He’s singing the finger song. You know “Where is pointer, where is pointer… where is middle finger, where is middle finger? Here I am!…”

Just figured that out, myself.

I was a city daycamp counselor as a volunteer when I was a teenager, three consecutive, 2-week sessions each summer, for a couple of years.

It taught me a lot about volunteerism. Basically, the major disappointment a volunteer faces is that, because they are free, they are looked upon as granted by those who organize the activity - and so rather than express a little bit of gratitude, spending maybe 10% of what they would have on you in salary (on, say, a party -- or a plaque, or something), they spend nothing. And in the end, I just felt used. So, volunteerism is really good only if you're self-motivated. As an adult, I know this doesn't have to be that way -- there are excellent organizations which know to appreciate their volunteers, so it was sad that this was my first experience.

Also, the cycle with the kids was the same: initial enthusiasm, giving way to the discovery of their problems, followed by their learning that you have limits to what you can do to control them.
