This is extremely awesome.

Excellent picture. If I may suggest one thing, though, lay off the clarity slider.

[–]cannonflake[S] 7 points8 points ago

Yeah that clarity slider kind of makes dots or pixels or something, huh? I guess I don't really know what it is supposed to do.

It controls local contrast, which can result in artifacts like the glowing edges around her hand. It's a very useful tool if used sparingly, but many amateurs overuse it.

Here, I uploaded the original photo. If any of the photo editing experts out there want to have a crack at it, go ahead. Send me the link when done, it will probably be instructive for me.

BTW there is a shadow of a plant from out of the window, that showed up right in the middle of the marble....if you were wondering what that is :)

if you are using lightroom, use the brush tool over the marble and then increase the clarity through there. that way only the marble will get the effect of the clarity and make the map show nicer.

Wasn't this exact photo submitted to r/pics months ago?

[–]cannonflake[S] 6 points7 points ago

No I took it on Saturday 8/25 (two days ago) There have been some similar ones with bubbles or drops of water or something I believe, but I haven't seen one with a marble before.

Great concept! I really like it. =)

A few suggestions:

  • better lighting. The hand is too dark, and in trying to compensate for that, you've really accentuated the noise.

  • include more of the map in the background. I'm not sure how you might accomplish this optically, since I'm not familiar with what kind of focal length a marble has. :P My gut feeling is to move both the marble and the camera farther away from the map, and use a longer focal-length lens on the camera. Just experiment and find out what works!

  • make the marble a larger part of the composition. Moving the marble closer to the camera, or keeping it in the same relative position while using a longer lens, would accomplish this. (However, if you keep everything where it is and increase your lens's focal length, you will get even less of the map in your background, which is counterproductive to my previous point. Just keep experimenting!)

  • a bit more sharpness would go a long way! If you use more light (flash or continuous light) then you can use a shorter shutter speed which may give you more sharpness. Or you may be limited by your lens. It's hard to tell since I don't know what gear you're using and how much this photo was cropped. Regardless, it's probably hard to improve the sharpness a lot inside the marble, because I doubt the marble is optical quality glass. But you can improve the sharpness of the marble's edge, and the edges of your daughter's hand.

Once again, really cool photo! If you decide to try again with some of these suggestions in mind, I would love if you PM'ed me with a link to your new take. =)

Thanks, yeah maybe I will try all that. I tried a few shots with a bubble instead of a marble, but I couldn't get the reflection in the bubble very much.

Maybe somebody else will take a crack at fixing it up a bit, but unfortunately I think all of my suggestions aren't going to be much good in post.

Here is my wallpaper version

I cleaned up that shadow too :)

Is your daughter older? She has some very developed hands.

Great picture.

[–]DJ131 -1 points0 points ago

Why did you edit it with paint? it looks like it was created using the "spraycan" tool in MS Paint.

[–]cannonflake[S] 0 points1 point ago

Because there was a shadow of a plant running right down the mid-Atlantic rift....http://imgur.com/P0I0j

Your daughter has some manly hands.

I love this. The first thing that came to mind was "It's a small world (after all)."

Please take the pro tips on image quality and repost with a link to give credit. I would really like to share this fairly :)

[–]keepsake -2 points-1 points ago

I'm surprised that no one called you out yet. This picture has been floating around for a while. Karma thief

[–]DutchPrisoner 2 points3 points ago

You might be referring to pics that someone took similar to this of a water droplet in front of a map? Here: http://img.gawkerassets.com/img/17f15lip3f0wjjpg/original.jpg

[–]keepsake 0 points1 point ago

thanks. that's why I didn't raise my hand in class.

[–]concussedYmir -1 points0 points ago

How the hell can you steal karma?

[–]cannonflake[S] 0 points1 point ago

Not true, I took it on Saturday, so it's been floating around for 2 days....

[–]keepsake 0 points1 point ago

my bad. Awesome picture.

[–]THE_BOKEH_BLOKE -1 points0 points ago

Great shot, very inventive.

I would have liked to have seen the hand completely silhouetted, lending more impact to the marble.

Very clever photo!

i already upvoted this!
