Not really kidding
[–]Cheezio 1 point2 points3 points 19 days ago
Sure, I believe you...
[–]RZA1M 12 points13 points14 points 19 days ago
You are misrepresenting what Taqqiya is. It's not to lie or 'defeat' anyone. It was to conceal their Muslim faith when under threat. So people were permitted to lie about being Muslims if it meant that it would cost them their lives.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taqiyya
Let's try and at least be honest when we vilify people.
[–]ScottishPrik 5 points6 points7 points 19 days ago
If we're going to be honest then maybe you shouldn't omit relative facts.
You're very source says "when they are under threat, persecution, or compulsion. This could apply to many things like simple criticism of their faith to preaching to non-believers.
If they are permitted to blaspheme while at risk of perceived threat then it makes perfect sense for a Muslim to lie about their own beliefs if they feel they are being mistreated and/or in need of defending their holy book.
[–]TheOneFreeEngineer 0 points1 point2 points 19 days ago
Traditional scholarship holds only threats of torture, physical maiming, or death are adequate for the use of Taqqiya. even then it is optional

mohammed's rule was that no pictures or images of him should be made of him. he wanted people to worship God, not a man, and live according to the practices he preached. he never wanted to be an icon. he was just the messenger. however, some people just like to take something and twist it to fit their own agendas to spread hate and confusion.
[–]coyote1284 0 points1 point2 points 19 days ago
some people just like to take something and twist it to fit their own agendas to spread hate and confusion.
and that goes more ways than one.
[–]faux-free 8 points9 points10 points 20 days ago
That's it, we must destroy all of the mirrors in the entire world so Mohammed can't see himself!
[–]gjoh 4 points5 points6 points 19 days ago
So, when will reddit be threathened for this? :(
[–]Lots42 0 points1 point2 points 19 days ago
Well, technically, we're all under threat.
[–]Toaka 0 points1 point2 points 19 days ago
Then certainly we can use reverse Taqqiya and all claim to be devout muslims.
Then I better stop doing this. @@8-) <-Happy Mohammed.
[–]coyote1284 1 point2 points3 points 19 days ago
Naw, reddit is under constant threat for hosting /r/exmuslim

All I see is a dirty, hairy pedophile.
[–]adam_cesar 17 points18 points19 points 19 days ago
A basic level of hygiene will take care of that. Just wash up with soap and shave and you will just be a pedophile.
[–]Draziil 2 points3 points4 points 20 days ago
I was asked a question the other day by a friend. She asked me WHY Muslims are so dead-set against Mohammed being portrayed in any visual manner. We both know that it's a strong belief that some have, but I lacked the details to explain to her. My only guess was that they see him as so pure and righteous that no one is able to portray him properly and any attempt to do so would be heresy.
[–]ElCheffe 9 points10 points11 points 20 days ago
Basically so people would't worship him as a god. See: Jesus.
[–]sparktray 1 point2 points3 points 19 days ago
Also so that his image couldn't be corrupted and reinterpreted (see: Christianity). Same reason a translation of the Quran is not the Quran, a painting of Muhammad is not Muhammad.
[–]TheOneFreeEngineer 10 points11 points12 points 20 days ago
Because Muslims are prohibited from making graven images or idols. and Islamic thought traditionally holds that by creating a image of Mohammed, it can easily fall into Idol worship instead of God worship. Technically the prohibition is only for Muslims, but many don't seem to care about that technicality.
Also more Muslims are upset about negative images of Mohammed, like the danish cartoons with Mohammed's turban being a bomb. It was offensive and many took offense, and many of the places that rioted also have a taboo against insulting the dead, let alone a dead prophet (it has to do with not being able to apologize to a dead person)
[–]themaddestnomad 1 point2 points3 points 19 days ago
this guy. right here. upvote.
[–]Porglim 5 points6 points7 points 20 days ago
they see him as so pure and righteous that no one is able to portray him properly
Originally it was pretty much the opposite. Mohammed didn't want any glory as a prophet to detract from the glory of god and his message.
Of course now, it is more about the letter of the law rather than the spirit.
[–]baconilluminati 0 points1 point2 points 20 days ago
maybe they're afraid mohammed would be portrayed as a shirtless white guy wearing a turban while brushing his teeth?
[–]buttsmcpoop 2 points3 points4 points 19 days ago
I like you.
[–]modemjammer 0 points1 point2 points 19 days ago
That explains why I haven't seen any documentary on Muhammed.
[–]chermane9381 2 points3 points4 points 19 days ago
Oh, but there are documentaries about him. only thing is that you won't see his face. i waited till they made a mistake....well they never made one...
[–]thablitzreaper 1 point2 points3 points 19 days ago
There are plenty of them. There's actually a movie about Muhammed. It's called "The Message." There is no actor playing Muhammed. He is portrayed by a first-person-view camera.
[–]thablitzreaper 0 points1 point2 points 19 days ago
Because people would set up their own personal shrines to him in their homes and stuff and actually worship his image and memory.
[–]yeathl 7 points8 points9 points 20 days ago
During the hoopla about other infamous mohammed cartoons, I heard one man interviewed (indetifying himself as a muslim) said this, "Look it's just highly disrespectful and hurts us deeply. I mean you don't see us going around drawing disdainful, sacriligous pictures of Jesus do you?"
And all I could think was, "No, we do that all by ourselves! It's the wonderful benefit of free speech!"
p.s. that's a great comic! I still like this depiction of mohammed better though:

