This was such a good movie. If you haven't seen 'Cabin in the Woods' you should go watch it

[–]bfogarty27 82 points83 points ago

But don't read a damn thing about it, don't read any of these comments. just watch it with no prior knowledge

[–]RyoxSinfar 27 points28 points ago

What are you doing? He told you to stop. Go watch it.

[–]ReptarIsTheShit 17 points18 points ago

SPOILER ALERT

killer unicorn

[–]RyoxSinfar 9 points10 points ago

nooooo it's ruined forever

[–]Bainemo 4 points5 points ago

Spoiler: it's scary movie for nerds

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points ago

i.e. not scary and just a little bit funny

[–]allmen -2 points-1 points ago

Well well well, scary for "NERDS" eh. Well I !~ (as indigently as possible)

[–]Dardove 77 points78 points ago

I don't normally care for horror films, but I decided to watch Cabin in the Woods. It is a good movie.

[–]Freeside1 39 points40 points ago

But it isn't a good horror movie.

[–]sullythered 18 points19 points ago

It's an indictment of modern horror movies, and an accurate one. It had it's straight up scary scenes, too. The stuffed wolf head makeout scene was scarier than anything in any of the horror crap that gets made recently.

[–]Freeside1 4 points5 points ago

The problem I had with it was that it mostly just complained about how the horror genre is stagnant and gave a shitload of examples of bad horror.

These people are in the movie-making business, instead of telling us what makes a horror movie bad they should just make a good one.

[–]sullythered 8 points9 points ago

But I think they did just that. I loved the movie, and thought it was extremely imaginative. And imagination is the thing most sorely missing in the horror genre over the last 15 years.

[–]I_SNORT_CUM 39 points40 points ago

HOW DARE YOU SHARE YOUR OPINION ON REDDIT

[–]doS2wo 53 points54 points ago

Well, it's not actually horror; it's more of a self-aware comedic satire of horror. When a movie can make an audience feel terrified, laugh, and engaged in a story so out of whack, it is indeed a GOOD movie. Most importantly, it parodies horror movies of the last decade or two and portrays how ridiculously low the majority of the genre has stooped down to.

[–]typewriters305 23 points24 points ago

It's what we in the business call a pastiche of the horror genre.

What business? That would be the business of being a pretentious ass.

[–]krispwnsu 1 point2 points ago

You just made me spit out chocolate milk.

[–]etherama1 3 points4 points ago

Don't waste chocolate milk, man

[–]wiithepiiple 12 points13 points ago

It's kind of like Shaun of the Dead. It is a parody of the genre, but is still a member of the genre. It still contained all of the elements of a horror movie, especially in the last act. Yes, it deconstructs horror movies; that doesn't prevent it from being one.

[–]Thezealot 0 points1 point ago

Cabin in the Woods was the best horror movie I've seen sense Drag me to Hell. Both of these movies were "funny," but I consider both solid horror movies.

[–]wiithepiiple 0 points1 point ago

Drag me to hell played it almost completely straight. I wasn't sure how self aware it was until hindsight.

[–]I_SNORT_CUM 2 points3 points ago

I would agree that its definitely not a "horror" movie, If anything I would classify it closer to comedy than horror. Similar to my feelings on Scream 4.

[–]phqu88 0 points1 point ago

Those qualify as dark comedies I think?

[–]I_SNORT_CUM 2 points3 points ago

I wouldn't even call them dark, they are more parodies than anything else.

[–]BroadStreetElite 0 points1 point ago

The entire scream series from the very start has been a parody of the genre.

[–]Thezealot 0 points1 point ago

parodies over 3 decades of horror movies.

[–]D0mi 3 points4 points ago

How's the cum snorting working out for ya?

[–]irish711 3 points4 points ago

I'm not sure it was supposed to be a "horror" movie.

[–]AdrianBrony 2 points3 points ago

it's a parody of horror, but not necessarily a comedy parody as much as a satirical parody.

