Plit-vitz-za lakes. Just got back from there, coincidentally. They used to let you swim in the water (which is beautifully clear mountain glacial run off water I think) up until a few years ago when they decided the chemicals we rub on our bodies for various reasons were detrimental to the ecosystem there. Was a great disappointment that I missed that opportunity by a few years, beautiful none the less. There are also an enormous amount of gorgeous smaller waterfalls throughout a forested trail hike that ended at a beautiful lake. Alright, I'm done.

[–]Fuco1337 22 points23 points ago

it's more like plit-vee-chke (ch as in check, ee sound but short). Ah, to hell with this, here's IPA: /plîtv̞itʃkaː jɛzɛ̌ra/

[–]Dafuzz 6 points7 points ago

The croatian consonants are pretty hard to wrap your head around for an english speaker, at least to me. I was trying to convey a way to say it so a native speaker could understand what he was trying to say, but yeah, that's the phonetic way to spell it, you're correct.

[–]Fuco1337 10 points11 points ago

Oh yes, I feel your pain. English is really terrible in this matter. Pretty much any other language is going to be quite difficult to pronounce correctly. Especially slavic languages. I feel that english speakers doing russian is even worse than russians trying english :D

/native slavic speaker

[–]Rhapsodie 7 points8 points ago

Croatian doesn't really have strange phonology, at least not for English speakers. Pretty plain consonants, except unaspirated stops and the contrasting affricates, nothing weirder than Spanish. Maybe its subtle tone and words like crkva appear strange but are actually no weirder than bird.

Okay, Russian I get-- palatalization and vowel reduction take a bit getting used to. But BCS is pretty much as easy as you're going to get in terms of pronunciation. Props for your detailed IPA!

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]Rhapsodie 3 points4 points ago

Of course, don't worry, I know. I'm a linguistics grad student in slavic linguistics, I was just encouraging Mr. Fuco1337 to have a wider perspective; in the grand scheme of things BCS is factually not that phonologically alien to English.

[–]Fuco1337 0 points1 point ago

Oi, I'm doing something similar, but on compsci side of things. Langauge processing, data mining from text etc. :P

To paraphrase one famous man: Language is interesting, and if you don't agree, you can fuck off!

As per croatian, you're probably right, I only understand it passively. But when I think about Russian, Polish, Czech, Slovak those are, from my experience, very difficult to get. And I know few guys who learn it, and also you can find plenty on the internet. Especially Slovak, Russian digraphs ('ie', 'ia', 'iu' combos) are nightmare even for fellow slavs.

Always good to see another lingust (or something similar). And, are you slavic or just interested in the langauge family?

[–]Rhapsodie 0 points1 point ago

Language is interesting, and if you don't agree, you can fuck off!

Amen, brotha.

Right on about the other Slavs, yes. Not Slavic myself, but 5-going-on-6 years of uni study of the family.

Good on you for pursuing CL, that is truly the wild west frontier of ling where a lot of really exciting advances are happening right now. I myself want to work on stochastic modelling of intonation for text-to-speech systems, but it's a little tough going. Best of luck!

[–]ohmaaan -1 points0 points ago

What a strange degree, what made you choose this if you don't mind me asking?

[–]Rhapsodie 6 points7 points ago

I definitely don't mind, it's my life's ambition! Well, the degree is on paper "linguistics", but just like "math", in grad school one does not broadly study the base subject "math", he specializes and studies manifolds, number theory, etc., likewise I specialize. I am more interested in syntactic/morphological phenomena (word order and word composition, you might recognize as case/noun declension problems) than phonology/phonetics (sounds) and Slavic languages offer enough morphosyntactic puzzles for a lifetime of research and investigation.

Anyways, not a lot of people know that a lot of academic research goes into making Siri or Google Translate work convincingly, fewer still know that that research is linguistics, an active and exciting field of study. And we still have an unimaginable amount of work to do.

[–]ohmaaan 0 points1 point ago

Thanks for the reply, yeah I can definitely see what you mean after how explained some of that, it peaked my interest as well. People take speech so for granted and forget were just making noises at each other it's really quite amusing when you think about it.

[–]ctolsen 9 points10 points ago

Okay, so...

You have a C. And an S. And a Z.

These have a variation: C and Č. S and Š. Z and Ž.

The base letter is simple enough. S and Z are the same as in English, the C is [ts] (like ts in cats). Then the variation:

  • Č is /tʃ/, or the "ch" in charm. An example in Croatian which should be simple enough is sendvič (sandwhich).
  • Š is /ʃ/, or the s in ship. Croatian: šampon (shampoo).
  • Ž is /ʒ/, or something like the g in mirage. Croatian: plaža, meaning beach, close to many other European languages.

