Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

[–]Shortcake_amy 127 points128 points ago

That's what city housing should be like!

[–]Fantikerz 37 points38 points ago

Upkeep would be a huge pain in the ass.

[–]Urinalbuckshots 70 points71 points ago

If done correctly by using native plants upkeep is negligible. It should be treated as a natural area and not landscape.

[–]NameTak3r 16 points17 points ago

Worth it?

[–]B33mo 23 points24 points ago

more jobs?

[–]daveswagon 14 points15 points ago

Probably the same amount of jobs because people would just be spending that portion of their money on garden upkeep instead of something else.

[–]adrianmonk 5 points6 points ago

Well, they'd be local jobs at least.

[–]SumDumKunt 6 points7 points ago

You just gave me an idea involving a hammer and some windows. While we're at it, let's bring back the horseless carriage. I'm still bitter as a member of buggy whip makers local 469.

NICE!! I subbed due to this plug. Thanks. I love finding less well known subreddits.

[–]switchedyourletters 0 points1 point ago

Unless you get a huge boner from highways, trees or malls. There's bound to be somebody out there!

[–]Evenged7x 32 points33 points ago

This should've been in a Tony Hawk game...

[–]saxmaster 3 points4 points ago

I imagined a giant game of pinball.

[–]Woogity 1 point2 points ago

I see Halo 3.

[–]SupermanV2 15 points16 points ago

A diamond in the rough.

[–]pipboy_warrior 11 points12 points ago

Yeah, there is a distinct lack of green throughout Osaka.

[–]alex_applause 1 point2 points ago

Agreed, interesting place though... so much to see.

[–]pipboy_warrior 1 point2 points ago

Oh, it's a fantastic place, and I loved hanging out around the Dotombori. Just not much green is all.

[–]trytoholdon 27 points28 points ago

This is Namba Parks in Namba, Osaka. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Namba_Parks

I used to live not too far from here. There's a great Hawaiian burger shop on the 7th(?) floor IIRC.

[–]NameTak3r 9 points10 points ago

Big Kahuna Burger?

[–]lpjaok 1 point2 points ago

Well done, hoping to find that after reading "Hawaiian Burger." In response, I give you this: http://youtu.be/ecc0nbg9m-8.

[–]pipboy_warrior 7 points8 points ago

Used to live in Osaka myself back when working for Nova. Kua'aina was a great restaurant.

[–]dd2520 1 point2 points ago

What branch were you at? Years? Lord I miss Osaka.

[–]pipboy_warrior 3 points4 points ago

Nova Ginganet on the 14th floor. Was there for about 3 years up until the bankruptcy.

[–]killiangray 1 point2 points ago

What happened to you when they went bankrupt? I was working in Japan at the time (for a different company), and I felt really awful for the Nova staff who got left holding the bag.

[–]pipboy_warrior 5 points6 points ago

Basically we didn't get paid the last month, and we could get some of that compensated through the government.

Some people stayed in Japan and got jobs at other companies. Many like myself just headed home. I have a decent job here in the States, so it turned out ok.

[–]killiangray 1 point2 points ago

Ah okay, gotcha. Glad everything worked out for you! Still too bad your time in Japan got cut short, though.

[–]bamboo_panda 9 points10 points ago

I imagine the hanging gardens of Babylon would have looked something like this..what a stunning architectural/design feat by the people of Osaka

[–]rrgrs 8 points9 points ago

Wow I stayed across the street from that mall and had no idea what it was, glad reddit could inform me months later! Here's a pic I took http://imgur.com/gFyuv

[–]Squalor- 7 points8 points ago

That thing is beautiful.

That's the only mall I know of that would make mall walking not seem lame.

[–]macd4tw 7 points8 points ago

Plus it's got a normal looking mall on the inside with all the hallways and escalators and whatnot, so you can still feel lame if you want to.

[–]bongothedark 10 points11 points ago

Is it just me, or is Japan kinda fucking awesome?

[–]Galveira 6 points7 points ago

Japan is really awesome but kind of terrible at the same time.

[–]DrLasagna 5 points6 points ago

Good and bad, like any first world country.

[–]Bidonet 3 points4 points ago

Where is everyone?

