As an atheist living in Arkansas, I've been told numerous times that for being bisexual I am "on a fast track to hell, ain't ya, boy?" numerous times. I can't even tell them who I really am as an atheist. I have to sit in some bullshit church while they blare christian rock they actually think my generation likes. I tried to be religious, I did, but the shit just plain didn't work. Trust me, this post could never capture the full awfulness of realizing that God is a fairy tale whilst living in the deep south. You are treated like you killed, fucked, and ate a room full of kittens with mittens.
(Edit: Add bisexuality, and you are in imminent danger. Seriously, kids get the shit kicked out of them by the football team for that here. It happened to one poor bastard already. And he is really nice. Cool hair too.)

I feel ya man. Though i havent told most people. I havent even told my wife. Not sure how she'd react. So I still go to church every sunday. But I run the sound system so I get to sit in an office and play on my phone the whole time.
[–]ironmanthing 6 points7 points8 points 1 month ago
holy shit...i run the sound system and one camera (alternating weeks) for my church...you haven't told your wife. i havent really ever had a relationship but similar religious views (or lack completely thereof) would definitely be a factor in my relationship choosing...does this make me shallow or would this be acceptable? i would feel that she would try to get me to be something i'm not.
[–]irnec 6 points7 points8 points 1 month ago
Religious views are not a shallow criterion when it comes to dating.
[–]ghostfox1_gfaqs 2 points3 points4 points 1 month ago
They're pretty damn important.
[–]Jukn 4 points5 points6 points 1 month ago
I've been married 13 years and its only been in the last year so that I really stopped believing. So going into the relationship there werent any differences. we actually went to the same church before getting together. So from her perspective nothing has really changed.
I don't think it is shallow at all to see religious views as criteria for prospective dating material. Had I been an atheist when we first got together, I would have told her and we could have went from there. As it stands, I love her and my kids and don't want to do anything to jeapardize that. i don't know that she would take it that far, but I also don't want to find out.

Maybe, our children's generation will not have problems like these in their future :(
[–]Jtcor 3 points4 points5 points 1 month ago
It's a bit late for us. My friend was sexually harassed because she was agnostic and wasn't in skirts like all the other girls in her school, but the 3 guys who did it got their asses kicked the next day by every guy she knew who didn't hate her
[–]ironmanthing 0 points1 point2 points 1 month ago
it's not too late for my generation to teach love and compassion for others to our children. we are shaping further generations.
[–]ussr577 2 points3 points4 points 1 month ago
Im 15 and I was taught evolution in a Christian grade school where in religion class you are being taught creationism, while in science you are watching Bill Nye videos, and all the kids realize that these contradict each other, but are too young to give a fuck. I continued loving science, and the questioning attitude that science gave me led me into questioning the bible when i actually starting reading the damn thing, (unlike most christians), and here i am now. Love you all :P
[–]W00ster 0 points1 point2 points 1 month ago
This is unfamiliar territory for me, I've been an atheist since birth, so were my parents and grand parents and my now ex-wife. When I was in the military, we discovered one guy who was religious and he also turned out to be a kleptomaniac. I also had one religious guy in my class in high school and he never took part in the celebrations anyway!
[–]theycallmestew 0 points1 point2 points 1 month ago
You're living a lie man.
[–]stromm 0 points1 point2 points 1 month ago
My parents forced me to go to a Lutheran Church school (Central Ohio) for sixth grade. I had to go to church every Sunday too. I actually became an acolyte (someone who sits up front and lights/puts out the candles.
It was either that or constantly have my parents poke at me to stay awake.
The pastor was a great guy. I think I fell asleep every Sunday, sitting right up there in front and the middle. The other kid would always get pissed and bitch to the pastor and assistant (his dad and also school principal).
The pastor thought it was funny. He accepted that I was/am an atheist and never pushed religion on me. I did my "job" and he left it at that.
The principal though was a total dick and so was the "science" teacher. They actively let other kids make fun of me and sometimes joined in. I can't count how many times I was called "fish boy" or "ape kid". What made it so sweet was that they didn't actually bother me at all.
I was asked to not come back for seventh grade... I was negatively influencing too many other kids :)

