[–]LordRoland 110 points111 points ago

Go downtown they said. It's a good day to go shopping they said.

[–]uaintgotnopancakemix 31 points32 points ago

I actually just moved away from Charleston, I had no idea the downtown market could get flooded like this...also the $5000 baskets they sell are probably ruined

[–]matty_ice_96 14 points15 points ago

It's called a table.

[–]awesomemanftw 2 points3 points ago

People often times sell baskets on the ground for whatever reason.

[–]ratking11 16 points17 points ago

Your boyfriend is a huge jerkoff apparently.

[–]Lady_Grey 5 points6 points ago

Lawl! I grew up on Sullivan's Island, boy is this the truth....sweet grass baskets EVERYWHERE.

[–]kbergstr 6 points7 points ago

Lived on IOP for a year and a half in high school -- confirmed.

[–]Paclac 2 points3 points ago

Current boyfriend? Why?

[–]PhiladelphiaIrish 16 points17 points ago

Establish an island with supplies. Secede.

[–]GummiDemilo 4 points5 points ago

Gentlemen. Once again, Fort Sumter is ripe for the taking.

[–]Doxiedad 35 points36 points ago

Wow, I knew there was a reason I dont go downtown much in the rain.

It's pretty cool to see something local on Reddit though

[–]kewlfocus 34 points35 points ago

"lol, white people."

[–]thekid_frankie 3 points4 points ago

shit cray

[–]AngriestCosmonaut 7 points8 points ago

Hey, I know that picture. The world is too small.

[–]Panda_Undies 4 points5 points ago

agreed, although I kind of wish the inside of my work looked that way. I'd love to chill on an innertube or something.

[–]SecretWeapon 3 points4 points ago

I travel there for work sometimes, I've been in that market. I thought poor drainage in those old streets might be causing that lingering smell.

[–]Anal0gous 11 points12 points ago

That putrid smell is actually the horsepiss that gets baked in the sun all day

[–]arcenite 3 points4 points ago

I've been there too, also on travel... really cool to see.

[–]superfuzzy 52 points53 points ago

I love Charleston, one of the nicest little towns I have ever been in.

[–]GrizzlymintPouches 30 points31 points ago

Where the hell are you from, Tokyo? Charleston has over 100k people...

[–]Zigo 33 points34 points ago

That's pretty small.

[–]PlasmaBurns 5 points6 points ago

I went there on my first family vacation when my son was like 8 months old. I remember that market. We were too poor to buy anything, but we really liked Charleston.

[–]sgrodgers10 2 points3 points ago

I moved here 2 months ago it's amazing

[–]Ryan_Firecrotch 74 points75 points ago

South Carolina on Reddit without being a quote from some dumb ass fundie or incest case? Whoo! We're going places!

[–]GummiDemilo 18 points19 points ago

Next stop--top 40 in education!

[–]real_horror_show 6 points7 points ago

highly unlikely...our state...words fail me.

[–]awesomemanftw 9 points10 points ago

There seem to be a lot of SC redditors actually.

[–]Ryan_Firecrotch 4 points5 points ago

Nah, we just came out of the woodwork. Like termites.

[–]Generic09 4 points5 points ago

that's what flooding will do.

[–]arandomshot 0 points1 point ago

Myrtle Beach represent!

[–]Jacksonsalley 28 points29 points ago

Another Redditor from South Carolina? impossible

[–]flynavy46 8 points9 points ago

Whattup from Myrtle Beach!

[–]oejnaef 4 points5 points ago

...there are other Redditors in Myrtle Beach?! MindBlownDotGeeEyeEff

[–]simslover 2 points3 points ago

Myrtle Beach represent :D (well technically Conway but close enough)

[–]TheSnugglerDayZ 7 points8 points ago

Aiken in da house!

[–]allogator 6 points7 points ago

There's four of us. At least!

[–]randomguitarlaguna 6 points7 points ago

There's 5 now!

[–]theMUFFINcatMAN 5 points6 points ago

Upstate checking in

[–]Btelvington 2 points3 points ago

Florence present!

[–]MsDarkly 27 points28 points ago

You know you're a dork when you get excited that your hometown makes reddit.

[–]Pythosblaze 8 points9 points ago

That's the cleanest flood water I have ever seen. Maybe I should move to Charleston.

[–]GarnetandBlack 13 points14 points ago

It's clean only because this happens anytime someone takes a shower and it's high tide. No time for any dirty buildup.

[–]cowings 6 points7 points ago

[–]Afa1234 9 points10 points ago

It's nice and warm in Anchorage, Alaska right now

[–]ArchibaldBusting 6 points7 points ago

I was in North Charleston today eating lunch, and the "emergency flood warning" beeped on everybody's phone in the joint, it was pretty interesting. Didn't get to kayak back to work after unfortunately.