[–]chioubacca 2 points3 points ago

This reminds me of mountainous, medieval villages in Europe like Les Baux, France. I wonder if that was the architect's inspiration.

[–]SpencerJamesK 9 points10 points ago

Japanese architecture never ceases to amaze me. And they're mostly disaster proof- a little wobbling, sure, but those buildings just don't give.

[–]luksy 6 points7 points ago

The architecture's American

http://www.jerde.com/featured/place57.html

[–]justarunner 17 points18 points ago

Unless it's a nuclear reactor...

[–]Hempire 9 points10 points ago

or a tsunami?

[–]cellskey 12 points13 points ago

Or Godzilla.

[–]WasIThere 3 points4 points ago

Nothing is explicitly Japanese about this project other than its location. It was built in 2003 by the American architecture firm Jerde Partnership. Also, megablocks like this can be found around Europe as well. I think you're giving Japan a little too much credit.

[–]brazalien 0 points1 point ago

One thing outdoor malls seems to not understand is when it rains. I used to live five minutes from an outdoor mall in Richmond Virginia. I would only have off days when it was raining and the last thing I wanted to do was carry and umbrella and have to walk back and forth from my car three or four times.

[–]mynuname 2 points3 points ago

Outdoor malls work best where the weather is pretty mild, like southern California.

[–]Gengi 2 points3 points ago

Put it in America and the McDonalds at the top.

[–]Illah 5 points6 points ago

First floor brah ain't nobody hiking to their mcNuggets.

[–]savage_manther 2 points3 points ago

Jesus, this is like an MC Escher painting.

[–]SdHanna 2 points3 points ago

I'm surprised that no one has mentioned that this building's design has been based on the Grand Canyon in the US

[–]alwaysguessesasian 0 points1 point ago

That's Namba Parks! Used to live 5 minutes from there. While agree Japan has a lot of cool stuff, the architect for this was not Japanese.

[–]diablofreak 2 points3 points ago

is this picture taken from the Parks Tower? the one that resembles a phat Playstation 3?

pic

[–]JackieBronassis 2 points3 points ago

Am I the only one who notices how empty the "mall" is?

Once two months ago, then a few times a year or more ago. And this one gave the details in the title. I'm not complaining.

[–]Akkarus 4 points5 points ago

I clicked this expecting a green mall. That shit's tan, bro. 9:30 in the morning and I've already been betrayed...

[–]Want_the_JOJ 4 points5 points ago

The url says Ok Ben

[–]accretion 1 point2 points ago

There's an outside mall in San Diego that looks kinda like this, but less trees. It's all confusing too, as to get to the second floor you have to go from the first to the third down to the second, etc. Stupid mall.

[–]clerk3745 1 point2 points ago

Should have been a level on Tony Hawk: Pro Skater.

[–]Hemordroid 1 point2 points ago

Let's do more of this stuff.

[–]Warlaw 0 points1 point ago

I want to shop there.

[–]sennais1 0 points1 point ago

False sense of reality?

You see the same in Hong Kong (and I am sure other highly densely populated cities) where a place might have the name "Sands" "Cove" "Bay" etc but that means an indoor swimming pool themed like a beach, 5 mile from the coast in a coastal city....

Doesn't stop the board shorts and Hawaiian shirts though every afternoon.

[–]InspecterJones 0 points1 point ago

Trying to find a store in that place must be exhausting.

[–]TheCiscoKid84 0 points1 point ago

I want to live there!

[–]spicymelons 0 points1 point ago

I'd really like to take my mountain bike there.

[–]AmanitaMuscaria 0 points1 point ago

I would live here.

[–]TheLangolier 0 points1 point ago

The Presidium

[–]thereal_me 0 points1 point ago

That level in The Halo series?

[–]roygbiv47 0 points1 point ago

reminds me of the Earth Temple from Avatar The Last Airbender.

[–]Airsinner 0 points1 point ago

One day I'll eat a sandwich there...

[–]smokinDND 0 points1 point ago

sorry to be the guy to say this, but shouldn't a "green mall" be full of solar panels and solar water heaters? just cause it has some plants doesn't make it a green mall

[–]aejt 1 point2 points ago

Last time I checked plants were green. It can use the literal meaning of the word green, you know?

