This was actually in Brazil, not Mexico. As far as I remember, some gangster's brother got murdered and this guy was suspected to be responsible. Gangster had him murdered in this manner, allegedly one knife for each year in the life of his brother.

Well if I think about it, it's not really bad, it's just a new feeling to me. It has advantages, especially since I'm in the military, but it's just different for me.

I had kind of reached that point one time, then I saw a picture that kind of moved me.

It was a guy in a middle eastern country, he was dressed fairly nice (slacks, button up shirt, leather jacket) that was hanging in the middle of a village square. You could even see the gold watch he was wearing in the picture.

And as I looked at it, this odd thought came over my mind. You could tell by looking at the picture that he didn't expect this to happen when he got up this morning. I just started thinking about how his day must have been, from getting out of bed, brushing his teeth and getting a shower, getting dressed, leaving the house... and then what did he do. What would spark a crowd to hang him and leave him hanging.

And since then, I start asking these weird questions as I see these types of pictures.

When I was about 8 or 9, and we had first gotten to the Philippines, and it was in our first week of living off base, there was an execution about a block from where we had lived. This was when Marcos was in power, and marshal law presided.

The local police had a man, and took him to a corner, shouted out some proclamation and then shot him in the head. He crumpled to the ground. There were a lot of people crowded around (probably 100-200), and the entire thing from when they got to the corner to when he was dead took maybe 2 minutes?

As a young child, my main thought was "you do not want to mess up here". But I've often wondered if that incident has had any effect on me long term, and how I view things, how I react.

I would imagine that would have long term effects, not necessarily bad though. I would think if I were to see that at such a young age, I would be even more caring towards people and their well being.

Well, I was for a while. But then when you get on something like Reddit, and you see all of these teen-aged trolls, you start to think that people (in the US anyhow) pretty much have earned the position they are in. That your compassion factor really goes down, when you see people who act the way so many do on reddit. Another thing. Most of the last half of last year, and the first half of this year, I was spending about $500/mo (usually at the rate of $125/wk) helping people in need in r/assistance. I learned something major from that; people are ingrateful. You make a 40 mile trip to wire someone a hundred bucks, and their reply is "hey - thanks", and that is it. They don't bother with an update, they don't ever holler hi, and they often ask for more. The people locally that I have helped (longer term) usually ends up a pretty unsatisfactory event as well. In truth, I am appalled by the behavior of Americans on a daily basis. The Philippino people were much more to my liking. :)

I still do horse and dog rescue, and have much compassion for them. I find animal rescue to be much more enjoyable to me than people rescue.