[–]skonen_blades 1 point2 points ago

Yeah a I know a few people that were disappointed in Cabin in the Woods and I thought they were insane until I found out that almost all of them were expecting a horror movie. Then I was like "Ooooh, I get it. Yeah. I would have been disappointed if I was expecting an actual horror movie."

[–]oaktown8410 0 points1 point ago

I thought of it as more of a sci-fi movie with horror elements. Sure, it was billed as a horror in previews, but I think that was more so people (who avoided the internet) could actually enjoy the twist.

[–]JkOverlord -1 points0 points ago

It shouldn't even be in the horror category, this movie will make you jump off your seat once or twice because of shitty and really awkwardly timed scares, nothing that will make you afraid.

[–]iUsedtoHadHerpes[S] 2 points3 points ago

If it caused you to jump off your seat, the timing couldn't have been too shitty or awkward.

I don't remember being scared by the movie (unless you count the uneasy suspense with the wolf make-out scene), but I do remember laughing my ass off a couple times.

[–]JkOverlord -2 points-1 points ago

No I meant moments like the intro for instance... they're talking about their Japanese counter parts and what not, and then all of a sudden the title comes up with a women screaming and then some hey dude bro guitar music followed up by Thor coming into the room.

Not saying it was complete garbage, its just shouldn't be classified as a horror movie.

[–]terranq 2 points3 points ago

The smash cut to the title screen wasn't meant as a scare, it was a callback to the old 70's horror/grindhouse movies

[–]IDoNotAgreeWithYou -2 points-1 points ago

have an upvote freeside, these redditors don't know anything.

[–]atchman25 -3 points-2 points ago

I saw where you were going with this, have an upvote.

[–]Tronaxious 11 points12 points ago

The first half was typical B horror movie bullshit but the second half is when it really started to kick in. Loved the ending.

[–]DJSlambert 10 points11 points ago

Well yeah, but that's kind of the point.

[–]AdrianBrony 6 points7 points ago

hey, I still think the speaker phone bit was probably one of the best things ever shown in a theater in the past few years.

[–]Tronaxious 2 points3 points ago

The one in the control room?

[–]AdrianBrony 6 points7 points ago

the one where the overly dramatic guy gets laughed at.

[–]wiithepiiple 3 points4 points ago

If you see two horror movies, you should see Cabin in the Woods and Behind the Mask. By far the two best horror movies I've seen ever.

[–]terranq 10 points11 points ago

I'd add Tucker and Dale as well, though that's more comedy than horror

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]snowsoftJ4C 5 points6 points ago

I can't tell if you're serious, but I'm a pretty big horror movie buff, and Cabin In The Woods is definitely in my top 5 favorite horror movies. And yes, no matter how many genres this movie bends and blends, it is a horror movie.

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]snowsoftJ4C 3 points4 points ago

Woooah there, you just went full ad hominem.

Personally, I like it because it makes fun of all those cliche horror archetypes, the very same that appeal to the teenage demographic you're talking about. So, maybe you're taking it at face value, rather than as a parody?

[–]staythepath 1 point2 points ago

It's pretty good. Talk about a sharp turn.

[–]JimmyTango 1 point2 points ago

I worked on that movie from the time it was scripted to the time it came out in theaters between two different movie studios. I saw dailies, rough cuts without fx, and sat in theaters opening weekend to see it in full glory with a real audience. This was by far my favorite visualized kill of the movie. My favorite off camera kill was the merman.

[–]bluejacket 107 points108 points ago

one word: merman

[–]SpacemanSpiff23 80 points81 points ago

Aww come on!

[–]bluejacket 35 points36 points ago

EDIT well i didn't want to spoil further, guess you guys did... SHAME ON YOU

BLOOD FOUNTAIN!

[–]landoooo 12 points13 points ago

BLOOD BLOWHOLE!