The C has a last variation, Ć, which is a bit worse. It's kind of a midpoint between C and Č, a lighter version of Č. There's not really a sound like that in English. If you can't do it, people will probably understand you quite well if you use Č. Almost all last names use it, so when you see a "Milosevic", know that the C is really a Ć.

Simple enough, really: Just take the original letter and pronounce it while eating. There you go.

(Edit, last tips: If you see "lj", pronounce it in the back of your mouth like in million. Sounds pro. Try ljeto, which is summer. Also, Croatian also has the best universal swear word ever, at least as universal as "fuck", which is jebiga -- accent the e. It can be used as "fuck it", "fuck that guy", "screw this", "this thing sucks", "fuck!" in amazement, and so on.)

[–]miran1 0 points1 point ago

Try ljeto, which is summer.

FTFY

[–]ctolsen 0 points1 point ago

Oops. Thanks.

[–]virtyy 1 point2 points ago

No its not as in check, its just a c, as in (s)cience. Its Pleet-weet-c-kah Yehzaera.

[–]Fuco1337 2 points3 points ago

No it's not... And there's no 'c' or 'tʃ' sound in 'science' anyway.

The sound is voiceless palato-alveolar affricate.

[–]virtyy 0 points1 point ago

Yeah you know better than an actual Croatian/Serbian right?

[–]Quicksilver_Johny -1 points0 points ago

Thanks. It's strange how much easier IPA is to understand and pronounce.

[–]foreverthinkingofyou[S] 6 points7 points ago

Wow, I'm so incredibly jealous right now! Are there nice places to stay though while you visit? too bad about the no swimming thing, it looks so inviting. skinny-dipping here while on honeymoon...uncheck

[–]Dafuzz 10 points11 points ago

Zadar was absolutely gorgeous, the dollar/euro has pretty substantial buying power but not ridiculously so. The coast is gorgeous, and most of the country is within a 5 hour bus ride (which is also quite inexpensive). I went to Krk, which is kind of a summer-town, but it was awesome and the people were great. Oh, and most people under the age of 30-40 speak english as the lingua franca, with those who don't speacking most likely German/Russian. And also, to a croatian, everything is the serbians fault :P

[–]listeningwind42 2 points3 points ago

Croat here. My dad and I always blame the Serbs when anything goes wrong, regardless of what it is. It's just in jest for us, but I think it might be a bit more real over there. We come from Mali Losinj, which is the neighboring island to Krk. Actually took the ferry from Krk when we visited. Hope you had a good trip--its an awesome place.

[–]tikky30 3 points4 points ago

Baš sam prije tjedan-dva bio na Lošinju i moram ti reć da je otok jeben!

[–]listeningwind42 2 points3 points ago

Should have clarified--I'm Croatian American, mad at my dad for never teaching me the language. He translated for me though and laughed. Yeah there isn't much going on on it...

[–]foreverthinkingofyou[S] 0 points1 point ago

That is so cool! Any tips for me when I head down there? Good phrases to remember in a pinch? I just mastered the name of the place and I'm feeling ambitious :)

[–]listeningwind42 1 point2 points ago

He's in bed now, I'll ask him tomorrow, but he probably won't since he really only talks an old dialect with my grandparents (linguistic islands stagnate and dont develop with the rest of the language). But I will tell you a funny story he told me that relates:

One time he was traveling in Croatia by bus (which as mentioned earlier is pretty common). He had a good deal of stuff and my mom with him (don't remember if they were married yet), and the bus driver was none to pleased. As he is taking the stuff off the bus for my dad from the bay, he started swearing in Serbo Croat about the stupid american tourists and all their useless fucking shit all over the place. When he was done my dad just says in Serbo-Croat "I hear you dude, they fucking suck," tips him, and walks away with the bags. The guy never knew what hit him.

[–]listeningwind42 1 point2 points ago

Sorry took me a while to get back to you again. My dad is not too confident with his ability to offer key phrases. The only thing I have to say for you is to enjoy the espresso. people drink it all the time over there. It's very social, and pretty chill--you don't talk business until you've finished. It's common after dinner and in the midafternoon as well. People put grappa (locally rakija) or sambuca or anisette in their espresso pretty frequently too. I personally prefer anisette because it mixes better than the more syrupy sambuca. Also, rakija is delicious, if you like really strong brandy. Cheers!

