[–]BrownNote 3 points4 points ago

God, your major is so appealing yet so useless.

[–]Petrarch1603 4 points5 points ago

If it makes you feel better, the Adriatic Sea is named after the same Emperor. edit: nevermind looks like I'm wrong :(

[–]MightyMousePepTalk 2 points3 points ago

I thought it was named after the Etruscan settlement of Adria...

[–]Deccarrin 19 points20 points ago

I hiked this wall when i was 13. Amazing fun, the reason I decided to get fit too. That wall made me lose 4 stone, gain confidence, achieve everything I've ever wanted. And was the first time I got properly drunk. :) I love you wall.

[–]Meenkus 6 points7 points ago

I giggle when people measure weight in 'stones' because all I can think about is you dropping one of these rocks off every hundred miles of hiking.

[–]guggabump 11 points12 points ago

The famous tree from Robin Hood (the Kevin Costner version) is along Hadrian's wall.

[–]goosetrooper 6 points7 points ago

Yeah it is. (Picture taken from the goPro that I put on my backpack.)

[–]TeaDrinkingBarbarian 4 points5 points ago

Fun fact, I know the guy who's land you walked over to get to that tree

[–]hudsonshell 2 points3 points ago

Who is he (vaguely) and how long has his family laid claim on that tract?

/interestedguywhoknowsnothingofscottishhistory

[–]PComotose 3 points4 points ago

I hadn't ever heard of them before. What did you think of the equipment? Any comments on how well it worked? Anything you'd do differently next time? (Think of your reply as a 1 comment AMA [grin]).

[–]Ross9795 12 points13 points ago

I live like 20 miles from there :D

[–]Geordielass 5 points6 points ago

I'm from Wallsend, pretty cool to go into the local park and seeing some of the ruins there.

[–]Sulasi 0 points1 point ago

where is "there"?

[–]skillgannon5 5 points6 points ago

Well the Italians of old knew how to build them to last huh.

[–]Semajal 6 points7 points ago

Hooray for HDR done well :D

[–]rasputine 1 point2 points ago

Apparently very well, I can't even tell that it's HDRed.

[–]Semajal 3 points4 points ago

The dynamic range gives it away, shooting into a sunset would either burn out the sky to get the foreground exposed or have the foreground dark with the sky exposed. But yeah proper HDR is subtle and just provides a more lifelike view. Not the best photos but this http://www.flickr.com/photos/32568076@N06/5700447425/in/set-72157625419838358/ is non HDR, then the image to the right is an HDR of the same scene. Did these a while back though. The collection there is a bit of a mix as in some shots I wanted to try and make it look unrealistic for effect.

[–]spangg 1 point2 points ago

Could be a DRI.

[–]CoyoteStark 5 points6 points ago

Some people say this marks the northern expansion of the Roman Empire. Some people say it was used to keep out the northern invaders. Some people say it was used to stop zombies. Some people are stupid.

[–]maeji 16 points17 points ago

China ain't got shit on Hadrian.

[–]MorbidandCreepifying 1 point2 points ago

I hate this wall. I loathe it Purely because my Medieval Monasticism and Chivalry teacher gave me shit in a paper for describing it as a "border." WHAT WALL ISN'T A BORDER YOU p.O.s.? I kid you not, the next class he used the term "border" to describe Hadrian's Wall. F7U12!

It's nothing personal, H. Wall, you are sadly associated with that professor of "No one can get an 'A' unless they write everything about the topic even though I assign word limits." My apologies but you are forever ruined for me.

[–]QuasarsRcool 3 points4 points ago

Anyone have a 1920 by 1080?

[–]Zmodem 11 points12 points ago

Okay, decided to go ahead and do it myself: ENJOY!

[–]the_codfather 2 points3 points ago

For those who don't know, that wall was built by Emperor Hadrian to separate the Roman Empire from the barbarians i.e. us Scots!

[–]pikeybastard 3 points4 points ago

I was told by a friend of mine what is a historian that the wall was largely intact (aka actually big enough to keep people from crossing the border at will with the smallest of hops) until the 17th century, when people started nicking bits for housing. Even in the 20th century people saw it as a way of getting cheap stone. If only English heritage had existed then. Actually maybe not, as half of their buildings are in 'managed decline'. Still, shame people ruined something nice.

