It's called a Port-A-Ledge.

[–]optikal801 15 points16 points ago

Precisely. A pic in its intended environment

Look at the size of that haul bag.

I assumed it would be expensive. Is this about right for one of these? ALso, they seem to be way too heavy for me to be worth backpacking at 19 pounds.

[–]cbleslie 7 points8 points ago

Correct. This is why you use a hammock instead.

[–]fidler 4 points5 points ago

That's what I use now, but there's no denying the fun factor if this was practical.

[–]cbleslie 0 points1 point ago

Indeed.

They're sleeping in a bear bag!

how the hell do you get into this thing? or out?

i do want one though.

Usually these are used in climbing. You clip two carabiners into two really strong bolts and hang it from that. Then you can easily get down into it.

Not sure about where they have it hanging, but I am guessing it is only a few feet from the groundl

wake up with a lot of mosquito bites on your ass.

With the right ropes and setup you should be fine. I've seen people do that, but on the side of a cliff face.

A few things:

1 What's wrong with a much less expensive normal tent?

2 I would expect it's going to spin, bounce, and rock all night long. Any wind or movement inside the tent is going to shake it around, and if you don't find a good limb to support the 200 to 500 lbs inside it, the whole thing's going to bounce wildly. If the weight isn't distributed evenly inside (like someone gets out or rolls to the middle, it's going to slope to one side and pendulum around.

3 Some of those issues could be solved with some guy lines, but it's already going to take twice as long to set up.

4 All this for what? (see question 1)

I suspect it's very purpose built to be placed against a cliff side where it wouldn't see most of those problems and would be the only solution.

500 lbs = 226.8 kilograms

I have one.

Seriously. I bought a used portalege, established an anchor about 60' off the ground in a tree, and hauled the ledge up there. I am still in the process of tethering the sides of the ledge (the freehanging ledge that you see in this photo would sway in a very unsettling fashion if you were to shift your weight at all), and I will be adding a rain fly soon. If I remember to, I'll post pictures here when I'm done.

Please do, it sounds like a great setup!

[–]Leporidae -5 points-4 points ago

i poop out of that

[–]apathetic_interest 4 points5 points ago

You don't use a poop tube? Thanks from everyone after you.

[–]Leporidae -1 points0 points ago

i poop in the tube and then the poop comes out of the tube? do i have to put it up my butt? if it's a tube does the poop go right through? what's the point of the tube? i would google this but i'm scared.