[–]guymandude -1 points0 points ago

Most people under 25 or 30 won't know too much English unless they work in a touristy job, also I've never met any Croatia that speaks russian. About the Russian thing what makes you say that? Genuinely curious

[–]Dafuzz -1 points0 points ago

Around the coast, all the cabbies who didn't speak english would ask us if we speak german or russian. I'm guessing maybe there were serbian or something.

[–]guymandude 0 points1 point ago

Hmm that's weird.

[–]foreverthinkingofyou[S] -4 points-3 points ago

Serbians?

[–]Dafuzz -1 points0 points ago

Croatian, Serbia, Montenegro and Bosnia used to be Yugoslavia, but broke up during the Homeland Wars (Yugoslavian Civil War) which was largely instigated by Slobedan Milosevic. There were atrocities commited on both sides, but largely by the Serbians, and as such, the Croatians hold a pretty big resentment against the Serbians (moreso in the older population). Honestly, the only real difference between the two is that Serbia used the Cyrillic alphabet and Croatians use Latin, apart from where their ethnicities originated from mostly. It was an in joke in our travel group over there that whenever anything went wrong it was the Serbians fault.

[–]boborg 1 point2 points ago

you mean other nice places in croatia? well, it mostly depends on what you're interested in...if you're into historical stuff, you can visit towns like pula, zadar, šibenik, split or dubrovnik, those are all very old towns (the most popular ones), and they all have very very old buildings in the town core, like centuries old, a lot of nice things to see! for a nice peaceful vacation i would recommend you go to some of the islands, Vis, Mljet, Krk, Lošinj, Hvar, because there aren't much tourists there (in comparisson to the coast). Hop on over to /r/croatia if you need any more information

[–]foreverthinkingofyou[S] 0 points1 point ago

Thanks! I will!

[–]turkletom 1 point2 points ago

I've been there a few years ago and let me tell you the swimming was, like, the the best part of it all.

The bottom of the lakes are made of huge slippery boulders: you could stand on one of them in knee deep water, take a step and have 15 feet of blue below you. In the deeper parts you could see fish the size of your thighs. (They were really friendly too, swimming up to people.)

It was amazing with people jumping of off the lower falls ad others holding impromptu swimming competitions against the currents.

[–]Louiemonte 3 points4 points ago

I got back a week ago. It was amazing. Here are some more pics if you want to see them.

[–]foreverthinkingofyou[S] 0 points1 point ago

awwww, thank you so much for showing me those! Of course now I just want to go even more!

[–]turkletom 0 points1 point ago

I think that duck is being followed. By fish.

[–]foreverthinkingofyou[S] 0 points1 point ago

So you posted this to make me sooooo jealous or to help me fantasize while I visit? Both worked pretty well :)

[–]AlexPKC 0 points1 point ago

Well the Adriatic coast with thousand years old city cores are just half an hour to hour ride from there, so you could be staying on the coast and just hopping there for a visit :)

[–]pppjurac 0 points1 point ago

Water is not from glacial sources, as there are none glaciers in Croatia. Geology is karstic with lots of water in that area.

[–]mightychinchilla 0 points1 point ago

travertine everywhere!

[–]seancanada 3 points4 points ago

Why not allow people to shower beforehand?

Amazing looking place.

[–]foreverthinkingofyou[S] 0 points1 point ago

Ya I'm with you on this one! You should go ask! ;)

[–]mars20 -1 points0 points ago

It's also where the (at least in germany) famous Winnetou movies (Karl May) were produced. Beautiful scenery, just astonishing!

Here is a short movie in english where you can hear how it is pronounced, more or less ;)

[–]Drakan290 1 point2 points ago

Opposite. You can swim in Krka but not in Plitvice

[–]Melnorme 0 points1 point ago

So, armed guards and mandatory tour guides not pictured?

[–]little_joe 1 point2 points ago

Just went here 2 weeks ago while roadtripping across Croatia and Bosnia and there was a group of JerseyShore-esque Italian kids running around in swim suits yelling and hopping into whatever lake/pool they could easily get into. It's a national park, but it's definitely not managed very well.

[–]foreverthinkingofyou[S] 1 point2 points ago

You give me hope! Thanks so much! Now what are the odds my skinny dipping bucket list item will fly?

[–]Redwraithvienna 0 points1 point ago

There is also the Problem with the Landmines (Or at least there was the Problem). The Lakes are close to the border and the river that feeds them is a border river upstream. It was heavily mined during the war and every now and then a mine gets washed into the lakes. I think they fished most out but I guess some could still be there and they want to be sure that no tourist blows himself up

[–]foreverthinkingofyou[S] 0 points1 point ago

Yikes! That's good to know!

