The Hind looks like an alien dolphin and the Apache looks like a Pontiac Aztek.

A-10 ALL THE WAY FOR GROUND SUPPORT

[–]watt9493 6 points7 points ago

Yeah man. Guy I go to school with used to fly one for support in Iraq. BADASSSSSSS

[–]jikerman 4 points5 points ago

Nothing is more powerful than the Apache Helicopter. It has guns AND Missles

[–]B0SSARU 10 points11 points ago

I disagree. The ah-1z viper is scarier.

[–]callmegibbs 4 points5 points ago

[–]DukeSpraynard 27 points28 points ago

Like the A-10 of helicopters.

[–]random123456789 7 points8 points ago

That is pretty scary, too.

But with the AH-1Z, it's not paint. It looks like radar or some such.

[–]Bucketnate 5 points6 points ago

Its the camera that the gunner uses to aim weapons

[–]random123456789 2 points3 points ago

Oh wow! That's wild.

WOLVERINES!!!!

[–]Mikey-2-Guns 4 points5 points ago

The Apache Longbow with a few wing men is a lot more intimidating, if you even get the chance to see them before one of them kills you from miles away. Tho there is something about the Hind that makes it look badass.

[–]ThePoose 10 points11 points ago

A 1980'a childhood in the US.

[–]Mikey-2-Guns 10 points11 points ago

Oh yea!...WOLVERINES!!

[–]EntropicDecay 5 points6 points ago

I love the way the Hind looks, the canopies, the long weapon arms, and the fact that its just so big for an attack heli. You can fit 8 people in the back!

[–]Unicornslayer27 505 points506 points ago

[–]RealityRush 139 points140 points ago

But an airplane does have spinning blades... several actually.

[–]The_Hindu_Hammer 140 points141 points ago

I guess I was talking about jet airplanes. Which I guess is also untrue. You know what I'm a little drunk too, just give me a pass on this one.

[–]RealityRush 60 points61 points ago

Hmm, fine. Just this one time. Next time though, you're on the couch.

[–]SwimGuys 42 points43 points ago

Sure rushed that guy back to reality.

[–]RealityRush 22 points23 points ago

It's what I do :P

[–]ckallas2 5 points6 points ago

ScramJets don't have any blades.

[–]Jbabz 7 points8 points ago

Scramjets need blades to accelerate them to the hypersonic velocities required to operate the scramjet

[–]BDUB72 8 points9 points ago

A airplane with a ramjet engine doesn't.

[–]RealityRush 2 points3 points ago

But an airplane with some had to get it up to speed for the ramjet to work in the first place :P

SOURCE (youtube) for those having problems with the GIF loading!

[–]spoonmonkey 54 points55 points ago

And of course the comments are up to the normal YouTube standard:

Stop vid at 2 seconds and you will see the shadow of the blades on the fuselage. That means either this is faked or the rotors were not going round.

and

the helicopter has a backup jet engine if the rotars fail.

and

you people are so stupid this is so obiviously fake, the rotors aren't even moving!

[–]LastImmortalMan 38 points39 points ago

Ahhh, don't show that dude this video of camera trickery. His brain might explode.

[–]Perry558 14 points15 points ago

How does that even happen

[–]LastImmortalMan 30 points31 points ago

Glad you asked, this is attributed to the 'Rolling Shutter Effect'.

[–]UnrighteousFool 23 points24 points ago

My brain hates this.

[–]0uterj0in 11 points12 points ago

Mine loves it. It's like I'm poking my head into a higher dimension or something.

[–]ngross 6 points7 points ago

I see nothing wrong. My G.I. Joe helicopters used to fly like that all the time.

[–]andrewsmith1986 157 points158 points ago

They do this so that t hey can look for damage/deformation on/in the blades.

