I think the really big ones are wood roaches and don't carry disease (though they still freak me out, nonetheless). During the summertime in NC they scurry around everywhere at night. When I first moved here, I was sitting outside on a bench, talking to a friend on the phone, enjoying the evening. Out of the corner of my eye I see one of these huge-ass wood roaches scampering on the bench toward me. I leaped up out of harms way, until suddenly that motherfucker TOOK FLIGHT in my direction. I sprinted away, shrieking. My friend on the phone thought something really bad had happened. Ughh.