FTFY

[–]Myrandall 4 points5 points ago

Link or it didn't happen

[–]irish711 -5 points-4 points ago

It happened. It was toward the end of he movie. One of the "producers" is eaten and blood shoots out of a blowhole on the monster's back.

[–]terranq 6 points7 points ago

Made even funnier when I imagine that this was Josh Lyman's job after leaving the white house

[–]skonen_blades 1 point2 points ago

HA HA HA. Oh man thank you. Thank you so much. Too good.

[–]sillybear25 38 points39 points ago

That doesn't look like friendship...

[–]Myrandall 27 points28 points ago

NOR magic!

[–]Cold_Burrito 10 points11 points ago

We should start a letter writing campaign about this lack of friendship.

[–]torchdexto 9 points10 points ago

Pinkie went through some tough times when she thought everyone abandoned her as a friend...

[–]videogameexpert 6 points7 points ago

Is pinkie pie even a unicorn? I've watched a grand total of 6 episodes so far, but I'm pretty sure she's not.

[–]torchdexto 5 points6 points ago

hmm good point. I guess it could be rarity.

[–]RosieJo 27 points28 points ago

Such a weird movie. I went to see it thinking it was a typical horror film about a group of teenagers being killed in cliche ways. I was pleasantly surprised...

[–]oaktown8410 2 points3 points ago

Same here. Luckily I had some friends see it beforehand, so I knew not to read too much about it. The twist caught me totally off guard.

[–]Jeffs24 19 points20 points ago

Made me think of an episode of Supernatural where a similar scene appears.

[–]Flaptothejack 3 points4 points ago

Plucky Pennywhistle's!

[–]shadowjm 1 point2 points ago

And the clowns...

[–]burritoman88 1 point2 points ago

Thought of this when watching that episode!

[–]Dante897 -4 points-3 points ago

Came here to post this, you beat me by 35 minutes...

[–]thewookieempire -2 points-1 points ago

Next time, try to add to the discussion instead of saying you were thinking the same thing. That way you don't lose as much karma. Have a nice day :)

PURGE SYSTEM

[–]Ajunk 10 points11 points ago

Why is that button there? BECAUSE FUCK YOU, THAT'S WHY!

[–]AdrianBrony 3 points4 points ago

I think it makes sense. they are in an ultra-secure facility buried deep underground. If there were, say, an explosion above ground and monsters had a chance to escape uncontrolled into the real world, thousands of innocent people could die.

therefore, they purge the system into their facility so they can contain the threat and take the hit.

[–]pxds 4 points5 points ago

and, oh boy, did they contain the threat.

[–]AdrianBrony -3 points-2 points ago

well none of them probably made it outside before the giant world ending evil god woke up. oh, and, spoilers.

[–]Ajunk 2 points3 points ago

It's not supposed to make sense, even if it would. This is a Meta-Horror movie, and so of course if there's a hundred rooms of monsters there has to be a big red button that lets them all loose. Why? Rule of Cool, that's why.

[–]k_rizzle 1 point2 points ago

That was my exact same question. And answer.

[–]Domininja 28 points29 points ago

My husband loves horror movies and I usually don't, but as soon as I saw that it was a Joss movie, I begged him to go see it. Neither of us were disappointed.

[–]kinuman93 23 points24 points ago

Damn it, I miss this movie so much. Can't wait for the DVD release.

[–]Tronaxious 14 points15 points ago

It's out already.

Source: The pirate bay.

[–]ivenoideawhat 10 points11 points ago

I'm more looking forward to the special features.

[–]shniken 3 points4 points ago

...some releases include those too.

[–]kinuman93 6 points7 points ago

I want them to take my money!

[–]OddSensation 11 points12 points ago

[–]wakipaki 8 points9 points ago

[–]Hayman68 3 points4 points ago

Shut up and let them take my money!

[–]D-Skel 2 points3 points ago

I've come close to downloading it, but I found this movie so unique and hilarious that I'm actually looking forward to giving them more money when it releases on DVD and Blu-Ray.

