Those hooks are designed rip through the flesh of smaller enemies. Humans are just too big for them to handle, and they try their best when their hive is in danger.

[–]huge_mop 70 points71 points ago

Reason is humans have soft flesh. Honeybees have barbed stingers which were "designed" to pierce hard exoskeletons and then retracted.

FirstLinkFromGoogle: http://www.articleinput.com/e/a/title/Why-does-a-bee-die-after-it-has-stung-somebody/

[–]hesapmakinesi 11 points12 points ago

Thanks for the article.

[–]huge_mop 5 points6 points ago

No problem.

[–]RobinPerris 5 points6 points ago

TIL. Thanks.

[–]illvetis 0 points1 point ago

No pictures? Aaawww... maaan...

[–]huge_mop 2 points3 points ago

Can't leave you hanging now can I? Therefore, WAM POW BUZZ.

Safe for work, unless you work in a honeybee counseling center. Then NSFW. The "string" extending from the stinger is intestinal tissue.

[–]illvetis 0 points1 point ago

But that doesn't expain anything. Disappoint.

[–]huge_mop 0 points1 point ago

What would you like to be explained? I just included pictures of the barbed stinger and what happens when it pierces soft flesh.

[–]McHomans -1 points0 points ago

Came to post and was beaten. Touche good sir.

[–]Zeheve 288 points289 points ago

This comic is funnier when you don't read the punchline first.

[–]muddd3d 25 points26 points ago

why I have to click every link in r/Funny without reading them!

[–]always_useful 16 points17 points ago

Although, if you did that then half of them wouldn't make sense anyway.

[–]muddd3d 4 points5 points ago

True, but I'd rather go back to see why it's funny, then be told the punch line up front.

[–]Stratocaster89 0 points1 point ago

I turned of thumbnails for that reason to start with. Nowadays i just click any link that isnt purple, if i dont get it i go back and read the title.

[–]medlish 2 points3 points ago

Good thing I opened multiple tabs and forgot about the title before reading the comic.

Man, I really have to work on my memory.

[–]HoaryPlatypus 2 points3 points ago

Multiple tabs, hah! I read a title, click the link, then forget what I'm looking at.

[–]lilcheap2 61 points62 points ago

Dont put the punchline in the freaking title!

[–]unseth 3 points4 points ago

What do you expect from poopsack?

[–]CitizenBear 35 points36 points ago

Source: http://buttersafe.com/2010/10/21/serving-the-queen/ Buttersafe is easily one of my favorite web comics

[–]MadManuel 4 points5 points ago

Thanks for posting the link to source! Thought it was hilarious. Couldn't figure out who the author was.

[–]IronOhki 0 points1 point ago

Thank you for posting this. It frustrates me that Reddit won't link directly to web comics who crave website hits the way you crave karma.

[–]hippopotacat 25 points26 points ago

Actually, when the bee stings its enemy, pheromones are released with the stingers to signal other bees to attack it aswell. Thats how they repel bigger enemies, such as bears. Source: My father is a beekeeper since 1951 and still going strong, i have been beekeeping since i was able bodied (23 yrs old right now).

[–]ethos85 3 points4 points ago

You became able bodied at 23? Damn. I need to start getting my shit together.

[–]SlightlyAmbiguous 5 points6 points ago

There's something really great about this picture.

[–]Tinkerboots 0 points1 point ago

It's possibly the duck shirt.

[–]pungkrocker 2 points3 points ago

I like your hair. I hope you have somewhat similiar style today.

[–]hippopotacat 1 point2 points ago

Hate to break it to you, but i'm a dude. My mother always wanted a daughter so i was one the first few years of my life. But thanks anyways :D (and yes i know, men can also have long hair, but not me, just trust me).

[–]pungkrocker 2 points3 points ago

Nono, i knew you were a bloke. It was but an internet compliment. I myself have beautiful long semi curly hair. If today your hair is anything like that picture (whilst grown) you NEED to rock that bad boy.

[–]hippopotacat 1 point2 points ago

Much appreciated, good sir!

[–]slyguy183 0 points1 point ago

You were a ridiculously large 2 year old

[–]SirSandGoblin 1 point2 points ago

quick question, do you get stung a lot?

[–]hippopotacat 3 points4 points ago

Define a lot. My father usually works on a daily basis with the bees and almost never uses gloves, he gets approx. 0-3 stings daily. I don't live with my parents any longer so i don't get stung :)

[–]MadManuel 3 points4 points ago

At 0-3 stings per day, does he still feel the pain of venom?

[–]hippopotacat 4 points5 points ago

Just barely, he finds it more annoying than painful.

[–]LaoBa 2 points3 points ago

People who get stung a lot usually either get immune or hypersensitive to bee stings. Unfortunately, after about 30 stings in a month I started to become hypersensitive.

[–]SirSandGoblin 0 points1 point ago

0-3 daily would be a lot for me, i would not like that. you know, unless it was consistently the 0 part of 0-3.

[–]noodelzzz 10 points11 points ago

bees stings are designed for other insects, not for mammals. that's why they only sting you when you crush them or annoy the hell out of them like the idiot you are... :)

[–]badatclothes 14 points15 points ago

Relative to the bee's size, the stinger is quite large. Plus it injects digestive proteins/toxins. It is lethal to other insects and quite the deterrent to larger animals.

Plus all the bees in a hive are near clones. For all practical purposes it is no different than your neutrophils dying to repel bacterial invaders.

2/10

[–]Pelican_bishop 1 point2 points ago

why bees make no sense; a story of how I never learned anything about bees

[–]chris241978 19 points20 points ago

this is all you have to know about bees.