[–]Redwraithvienna 0 points1 point ago

Its not a huge problem as far as i know. Just a reminder that this was a war zone 10 years ago.

[–]Homer69 0 points1 point ago

To go with OPs title. A rose by any other name would smell as sweet

[–]mutationstation -3 points-2 points ago

You're not making a big enough deal about the obvious splendor here. Pretentious dick! FUCK.

[–]foreverthinkingofyou[S] 23 points24 points ago

Honeymoon spot, check.

[–]Drunky_Brewster 17 points18 points ago

This is a park approximately two hours into the countryside from Zagreb, the capitol of Croatia. The way to get here is by bus and although there are plenty of busses from Zagreb to Plitvice the problem is your return. Depending on the day it's possible that you will stand out on the side of the road in the middle of nowhere trying to wave a bus down to take you back to Zagreb, but seeing as most of the busses are full it takes forever. Most of the time they won't even stop.

There are three hotels that range from motel to almost hotel and there is dining at the nicest hotel and a restaurant for all three that opens in the evening with a firepit grill. It sounds great but it's national park great, at best, and continental breakfast at the Motel 6 at the worst.

This was actually a location we visited on our honeymoon, however I'm glad that it was one of many. As a solo destination it's beautiful but a LOT of work and I wouldn't recommend it, as part of a trip through Eastern Europe it's a must see and you should totally go there. Just made sure your bride to be is adventurous!

[–]foreverthinkingofyou[S] 10 points11 points ago

Lol, I am the bride to be actually :) And I am super adventurous! Thanks for all the advice and I agree with the one-of-many stops idea. Where else did you go?

[–]Drunky_Brewster 16 points17 points ago

I was the bride too :-) We spent 28 days and started in Prague then to Munich for Oktoberfest, Venice, Croatia, Vienna, Budapest and then finished in Istanbul. The most amazing month of my life. We went by train all the way to Budapest and then flew to Istanbul. I suggest traveling in September, just after high season but still nice and warm. Plus, fall colors.

[–]foreverthinkingofyou[S] 3 points4 points ago

That sounds like a plan! You are a genius :)

[–]LadyGoldenLake 2 points3 points ago

Yes! to traveling in Septemper! Beautifull nights, warm weather and lots of beautifull landscapes!

[–]Louiemonte 2 points3 points ago

If you end up doing this I stayed at Hotel Antunovic in Zagreb and it was great!

[–]Duncans_pumpkin 0 points1 point ago

It has a very nice campsite just a stones throw away if you have camping equipment. I didn't find it too hard to get a bus either but remember to bring along plenty of food and water its a long journey to zadar or zagreb. Oh and it is very very busy later on hit the park early.

[–]waxjar 2 points3 points ago

We were recommended to take a bus back at ~2 hours before the last bus came. Busses will indeed just not stop if they're full or not come at all.

Apart from the schedule (we had to wait 30-45 minutes), we had no problems going back to Zagreb.

If you really want to go swimming, go for it. Search a remote place and swim a bit. Officially it's forbidden, but there are no fines. Rangers will just tell you to get out of the water. It's really nice to swim there.

[–]foreverthinkingofyou[S] 0 points1 point ago

Yes! Sounds like a plan, thank you!

[–]chris2209 2 points3 points ago

My girlfriend and I were warned about the bus situation so made sure we were at the stop in plenty of time and the bus didn't bus. However a minibus taxi drove past the stop and took 7 of us back for less than the cost of the bus in half the time! I imagine that it is a common occurrence!

[–]guiscard 1 point2 points ago

The coast south of there is pretty amazing too. Zagreb isn't that interesting, but you can fly in and out of Zadar which is beautiful. We stayed on Korcula for a week and in Dubrovnik for a few days (which is amazing, but a bit too Disneylandesque in August for my taste).

[–]foreverthinkingofyou[S] 0 points1 point ago

I love Disneyland! Disneylandesque meaning?

[–]guiscard 0 points1 point ago

Insane crowds from the cruise ships. Little 'historic' wooden ships that sail around the town, and men in renaissance costumes marching through town playing drums. Theatrical I guess you could call it.

[–]h2ojunkie42 1 point2 points ago

My wife and I started in Venice for our Honeymoon. Went down the coast of Italy to Ancona to take the ferry to Split. Explored all the way down the Croatian coast to Dubrovnik as well as checking out the island of Hvar. Then back up to the Plitvice Lakes National Park. Then we had to get to Zagreb to get a train to Ljubljana Slovenia. Then back to Venice to fly back to the west coast in the US.

[–]foreverthinkingofyou[S] 0 points1 point ago

hmmmm....Would you recommend this more then the previously mentioned honeymoon idea?

