Holy mother of god. Nostalgia'd so hard, I completely forgot I had one of these!

[–]ClimbingC 22 points23 points ago

I too had forgot about those! Were they not all nursery rhymes? Any recordings out there?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uTHwwbWDg5g

[–]laylatov 2 points3 points ago

omg! I also totally forgot I had one, listening to that brought back memories, just wow.

[–]ben174 0 points1 point ago

Tons of free karma to whoever posts this at /r/asmr

[–]starbuxed 3 points4 points ago

Me too, I loved mine. Now I feel old.

[–]Guinness_or_thirsty 2 points3 points ago

Of all the nostalgic things I've seen on the front page lately, this one tops the list. Good god this was magical when I was a kid.

[–]Fourgot 5 points6 points ago

All of these things

[–]IronOhki 0 points1 point ago

All of the words you just said.

[–]AndrewGeorge81 0 points1 point ago

I forgot i had one of those too. How funny

[–]feelinsinister 0 points1 point ago

Damn, I do too! Still got them rotting away somewhere...

[–]stoneypants 1 point2 points ago

haha I did the same exact thing! I remember pushing the records along to make it play faster.

[–]NotBatman374 1 point2 points ago

Nostalgia'd so hard, i remembered lambchop.

[–]Inframan63 0 points1 point ago

Nostalgia'd so hard I'm in a fetal position... ' London bridge... falling down... down (shiver) fallin'...Mommy? I wana bawony samich Mommy!'

I think I just felt my Midlife Crisis hopscotch across my grave and my hairline recede 9.7 mm simultaneously.

[–]likeBruceSpringsteen[S] 0 points1 point ago

Dude. Because you're the top comment, I'll say this here. I posted this 5 days ago, just before I packed up the family for an epic camping trip out in the middle of nowhere. No cell service, whatsoever. To my surprise, I roll into town and figure, "Hey, I'll check out Reddit and see what's up!" Not only did I make the front page for the second time ever, but Obama did a fucking IAMA?? What in the actual Fuck?! See why we can't leave? You're gone for a few days and you miss EVERYTHING!

[–]TomKappa 24 points25 points ago

Someone managed to decode the notes and milled his own "records". Here're the instructions

They also rewrote the instructions so anyone can 3D print their own records

It's a pretty neat read.

[–]budpickens 2 points3 points ago

Holy fucking shit. Mind. Blown. That was awesome! I have got to get a 3D printer.

[–]AMillionMonkeys 2 points3 points ago

Wait 10 years and your phone will have one built in.

[–]TomKappa 0 points1 point ago

You don't even need one! A company online called Shapeways will print stuff for you for a fee!

You could also try to find a hackerspace/makerspace near you and you might be able to print it on some nice local person's 3d printer.

[–]DJBell1986 18 points19 points ago

Fucking blasting "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" at all hours of the night.

[–]everynameistakenwtf 2 points3 points ago

I really did this last night on this record player to put my son to sleep. It worked.

[–]cookiefiend1228 0 points1 point ago

My 3 year old plays with my old one all the time...

[–]buchliebhaberin 21 points22 points ago

I still have the one my family had when my brother was small. My kids played with it and I'm saving it for my grandchildren.

edit: unclear pronoun antecedent

[–]LiteralPhilosopher 5 points6 points ago

You get an upgoat for the most awesomely erudite "Edit:" text I've seen yet.

[–]akasan 10 points11 points ago

I had this exact toy (born 1975)!!!

[–]Nikittele 9 points10 points ago

I had this toy too! (born 1990)

Granted, it was stashed at my grandma's place so I have no idea how old it was.

[–]jbird123 0 points1 point ago

Exactly same here, born 1990 and one lived at my nans since well before me. Still lives there.

[–]azyzzbrah 3 points4 points ago

Another 1990-born person here who had one of these. It might have been one of my older sibling's first.

