Actually, while we're at it, let me offer you a happier alternative: Calvin & Hobbes & Bacon.

[–]Ratohnhaketon 34 points35 points ago

That made me happier, thank you.

[–]WorkingMouse 24 points25 points ago

Just in case you missed the link at the bottom, it's a series of four!

You can find the second one here, and the third and fourth by decreasing the number in the url; it's merely a search function to get all of them easily.

[–]cydril 10 points11 points ago

Those were cool, but is the daughter actually named bacon?

[–]therascalking13 32 points33 points ago

Yes, to continue the trend of naming the characters after philosophers.

Calvin = John Calvin
Hobbes = Thomas Hobbes
Bacon = Francis Bacon

[–]WorkingMouse 15 points16 points ago

The strips actually made by the original artist - who has since moved away from comic strips - never went beyond Calvin's childhood. Indeed, this is the last published strip.

On the other hand, in Calvin & Hobbes & Bacon - the homage done by the fellows who did Pants are Overrated (which you just read) - Calvin's daughter is indeed named Bacon. I believe the artist said they chose that name, first, because it fit with the theme; Calvin and Hobbes are named after a famous theologian and political philosopher respectively, thus Bacon a good choice for the third.

They went on to comment that if anyone would name their daughter Bacon, it would be Calvin.

[–]jevmorgan 16 points17 points ago

That last published strip...right in the feels...in a good way.

[–]Octovias 1 point2 points ago

Well shit, that was my favorite part of the book... thanks tho.

[–]dissapointedorikface 0 points1 point ago

This makes me angry. This makes me very angry.

[–]C_T_C_C 2 points3 points ago

That. Was. Beautiful.

[–]WorkingMouse 0 points1 point ago

I'm glad you enjoyed it!

[–]C_T_C_C 0 points1 point ago

No, I feel as if I have seriously erred you all mates. I'm sorry.

[–]cydril 2 points3 points ago

Oh I see! Thats pretty cool then.

[–]jdmason 5 points6 points ago

This made me smile.

Usually Calvin and Hobbes comics from the future make me sad, but this one made me smile.

[–]WorkingMouse 4 points5 points ago

I'm glad you like it; as I've just mentioned to another, it's a series of four in total.

You can find the second one here, and the third and fourth by decreasing the number in the url; it's merely a search function to get all of them easily.

Im 16 and just started my junior year in high school. This comic made me realize im growing up. I cried. I dont want to grow up...

[–]negative_discourse 3 points4 points ago

[–]GravyShallow 1 point2 points ago

Then don't. Balance your adult responsibilities with childlike wonder. Never stop learning.

[–]LoganKeeps 0 points1 point ago

I will definitely try

[–]WorkingMouse -1 points0 points ago

Oh, I understand; indeed, we've all stood there before. But this is a bitter-sweet realization, and one you must come to eventually. And I'm afraid you've gotten me waxing philosophical, so up on the soap-box I go.

We, as humans, are mortal; we live and we die. This is something that some dread and fear, but which I have come to accept. Not because it is the "natural order" or any silliness like that, but because it is a reminder to savor and enjoy all that we have in life. And besides, while I am more then willing to take actions which will prolong my life, it will inevitably end, and so it seems little use to spend the time I have worrying about it.

Part of this mortality is that we grow older, and we grow up. However, let me be the first to tell you that even as we grow up, we never need to truly grow old. As they say, you're never too old to be immature. You, like most of us, will have opportunities to do wonderful things; perhaps you will advance a career you find rewarding, or produce inspiriting art, or raise good children, or even simply bring smiles to others. But all that, all those wonderful things we want to do as children come with the cost of responsibility and risk. As we gain the ability to do more, so too do we gain the responsibility for our own actions; what we do soon rests only on our heads. This is a change from the irresponsibility of childhood, but not a bad one; so to do we have more control over ourselves. Don't see this as something to escape, but a motivation to move forwards, to keep yourself aiming at the dreams you still carry.

Things will not always be joyous. You will have sadness as well as joy; hardship as well as plenty - and indeed, as the universe is quite arbitrary, you may be saddled with quite a bit. Indeed, even with a mere sixteen years, you no doubt already feel that you have experienced sadness and hardship, but you should still expect more. But alongside that, there will be more joy. And there still remains more for you to discover, to do, to explore, to experience, and to think then you can possibly fit within your lifetime. Do not dwell upon your sadness when it comes, but savor it; this too shows you are alive.

Life is hard, but rewarding. Like Dwarf Fortress. Let your dreams continue to inspire you, but grasp for them with your own hands.