[–]h2ojunkie42 0 points1 point ago

If you have time, I would try to explore Italy a little more. We really focused on Croatia. Slovenia was really nice to, wish we could have checked out some of the smaller towns and not just the capital. My wife loved Venice the best. She liked the streets and especially the doors as you can see here

[–]Maxrdt 19 points20 points ago

Bigger Picture that is actually bigger:

http://www.waterfall-pictures.net/plitvice-32.jpg

[–]Othy 1 point2 points ago

Now see, I would love to spend a few hours just sitting right there either on that walkway or on the falls themselves. But I bet you would have to keep moving to let others through...

[–]eelmaiden 4 points5 points ago

I have recurring dreams set in a place like this. With pink roses. And mermaids.

[–]JakeSanchard 0 points1 point ago

Like this? EDIT: No mermaids :(

[–]eelmaiden 0 points1 point ago

strange and dreamlike, like the video, but imagine the rock formations the water was flowing over were pieces of ancient ruins, and picture the roses like this - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lsDYtc_HakU

that's a clip from "little nemo's adventures in slumberland" which is a fricking rad movie that takes place in a dream world.

[–]EdenBlade47 0 points1 point ago

Pleet-veech-ka Yeh-ze-rah. Lots of nice little spots like this in southeastern Europe.

[–]foreverthinkingofyou[S] 1 point2 points ago

Thank you for the pronunciation help. I am sitting here practicing this over and over. Pleet-Veech-Ka, Yeh-no dang it! I'll keep trying :)

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points ago

So many tourists...

[–]ObfuscateThis 5 points6 points ago

Congratulations on your success with this post. I guess you just squeeze by on the community rules since the original post of this picture was 9 months ago. But you:

  • failed to post the source (thanks kevinpadillac)
  • posted a smaller resolution (you can search using the search box on the right)
  • included a lame title (most likely why it's doing so well)
  • failed to credit the author (okay, it's watermarked)

If these kinds of violations are going to be allowed simply because it gained a lot of upvotes, this subreddit will just turn to crap and someone will have to make a new subreddit for nice landscape pictures. After all, that's why this subreddit was started.

[–]foreverthinkingofyou[S] 0 points1 point ago

I apologize it was my first post ever so I did my best. Thanks for letting me know the rules though and I will keep them in mind for the future. This has been a successful post though and extremely helpful.

agreed.

Plitvice

[–]Just_another_man 0 points1 point ago

Looks beautiful. I would love to stop at the top and climb down until I find a nice little spot where I am comfortable and don't get wet. Then just sit there and enjoy water flowing all around me. Maybe read a book and take a nap.

What's amazing is that this photograph makes the place appear much more dramatic than it actually is. Stunned by the beauty of this photo, I Googled for more and was sorely disappointed by the results. An apt example of photography as an art form.

Why am I not there?

[–]Shouldknowbetter 1 point2 points ago

As an ex German ( immigrated to Oz over twenty years ago) and growing up with the Karl May Winnetou movies, the picture reminded me of those movies, mwhich were filmed in the former Yugoslavia. Films like "der Schatz im Silbersee" had scenery just like it. Absolutely stunning.

[–]ijontichy 1 point2 points ago

The filming of most of the Winnetou films took place in Paklenica national park, which is not that far from this picture (maybe 70km).

[–]jazavchar 0 points1 point ago

Ok, now try to say škafiškafnjak.

[–]foreverthinkingofyou[S] 0 points1 point ago

Haha. NO. I'm lucky to have come this far! I may pull a tongue muscle trying that out!

[–]greenzyme 1 point2 points ago

Plee-fiht-zuh. Saw a documentary on pbs about this place once.

[–]LittleDinamit 1 point2 points ago

One of the best thing about it is that every season it's a different kind of beautiful. This would be Spring/Summer.

In Fall, everything turns brown and orange, and there are leaves in the water, it looks a bit different.

In Winter, it's even better. Everything is frozen. Frozen lakes, waterfalls and overall snowy wonderland beauty. Hard to walk around though, the paths get slippery.

[–]shaggorama 1 point2 points ago

For scale, those are tiny little people over on the far right.

No, it absolutely makes the picture less amazing, excuse me, fewer amazing. How could you think, for even one second, that you wouldn't spoil the beauty of that picture for everyone by not being able to pronounce the name. I can't believe it, all you do is think of yourself and no one else.

[–]viborg -2 points-1 points ago

It just pisses me off to no end knowing that there will always be someone out there that thinks that going to Croatia for vacation is an awful idea.

This kind of thinking must be unhealthy.