[–]akasan 0 points1 point ago

geesh i feel old. I graduated highschool in 93

[–]TheRedWox 4 points5 points ago

I had this exact toy (born 1992)

[–]williemcbride 0 points1 point ago

I was born '94 and got one of these from my grandma. Fucking loved it.

[–]Argi_ 10 points11 points ago

Camptown Races, bitch!

[–]kayray 1 point2 points ago

YES.

[–]So_Yeah91 26 points27 points ago

"I have Mary Had A Little Lamb on orange vinyl, you probably never heard of it"

[–]mommadonttakenomess 6 points7 points ago

Have you heard Edelweiss? Its pretty obscure...

[–]Balthanos 8 points9 points ago

I still own one of these.

[–]lisabadcat 23 points24 points ago

I ripped them all to mp3s.

[–]jbird123 12 points13 points ago

You're destroying the industry dude!

[–]N8CCRG 6 points7 points ago

I didn't think reddit would have enough people old enough to know what this was.

[–]da_k-word 1 point2 points ago

When I saw this picture I was hoping the comments wouldn't be filled with younger Redditers complaining about how gay they thought it was.

[–]jgiampaolo70 7 points8 points ago

Kids in my neighborhood were so preppy ghetto - they used to scratch on that thing.

[–]Kurochihiro 6 points7 points ago

Oh my god this. Oh my god THIS.

[–]willflameboy 0 points1 point ago

feelin ya

[–]btribble 6 points7 points ago

When my wife was pregnant (19 or so years ago), we looked around and found a lot of old, vintage Fisher Price toys for our daughter. She grew up with one of these record players as well as the Little People farm and car garage. The pull telephone, the cash register, and the "radio". When you're 2 years old, you have no idea that this stuff isn't new. BTW, we didn't do it to save money, this stuff is pretty pricey. We did it because these toys were designed to let kids be kids rather than encouraging them to grow up before they should. Many of today's toys seem designed to create shallow consumers focused on looks and possessions. Note that we didn't stick to this for more than a couple years. They say that much of your personality is pretty well solidified after the first couple of years.

One of the things you need to be aware of if you try to duplicate this is that the vintage Little People can be a choking hazard. Our daughter didn't stick stuff in her mouth like many kids do, but we still only let her play with some of this under supervision.

[–]da_k-word 0 points1 point ago

I have the houseboat with all the pieces just waiting for my first grandchild to share it with. Just like one below: http://m.pinterest.com/pin/212654413624943908/

[–]KaliHeartCoffee 16 points17 points ago

I learned with this. Although, to be honest, I preferred mine. ;-)

[–]johnnyquest88 2 points3 points ago

still have mine, used it throughout college and into the following years. amazingly prolific.

[–]your_message_here 1 point2 points ago

Nice we had both. I also remember this one: http://i.imgur.com/ICQMj.jpg

[–]skinnyloo 0 points1 point ago

That's the one I remember! I also recall leaving it in front of a sunny window on a summer day, resulting in my first (and last) melted vinyl experience.

[–]MandatoryFun 0 points1 point ago

Is that a pitch control? If so, super jealous!!

[–]PatternOfKnives 5 points6 points ago

Holy shit, I had that exact toy as a kid. Nostalgia flood! I'd love it if I could somehow find online the tunes it used to play.

[–]homeless_man_jogging 0 points1 point ago

Iwas going to guess "London Bridge is Falling Down" was one but then I just decided to look it up. http://www.thisoldtoy.com/l_fp_set/toy-pages/900-999/995-musicboxrecordplayer.html

[–]vivolleyball15 5 points6 points ago

90s Baby who had one (: I've never seen one except mine. Thanks for the nostalgia.

[–]misspantss 3 points4 points ago

Page 5 in the 2012 Sears Wishbook (Canada) has this Fisher-Price Record Player. Exactly as introduced in 1971. Only it's $44.99CAD now. Perhaps a tad more expensive these days?

[–]bottlebrushtree 2 points3 points ago

The new ones suck, they are not music box mechanisms at all anymore, some crappy digital thing that requires batteries.