im in little rock and am also an atheist...which section of the hell train are you on...I'm in row 6B...lol...but seriously i wish some of my co-workers would just awaken the fuck up from this fantasy world in which they live...
ADDED: in response to alternate lifestyles in Arkansas...i was always the skinny short nerdy kid, i got hazed all the time from middle school to high school, I've gotten picked on for wearing the clothes i like, watching cartoons, playing card games, being different and more "urban" and not into the whole "hunting and outdoors redneck" thing definitely made relationships with girls impossible...oh yeah and since i didn't own a truck i therefore by default had no genitalia.
EDIT: fixed some spelling
[–]RavixTheDreamer 3 points4 points5 points 1 month ago
It's like living in a live re-enactment of every Call-of-Duty Online match. So much screaming and calling people jews and faggots and bitches... It's awful!
(FYI: I am not anti-semitic, nor do I curse like that.)
[–]ironmanthing 1 point2 points3 points 1 month ago
it's positively atrocious. almost pisses me off as much as all the racist obama hate stickers i see on cars
[–]RavixTheDreamer 2 points3 points4 points 1 month ago
Ooh, boy you'd hate my dad. He clapped when he saw the "I learned all I needed to about Islam on 9/11." bumper sticker. He, and many i know, are bigoted beyond belief. And they still believe. I'm not a fan of Obama's policies, but I can't even comprehend how one can put those things on their truck.
[–]MorayWheel 2 points3 points4 points 1 month ago
Funny, a lot of people might as well have learned about their OWN religion from a bumper sticker.
it's not always the messages it's the hate against the "leader" (in " b/c leader may sound dictator-y but i don't intend it that way) of the country, the leader who is trying to look out for Americans as a whole, it's like they think he's only going to help democrats or something...
[–]fellow_arkansan 5 points6 points7 points 1 month ago
I made this account to respond to RavixTheDreamer elsewhere in the thread, but I'm curious about your experience as well. I've lived in Arkansas my entire 28 years of life, and I've never experienced anything of the sort. Again, I'm not calling your details into question, just letting you know that there is another side to living in the south.
I know a handful of people who are very vocal about their very fundamental beliefs, I know plenty of atheists, and believe it or not I know plenty of great religious people (of varying religions, not just Christianity) who just want to live their lives the same as you or I.
I think at the end of the day, you have to make a conscious choice as to who you associate with. We're never going to be part of a society where everyone believes exactly the same thing. There's always going to be shitty people, and there's always going to be good people. Religious and non-religious alike. If you're still a minor living at home, your options may well be limited. But just remember there's light at the end of the tunnel.
[–]ironmanthing 2 points3 points4 points 1 month ago*
i live in little rock which is more accepting of alternate lifestyles, religions, race, and other things but as you migrate further from little rock things start to get more "traditional". people i work with come from all walks of life. some i feel comfortable enough with to be open about my atheism, others knowing my theistic beliefs would be very detrimental to my career situation. my uncle(/boss & president of company) is very anti-obama, anti immigrants, anti-gay, choice, basically he's a republican...you know the hate email forwarding type...it's very difficult to have conversations at parties with his family...they are all super religious, i just don't fucking buy it...any of it...how can i be related to people who honestly believe some old ass stories from a book.
*stepping off soapbox
personal experiences with atheism will vary according to location and interaction with other people, hate is everywhere and can be found in all walks of life. the good news is not jesus, it's that atheism and science are making progress to create a better future for humanity...judging by my current outlook on life, i feel that we're going to be okay. ;)
oh btw I'm 24 work weekends at a Methodist church and pretty sure i've convinced my catholic grandmother that obama is okay and there is no god. so yeah i feel good...(grandparents can sometimes be racist, it's not their fault it's just the generation they were brought up in...)
ADDITION 2-ish:
