There was a very interesting article about it that described how ridiculous it was on the field. Incompetent russian generals were fighting dedicated Finns that knew the terrain perfectly. The frontline was sometimes so wide it had only a handful of resistants per kilometer, but they held the lines for weeks. When that line broke, it got bad an they started taking a lot more casualties.

Nonetheless, it was a very embarrassing war for the russians.

Oh, and the record for confirmed kills? A Finn during the Winter War.

thing about this is the Soviet Union didn't fight conventionally. It was one gun to every 3 men and when your buddy died you pick up the gun. If you tried to turn around the officers would shoot you.

For anyone finding excuses for why the Soviet Union faired so badly, stop. Just stop.

The Finnish soldiers had to fight tanks by taping a bunch of explosives together and then had to get close enough to the tank to toss it on them. For every one piece of artillery Finland had, the USSR had 50, and the Russians would unleash a barrage for absolutely anything. For every man the Finns had, the USSR had 10. The fact that Finland didn't crumble in two weeks is astonishing. And in the end they didn't even necessarily lose, they kept their homeland and only lost the Karelian Isthmus which connects Finland and Russia in the south.

Finland had fucking sisu. Which basically means "balls" in Finnish...
