The third guy from the left looks like my uncle.

[–]cgdiaz 62 points63 points ago

And I go back to look.....

[–]lurker_becomes_lurkd 16 points17 points ago

Haha and to think, what would you have said? "Oh yeah he does kind of look like your uncle"

[–]reddit-ulous 2 points3 points ago

I looked because I wanted to see what OP's uncle looks like in case I see him around.

[–]cgdiaz 0 points1 point ago

It was more of a, "wait...weren't they in space suits? Could you see their faces?" kind of a moment.

[–]titanicx 3 points4 points ago

High altitude suits

FTFY

As an aside I saw this guy the other day. And along with is were these and they had a description.

[–]Aavagadrro 0 points1 point ago

So you were near Omaha. SAC Museum is pretty cool. Check out the USAF Museum in Ohio just outside Wright Patterson AFB. I havent been to SAC since they first put the B36 inside.

[–]titanicx 0 points1 point ago

I would love to, but that would be one helluva drive, I barely survived the 14 hours to there! One day i will make it out that way though, I have family in the area.

[–]cgdiaz 0 points1 point ago

Well sure, after you go to the museum you know ALL about them :) Thanks for the pictures!

[–]titanicx 2 points3 points ago

Actually it's about 30 years of obsessing over the SR-71 Blackbird and subsequently learning about the U2.

Came here hoping for something like this, didnt expect it from OP. Surely delivered, thanks

[–]crackhappy 3 points4 points ago

Was no one else thinking this looks like a music video?

[–]JackelPPA 0 points1 point ago

cracked me up

[–]TheLoneCenturian 1 point2 points ago

I don't think the sender realizes how many super bowl rings are out there

[–]guschav 0 points1 point ago

Yeah there are a lot. Probably more than a lot of things. I think the NFL pays for 150 per team (the winners of course) and there have been 46 (?) superbowls. Thats a lot of rings.

[–]geargirl 0 points1 point ago

Cool. I was wondering if these were U-2, SR-71, or shuttle pilots.

[–]sumdog -3 points-2 points ago

It's a cool photo, and I'm sure they're very good pilots if they fly U2s...but I can't help but just think about how much money is wasted each year on military aerospace programs. That jet behind them is probably several schools and teachers salaries for a year.

“In the final sense, … every warship launched, every rocket fired, and every bomb dropped is stealing from those who hunger and are not fed, from those who thirst and are not quenched, and from those who are cold and are not clothed.” -Dwight D. Eisenhower,

[–]A_Chewy_Lemon 3 points4 points ago

Look at it this way. We would need to keep feeding and quenching their thirst over and over. Bombing them is more cost efficient. One time cost.

[–]Aavagadrro 2 points3 points ago

That is a recon plane, they were built in the 50s. Keeping an eye on things is a good way to prevent war. To me, preventing war is a good thing, even if it costs us a bit to fly some 50s era planes at 70k feet.

[–]Bananawoot 0 points1 point ago

WTF? Are you saying let's bomb people instead of feeding them? You must be a nice person.

[–]A_Chewy_Lemon 0 points1 point ago

WTF? Are you saying you don't think explosions and Starbucks handjobs are the most awesome things ever made since sliced bread? You must be really fun at parties.

[–]gnuguy99 0 points1 point ago

Like or hate the military all you want, but to be clear, these programs are essential drivers for economy. These planes require factories, infrastructure and people to build them. They also require scientist and higher education to develop the technology, materials and strategy behind these planes.

This plane actually represents the government spending tax dollars the smartest way it can by funding private industry to push the limits. Thanks to planes like these we have a aerospace industry, gps, satellites and thousands of other things that are a lot more valuable then a single school or teacher.

[–]ndougla2 3 points4 points ago

government spending is a major driver for economy, but it does not have to be spent on weapons. Creating programs for the betterment of society could lead to great discoveries as well, but the military/industrial complex we have only wants to grant funding to research if we can weaponize it. Creating top of the line schools with large government support can produce more highly educated individuals with more potential to further technology and science. I think you are not seeing the true value of schools and teachers. If you were to interview all the intellectual giants, I bet my left nut that they could tell you one specific teacher that sparked their interest in that field. How can you say that is not as valuable as a plane, or a bomb, or whatever. I marvel at the ingenuity it takes to build things like that and like any redblooded american, I think it's cool and all, but the schools provided the education to the people who design those things, and that's why schools and teachers are more valuable than a single aircraft, satellite, etc.