When I first started high school my mom put me in a private school because she thought me and my twin needed to pursue our lives separately so I thought hmm... private school. I think that's when I first realized I suffered from depression. It was horrible. I had 2 friends at that school, two guys that were just as pathetic as I was. We played yu-gi-oh drew pictures of cartoons and were kinda the loners. we had each other and that was it. we didn't fit in with the visor wearing tennis douche bags, the jocks, the urban princesses or the other pretty rich people that went there. i remember being spit on having my locker glued shut by my lab partner and being given Saturday school for calling a teacher by her first name...i literally said "goodbye Natasha" i liked her name because it reminded me of Natalia from goldeneye, then i had to spend Saturday vacuuming her classroom. i remember another time crying under the pews in the schools chapel...after my mom found out how much i hated school and my life at that point she moved me (sophomore year) to a county school near our house... i was so relieved, i would finally be accepted (but not fit in) i found a small group of upper class-men that i thought were the shit, they drew comic related things in art class, listened to punk and liked hanging around me...it wasn't until later that i only realized they liked me because they could get me to do anything they wanted, because i was trying to fit in and impress them. i would do stupid things and get into trouble, i would ask girls perverted questions that they told me so that they could laugh (albeit [unbeknownst to me] at my expense) while i thought they thought i was funny. after a year or so they thought i was just annoying and disassociated themselves with me, i fell into the pattern of friends that still did childish things, like card games and cartoons and whatnot, it's the only people i could talk with. there were more of them here and they liked me. some were younger some were my age but i had found people like me with similar interests. i wasn't' one of the pretty popular guys with the abercrombie shirt and the new ford truck i was the kid with cargo shorts and the dragon-ball z tee shirts, i was the one who could tell you everything about cartoons, and comics, and toys, i was naive in the ways of women and didn't' see them as a force of attraction yet. i was kind of a late bloomer so i never really felt like dating or anything. when i went to college however already years late on the game i first found my interest in women, i fooled around with a girl or two but the chance to "become a man" never came up. i was so focused on just getting people to like me, to not be discouraged when i was around was my main goal, i ended up becoming (not close) friend zoned by most everyone. i cried many a night in my dorm room wondering if anyone really cared. people would be like "ironmanthing it can't be that bad, you have lots of friends" to which i would say "i can literally sit in my dorm all night any day of the year and not have one phone call from anyone my age" anyone. and it was true. i was fun to be around, yea, but no one liked me well enough to invite me around. they could tolerate me it seems but wouldn't go out of their way to include me specifically. it's been a very lonely and sad road that i have traveled and now that I'm reaching mid 20's I'm seeing acquaintances i know and knew getting married, dying, moving, becoming successful, achieving their dreams and i sit and think to myself, where did i go wrong, what did i miss to become so overwhelmingly alone. I'm afraid to break out of my comfortable simple daily routine, afraid to mix it up and enjoy life. I've just been sitting waiting for life to happen to me. i thought maybe someday some woman will find me attractive and start pursuing me, I thought maybe I'll get lucky by chance somewhere. but here i am, 24, months from 25, a quarter of my life gone, and what do i have to show for it? an impressive DVD, book, and comic collection, a couple people online who like racing or shooting zombies with me? yeah I've got relatives and parents that love me but no one else does. sure they say "someday you'll meet somebody" and i just think why not her, am I not good looking enough, i feel that the special girls are a one shot chance, if i blow it that's it, so i usually play it cool and just become the nice funny guy they'll bend over backwards to do anything, "date him, nah he's just a friend"...just a friend, do they know I want to be more than that, yeah they can go anywhere and have guys like me lining up to get a night alone to get to know them better but me, i feel I've fallen through the cracks, i feel that I'm going to die alone and it's my fault. I wasn't interested in girls the time when i should have been filled with raging hormones driving me to nail my first piece of ass, i was stupid and cared more about whether my full collection of holographic first editions would impress my friends, I feel 10 years behind my actual age, as if I'm experiencing my life at a delayed pace, like shit "where was this horny guy when i was in high school" he would have told those girls that he was interested.
i guess I've got a lot to think about and my life probably seems pretty messed up but...i don't know. if you've read all this, that's cool i don't know if the sentences will fit together properly and make sense, and i don't know what i intended you to get out of this, i just needed someone to listen, sometimes that's all people need, but in this world they can't get the time of fucking day.
EDIT: Fixed the major spelling, grammar and other errors.