[–]misspantss 0 points1 point ago

Oh, that's no good! Thank you for the heads up. Nothing is made like it used to be anymore. Cutting corners and using cheap fillers to make the rich richer.

[–]fireboats 1 point2 points ago

I bought one for my son (but kinda for me) and they're not really the same; there are no bumps on the records.

[–]drewcantlose 2 points3 points ago

I had that growing up, I loved that thing!!!

[–]mcon87 2 points3 points ago

Holy cow, now I really want one of these again.

[–]simplyshnazzy 2 points3 points ago

reminds me of moonrise kingdom

[–]willystylee 1 point2 points ago

gets paralyzed by OP digging up lost pre-school memories

Seriously, you went deep there man, way deep. Probably some of my earliest memories.

[–]starfoxsixtywhore 1 point2 points ago

Pretty sure that's how you learned how to use a record player...not a stereo.

[–]WhiteHeather 2 points3 points ago

I'm pretty sure that they made stereo two-channel vinyl records and that stereo just refers to a system that creates the illusion of sound from different directions. You can totally have a stereo system with a record player.

[–]El_Weasel 0 points1 point ago

Stereos played vinyl before they played anything else. I recently went through six Lou Reed records from the seventies and all of them had a disclaimer about stereo and contacting your hardware dealer if you were unsure whether your system could play the records in it.

[–]DigneDilogue 1 point2 points ago

I had this toy! And completely forgot about it until I saw this

[–]mista2kool 1 point2 points ago

This was one of the only interesting toys at my grandparents house. Clearly a leftover from when my parents were kids. Serious nostalgia.

[–]darjen 1 point2 points ago

I played with that SO much.

[–]junkra 1 point2 points ago

Holy crap i loved the one i had stupid ass parents selling it. My school music teacher actually bought it.

[–]two_lips_sink_ships 1 point2 points ago

I loved this toy! I miss it so much!

[–]GammaGrace 1 point2 points ago

Wow! I forgot all about that toy! Thoses were good times :)

[–]philwood313 1 point2 points ago

I had that badass! mary had a little lamb? awesome, imagine giving a kid one of these now

[–]thufferin_thuccotash 1 point2 points ago

I did, he loves it. we are also teaching him all the words to the songs, like some have 5 verses.

[–]Emperor_Zar 1 point2 points ago

I remember this! It seems we all do! We are all old!

[–]Purplefaced 0 points1 point ago

I found one of the discs for this while remodeling my room. I'm sure I have it somewhere.

[–]apcolleen 1 point2 points ago

My sister still has hers and her kids have all played with it.

[–]flyinggnome 0 points1 point ago

I had one when I was little and loved it. Target carried a line of "nostalgia" toys a couple of years ago, so I picked up one of these record players for my daughter. She isn't nearly as fond of hers as I was of mine. :/

[–]carpespasm 0 points1 point ago

I saw where someone was making new discs for these in an 3d printer recently. pretty neat.

[–]Nascent1 1 point2 points ago

Wow, I had one of those too as a kid (late 80s). I wonder if my parents still have it.

[–]katieofoz 1 point2 points ago

Oh how I wish I still had mine. We also had a train with the same type of records that used to roll along and play music

[–]rocksmith 0 points1 point ago

My grandparents have this :) I'm gonna have to make a trip now!

[–]McMeanface 1 point2 points ago

A few seconds ago, I was completely oblivious that I ever played with one of these. After seeing this image, I remembered how mine smelled.

Memory and smell are weird, man.

[–]Maeby78 0 points1 point ago

This reminds me too much of a Facebook "Like if you remember this old toy" post.

[–]DrAtheneum 0 points1 point ago

I had one of these.

[–]willflameboy 0 points1 point ago

I can't stop looking at it. It's aesthetically perfect. Look at the little swirly vine thingy. Gah!

[–]wtfmanquestionmark 1 point2 points ago

I used to scratch on one of these. My aunt saw it and yelled at me. I haven't tried since

[–]Mr_Monster 0 points1 point ago

Oh man! I smiled from ear to ear, and I've got huge ears so that's saying something.