[–]Jill4ChrisRed 2 points3 points ago

you can buy the book, which has the entire script for the film, concept art for monsters and everything. It's on amazon for like..£14? I'm not sure, but it's very good. My friend owns a copy, it's amazing.

[–]kinuman93 1 point2 points ago

...WHAT!? I'd love that! I want to be a screenwriter, this is the one screenplay i've been searching for and i've had no luck! Definitely looking for that book. Do you know the title?

[–]Jill4ChrisRed 0 points1 point ago

just Cabin in the woods, and look for the book on amazon :) it's huge

[–]kinuman93 1 point2 points ago

Found it, buying it today! Thanks!

[–]skonen_blades 1 point2 points ago

Yeah I bought it, too. It does not disappoint.

[–]stephenchip 10 points11 points ago

The scene is so much better when you hear the awesome music that accompanies it.

[–]Backwell 11 points12 points ago

Good movie. Watched it last night. A perfect mix of funny and horror. Although the ending is a bit anti-climatic.

[–]HemingwaySweater 3 points4 points ago

how is the ending to that movie in any way anti-climatic?

[–]Backwell 13 points14 points ago

I would have liked to see a better destruction of earth.

[–]HemingwaySweater 3 points4 points ago

Haha okay fair enough.

[–]schwiz -4 points-3 points ago

Needed more cthulu

[–]stutheidiot 3 points4 points ago

You people again? Shut up. Lovecraft was a hack.

[–]schwiz 0 points1 point ago

Say what? Tentacles would have been much better than a hand at the end :)

[–]Jill4ChrisRed 2 points3 points ago

not really :) especially when you look at the meaning and symbolism behind everything. It's superb!

[–]kendrahwithanh 16 points17 points ago

This was the point where my hands went up in the air and did not come down for the rest of the movie.

I was just so... happy....

[–]theresaviking 7 points8 points ago

"DOWN IN FRONT!"

[–]kendrahwithanh 2 points3 points ago

there was no one in the theater so it was cool, brah.

[–]WatchYourTone 0 points1 point ago

[–]bloodflart 13 points14 points ago

I feel like I can never look at another horror movie the same after watching this.

[–]trpnblies7 10 points11 points ago

Then the movie did its job right.

[–]fribbley 6 points7 points ago

Agreed. I feel like this movie changed every other horror movie ever.

[–]JQuick 5 points6 points ago

One of the most satisfying finales I've seen in a while. Great flick.

[–]yankeestarz 42 points43 points ago

Can someone replace the horn with a downvote and make it a downvote gif?

[–]Mavee 36 points37 points ago

Best I could do. This took me way, WAY longer than I had hoped for.

[–]ajtexasranger 6 points7 points ago

Post it as a link for some good link karma.

[–]skonen_blades 2 points3 points ago

Nice one!

[–]yankeestarz 0 points1 point ago

Wow, this is great. I want some creddit for the karma you will earn?

[–]iUsedtoHadHerpes[S] 3 points4 points ago

I thought of this, but I was just too lazy to do it. That was my original intent for this gif, to use it in conjunction with downvotes.

[–]Mavee 7 points8 points ago

[–]iUsedtoHadHerpes[S] 1 point2 points ago

[–]Alexxandros 9 points10 points ago

BRILLIANT.

[–]Sandmanifest 2 points3 points ago

Glad you already asked for this, has a chance of being seen. I want it too.

[–]GypsyDuck 3 points4 points ago

To me it looks like the gif is looped perfectly. The guy is run down, gets stabbed, and then runs some more. It's quick and unicorn filled Sisyphean tale.

[–]Domsdey 4 points5 points ago

Obligatory supernatural video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IGnmpkq2NtM

[–]iUsedtoHadHerpes[S] 1 point2 points ago

That's awesome!

I didn't know this scene was a reference to anything, but considering all the other references in the film, I'd say that was probably what they were getting at.

