Really, the reason why it's so upsetting is that parts of something so familiar, the human face, don't match up with what they're supposed to be doing. It's like when you photoshop the eyes and mouth of people upside down, or when you're on a boat and what you're seeing doesn't match what your inner ear's telling you. Part of it, around the eyes, looks real and hasn't been messed with, but it's the redrawn mouth with the arms that really gets you.

My mom and I used to play this "game". One of us would say, "Let's do the face!"

One person lays down, like on the floor at the foot of the bed or beside the sofa. The other person situates themselves so that the person on the floor's head is upside down below them.

Person 1 >-->-O O-<--< Person 2

Person 1 is looking up. Person 2 leaning over person one looking down.

It takes a minute for your eyes to adjust. At first, your brain makes you see the face rightside up, like it's fighting your eyes. Then, you suddenly see a bizarre, freaky face. I think it's your brain not knowing what to do with the information. If the person opens her mouth or blinks heavily, it's really freaky.

We used to do this, then someone screams, "AH! I can't take it! Weird!" and launches into a hysterical laughing fit.

Actually, I can sort of make out what's happening with the nose and mouth with the makeup. I actually cannot figure out the eyes. Maybe it's just the lighting, but they appear to be matte textured like makeup.