[–]frombehindplanets 1 point2 points ago

Hardcore parkour!

[–]PeanutButterChicken 1 point2 points ago

...

I go there so often that I never even think about the design anymore. Hell, walked by it tonight, only 2 hours ago... strange.

[–]PhilCollin5 1 point2 points ago

Parkour paradise.

[–]wildstargoethe 0 points1 point ago

If all malls looked like this I wouldn't hate them.

[–]megafilipe 0 points1 point ago

Amazing

[–]ADHDSloth 0 points1 point ago

I believe this is a race course in Project Gotham Racing 2.

[–]JustinRL_2point0 1 point2 points ago

What the shit? Why didn't I go there when I went to Japan in April?

[–]ramakitty 0 points1 point ago

In the centre of Osaka, it's impossible to know where ground level is.

[–]BlueThundah 1 point2 points ago

brb japan

[–]DiaDeLosMuertos 0 points1 point ago

Man, if I came into money somehow, I'd make businesses/properties like that.

[–]nazbot 1 point2 points ago

I miss Japan. :(

[–]LiveThenDie 0 points1 point ago

Those roots are going to cause problems down the road.

[–]LeighCedar 0 points1 point ago

It is gorgeous, and I enjoyed it as a little refuge from the surrounding chaos of the Namba area of Osaka. Almost no shops are really accessible from the green levels. They serve as a roof top park. The two times I went, I found it as abandoned as the picture suggests. The people stay inside the mall on the lower levels, and out of the sun.

[–]scylus 0 points1 point ago

Beautiful, but it somehow gives off an overgrown, post-apocalyptic feel to it. Maybe because there are only so few people in the pic. Makes it look abandoned.

[–]Zonmatron 1 point2 points ago

Namba parks! I always meant to take pictures of the walls when standing inside the mall, but never did. It also weirded me out that there was a Next in there (I'm British, never thought Next was big enough to make its way to Japan).

[–]MustngSS 0 points1 point ago

More like a tan/brown mall with areas of green...

[–]SynthPrax 0 points1 point ago

That' looks like a nightmare to design and build.

[–]rainbowbre 1 point2 points ago

this is awesome. not only is it good for the enviroment, but would also create landscaping jobs. This should be the model for which all future buildings, residential and commercial, should be based on

[–]ramenmeal 0 points1 point ago

I was at a place extremely similar to this in one of my dreams. Cool.

[–]eddy_v -1 points0 points ago

New user name spamming links...lame.

[–]SecretSnack 1 point2 points ago

That's cool-looking. To be a total bummer though, that's ecologically not any better than a regular mall. Tiny bits of man-made green space unfortunately don't do anything for the environment. (Edge effect)

[–]finalri0t 0 points1 point ago

where's the tasteless photoshop of the tsunami?

[–]8002reverse 0 points1 point ago

It's in the shade for much of the time. 34°39'41.29"N 135°30'06.48"E

[–]Der_Nailer 0 points1 point ago

Appleseed!!

[–]iateyourdinner 0 points1 point ago

The modern version of a metropolitan Hobbit cabin.

[–]elmaschingon 0 points1 point ago

Where are the people?

[–]Kevince 1 point2 points ago

Nice post, NSFW_PORN_ONLY!

[–]FoxKITSUNE 0 points1 point ago

Reminds me of Anno 2070

[–]giraffah 0 points1 point ago

It's beautiful.I have to visit Japan one day.My only complain is that it would look prettier if it were concrete,it would go better with the green.

[–]kalyke 0 points1 point ago

It's places like this that make me think the world could be a better place. :)

[–]ENDLESSfallout -1 points0 points ago

Japan: Good at helping the world, good at scaring the world.

[–]longfigure8 0 points1 point ago

what an eye sore. where is the nuclear reactor?

[–]beigebox 0 points1 point ago

Interesting! It looks kind of like they tried to emulate paddies or terraced farms.

[–]WhatALie 0 points1 point ago

Believe it or not, it looks like that everywhere in Singapore haha.

[–]Charmalandosaur 0 points1 point ago

why can't we have nice things too...

[–]impshial 0 points1 point ago

MY CABBAGES!!!!