[–]Phockey326 1 point2 points ago

Cabin in the Woods was actually filmed back in 2009 and that Supernatural episode aired this past season so I don't think they were referencing Supernatural.

Being the big Supernatural fan I am though and watching every episode live I saw the SN ep first and immediately thought of it myself when I saw Cabin in theaters.

[–]iUsedtoHadHerpes[S] 1 point2 points ago

Ahh, ok. Thanks for clearing that up. I've never seen that show before, and I don't really know anything about it, so I was just going by the striking similarities between the clips.

Is Supernatural a show that's worth watching? I mean, judging by that clip, it looks kinda watchable, but I just assumed it might be one of those corny WB sort of Buffy the Vampire Hunter-style shows.

[–]Phockey326 1 point2 points ago

Well Cabin in the Woods was made by the people who made Buffy, you do know that right? (Joss Whedon and Drew Goddard) In fact the ending of the movie is very similar to something that happens in one of the seasons of Buffy.

I would say Supernatural is very worth watching as a fan obviously. They have serious episodes but they always throw in lots of comedy just like you see in that scene. The honest truth though is that I started watching Supernatural because I am a big Buffy and Angel fan, and it seemed like the closest show to fill the void. The shows are different enough that you could enjoy one but not the other, but if you don't enjoy the other shows I would say its not a very good sign. All 3 of them follow a similar style: An overall season storyline that usually has a start and a finish within that year, a bunch of monster of the week episodes, and a scattering of season story arc episodes throughout which usually are heavier during the beginning few and last few eps.

On the other hand, if you enjoy comedy like portrayed in that scene, by all means watch it and ignore what I just said, its plentiful throughout all 7 seasons so far.

[–]antivicarious 4 points5 points ago

I really, really wish there were multiple version of this movie in which you could see the first half with your choice of "the boxes."

[–]mnells 3 points4 points ago

This was a really phenomenal movie.

Not only was it kinda suspense-y, but it also made you think, which a lot of movies don't do anymore. It was one of those movies that after it was over, I still didn't understand it for like 15 minutes.

So good.

[–]JupitersClock 3 points4 points ago

I'll never get to see the Merman. He was SOOOOO close to blowing the Conch!

[–]CaptainGrandpa 2 points3 points ago

This movie was so unsettling, in the best possible way. This was my favorite scene.

[–]xenover 2 points3 points ago

The first half an hour was a quite typical horror movie. Fortunately it got better after that and I finally started to understand it much better.

[–]Weloq 4 points5 points ago

First 30 minutes: ugh. Must drudge through... this...

Next 30 minutes: yah it is ok I guess

Last 30 minutes: OMGWTFBESTMOVIEEVER!

[–]fingertrollin 1 point2 points ago

I started clapping in the theatre. So great.

[–]trev1691 5 points6 points ago

I hate it when people do that.

[–]The-Jerk-Store 0 points1 point ago

This is a pretty big spoiler for anyone who hasn't seen it..

[–]snowsoftJ4C 2 points3 points ago

That a unicorn appears and stabs someone? Not really.

[–]The-Jerk-Store 3 points4 points ago

Is it anywhere in the trailer? It's a spoiler. It takes the surprise out of one of those best moments in the film.

[–]herrshuster 1 point2 points ago

False. It's only a spoiler if you call attention to it. No one will remember it if you don't mention it.

[–]Waff1es 2 points3 points ago

That and it shows a guy in a lab coat, I wonder where I have seen that before in the movie. It also shows havoc being unleashed in the lab. Now why is that happening when in the beginning it looks like the lab is under control. Spoiler = yes.

[–]iUsedtoHadHerpes[S] 2 points3 points ago

Everything in this thread crossed my mind - some before posting, some after posting.

If I could edit the title, I would probably add 'spoiler' to it, but it's too late now.

