If her plan was to kill herself she wouldn't have bothered gotten her wounds stitched up. She could easily have killed herself if that was what she wanted. Judging from the scars, she has cut severly many times. It's not unlkely that she will kill herself, but she most likely didn't attempt to that time.

This is a very sick person with mental illness mutilating their body to a very severe degree. To most anyone this behavior to this degree is incomprehensible, but this person is in a lot a pain. To seek comfort/security in such physical pain and punishment, imagine the degree of emotional pain this person must be trying to avoid.

I really hope this person has gotten help, though recovering from SI addiction this severe is incredibly hard to treat even with good therapy.

I also hope no one battling with self injury happened across the other links and pictures of injury and were triggered.

It doesn't need to be painless... Mind over matter and you can do things like this to yourself without much problem. Yes, it will hurt, but it's just pain, you can ignore it, especially if you have mental conditions.

For most people yeah. If you've never had a mental illness, and/or done self-mutilation it can seem impossible or too painful. Of course it doesn't make sense to someone sane, with normal emotions and feelings to pain.

Meh, I've performed self surgery, but it was fairly minor. Had to remove a sliver of my tongue which had been mostly bitten off in an accident (the sliver not the tongue). Used the paramedic's surgical scissors and it was fine.

Very, very few people have mastered the mind/body connection enough to undergo surgery without anesthesia. So it's possible but not likely in this case. Either serious painkillers, numbing agents or the guy has a back injury.

Tell a nation of people who eat more painkillers than the rest of the world combined that pain is simply mind over matter.

I've known plenty of guys (all in the military, myself included) who have needed or wanted to do something (one guy had a cist or something in his leg) who have done surgeries on themselves with a bottle of preferred alcohol as a painkiller, and combat knife as instrument.

I feel like I have to note this is also a terrible idea and you shouldn't try it.

If you mean passing out because of the pain and the sight of it: To be able to do this to yourself, you need a fascination, dedication or (likely) a psychiatric disorder for self-harm that changes your pain perception. "Normal" pain perception causes enormous stress and, logically, the want for that pain to go away. People who do things like this, don't mind pain so much. Some people enjoy being physically hurt.

If you mean from blood loss: The incision is pretty superficial and it's not bleeding that actively. The blood on the tissues is more likely from dabbing and wiping the blood away.

That said, this is fucking stupid. Even if you enjoy pain, taking a blade to a tendon is pretty stupid. Unless your endgame is to handicap yourself..

Bestgore.com have a section on body mods and self mutilation. Self mutilators actually submit pictures and stories and explain why they do what they do. I can't remember this guys story but he's on there. FYI, it appears to be the tendon of the tibialis anterior muscle. Putting the scalpel deep to that means he's already had to cut through the skin, subcutaneous fat, and crural fascia. The tibialis anterior tendon runs immediately superficial to the tibia, and serves to raise the front of the foot and also to turn it pinky-toe down and big-toe up. God forbid this guy realizes there are two or three more tendons just a little deeper than where that one came from.