[–]irishrose1920 0 points1 point ago

OMG! I had one of these... totally forgot about it. I wonder if my dad still has it in storage!

[–]screamingradio 1 point2 points ago

My sister and I had one too, but this is what we used the most! Waiting for the right song to come on the radio, or recording our own made up radio station with crazy commercials!

[–]gedDOh 0 points1 point ago

I was afraid of the dark when I was little. To get me back to sleep, my parents would recreate a scene out of a horror mobing by putting one of those plastic records on and setting the dimmer switch to the point where the lighting was eerie and the bulb would flicker and make a faint hissing sound. Maybe that's why I'm fucked up.

[–]adds3000 0 points1 point ago

I had a similar toy except mine was a train; you slipped the disk in the too and it played that while chugging along the floor.

[–]andrer9999 0 points1 point ago

My son plays with my old one still. I only had to walk upstairs to take this photo. It was already out. Unfortunately coins fit through the slots so mine rattles a bit.

http://i.imgur.com/SpyLM.jpg

[–]cjmook21 1 point2 points ago

I remember having this one. Dunno if it's still around. We had a talking big bird with a mouth that moved too.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ydz6LDrTLDU&feature=related

[–]mommadonttakenomess 0 points1 point ago

This was my favorite toy as a kid. Ive been trying to find one for my son who is turning 2. The old ones are apparently made of gold, by the price, and the "new" ones arent music boxes, they have mp3s or something. nope. not the same

[–]heybuddy93 0 points1 point ago

Hey, I had one of those!!! I wonder where it went.....?

[–]_marcspectre 0 points1 point ago

Loved this bleeping things

[–]uchpuch 0 points1 point ago

Its still in my room,,

[–]VETTE_50_TH 0 points1 point ago

Wow! Have seen those since i was like 3-4

[–]ironcock_vonhammer 0 points1 point ago

I have one of these still. I am 34. My 5 year old son plays with it now.

[–]blade2000 0 points1 point ago

Wow! I had one of these as a kid. Takes me back big time!!!!!!

[–]everynameistakenwtf 0 points1 point ago

I don't know where mine ever went, so I got one on eBay for my son. It's the only music that puts him to sleep.

[–]SPDHurricane 0 points1 point ago

i had one of these. awesome.

[–]MmeMeow 1 point2 points ago

Holy crap! Thanks for posting! 80s/90s kid and I loved that thing!

[–]peanut40 0 points1 point ago

Oh lord, I just found one of those in my parent's basement last month. Still worked too! Of course, I couldn't get "London Bridge" out of my head for the rest of the day. :-}

[–]notquiteotaku 0 points1 point ago

I just remembered mine! I think I had one with a recording of Disney's Snow White on it. Goddamn, that was nineteen years ago.

[–]WifeAggro 0 points1 point ago

oh to be a kid again! :/

[–]ValhallaSinking 0 points1 point ago

Holy wave of nostalgia, I am speechless right now.

[–]morecoverage 0 points1 point ago

Oh yeah!

[–]Lastanarchyangel 0 points1 point ago

Oh My! I have one of those :-)

[–]FormerlyEAbernathy 0 points1 point ago

Wow, haven't seen that in a long time.

[–]alpharaptor1 0 points1 point ago

i also had this bad boy http://www.thisoldtoy.com/new-images/images-ok/700-799/fp764-eb85447481-b.jpg

i also had part of a slinky, but it straightened it.

[–]staciedc 0 points1 point ago

Thooose weeere theee daaaaaaays

[–]mlc2475 0 points1 point ago

My parents got me one of these when I was a kid because the box said "unbreakable". I broke it in 5 minutes. YOU HAD ONE JOB!!

[–]MissIndigo 0 points1 point ago

Target has them, but that shit takes batteries now apparently.