While I don't really think this ruins the movie itself (unless this is what causes you to watch it, then you're sure to expect it and figure it out beforehand), it certainly does ruin the most unexpected/best scene in the movie. And I feel bad about that. :(

[–]Waff1es 1 point2 points ago

Karma makes us do terrible things.

[–]iUsedtoHadHerpes[S] 0 points1 point ago

I really just wanted to share this great scene, and I didn't think of the negative side of it until it was already getting attention. I wasn't really expecting it to take off, and I didn't even think of the karma, to be honest.

Actually, now that I think about it, I had ~100+ link karma before this post, and now, this post has more positive votes than my account has link karma - which doesn't make sense to me.

[–]Propolandante 1 point2 points ago

I forgive you

[–]Propolandante 0 points1 point ago

I just watched it last night. I loved the movie too much to care about this spoiler. There are so many good scenes, this was just one of the great ones.

[–]snowsoftJ4C -1 points0 points ago

You're correct then. It is a spoiler, but I would argue that it is a minor one. Seeing this scene out of context does not give away any plot points whatsoever, but yes, it does give away one of the funniest scenes in the movie.

[–]schwazz 3 points4 points ago

Tucker and Dale Vs Evil is another good one.

[–]Torune 1 point2 points ago

This Unicorn has run out of happy. We need to get it to Courtneypants for a happy transfusion STAT!

[–]itrainmonkeys 1 point2 points ago

So great. Just watched it yesterday. Fantastic scene.

[–]EpicMotherfucker 1 point2 points ago

Really weird but great movie indeed. The only way to make it more awesome would be an unicorn-merman hybrid. Any willing photoshoppers out there? Edit: Typo.

[–]terranq 3 points4 points ago

Here you go

Has anyone of you been chased by a fucking horse or donkey? Its pretty fucking scary...

[–]AxemanEugene 1 point2 points ago

[–]call_me_shiny 1 point2 points ago

Cabin In the Woods is hardly a horror movie. It's a satire, and it's beautiful.

[–]noddingacquaintance 1 point2 points ago

Running from a murderous beast? Run directly into a wall, turn around, and receive your award for the worst evasive maneuver ever.

[–]deros 1 point2 points ago

It's just not the same without the whimsical music that played during that scene

[–]nagem145 1 point2 points ago

i've watched this at least 6 times in the past week, and laughed my ass off each time. more people need to know about its awesomeness.

[–]r0llo_tomasi 1 point2 points ago

God damn it I love this movie.

[–]fishyguy13 1 point2 points ago

What movie is this?

[–]Nolif3gam3r 1 point2 points ago

Best movie ever

[–]ansate 1 point2 points ago

The part where the camera zooms out on the matrix of monster cages is great. There is a boomer (Left 4 Dead) in one of them.

[–]Thebluebox88 1 point2 points ago

'Cabin in the Woods'...Last 30min was not boring.

[–]dontbehayden 0 points1 point ago

Great movie. You know it's going to be good when the title sequence scares you!

[–]SleepyMage 1 point2 points ago

Awesome movie. Though, i still don't understand the unicorn. Who has killer unicorns in their nightmares?

[–]ayminole 0 points1 point ago

I love this. But it's just not quite as wonderful without the magical music in the background.

[–]Emperor_Giygas 0 points1 point ago

next season on Supernatural: Unicorns

[–]shitsfuckedupalot -2 points-1 points ago

reddit is madly in love with cabin in the woods. i think it has something to do with the pot smoking protagonist

[–]EeeeeShabutie 4 points5 points ago

Wasn't expecting Sigourney Weaver, but I love how into the sci-fi/horror scene she is.

[–]Verglas -5 points-4 points ago

"Sci-fi original movie". When I hear that on the tv, I know I'm in for the ride of my life. I just love terrible B-movies!

[–]JDNelson13 3 points4 points ago

Except that this is not from a syfy original movie. It is from Cabin in the Woods. An exceptionally good movie co-written by Joss Whedon.