[–]CivEZ 11 points12 points ago

Go to work they said, It'll be dry they said.

[–]ConnorTheCatholic 17 points18 points ago

Charleston redditors! I love it.

[–]LabThug 3 points4 points ago

r/Charleston does exist :-)

[–]sirsasana 21 points22 points ago

First time I've ever seen something on reddit that I saw on Facebook first. Damn you!

[–]suggst65 8 points9 points ago

Same here. I thought about posting it but then I used better judgement.

[–]MolybdenumMan 20 points21 points ago

I think every redditor in SC is thinking that right now

[–]Raymond890 6 points7 points ago

"Did someone say Charleston!? I KNOW WHAT THAT PLACE IS!"

[–]NobodysSide 6 points7 points ago

There's also videos floating around the internet of people wake boarding from the back of trucks. I feel that is just so quintessential Charleston. Also, I'm just super happy that there's actually something awesome being recognized about Charleston.

[–]violentacrez 17 points18 points ago

[–]WantobeL 10 points11 points ago

Redditors? Here? In my city? I thought I was the only one...

[–]gatorb888 2 points3 points ago

[–]everest90909 4 points5 points ago

Do the sweetgrass baskets float?

[–]ConnorTheCatholic 6 points7 points ago

I just tested it, they do indeed float.

[–]everest90909 6 points7 points ago

Awesome, thank you for the info, sir. I think chucktown will be A-OK then thanks to that cottage industry.

[–]Ghostwolf765 4 points5 points ago

Charleston Represent! Pretty cool that we got to the front page!

[–]exileskim 9 points10 points ago

Love charleston, but that water must be foul! Horses from the carriage tours poop all over the streets.

[–]captain-cowboy 10 points11 points ago

they wear leather poop bags

[–]Fourdrinier 2 points3 points ago

But they do urinate on the street freely. Occasionally during the day, bleach is dumped onto the street to "clean" it...

[–]Sillylovesongs 2 points3 points ago

It rained cats and dogs in New Delhi yesterday. There used to be a divider on the road, used to.

[–]1CUpboat 9 points10 points ago

There still is. There used to be one too, though.

[–]serrit 5 points6 points ago

I thought Agassi retired to Vegas.

[–]Lives_with_bigots 2 points3 points ago

Florence, South Carolinian here. I didn't think anyone else from SC was a redditor.

[–]Kaibunny143 5 points6 points ago

Ahh my birthplace. Nice to see Charleston on reddit :)

[–]zerodashzero 3 points4 points ago

Wow, North Charleston guy here. Heard it was crazy downtown now I have proof.

EDIT: All these local redditors....is weird...but awesome too....

[–]batmanandcheryl 2 points3 points ago

And this is why I love living in downtown Charleston.

[–]echoes221 8 points9 points ago

Go to charlston they said. It will be sunny they said.

[–]ConnorTheCatholic 27 points28 points ago

"The humidity's not that bad" they said.

[–]voracioush 6 points7 points ago

Charleston reddit get together.

AMIRITE?

[–]AngriestCosmonaut 3 points4 points ago

Every fucking time I plan on going down there with my canoe, everyone else is busy! Who canoes alone down market street?! Madmen, I tell you!

[–]PepperidgeFarmer 5 points6 points ago

Oh man, to be honest I didn't think anyone from SC was on reddit.

[–]Pseudonova 10 points11 points ago

Sure we are, we got internet like 3 weeks ago. Some dude from Atlanta with a really long ethernet cord, we elected him president.

[–]Layzrfyzt 3 points4 points ago

Go to Charleston, they said. It'll be fun, they said.

[–]xenomorph13 5 points6 points ago

My wife and I were just downtown on Saturday, jeeze glad we went last weekend and not this one. Also, awesome that there are more SC redditors, I live in the sticks and most people here are convinced that "dem der interwebz be work of the devil".

[–]ItchyPickle 2 points3 points ago

That actually looks like a lot of fun.

[–]ch33sencrackers 2 points3 points ago

This wasn't recent, was it?

[–]Duderony 10 points11 points ago

It is actually happening right now. The pictures above are from today (Tuesday 8/28/12)

[–]thegodofkhan 2 points3 points ago

People standing in the back must have long legs.

[–]cjfrey96 2 points3 points ago

That has to suck for Tom Mason, all of his stuff is down there.

[–]Eshrinnhero 2 points3 points ago

I was just there, working at the MoonPie Store.