  • bees make honey
  • honey is used to make mead. (along with fruit, water and yeast)

mead is basicly wine, but made with honey instead of sugar. sugar is really hard to find in places. but you can find bees all over the place.

did you know, brewing alcohol predates agriculture. yes. be proud of your human intelligence. early man was smart enough to know that getting drunk is a higher priority than farm work.

mead is also independantly multicultural. what the fuck does that mean? it means many many cultures all over the world figured out how to make mead all on their own. it wasnt just discovered by one guy who shared the idea. why is that important? its important because drinking mead, and brewing, is a primal and significant part of what makes us HUMAN. food, water, shelter, warmth, GET DRUNK.

...and we owe it all to Bees! thank you Bees! ever hear of early cultures who were Bee-worshipers? makes more sense now huh?

TL;DR Bees help caveman get drunk. Bees good.

[–]Chipsmannen 2 points3 points ago

Some scientists/archeologists believe that we actually started to cultivate the land because of alcohol. It was much easier to brew alcohol from grains than what was available at the time, and at the same time you got food like bread and so on. So we can thank alcohol in general that we got out of the stone age! (very interesting comment of you also)

[–]ncocca 6 points7 points ago

Why don't we just ban shit that puts the punchline in the title? Clearly just downvoting it doesn't work.

[–]WTCdust 6 points7 points ago

It makes sense if you consider how closely related the bees are. A few die, but the hive lives on, propagating the genes that reside in the dead bee.

[–]SamTheGeek 4 points5 points ago

Interestingly, this comic has a major flaw - only female bees have stingers. That's because the stinger is an evolved form of the Ovipostor, the organ that insects use to lay eggs.

[–]hippopotacat 0 points1 point ago

This is actually correct, the drones do not have stingers. All worker bees are actually female.

[–]Piny 5 points6 points ago

FUCK YOU AND DONT PUT THE PUNCHLINE IN THE FUCKING TITLE!!! IS THIS A THING NOW??

[–]6times9is42 3 points4 points ago

Rehosted webcomic + Punchline in title? Dammit OP

[–]Fausto1981 2 points3 points ago

i lol'd but this makes no sense. bee's enemies are usually as big as they are, and they surely die.

[–]TheBeef33 0 points1 point ago

On another note, what kind of bees make milk?

Boobees

[–]eyeland12 2 points3 points ago

Downvote for ruining the joke

[–]demorphix 2 points3 points ago

I originally read this as "Why beeRs make no sense"

took me a few minutes to figure this out or what I was reading.

[–]felix33 1 point2 points ago

The title really ruined the joke.

[–]dont_press_ctrl-W 0 points1 point ago

Fucker. I'm sure I would have laughed so much if the punchline in the title. I've never been so angry at this dumb practice. Doesn't it write it in bir red bold letters as you post?

[–]hawleyal 0 points1 point ago

Duh, bees make honey.

[–]Lightupthenight 0 points1 point ago

For Queen and Country!

[–]lightswitch05 1 point2 points ago

Beads? BEADS!

[–]childsleaze 0 points1 point ago

... Gob's not on board.

[–]SirSandGoblin 0 points1 point ago

and yet they seem to be doing alright for themselves

[–]markman71122 0 points1 point ago

I thought this was going to be a political joke for some reason.

[–]sweettea14 0 points1 point ago

It's actually only a couple species of bees that die after stinging. There are more wasps that die after stinging. QI told me so.

[–]Sapporoham 0 points1 point ago

5/5 would sting again

[–]mojo001 0 points1 point ago

Beads?

[–]bananaskates 1 point2 points ago

It makes a lot of sense, actually. The weaponry forces the bee to be a reluctant combatant, attacking only when absolutely necessary. This makes for overall much friendlier relationships than the alternative -- which, as it turns out, is an enormous evolutionary advantage.

Also, fuck wasps.

[–]Pelican_bishop 1 point2 points ago

seriously fuck wasps.

[–]Milkthiev 0 points1 point ago

This made me think of Ender's Game.

[–]wtf81 1 point2 points ago

Only female bees sting.

[–]DrPeacemaker 1 point2 points ago

Male bees are just there to mate with the queen. And die immediately after finishing.

[–]wtf81 2 points3 points ago

a good life.

[–]cheeseinatophat 0 points1 point ago

I read this in Princess Bubblegum's voice.

[–]peifferu 1 point2 points ago

actually, it's only the female bees that sting. the males just fuck the queen all day.

[–]Armed_To_The_Teets 0 points1 point ago

[–]D-compose 1 point2 points ago

BEADS!?

[–]mcknicker 0 points1 point ago

[–]D-compose 0 points1 point ago

Old bear....he loved the honey...he never saw my bee business take off...

[–]snkater 0 points1 point ago

Til that bees are the samurais of the insect world!

[–]tyrannustyrannus 0 points1 point ago

do you mess with bees? no?

EVOLUTION WORKS!

[–]J_M_B 0 points1 point ago

I have to point out that worker bees (the ones who sting) are actually female.

[–]BishopMyriel 0 points1 point ago

Thanks for reminding me to check up on buttersafe.com

[–]Seanus4u 0 points1 point ago

I thought instantly of Stephen Jay Gould's "Pandas Thumb" chapter on the birds and the bees. he explains in great detail the reasoning behind the hive evolution.

Bee's do everything in their power, including killing themselves to pass on their genes. of course the only way to pass on their genes is to make sure the queen survives. always liked that, almost explains racism.

[–]wsfarrell 0 points1 point ago

One bee doesn't make any sense. A thousand of them can be powerfully convincing, on the other hand.

[–]Jedibean 0 points1 point ago

This made me think of every day at work.

[–]Enkmarl 0 points1 point ago

If you are too dumb to understand that a bees sole purpose of living isn't to go around stinging things then you'd probably find this comic hilarious

[–][deleted] -3 points-2 points ago

Would you rather they lived?