Muslims ritually bath up to 5 times a day for prayers. Cleanliness is next to Godliness
[–]Fausto1981 0 points1 point2 points 18 days ago
thank you for the precious infos. i didn't know any of them because i live in a parallel universe where farts are burps and burps are farts.
Muhammad propogated personal hygiene. One of the sunnahs is brushing your teeth and having good body odor, which are sunnahs that are very much well-followed today. It is said that he spent more on perfumes than he did on food because he enjoyed smelling well. One was forbidden to come to pray at the mosque if he had eaten smelly foods like onions or something, in case the odor from his mouth disturbed those around him.
Muslims are required to keep public and armpit hair cut, and are required to be in a state of ritual purity. Private parts must be washed after using the bathroom and the hands, face, head, arms, and feet must be clean before praying.
Cleanliness and personal hygiene is considered half faith in Islam.
It still appalls me how unclean I was before I converted to Islam, lol.
[–]hthu 0 points1 point2 points 19 days ago

OP obviously doesn't know very much about Islam. Muhammad actually taught that he shouldn't be held above anyone else (worshipped), and that to do so goes against Allah. Knowledge.

r/atheism is a religion-themed r/funny
From the FAQ:
R/atheism is a lightly moderated forum with more than 1 million members. A consequence of the size and freedom of the forum is that it also includes people who are willing and able to make mean and nasty posts.
If you'd like a more strictly moderated atheist subreddit, might I suggest /r/trueatheism?
[–]JohnnLocke -7 points-6 points-5 points 19 days ago
So it's okay for you guys to constantly bash religion but if they retaliate they'll be absolutely wrong? Gotta love the hypocrisy. Oh yeah and I'm fully aware of the downvotes I'll be receiving I mean this is the religion of r/atheism where we upvote anybody who agrees with us and downvote those who oppose well because WE'RE RIGHT AND YOU'RE WRONG.