Ah, fellow Little Rockian. /salute
It sounds like if you enjoy your current job then you might be out of luck in that aspect. But as for associating with family members with whom you disagree, there's always the option of choosing NOT to be around them. I've laid down the law a few times with one branch of our family tree that can't seem to find their way out of being the trashiest of trash. Just because we share some of the same genetics doesn't in any way obligate me to deal with their particular brand of drama.
I've traveled all over the country for work and a good chunk of Canada, and I can tell you that you'll find all sorts no matter where you go. It was a bit of a shock for me discovering Arkansas doesn't have the market cornered on rednecks haha. So the point is you have to find good people where you can and actively choose not to associate with the rest :)
thanks...i do enjoy my job, it's a company run by my two uncles and father, that their father started in the 40's...so...yeah...i majored in radio television, and video, but the company is a mechanical engineering company so i've kinda fucked my life in my college pursuits there also...i've heavily added to my last post...a couple of times...
hitting the refreshbutton like it's my imaginary wife
I laughed to the point of tears.
Sounds like you had a rough time of it growing up, mate. I can't necessarily empathize, so the best I can do is come at ya fortune-cookie-style with a "just be you and try to enjoy life as much as possible." Cheers!
shit in re-editing that part got nixed...oh well...cheers to you too...(I'm ahead by one rum and coke)
[–]RavixTheDreamer 1 point2 points3 points 1 month ago*
My sympathies go out to you, friend. I personally have gone through a major heartache. 7 years, one girl. I still love her to death, man. And if I was given the chance, I'd take her back in a heartbeat. I'd do it all again. She really helped define me as a person, helped me look at myself. We literally met in 3rd grade and went from there. It's the toughest part of my day, seeing her. I won't bitch about "frienzone" or anything, but it sucks to know the one you want to spend your life with smilin' and flirtin'... It's hard.
(Edit: Dragonball Z rocks, and I personally like cargo pants. I'm the forever alone type too. I always have been. I try to get out more, but my town's really boring. Little Rock and the exciting stuff is like a few hours away, and my parents are pretty distrustful of what I'll do if I'm alone in Little Rock. So yeah.)

