Yeah I did, two machines up and running now, working on the 3rd without a proper keyboard and mouse.

Edit: will a ATI Radeon X1300 work for GPU work units, I have one in the closet I can add to one of my machines.

At first I was sure Avatar was going to take the cake, as AtLA is a more, how you say, a culturally accepted fanbase. However, Bronies have one thing many fandoms do not.

Dedication.

I set up an Amazon EC2 instance to work on this, in addition to the four quad core computers that I am running at home, for a total of 24 cores working on this.

 

 

 

Edit: Per Snivian_Moon's comment, I have stopped running the EC2 instance, and it submitted no results to WCG, and therefore had no impact on my score.

I don't think Snivian_Moon wants a competition that shows how rich we are, but one that shows how much effort we are willing to expend. Setting up EC2 is fairly easy but costs money, while using personal computers takes more work.

Yes, as a said in my mouseover text, I am paying $3/day for an 8 core machine. (Because it is a Spot instance it is not guaranteed to run all the time, but it is much cheaper.)

I honestly truly think you should give the show a shot. I noticed that both the original Avatar and Legends of Korra both have an appeal that keep me coming back. Same thing happened to me when I started watching MLP.

Good, a daily update thread. Hope people are cool with someone posting one every day while this is going on. We're already in the top 40 teams on the site in size - good job! But I do want to say that although we're up 272 to 30, the benders actually closed on the bronies in not just proportional but also absolute numbers today after a flurry of recruitment threads on their sub. We started the day with 4.5x their numbers and now we only have 3x their numbers. I'm sure this will be getting more competitive.

I think part of it is that they're semi-troll, and like a lot of us, want to see the rustled jimmies when r/mylittlepony has a front page ad and banner go up. Avatar is a lot more accepted culturally, so mlp winning would end up causing a lot more drama. Avatar winning, people would just kinda go "oh, thats cool" and people would move on with their day. I don't think avatar has nearly as many haters as mlp.

To be fair we do enjoy the show, so that part of our fandom is not trolling. Besides, it was not the sub's idea, it was the mod's and reddit admins approved and I myself am just supporting the competition because charity and Avatar/Ponies awesomeness, not because I really care about the rustling, I could care less about it. Pony banner on reddit=more haters=same thing to me, I don't care.

You got a point. Still, I don't see how it hurts them in any way to have a different banner for one day. I mean, it's not like we're insulting them or telling them to fuck off, it was a contest organized by mods and admins. Still, I don't see what we win with changing the logo and banner. Subscriptions or something? I don't really see the point. I'd much rather have artists of the losing fandom accept the winner's commissions for one day or something like that.

Yeah, but it's still annoying. Like, with the college banner contest, no one liked it because it was both distracting and it was only cool to the people of those colleges. Combine that with the irritation many people get from seeing pony stuff (because it's spammed so much all over the Internet), and of course people are going to be annoyed.

I don't think that would work, because there's no way to force them to accept commissions, and what if they're just not in a mood to draw stuff? Even if they do accept, they'll be getting dozens of commissions that they're now obligated to finish.

I think art will depend on what artists actually know about the competition, if we got some of the greats involved, I've seen what the competition has to offer and it's nothing compared to the work of some pony artists.

for donations, they don't have a prayer, unless people are out of money from already donating to other things, but then again it's common knowledge that bronies have infinite money.

Haha. The one I was thinking of is derpaherpasaurus, who is a great artist and a good contributing member of this community. They happen to have been a fan of AtLA for much longer than MLP, so, really, it would be treacherous if they were to support MLP in this one :)

The point is though, just because there are good artists who are into MLP doesn't necessarily mean we'll win the art contest. Best to do our best in every part where we can have an impact :)

It probably helps that I have my dedicated SQL server at work running balls-out during the nights after the nightly backup finishes. It only gets in about 5 hours of work each night, but it's an enterprise server... so yeah....

I also have my i7-2600K + 680 GTX, and my i7-870 + HD 6870 running full time to compliment the server output.

It's also worth noting that in this event, it's not just winning that matters, but margin. The losing side will get points in proportion to what fraction of the winning side's score they got. So, if it's a close match, the points in the overall competition will reflect that.

It's in our interests to not get complacent and to push hard for a landslide to deny them as many points as possible.

Finising the first result will probably take at least 4 hours, and it might not get posted to the website for a few more hours after that. Even then the stats on the website are only generated every 12 hours. You might need to wait a whole day before you see any results, and a few more days before you see consistent results. If you are really curious switch to the advanced view of BOINC and check on the Tasks tab. This is a game of months, not hours.

Once you return a result, it takes a little time for it to get verified against the same work unit done by someone else. If it's valid you get the points (and it probably will be unless you've overclocked your computer to the point where it's become unstable).

Now these "benders" believe that this competition is theirs to win. They think they can beat us. I'm off to a small Brony convention this weekend. I'll be leaving my laptop on, as it has been since this started, chugging away and earning us points.

Edit: Just saw that this contest ends on the 16th. I'm not sure if I should leave my laptop on for 3 weeks straight.

There was an error that gave us a 2 day, 15 hour head-start, so when the contest is over, that time will be deducted from our total

Hey, looks like the Benders have upped their game. 426 vs 1077 members at the time of writing. Members are probably the best metric of performance so far because results returned tend to lag a few days due to verification (e.g. most of my returned results are still in the verification step).

So it looks like they were a little slow of the starting block. That don't mean we can start counting our chickens before they hatch quite yet.