[–]darklight12345 2 points3 points ago

i think it'd be even funnier if the owners of the market street stands were in boats or something selling the stuff to the canoe people.

[–]Kelseyb 2 points3 points ago

Judges finally closed down Court at 3 and sent us home. Would've gone home earlier if I had brought a kayak with me to work.

[–]xkillx 1 point2 points ago

and this is why you should probably live above sea level. give yourself a bit of a buffer.

[–]stitches31 2 points3 points ago

I never go downtown when it rains hard in Charleston. My little car could never handle it.

[–]Plippet 2 points3 points ago

my sister goes to charleston, i just texted her asking if she was alive...

[–]alberca 2 points3 points ago

I think we have the same hobby in Dominican Republic after Isaac http://a3.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc6/225190_459697890737834_1275183123_n.jpg

[–]MattC23 2 points3 points ago

Reppin Mount Pleasant! Many rains are happening all around Chucktown

[–]LowSociety 2 points3 points ago

They should hang out with this guy.

[–]charlottesavage 4 points5 points ago

this just came up on my news feed. don't know who took it, but its great.

[–]SaneAids 4 points5 points ago

That's a really cool market also, isn't that where they use to sell slaves?

[–]thetornadoissleeping 24 points25 points ago

That's a common misconception, but no. However slaves were sold nearby at the Old Slave Mart on Chalmers st. There is a museum there now.

[–]TheOtherSideOfThings 7 points8 points ago

However slaves were sold nearby at the Old Slave Mart on Chalmers st.

With a name like that I would have never guessed.

[–]thetornadoissleeping 2 points3 points ago

It wasn't called that at the time obvs. Slaves were also sold at the exchange building (formerly the customs house) before 1850-something.

[–]kbergstr 5 points6 points ago

and it's a common misconception that it's a cool market.

1) It's hotter than hell in summertime. 2) It's full of overpriced crap.

[–]Not_A_Hipster_ 2 points3 points ago

The guy in the background only has water up to his ankles. ಠ_ಠ

[–]Afa1234 5 points6 points ago

You don't need much water to kayak >.>

[–]midolphins90 3 points4 points ago

Damn, is it really that bad? I guess I'll stay on this side of the Ravenel Bridge

[–]t3hdoct0r 0 points1 point ago

It must be hard. Living underground, hiding from aliens.

[–]Boineau_CDS16 1 point2 points ago

I know where that's at I go there all the time.

[–]claxtonamobay 0 points1 point ago

I did the same thing after I beat the game

[–]Lady_Grey 1 point2 points ago

Holy shit is that the old slave market? I bet the vendors are pissed...they pay through the nose for those booths....

[–]GarnetandBlack 6 points7 points ago

Slaves were never sold in the market on Market Street (pictured here). The Old Slave Market is a few blocks away and is a museum. Today you learned.

[–]Cubcake1 0 points1 point ago

Deep at work too. Had waves coming over the bow of my WORK TRUCK!!

[–]DooberBooberDoo 1 point2 points ago

I love going to school here, even when it rains all the time.

[–]JustZisGuy 0 points1 point ago

That market kicks ass! There's some awesome spice vendors.

[–]superoldz24 0 points1 point ago

I feel so relevant. These photos were floating around work emails today. I was wondering how long it would be until I saw them here. Now it's almost time to go ford that mess so I can go home! edit:forgot a word

[–]TLCAGaming 0 points1 point ago

I had to get home from school by traveling all the way down Meeting Street to the highway and it took an hour to get home

[–]scubadivingzoo 0 points1 point ago

lol I got soaked today. Oh, Charleston.

[–]StackOfMay 1 point2 points ago

Watch out for Skitters.

[–]karmashmoo 1 point2 points ago

Charleston redditors all over the city scrambled to get this photo on here. Kudos my friend.

[–]KelseyLeila 1 point2 points ago

I'm expecting to be able to do this in New Orleans tomorrow

[–]HiDaveGeorge 1 point2 points ago

Good thing those weren't Gullah women in the kayaks. They'd be pretty pissed if you took their pictures and didn't pay them.

[–]Strawcrazyman 1 point2 points ago

Careful of koalas.

[–]aepyx 0 points1 point ago

Holy crap, I walked through that market earlier this year. Wicker baskets everywhere.

[–]thetornadoissleeping 5 points6 points ago

Sweetgrass, not wicker:)

[–]Monco123 1 point2 points ago

[–]Harkaen 1 point2 points ago

Y'all need to fix your serious drainage issues.

[–]DragonRisingIII 0 points1 point ago

It's hard to believe that it's raining this hard in Charleston. My area (in Berkeley County) almost never gets this much rain.