EDIT: http://www.fatbraintoys.com/toy_companies/basic_fun/fisher_price_classic_toy_record_player.cfm

[–]kayray 0 points1 point ago

I had this! I loved it! (Born 1969)

I fiddled around with the "needle" to figure out how it worked. The little tines spun and played a note when passing over a bump on the record. A total revelation and I felt like a scientist. Must have been 4 or 5.

Oh where, oh where has my little dog gone, oh where oh where can he be?

[–]encrypter8 0 points1 point ago

ahh I totally had one of those! awesome

[–]homeless_man_jogging 0 points1 point ago

I forgot all about those. I used to have one. What were the tunes again?

[–]NomadE85 0 points1 point ago

THE NOSTALGIA! ITS PAINFUL!

[–]fookyeaItsKai 0 points1 point ago

I think one of my discs was green and played pop goes the weasel.

[–]Pterodactyl_Time 0 points1 point ago

The nursery school at my church still has one, but all the records are missing. So all the kids cut paper disks and draw lines on them. Its really funny.

[–]Koldfuzion 0 points1 point ago

Oh man. My father got me one of these. A few years ago he gave me his Technics turntable a few years ago. Still going strong.

Thanks for the flashback.

[–]holosport 0 points1 point ago

somebody needs to "two turntables and a microphone" this...

[–]gettheboom 0 points1 point ago

I had one of these as a kid!!! Thank you for reminding me!

[–]Dr_Drunk 0 points1 point ago

I'm going to walk on your lawn so hard.

[–]ibbyanne 0 points1 point ago

ohmygoodness. My cousins and I used to play with this all the time. There was one song that was about cars driving around and it would speed up as it went along. We used to run around the room faster and faster until we collided. Must say something about my amazing crash-avoidance skills now . .

[–]pv46 0 points1 point ago

"Joel, do you hear something odd? Something unpleasant? A preponderance of bass perhaps?"

[–]slydon1 0 points1 point ago

a) read this

b) found the Edelweiss record on YT

c) the feels :')

[–]epepepturbo 0 points1 point ago

Allright, he's scrathcin' it right now, cuttin' the record back and forth against the needle. Back and forth, back and forth - making it scratch. But let me tell you somenthin'... Don't try it at home with your dad's stereo... Only under hip-hop supervision. Alright?

[–]Mynchux 0 points1 point ago

Must upvote...

[–]lps_2003 0 points1 point ago

I had one that had sesame street songs. C is for cookie was the Blue one :)

[–]Measlymonkey 0 points1 point ago

I just bought one of those for my son because I had one when I was a kid. He is almost 2 and fucking loves it.

[–]lmkling 0 points1 point ago

Wow what a time warp

[–]deltaninethc 0 points1 point ago

I love you OP for bringing back memories.

[–]mahouyousei 0 points1 point ago

I had one of these, I think. I remember having the discs for it anyway. And I remember chewing on them when I was a toddler so I doubt they would have worked right.

[–]Pesqueeb 0 points1 point ago

Careful, your age is showing.

And mine too I guess since I know what you're talking about.

[–]lazymochabear 0 points1 point ago

I had one of these toooo!!!

[–]MasterA6 0 points1 point ago

Fuck Yeah!!!!!!!!!!

I used to love mine, I would watch the little needles as the record when around. They need to make these again for today's children.

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]tortured_brain 1 point2 points ago

To OP's credit, at least he/she didn't use that line (or something similar like "DAE Remember This?") for his subject.

[–]i_am_Jarod 1 point2 points ago

I love those posts! They bring back memories I had forgotten, everytime! And then I mass mail my family and they're all like WOW!

[–]barontadhg -2 points-1 points ago

This was a fun toy. Kids today probably wonder where the CD is supposed to go.

[–]Jakeophone -2 points-1 points ago

I still have mine of these!

[–]MisterP58 -1 points0 points ago

I had one of these!

[–]dustndarty -2 points-1 points ago

Your parents had a shitty stereo

[–]willflameboy -2 points-1 points ago

Fuck yeah. Barack who?