I can't rightly give advice, seeing as how I'm still all messed up/semi-suicidal, but hey i suppose your situation is prolly different from mine. Look, just try your luck, man. You gotta try for your dreams. Instead of fantasizing a life that could have been, try to stake your claim on a piece of destiny. Make yourself known. I know it sounds corny, but you have to swing the bat or else you'll end up striking out every time. Go for it!
we should get some drinks together or something...drag me out of my apartment...i'd love to have a "small" get-together...plus since i do drink now i'd have a easy-in to socailaszing at bars adn such ...or not...dosnt matter to me.
Sorry man. I don't drink, never have. I don't want to develop any more vices than I already have.
[–]ironmanthing 1 point2 points3 points 1 month ago*
yeah i've got to stop aswell...got pressured into drinking by this guy from work...didn't start drinking till this year...alcohol at all. but now i drink rum like a pirate. i don't think i overdrink it's just fucking expensive at 47.99 for a bottle. :(
well the /r/littlerock does meet up every now and then...i might try to go to one if it's somewhere i feel comfortable going...

Move to an actual city.
[–]ironmanthing -1 points0 points1 point 1 month ago
can't tell if you are trying to be a dick or sarcastic so please read the appropriate response :)
Dick: hey fuck you little rock is a great city and I'm proud to live in it.
Sarcastic: yeah i wish our city was more "progressive"
i know you read both so...well...if you are the first option then don't be a dick on the internet, we may look like usernames of people you will probably never meet but we are real. we have problems just like you and just want to be treated with the same respect that everyone else wants
(not sure if being an asshole or if i've just had too mnay rum & coke's tonight...if the above statements are mean then i;m sorry and don't really mean them, i wish all of you the best in everything you do :)
[–]RawrXD 1 point2 points3 points 1 month ago
What the actual fuck are you talking about.
i have no idea...i think i've had a little too much rum tonight..and im watching the office.
I think you may have took my comment the wrong way, and I may have worded it wrong as well. My meaning with that was to move to an urbanized city, because the last comment said something about "urban". So move to a large, metropolitan city where you won't be heckled as much for being 'different".
yeah i misread it completely, i'm kinda dumb that way, back to the most recent comment,...THIS...and yeah i didn't really like the spot when i used urban...i think i meant city or opposite of country more...my limited vocabulary can become a hindrance at times. i've often wanted to move north or to somewhere else but when you've got a "great?" career like i've got now then there isn't much incentive to go anywhere...especially since i just signed another 12 months on my apt....
Aw man I wish you the best. As someone who lives in the north (Canada), we welcome anyone and everyone.
aw man..."obligatory Canadians being totally awesome comment"
but yeah if shit goes down in America, i know lotsa people that are running in your direction.

retch
As you may have ascertained from my user name, I'm a long-time-lurking fellow Arkansan. I made this account solely to ask you about your experience. I understand this is the internet and anonymity is king, so feel free to answer with as much or as little information as you are comfortable with. I'd just like to know:
I only ask because I'm rather shocked to hear about that type of thing going on. I've lived in Arkansas my entire life (I'm 28 now), and I've never personally experienced anything of the sort. Granted, I've lived primarily in Little Rock which is a bit more of a melting pot than other parts of the state. I went to school at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville which again is not necessarily reflective of the rest of the state.
I'm going to assume you live in the far southern area of the state?
Well, in order (whilst retaining anonimity) i live in a real backwoods kind of area. Northeast Arkansas. That's all I'll say on that. It's not just the south that's bad, for sure. I attend a bigger high school, and I'm in my Junior year. I go to a Church of God (that's the actual name), which is preeetty Baptist, and reluctantly so. Seriously? You've NEVER experienced this kind of thing?! It's commonplace here, man!!! You must be in the safest part in the damn state!
[–]fellow_arkansan 1 point2 points3 points 1 month ago
Haha well I don't know about the "safest" part of the state. Little Rock usually hangs around #5 on the crime stats lists nationwide for such categories as larceny and homicide unfortunately. A good family friend did a couple documentaries over the last 20 years called "Bangin' in the Rock" about gang violence in the city... I believe you can find them in full on YouTube (pretty good watch to be honest). But like I said, it's definitely more of a melting pot than other areas of the state, so by default you're exposed to a variety of philosophies.
I can't say I personally agree with all of your life's choices and philosophies, the same as I doubt you would agree with all of mine. And that's fine. We can still share a pint and treat each other like human beings.
But I can tell you that things will for sure get better as you get older and start to make your own way in the world. I wouldn't go as far as to say I was oppressed or forced to do anything I didn't agree with by my parents. But as they were providing me with life's essentials such as food, clothing, shelter, love, etc. and trying their hardest to raise me right, I felt I owed them my loyalty even at times when I didn't necessarily agree with them. But I worked hard through high school, and when I was 18 got a full scholarship to the University of Arkansas, and after graduating I found a great job as a scientist. I can tell you that life away from home will really change your perceptions. I butt heads with my parents on occasion even today, but we still recognize that we share a mutual love and respect even though we don't agree.
It probably sounds clichéd to say, and keep in mind I'm only 28 myself so I can't claim any vast wisdom. But I will say that when you become self-sufficient, there's no one out there who can tell you how to live your life. And speaking of clichés, one that I found to be very true is that those who are bullying you and picking on you in high school will likely never amount to anything. I was never bullied personally, but I knew the types. I'd say at least half of them are either in prison or working the drive-thru window haha.
Stay strong, mate. It gets better :)
Well, by "safe" I meant "safe" to express your opinions. I was well aware of the crime statistic. We got a few gangs here, but nothing big like you Little Rock cats. I really hope that what you say comes true... Even still, I'ma keep my mouth shut tight until I get outta high school. I thank you, my fellow Arkansan, for looking past my beliefs. You are a good person, and I hope you discover something epic that gets you a lot of scientific grants/royalties etc. I personally want to write when I grow up.
Mind if I inquire further as to what specific type of writing you enjoy? I do a lot of technical writing as part of my job, but I admit I have no talent in the realm of creative writing.
Mostly sci-fi, a healthy portion of fantasy, some contemporary realistic fiction, a bit of non-fiction, possibly romance... I'm trying to stay flexible until I really find my genre. Taking creative writing classes.
I know we've gotten a little off-topic at this point, but I just finished the series The Dresden Files by author Jim Butcher. Quite possibly the best fantasy series I've ever read (and simultaneously the worst executed book-to-tv series of all times).
I'll be sure to try to find that sometime. I recommend Going Bovinr by Libba Bray. Beautiful book, sad, and funny at the same time.