[–]dbest1989 1 point2 points ago

I hate driving downtown

[–]JonWood007 1 point2 points ago

I've been a tourist to Charleston before. I remember being stranded IN the market due to heavy rain, but I never seen people canoe through it.

[–]conanoid 0 points1 point ago

It makes me nervous to think of being in water with electricity overhead.

[–]djscribblescrabble 0 points1 point ago

The gross part is thats flood water mixed with sewage water. I found this little piece of information out years ago after playing in my first downtown Charleston flood.

[–]dirice87 0 points1 point ago

Right now insurance companies are shitting themselves

[–]thomasdc96 1 point2 points ago

Charleston City Paper already has and article about these guys its been like six hours. Link

[–]zulubowie 0 points1 point ago

Is this Magnolias on East Bay St.?

[–]JizzCreek 0 points1 point ago

GO TO THE STORE THEY SAID. IT WILL BE FUN THEY SAID.

[–]centech 0 points1 point ago

A foot of standing water water in the building.. don't turn off the electricity. Seems wise.

[–]I-Redeemer 1 point2 points ago

Wow...my friend goes to CofC and said it was bad. I had no idea this bad though.

[–]no-cake 0 points1 point ago

this will probably get more air time than Armstrong's passing.

[–]LaNyan 0 points1 point ago

I was right in the area where they were at, water was about 3 feet high. Cars hydro locking every where.

[–]conversionbot 0 points1 point ago

3 feet = 0.91 meters

[–]terrible0ne 0 points1 point ago

thats freaking market street. when was that??

[–]icehocey66 0 points1 point ago

Fort Mill and USC Student reporting for duty

[–]mrJigglez 0 points1 point ago

Did you say a DAY of heavy rain?

[–]CuddyG 0 points1 point ago

Haha, saw you guys today!!!

[–]wildewisdom 0 points1 point ago

I went shopping there last year...nice little market

[–]tucktuckgoose 1 point2 points ago

Does Ashley Avenue still flood? When I worked at MUSC, it was fun to watch cars float away from the walkover over that street.

[–]bfrantz 0 points1 point ago

I have been there!

[–]Aka-Magosh 1 point2 points ago

I was born in Charleston, SC. I moved to Nebraska unfortunately but can't wait to go back. :D

[–]OhSix 0 points1 point ago

My home is flooded, oh noes (Yeah, I live in Charleston too, and yes, I'm stoked that Charleston's on the front page because I'm a dork)

[–]Mahpoophurts 0 points1 point ago

This makes me want to flood my house so bad...

[–]DRhexagon 0 points1 point ago

This makes me miss Charleston, I moved out 3 months ago. When I lived there I used to take my bike out during storms and bike along the battery with the 10 foot waves crashing over the sea wall. It was religious.

[–]mrscrawfish 0 points1 point ago

pfft... that's not even during high tide there. I've seen worse.

[–]JPEEZY95 0 points1 point ago

I live here too! The flea market their at used to be a slave trade back in the day

[–]AcneVulgaris 0 points1 point ago

I bet that water is NASTY!

[–]NickelbackExplorer 0 points1 point ago

I'm in Myrtle Beach and it's been raining pretty bad here but holy shit I do not wish that upon anyone (however fun that may be).

[–]iamwutiam 0 points1 point ago

Market street got hit hard today. Was fun wading in charleston's river roads

[–]vpovio 0 points1 point ago

WOO! MARKET STREET! Are you nukes?

[–]CuppyMcCake 0 points1 point ago

I bet they didn't expect to get rain from hurricane issac lol!

[–]iainttunderstandshit 0 points1 point ago

Lake City up in this bitch represent The Funky Monkey!

[–]BHSPitMonkey 0 points1 point ago

I'm no expert, but shouldn't they probably keep the electricity off? (For fear of causing a short somewhere)

[–]slayeromen 0 points1 point ago

Not sure its a good idea to have the power on.. but whatev.

[–]brumbz 0 points1 point ago

Also saw this in my facebook newsfeed earlier and knew it was a matter of time before it made Reddit's front page. As a CofC Alum who lived downtown, I remember water getting as high as knee/thigh deep when we were brushed by hurricanes and tropical storms.. and they still wouldn't fucking call off class. Fuck downtown now, I would like to not get diseases from that water or destroy my car. WEST NASTY REPRESENT.

[–]Lotrent 0 points1 point ago

whaaa, something local to me...on the front page of reddit?!

[–]1000degreesDD 0 points1 point ago

I live in charleston and just saw them today! I wish I had my camera on me!

[–]1leggeddog 0 points1 point ago

Some heavy Rain you say?

Now we just need some speech bubbles on that picture shouting "JASON!"