[–]B12Mega 1 point2 points ago

This was posted at another site by not me, but it's so great that I thought I'd share it here:

* LWelsch's diary :: ::

The border consisted of two barbed wire fences separated by about a hundred yards. There were machine gun nests in towers on the Czech side of the border. I was told by my relatives that land mines were in the area between the two fences. Despite all that, people crossed. I couldn't believe the sight, yet the sight is burned into my memory.

The fences, towers and all that are gone now. I cannot help but think of Robert Frost's poem Mending Wall.

MENDING WALL

Something there is that doesn't love a wall,
That sends the frozen-ground-swell under it,
And spills the upper boulders in the sun,
And makes gaps even two can pass abreast.
The work of hunters is another thing:
I have come after them and made repair
Where they have left not one stone on a stone,
But they would have the rabbit out of hiding,
To please the yelping dogs. The gaps I mean,
No one has seen them made or heard them made,
But at spring mending-time we find them there.
I let my neighbor know beyond the hill;
And on a day we meet to walk the line
And set the wall between us once again.
We keep the wall between us as we go.
To each the boulders that have fallen to each.
And some are loaves and some so nearly balls
We have to use a spell to make them balance:
'Stay where you are until our backs are turned!'
We wear our fingers rough with handling them.
Oh, just another kind of out-door game,
One on a side. It comes to little more:
There where it is we do not need the wall:
He is all pine and I am apple orchard.
My apple trees will never get across
And eat the cones under his pines, I tell him.
He only says, 'Good fences make good neighbors'.
Spring is the mischief in me, and I wonder
If I could put a notion in his head:
'Why do they make good neighbors? Isn't it
Where there are cows?
But here there are no cows.
Before I built a wall I'd ask to know
What I was walling in or walling out,
And to whom I was like to give offense.
Something there is that doesn't love a wall,
That wants it down.' I could say '.Elves' to him,
But it's not elves exactly, and I'd rather
He said it for himself. I see him there
Bringing a stone grasped firmly by the top
In each hand, like an old-stone savage armed.
He moves in darkness as it seems to me
Not of woods only and the shade of trees.
He will not go behind his father's saying,
And he likes having thought of it so well
He says again, "Good fences make good neighbors."

I live about 6 miles from the wall, ask me anything :)

[–]salmonfin 16 points17 points ago

Whats it like living 6 miles from Hadrians wall?

[–]Spamsational 7 points8 points ago

Fun fact: It's the inspiration for 'the Wall' in Game of Thrones.

[–]zisthewaytobe 5 points6 points ago

It's nice and all, but it's no Antonine wall....

[–]NotBaldwin 2 points3 points ago

I walked the whole length of the wall two summers ago, with my father, grandfather and uncle. Quite the epic male bonding experience that I will never forget.

[–]Massif_centrale 1 point2 points ago

It has roman graffiti on it somewhere, I remember laughing at it on a school trip. It's a penis btw

[–]snsiman 2 points3 points ago

Ahhh, looks like the DAoC that I once remembered.

[–]WASH_YOUR_VAGINA 0 points1 point ago

I'm Scottish, therefore I feel no fear when I say "Suck it, Romans!"

[–]rfranke727 1 point2 points ago

thank you for new desktop background

[–]MrBogantilla 2 points3 points ago

My family's name comes from this beautiful wall. We were Anglo-Saxons who lived near the wall.

[–]8002reverse 2 points3 points ago

Not much of the wall left. Interactive map

[–]grinnage4 6 points7 points ago

as a sophomore in art school, i upvoted because not only is it a beautiful photo, but also i know who hadrian is!

[–]GET_THE_BROOMS 2 points3 points ago

i downvoted cuz you thought going to art school was a good idea

[–]rozyhammer[S] 2 points3 points ago

beyond rude!

[–]grinnage4 4 points5 points ago

ouch!!! i'm actually not a typical art student... i'm a 29 year old full time hairdresser going back to school because since my husband works for the state i get a tuition break. i'm getting a degree in art education and am thinking of working with sick kids at hospitals... actually...

[–]Renuo 1 point2 points ago

A few thousand years later and there's still no pacifying those Scotts!