[–]RayBoogs 245 points246 points ago

Aeronautical Engineer here. Not necessarily true but close. The camera is usually mounted on the nose of the helicopter in a procedure called a "blade track and vibration" test or track'n'vibe as it's usually called. the camera has 2 lenses on it, one will take a continuous stream footage and the other will take snap shots of each blade, comparing them to the last time it went round, to see if there is any up/down movement or if it is leading/lagging by too much. This is usually done during a ground run, and if everything is deemed ok, by the Engineer on board monitoring the equipment, the aircraft will then go into a hover and then be tested again.

Damage is inspected on the ground using a resonance hammer (sounds way cooler than it is).

[–]shrodikan 14 points15 points ago

I think I'm gonna name my penis "resonance hammer".

EDIT: Really should have googled this one before I came up with this bright idea

[–]RayBoogs 4 points5 points ago

It is a cool name, and the hammers we use look a lot more phallic, so you're safe.

[–]andrewsmith1986 85 points86 points ago

And this is why I love reddit.

Thanks for correcting me.

[–]Novo_Scotia 6 points7 points ago

I'm in my last year of school for an MAE degree and I'm amazed every fucking day by the shit we're able to do. This is one of those things that amazes me.

[–]RayBoogs 12 points13 points ago

Pretty sweet hey. Considering you see how they used to do it.

They'd stand under a helicopter with a stick with white paper/cloth on and wait for the blades to hit the paper. Each blade tip was covered with a different colour paste/chalk. The idea being if all blades were tracking the same they'd all make their mark in the same tolerated area. But if one blade was out, you'd know which one by the colour of the chalk and be able to adjust it.

Pretty ingenious, but fuck being the guy stood under a chopper ramming a stick into its rotor disc. I've done rotors running re-fuels and they are pretty scary, I wouldn't like to think what that was like...

[–]Novo_Scotia 14 points15 points ago

Wow, I never knew that's how they used to do it. Imagine being the one to throw that idea out there...

"Hey guys, what if we just stand underneath and jam a stick in the rotors to check tolerances?"

"Sounds good, Jim. Here's a stick and some paper. Get at it, you crazy fuck."

[–]RayBoogs 10 points11 points ago

Yeah fucking crazy. I couldn't believe it when our tutor told me that's how they used to do it, we though he was lying and all had a good laugh. Then he shows us a video of it, we were like. What in the fuck?!?! But then you think about it, how else were they going to do it.

[–]DankDarko 5 points6 points ago

Any chance that video is online? I couldnt find anything like it but maybe am not searching with the right keywords.

[–]RayBoogs 8 points9 points ago

I don't think so, it was an old VHS RAF training video, it was properly old, I'll have a search, but I suspect OP won't deliver.

[–]DankDarko 3 points4 points ago

Ah yes, the prehistoric fabled "V.H.S"

[–]KarmicBlack 4 points5 points ago

Definitely not the same video, but here's the same test being done.

[–]scruffy01 89 points90 points ago

Couldn't they just do this... oh I don't know... with the motor turned off?

[–]andrewsmith1986 148 points149 points ago

Ok, how would they check deformation at speed?

[–]Doctor_is_in 36 points37 points ago

Hold the blades in place and spin the copter around of course.

[–]weskokigen 8 points9 points ago

If it works for my mini RC copter it will work for the real thing damnit.

[–]VertigoVII 8 points9 points ago

Turn the helicopter upside down, it wont fly away.. perfect logic.

[–]Mr_Ected 5 points6 points ago

Just stand on the ground and spin really fast.

[–]yellowboat 12 points13 points ago

Where did you hear that? Of the methods I'm aware of to do this, taking crappy video of a flying bird doing random maneuvers is not one of them. I could easily be mistaken, I'm just wondering what your source was.

[–]yeowoh 4 points5 points ago

It's Russia, and old footage.