I also live in Arkansas so I hope I can help. Both my cousins are lesbians and my family totally supports them. Their girlfriends are so sweet that I'm just happy they each have the other. It really is beautiful. We are even Baptist. It has alot to do with the people.

Maybe this is just my town, but I live in Norman Oklahoma (where the university of Oklahoma is) and homosexuality and atheism/agnosticism is generally accepted here. Even in my high school no one gets beat up for thinking differently.

Atheist Mississippi native here. Showed r/atheism to my 52 year old father. Guess who else figured out religion is bullshit?
Osama Bin Laden? No, but seriously, congrats, friend.
[–]FootFuck 0 points1 point2 points 1 month ago
Lol. Atheist born and raised in southern Louisiana here. It's not necessarily like that, not here at least, but it's damn funny.
[–]sludgefiend504 1 point2 points3 points 1 month ago
Same, born and raised in New Orleans. None of my friends or family go to church and if they are religious they're usually Catholics that don't give a fuck.

Oh I knew it! I saw the thread with all the commercial gifs and commented, "this will now be Reddits' reaction gif."
I was so right.

when i did this in school one of the kids next to me started crying because, and I quote, "I can't believe you worship the devil, i used to like you" and ran out trying to find a teacher to punish me

As an atheist living in Texas, I have literally never seen anything like this. Sure, people might give you a disapproving look but that's about it. I must living in a fucking bubble or something. Kids in my area are also not nearly as heartless as the top comment is saying. People getting beat up for being bisexual? People are openly gay at my high school, with kissing, hugging, and hand-holding in the halls a common sight. If someone beat up anyone for sexual orientation or faiths they would be instantaneously sorry due to the wrath that would be waiting for them. It's not like I live in a liberal area of Texas either. I live just outside of Houston, where people vote Republican ALWAYS and curse Obama for anything he does. I guess I should feel lucky.

One of the many, many, many reasons I could never live in the South.
Is one of them sweeping generalizations?
[–]sidwood -12 points-11 points-10 points 1 month ago*
I have no desire to live in a backwards culture founded on a cruel plantation aristocracy.
[–]HailCorduroy 1 point2 points3 points 1 month ago
Well, bless your heart.
[–]sidwood -5 points-4 points-3 points 1 month ago
See, in North we only say things like that when we mean them.
[–]sidwood -2 points-1 points0 points 1 month ago
Downvote me all you want, it won't change the fact that we should have let you guys go 150 years ago.
[–]HailCorduroy 0 points1 point2 points 1 month ago
Oh, we mean it down here too.
[–]como_se_dice -2 points-1 points0 points 1 month ago
Or the north. Or the midwest. Or the west.