[–]Hadrians_wall 2 points3 points ago

What can I say, I'm extremely photogenic.

[–]asdfghjkl124 1 point2 points ago

Very cool to see this after reading about it. Not how I thought it would look but awesome none the less.

[–]Maffers 1 point2 points ago

Cor! That's pretty.

[–]tronn4 0 points1 point ago

Isn't that where Red got a box full of money?

[–]coreysmoo 0 points1 point ago

"This is my land and my tree. So whatever's in it also belongs to me."

[–]Lepke 0 points1 point ago

Pfft, all the real action was in Emain.

[–]PComotose 0 points1 point ago

I walked the Hadrian's Wall Path from Newcastle to Bowness-on-Solway a few years ago and took tons of pictures. None were anywhere near this good! Thanks for posting it.

[–]1Ender -1 points0 points ago

So how would this wall actually stop people from crossing. Was scotland full of midgets or was the wall bigger back then?

[–]JB_UK 1 point2 points ago

All the towns around are suspiciously built of similar looking stone. It was bigger 2000 years ago.

[–]Chaerea37 0 points1 point ago

thanks for the beautiful picture. I plan to visit there someday

[–]iToastNinja 1 point2 points ago

My name is Hadrian! :D

[–]fknRAIDEN 0 points1 point ago

My name is adrian, i approve of this wall.

[–]hackeysack09 1 point2 points ago

Makes you proud to be named Adrian.

[–]grapevine11 0 points1 point ago

Just read about this in National Geographic

[–]ddx98 0 points1 point ago

hello new desktop

[–]horus2979 1 point2 points ago

Yo, Hadrian!

[–]nite_hm 0 points1 point ago

great setting, awesome pic!

[–]darren199314 1 point2 points ago

Places like this make me love living in the North-East.

[–]Effinawsum -1 points0 points ago

Look for a piece of black volcanic glass. If you steal the money hidden under it, Red can go back to work at the grocery store.

[–]Root-Germanicus 1 point2 points ago

The Roman Empire, bitch.

[–]kantorekB14 1 point2 points ago

I live near a segment of Hadrian's wall, every time I've visited it's been pissing it down. I got two fake Roman coins though, so it's not all bad.

[–]aroboticsoul 1 point2 points ago

So many upvotes. I once took a trip to Scotland / Northern England for the sole purpose of seeing Hadrian's Wall... which most likely is the result of a childhood spent reading way too many Prince Valiant comic books.

[–]CerealJello 1 point2 points ago

How is this supposed to stop the wildings?!

[–]CummingEverywhere 1 point2 points ago

I've walked along that wall. Not the whole way, I didn't really feel like walking all the way across England. I was on holiday in Northumberland at the time.

[–]chin_in_da_phonebook 1 point2 points ago

Stardust

[–]Ambarenya 0 points1 point ago

Been there!

[–]the_blackfish 1 point2 points ago

Upon discovering this, the Picts said, "WELL, this is clearly someone else's property, let's go fuck off back north."

[–]random314 1 point2 points ago

Some said building this wall marked the start of the fall of Rome. Because Rome is a country whose economy's backbone is conquering and plundering.

[–]purplebowl 0 points1 point ago

Someday I'd like to saddle up a horse and ride through this land spending quiet nights under the stars, soaking in the sun and filling my lungs with this glorious air... this is a beautiful picture I must say

[–]bpmf 1 point2 points ago

"Emperor Antoninus - tear down this wall! ...or simply neglect it until it falls apart" Ronald of Reagan 139

[–]PoorlyWordedUsername 0 points1 point ago

It's just crazy to think this was a wall they built on the northern border of the Roman Empire.... across the middle of present-day England! "Holy Roman Empire, Batman!" Wait, no, wrong time period.

[–]mearvk 0 points1 point ago

This might not even keep the invading cats out.

[–]Toodlum 0 points1 point ago

Reminds me of Robert Frost's "Mending Wall".

[–]thegreatestjose 1 point2 points ago

Clicked for the photo, stayed for the history lessons. I may never leave this place.

[–]cleverseneca 0 points1 point ago

I've always been more of a Limes Germanicus fan, but thats probably cause I grew up in that area.