[–]andrewsmith1986 -1 points0 points ago

[–]lydocia 33 points34 points ago

I feel like starting some sort of cabal to monumentally downvote things. It's just a passing fancy, though, but it embodies my desir for less reposts. With the recent expose of cabals., I guess mine would be a ...group? Not a cabal. none of the member would profit individually. The purpose not to be to gain karma or disenfranchise users, but to stop reposts.

Now, this post IS a repost, but as far as my experience on reddit these last few days is concerned, it's a gif repost of a video. That's still a repost, despite claims of others to have never seen it. People saw it, that's why it was on the front page. Some dude made it into a gif, or found it (now THAT'S coincidence for you) and posted it.

Heck, I saw this years ago. Seriously, like 3 years ago. Maybe more. but it's not fair to bring that up before I was a reddit member. I can let that go. You can't judge things from solely the very origin of the piece. You're commenting on reddit, so I have to base myself on reddit.

That being said, I had to downvote. I upvote the SHIT out of reposts if they do it better than the guy before them. Always look for improvement. But this is just a gif of the video. I realize some people haven't seen it, but I have, and for years. If I don't say something, it'll jst be continually reposts. But now people have read this, they'll have slightly more info than before.

[–]TooHappyFappy 0 points1 point ago

This might be the first ever gif that should go on /r/perfecttiming

[–]Mattyice318 0 points1 point ago

[–]aleahey 0 points1 point ago

Whole bucket of awesome.

[–]MrPartridge 0 points1 point ago

I would really love for someone to explain the science and math behind this effect. I imagine it involves a sophisticated camera and a helicopter blade rotation frequency that is a multiple of the camera's shutter speed.

[–]FrancisJv 0 points1 point ago

WHAT KIND OF SORCERY IS THIS??!! Also my ROFLcopter DOESN'T go soi soi soi soi soi soi soi soi soi soi soi soi soi soi soi soi soi soi soi soi soi soi soi soi soi soi soi soi soi soi soi soi soi soi soi soi

[–]Toshiro_Mifune 0 points1 point ago

I want a Mil Mi-24.

[–]vostok412 0 points1 point ago

I'm an aerospace engineer and in my first year in my department at college one of my professors played this for my propulsion class. He challenged us to figure out how the helicopter was flying. Wild theories were thrown out from 'well it's moving so it's gliding' to 'the rotor exhaust is providing thrust so it's just falling really slowly'.

Finally, one of my class mates that had spent years as a Navy mechanic said the camera shutter was synced with the blades. The class felt stupid and we learned an important lesson: We may be rocket scientists but that doesn't mean we know everything, always ask questions.

[–]ExistentLOList 0 points1 point ago

That is so freaking cool.

[–]Ludoweez 0 points1 point ago

WHAT IS THIS SORCERY!

[–]ConvictChip 0 points1 point ago

Roflcopter

[–]Broken_S_Key 0 points1 point ago

i want to see the sutter speed synced to the rotation of the wheels on a car driving on the freeway. itll look like its gliding along with the other cars.

now heres my mental block. car 1 is synced with the shutter at lets say 10 units. a car going faster (within the shot) will be at say 12 units, so itll appear that the wheels are spinning slowly. but what about a car at 8 units? will the rotation be choppy? backwards? or what? and what would happen to the landscape behind the car (assuming the camera is looking perpendicular to the side of the car)

[–]already_tak3n 0 points1 point ago

WAT

[–]blowinbacksout 0 points1 point ago

so much better than the video they posted a few days ago of teh same exact thing... now it has no sound AND worse quality!

[–]trixter21992251 0 points1 point ago

I think it's remarkable how stable the rotors' rotational speed is.

[–]itaremeelar 0 points1 point ago

Reminds me of that Flying Lawnmower video from way back when.

[–]Adinotheclaw 0 points1 point ago

I will upvote that!! SUCK IT PHYSICS!!!

[–]King_Pumpernickel 0 points1 point ago

I read somewhere that the heli was being held by a crane or something, but seeing other people's explanations I'm dismissing that as complete bullcrap.