He is the most influential man in the world's history. I mean...<w.t.f>... you mock and insult him? I believe that if he was alive today, if the stuff I read on this post was said about him... it would be defamation of character.
[–]thetheist 7 points8 points9 points 20 days ago
He is the most influential man in the world's history.
Who says muslims lack perspective?
[–]PHYLYO -5 points-4 points-3 points 20 days ago
You can check Guiness.
[–]thetheist 2 points3 points4 points 20 days ago
Or you can check out an actual history book sometime. Besides, I think you mixed up your records. The record for "most influential man in history" is right next to "most famous pedophile", so it's pretty easy to get them confused.
[–]PHYLYO -4 points-3 points-2 points 19 days ago
By what standard was he a pedophile?!?! Dude, back in the day 12 year old women were considered of age to marry. MANY famous men of the past married women of that age or even younger. We're taking today's modern definition and applying it to all of our ancestors. We can't do that...
History books lol...dude go google it, Muhammad is the most influential man in the world's history. No doubt about it.
[–]Acekardo 5 points6 points7 points 19 days ago
You are correct that many historians say he was the most influential man who ever lived. However that doesn't mean he was a force of good, and it doesn't mean we cant mock him.
[–]thetheist 1 point2 points3 points 19 days ago
Mostly muslim "historians" and other apologetics.
[–]thetheist 4 points5 points6 points 19 days ago
Mohammad is not the most influential man in the world's history by any reasonable standard. The only way to come to that conclusion is to ignore people who are far more influential. People like Hammurabi, Socrates, Plato, Pythagoras. It's clear that as you go backwards in time, you'll reach people who actually shaped our modern society.
Or how about you take your dumb quote about "most influential" to /r/Christianity and see them come back with dumb shit about how Jesus is the most influential. You only think that because of your bias.
Also, a pedophile is somebody who is sexually attracted to pre-pubescent children. Since Mohammad fucked a 9 year old girl when he was in his 50s, he must have somehow gotten it up. It's not about societal norms. He was clearly a pedophile.
[–]horribledad 9 points10 points11 points 19 days ago
He had sex with a nine year old girl and massacred an entire tribe of Jews. People are allowed to insult him.
[–]PHYLYO 0 points1 point2 points 19 days ago
Do you know why he went to war with vs that tribe? Context is pretty clear... She wasn't pre pubescent
[–]horribledad 0 points1 point2 points 19 days ago
You are apologizing for genocide and pedophilia. Look at yourself.
Look at this guy.
[–]improperjeddawi -4 points-3 points-2 points 19 days ago
Actually, he did not have sex with a nine-year-old. Aisha was approximately sixteen when they got married. She was the daughter of his best friend, who wanted their relationship as friends to become familial. At age nine, he decided that his daughter Aisha was to marry Muhammad, but they had to wait until she was fifteen to gain her consent. Back then, fifteen was the age at which you were considered a full member of society for both males and females, i.e. you were allowed to marry or participate in warfare. So, even in that society, it wouldn't be acceptable to marry a nine-year-old. As for massacring Jews, the story wasn't that simple. A certain tribe of Jews called Bani Quraytha had betrayed the entire society of Medina and violated the Constitution of Medina by allowing the enemy to enter Medina from their side of the city, which was fortified from all sides except their's, since they had agreed to guard it. When the battle ended and they were discovered to be the betrayers, they were offered to pick a judge to sentence them, so they pick a man of their own who had recently converted to Islam, Saad bin Mu'aath. He asked them which law they wanted to be judged by, the Islamic or the Jewish. They selected the Jewish, and according to the interpretation of the Torah at the time, the punishment of treason (which to this day is regarded as the most heinous crime by Jewish society, and is punished most severely in Israel) was the execution of the adult men and the enslavement of the women and children. Also, he did not simply slaughter all the Jews, only those in Bani Quraytha, and only those who chose to remain loyal to their tribe.
[–]horribledad 7 points8 points9 points 19 days ago
This is just wrong. She was 6 when he married her, and 9 when he consummated the marriage. And you are apologizing for genocide.
[–]improperjeddawi -2 points-1 points0 points 19 days ago
Actually, if you mathematically trace the years, you'll find that Aisha couldn't have been 9 when they consummated the marriage in 2 A.H. Her sister Asma'a was 17-18 during the Hijra, and it is documented that Aisha is about five years younger than Asma'a. That would make Aisha around 12-13 during Hijra and 14-15 when consummated the marriage. The genocide thing would be easier to explain with an analogy. Imagine that a Muslim man in the US had sex with a prostitute, and was caught. He was given the option of being judged by US law or Islamic law, knowing that Islamic law prescribes 100 lashes for such a crime, while US law would punish it as a misdemeanor. He chose to be judged by Islamic law, and was subsequently lashed. Does that not seem fair? Genocide means that Muhammad targeted Jews as an ethnic group and killed them, which is not true. Muhammad only executed the offending tribe of Bani Quraytha, who happened to be Jewish. He even gave them the option of choosing their arbitrator, who gave them the choice of choosing the law they want to be judged by. Is that not fair?
P.S. Calling the execution of Bani Quraytha genocide is like calling the execution of a group of terrorists genocide, simply because they are all of a single ethnicity. Imagine if the nineteen 9/11 attackers survived and were caught. Would they not have been executed by the US government? Can I call that a genocide of Muslims?
[–]Stublore 0 points1 point2 points 19 days ago
So Aisha was lying when she said she was 6?
Isn't that from amongst others,Bukahari, the most reliable of the hadith collections? Or is it conveniently just wrong when talking about mo raping a 9 year old?
[–]improperjeddawi 1 point2 points3 points 19 days ago
How is it possible that Muhammad married Aisha when she was 6 if the society at the time didn't permit it? At that time and place, social custom dictated that marriage cannot be consummated until age 15, just like boys could not fight in battles until they were 15. It was the age of majority. Muhammad marrying Aisha at 6 is as implausible as saying that you married a 13-year-old in the US. That is all assuming you don't believe in basic math, just like some fools don't "believe" in evolution.
Other Bukahuri hadiths conflict with the Bukahari hadiths about her age. the 9 year old hadith is just the simplest
[–]improperjeddawi 0 points1 point2 points 19 days ago
I notice that the atheists in this post conveniently ignore all the historical accounts of Aisha's marriage, while accepting the traditional accounts. By that I mean to say that historical accounts are usually based on facts and they almost unanimously agree that Aisha was NOT nine when she consummated her marriage to Muhammad. The people who assert that she was nine all depend on information that is passed down by tradition. Also, some present-day Muslims with stone-age minds try to push the false idea that Aisha was nine to justify their own child marriages.
[–]modemjammer 4 points5 points6 points 19 days ago
the most influential man in the world's history.
Really? What ever happened to the man (or woman) who invented the wheel, or learned to use fire.
What did he do? Because I have never heard of him beyond the religion.
[–]FuhQue 0 points1 point2 points 19 days ago
You would think "the most influential man in the world's history" would be able to handle a little mocking and insulting. Especially since a lot of his influence caused untold misery for billions of people over the years.