[–]peepcrusher 0 points1 point ago

you would think they would run out of stores to put in that mall.

[–]Lemurrific 0 points1 point ago

Does everything in Japan look that fucking cool in real life, too? Or is it only in pictures?

[–]TheContrarian2 0 points1 point ago

That's purty. Makes me think of the Hanging Gardens of Babylon.

[–]ScreamingAloudInside 0 points1 point ago

Looks really cool. The wavey walls start a little low in some places, I wonder if they have trouble with kids risking their lives by walking up them?

[–]ILoveTrance 0 points1 point ago

Reminds me of Kanyon mall in Istanbul.

[–]mamahamster 0 points1 point ago

I would love to max my credit cards here!

[–]Arash310 0 points1 point ago

so much engineering goodness in this.. makes my eyes teary.

[–]perma_derp 0 points1 point ago

not sure if green from nature or radio-active glow

[–]TowrsFallnPepleDyin 0 points1 point ago

Well that was a risky click...

[–]DesertPunked 0 points1 point ago

I'd like to live in a place like this, I think it'd be okay to say that I'd like to visit this mall for building examples of future green locations.

[–]redditorsass9802 0 points1 point ago

Green Mall in Osaka, Japan. I wonder what this i-annnnd WHAT THE FUCK?

[–]ZiplockedHead 0 points1 point ago

[–]Chiman614 0 points1 point ago

no way im pretty sure ive been there

[–]johndhackensacker 1 point2 points ago

Was just here at Namba Parks -- sat out at a parkside table and had a coffee.

It's on top of the nightmarishly confusing Namba Stations underground train complex. Heaven and Hell, recreated for the modern urbanite.

[–]captdimitri 0 points1 point ago

Doesn't look very green. Looks brown.

Should be called "brown mall."

[–]captainAwesomePants 0 points1 point ago

Since I've never been to Japan but do watch a lot of anime, the only thing I know about Osaka is that people from there talk funny and it's okay to be a tad racist to them. I'm not even sure HOW they talk funny; sounds the same to me, but in anime it's all "hahaha that guy is from Osaka."

[–]johadalin 0 points1 point ago

fun fact: one of the shops here is (or at least 2 years ago used to be) called 'Hitman'

[–]farmthis 0 points1 point ago

Yes!! The future is coming true!

[–]jt17621 0 points1 point ago

Fire escapes?

[–]comicvinesss 0 points1 point ago

The awesome building I ever seen (In structure)

[–]GlobindobinButler 0 points1 point ago

OMASHU!!!!

[–]Davaned 0 points1 point ago

Your name lies sir.

[–]Illah 0 points1 point ago

Dont got nature? Don't worry we'll build some.

[–]castleclouds 0 points1 point ago

I'd like to say having been there, the flowers and stuff are nice but the inside is just a regular mall, from birds eye view the foliage seems abundant but it's a bit disappointing when you get in there. Still a patch of green for the greyness of Osaka I suppose.

[–]TreeBeardUK 0 points1 point ago

Tony Hawk would have a field day with that! 1,000,000 points... no sweat!!

[–]Oddjob7500 0 points1 point ago

The imgur link is reassuring for us Bens.

[–]wheehahahahoo 0 points1 point ago

You should see what they want to do in LA.

They want to put a one mile long park over the 101 freeway.

[–]DirtyGreenPaper 0 points1 point ago

SwissOtel!

[–]juru1876 0 points1 point ago

I used images of this place as a part of my presentation on Japan a few years ago in my Asian Studies class.

[–]mechanate 0 points1 point ago

Sheesh, no wonder RPG towns are impossible to navigate.

[–]bobsagetfullhouse 0 points1 point ago

It feels like a pokemon training compound

[–]CarmenTS 0 points1 point ago

That's great, but where is Abercrombie & Fiitch???

[–]ultrapotato 0 points1 point ago

Aww, I love and miss Namba Parks! I've found the Highline in NYC to pale in comparison.

[–]muckdrop 0 points1 point ago

Where are all the people!?

[–]craftyWordsmith 0 points1 point ago

My cousins live near there!

[–]Twsharky 0 points1 point ago

Pretty sure I played this level on Halo Reach... minus the trees

[–]Dawg_Bro 0 points1 point ago

Balamb Garden?