Still, don't worry too much about wasting time; sometimes it is that "waste" which becomes the thing you will miss most. A few moments spent walking in the grass, the taste and texture of cold root beer on the tongue, the sound of rushing water, the heavily-perfumed hug of a grandparent, or even a silly pun thread here on this very website - do not be afraid to enjoy them while you can. Life is temporary; don't let others chide you for doing what you enjoy (morality providing, of course), so long as you don't loose sight of the goals you make for yourself.

And remember, even if you and I are growing, and shall die, and even if we are insignificant in the grand scheme of things, even if everything we know, love, and leave behind are eventually lost to the ages, or even the ravages of an expanding sun, we are here. We, in our insignificance, in our temporariness, are here. We yet live.

And knowing that we aren't forever, how much more is each moment worth to you? Each and every second we have is something unique to be savored which will never come again.

So yes, you are growing up. And yes, you may dwell upon the things you can't do, or the things you will miss, and all else which we term nostalgia, even this young, and you may fear what is to come. But better to go on and live then to stay unchanging.

After all, this life is yours; do you really want to spend it dreaming about what was?

[–]LoganKeeps 1 point2 points ago

Thank you, that was truly uplifting. I've never had the best life so stuff like this helps every so often.

[–]WorkingMouse 1 point2 points ago

You're welcome; I know it's not much, but I'm glad to help.

And while it may not mean all that much coming from some anonymous figure out here on the internet, it does get better. Don't get me wrong, you'll probably have to work at it (even if the bad stuff isn't your fault), but it'll get better - you'll make it so.

[–]Morgrave 18 points19 points ago

Suzie Derkins?

[–]CzechsMix 17 points18 points ago

Fun Fact. Susie is the only Calvin and Hobbes character with both a first and last name.

[–]Horkersaurus 29 points30 points ago

Tracer Bullet.

[–]Traumahawk 6 points7 points ago

ZING

[–]CzechsMix 4 points5 points ago

[–]Morgrave 0 points1 point ago

[–]ezenbrowntown 14 points15 points ago

"No, don't wipe it off with that stuffed.............uh, nevermind."

[–]dbzmah 15 points16 points ago

Hobbs could be angry here, or furiously masterbating.

[–]zanedraco77 5 points6 points ago

YES! i knew those two would get together!

[–]psychroclasm 5 points6 points ago

So... Where's the rest of it?

[–]Bloodychunker 17 points18 points ago

[–]Sakrowe 10 points11 points ago

[–]lonemonk 3 points4 points ago

How Oedipean; Teen Suzie looks just like Calvins mom.

[–]Bloodychunker 1 point2 points ago

I don't see it

[–]UtterlyDisposable 1 point2 points ago

But Hobbes liked getting "smoochies" from Susie.

[–]ASmartSoutherner 8 points9 points ago

Which is probably why he's upset that Calvin is getting them now.

[–]knight_of_r-new 4 points5 points ago

You know how Muslims feel about pictures depicting Muhammad? That's how I feel about bullshit representations of Calvin and Hobbes! Sacrilege!

You're a moron.

[–]sadorna -1 points0 points ago

whatever floats your boat buds. :)

[–]DonDoobie 0 points1 point ago

What "floats my boat" are artists like Bill Watterson who have enough love and integrity for their creations to not sell out and make millions off of Hobbes stuffed animals, stickers, or any of that merchandising bullshit. And certainly not authorize some stupid re-creation, let alone create it, like you thought :)

[–]meatspun 2 points3 points ago

You'd think he'd get a new hairstyle and t-shirt.

[–]phailhaus 2 points3 points ago

Credit? I've seen this art style before, I really like it. It's very...natural. No hard edges.

[–]Sojoez 2 points3 points ago

I'd like to know this too. I've only seen it once before. http://i.imgur.com/YOYIi.jpg

Edit: Found him. Bob RZ

[–]OnClouds 2 points3 points ago

Am I the only one who thinks it would be awesome to see Calvin grow up?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

Who makes these?

[–]hereticjones 1 point2 points ago

I always knew Susie Derkins was a freak. Right on!

[–]Kaydotkaydot 0 points1 point ago

Where's this comic from?

[–]dailyfusion 1 point2 points ago

reddit. about a month ago.

[–]rarkai 0 points1 point ago

God damn it, stop saying "right in the childhood"! None of your life was ruined by this.

[–]Konf1ikt 1 point2 points ago

Wasn't there an alternative version of this where Hobbes showed up in another frame and was like "Awwww yeeeah!" or something? I feel like Hobbes would've been supportive. He was always all about the ladies.

[–]IonAnubis 0 points1 point ago

It feels.... right.

[–]asnof 1 point2 points ago

Hobbes being a bro wouldnt you think he would cheer him on ?

[–]neostead2000 0 points1 point ago