[–]korruptwinkies 0 points1 point ago

More like a mall for exercise junkies.

[–]appi 0 points1 point ago

Namba Parks. Had my second date with my wife there.

[–]That_guy_said_it 0 points1 point ago

Misread the title and spent way too much time looking for green man.

[–]RelaxErin 0 points1 point ago

I will be in Osaka in a few weeks. I'll have to look out for this one.

[–]wakejedi 0 points1 point ago

Theres probably 30 Starbucks in there...

[–]CryWolf13 0 points1 point ago

All those steps = old people hell

[–]weekendschmeekend 0 points1 point ago

tilt shift this, please?

[–]kharnal 0 points1 point ago

The Jerde Partnership gave out Chia clay models of Namba for Christmas last year. I worked in their office quite a bit. Check out a top-down view and it really looks like a natural canyon.

[–]derp_me_gently 0 points1 point ago

this guy would find all the rings.

[–]Inkthinker 0 points1 point ago

I'm almost certain I've seen this in Shirow's "Appleseed" manga... I had no idea it was a real place.

Dang, now I gotta dig through 'em until I find the page in question to see if it's really the same place.

-EDIT-

Blarg. Looked through, couldn't find the particular illustration I had in mind. But this sort of terraced, tiered architecture is seen a lot throughout the book.

I was going to say that Shirow was likely inspired by this, but according to what I can find out, Namba Parks was built in 2000 and the Appleseed series dates to the late 80's-90's.

[–]JockeTF 0 points1 point ago

The question is which one to chose, escalator or elevator?

[–]OverlordSkippy 0 points1 point ago

The strange thing is, they make such bloody good cameras.

[–]Cryo115 0 points1 point ago

This pic made me want to go to Osaka now

[–]bht671 0 points1 point ago

That was a mall?! Shit... Now I gotta go back there an actually go in... Was too busy looking for Gundam shops -_-

[–]NOTurKNIGHT 0 points1 point ago

reminds me of a Killzone level. I want to say in Killzone 2.

[–]mightyTwig 0 points1 point ago

I live near this mall actually and its great to go on walks through it (just not during the summer when all the mosquitoes are out).

[–]zandrexia 0 points1 point ago

You're not living up to your username.

[–]kindofawardance 0 points1 point ago

when you're outside it, it's quite hard to notice how 'green' it is. it only looks eco-friendly from the air (or in the gardens).

[–]Verteros 0 points1 point ago

I recently went to a green mall in Australia, it was one enormous river that went throughout the entire complex with palm trees all over it.

[–]redhead8765309 0 points1 point ago

Wow! Now that's a place to and visit! Ps. Do they have a starbucks there?

[–]Lookieacloudie 0 points1 point ago

There is a huge documentary on this.

[–]mandelbratwurst 0 points1 point ago

This looks like something out of an architect's fantasy sketchbook- but they actually went and built it

[–]WateryPenisButter 0 points1 point ago

That would be a awesome DM map.

[–]Bear333 0 points1 point ago

Ummmm where are all the escalators???

[–]hannars27 0 points1 point ago

Umm that looks like a lot of walking.

[–]PPCwarren 0 points1 point ago

Can't believe they turned Bag End into a mall... and moved it to Japan.

[–]InformalDinner 0 points1 point ago

Redditor for 1 Day= 7029 link karma

...Who are you??

[–]Yamanz 0 points1 point ago

Damn that is one big mall

[–]catgotyourcell 0 points1 point ago

This would never work in the US.

Just look at all those stairs!

[–]WhitePostIt 0 points1 point ago

I'm highly disappointed that we don't have more of these.

[–]kidA91 0 points1 point ago

I would get lost in this and die of starvation.

[–]Black-Box 0 points1 point ago

It feels like walking around the mall would be a real pain.

[–]Celebrimnar 0 points1 point ago

[–]dan3659 0 points1 point ago

That is just asking to be Parkour'd the shit out of!

[–]sniperk94 0 points1 point ago

I just showed my coworkers (I work for a Japanese Company) they said and I quote "Shitty" So apparently there is better out there! Though that seemed pretty bad ass to me!