I hope I'm making sense. It's early and I'm not fully awake yet.

TL;DR we wouldn't have those things anyways were it not for schools, which makes the school more valuable than that program.

[–]Bananawoot 0 points1 point ago

You just made me realize how one teacher basically has inspired me to my biggest interest and my career.. Never thought about it that way before now.

[–]ndougla2 0 points1 point ago

try to track that person down and thank them with a call or a letter (if they are still alive, I don't know how old you are)...that will cause them so much joy.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

Dude we spend like 10% of our countrys GDP on our millitary. Thats less then alot of other nations. I think china spens like 12%. Any way, the reason it looks like alot of money being spent on millitary is because its proportonal to our countrys economy. Think of it as insurance. If you want to insure more stuff its going to cost you more money. And america has alot to defend. Not just within our borders but all over the world.

[–]rex3001 2 points3 points ago

To be fair though, the private defense industry that all that money gets pumped into fills the pockets of a much smaller group than if this kind of public money spending were diverted into public infrastructure upgrades/maintenance, building new schools, continuing to employ and hire new teachers, policemen, firefighters, EMTs, keeping hospitals open, etc... the list goes on and on.

i'm sure i'm not the only one but in the last ten years i've seen 4 of about 10 firehouses closed, 2 of about 8 hospitals closed, hundreds of policemen let go including the firemen that were in the closed firehouses, and this was all in MY city. Mind you the local population hasn't decreased at all, there's actually been a small uptick.

it really is just sickening to see defense spending get about 15-20x more money than the education system

[–]sumdog 0 points1 point ago

It's a bad economic model. This attitude is why I left America.

[–]Aavagadrro 0 points1 point ago

They were built in the 50s, sure they have been upgraded but they are old planes, not new ones.

I agree with the sentiment and what Ike said. Education is far better than war and military spending, at least for the people in the country. Education isnt so spiffy for people wanting to make money building armaments or rebuilding countries with no bid contracts.

[–]Errorcod3 12 points13 points ago

I always thought that it was just the SR-71 pilots who wore the orange flight suites.

[–]US_Hiker 15 points16 points ago

It's not a flight suit, it's a space suit. And the U2 and SR-71 pilots both need them for their missions.

[–]Errorcod3 1 point2 points ago

But anytime they were not in their space suit, I.E. normal work day they wore their orange flight suits.

[–]Aavagadrro 1 point2 points ago

They wear green flight suits in Korea, at least the U2 guys I saw did. Dont want to stand out too much.

[–]TomAvian 9 points10 points ago

Hey, who turned out the lights?

[–]RebelLumberjack 3 points4 points ago

The Vashta Nerada can fly planes now? We are doomed.

[–]stoicme 1 point2 points ago

oooh... I'm gonna watch that episode now.

[–]stryrker 16 points17 points ago

Those planes were designed in the 1950s and they still fly today. Incidentally, the plane's chief engineer, Kelly Johnson went on to design the SR-71.

[–]casfacto 3 points4 points ago

Skunkworks FTW

[–]monicled_pirate 6 points7 points ago

They look like they all have moobs

[–]Dronicusprime 2 points3 points ago

Bad ass moobs!

[–]aaronshook 14 points15 points ago

My uncle used to fly these when he was in the Air Force. He would play his Sega Game Gear on the descent because it took so long. Now he's in the FBI.

[–]Fenr-i-r 3 points4 points ago

Is he the one third from the left?

[–]aaronshook 14 points15 points ago

No, second from the right. If you look closely you can see the Sega.

ENHANCE!

[–]danielwb 1 point2 points ago

What a boss.

[–]TurboTrousers 2 points3 points ago

Looks like Daft Punks' backup posse!

[–]richalex2010 0 points1 point ago

I haven't watched as much (just most of the current series, excluding some with Donna), but my first thought from the photo itself and the guy's poses was that it looked like some Doctor Who bad guys.

[–]99CentShrimpCocktail 3 points4 points ago

The dude third from the right has a Texas A&M patch. Interesting...

[–]SgtStiglitz 0 points1 point ago

Hell yea. As an Aggie....shit is legit!

[–]giansolo 15 points16 points ago

I like b&w wallpapers, did some editting on the original, I think it looks pretty cool

[–]DrSalt 7 points8 points ago

Now I'm going to start a band so this can be our album cover.

[–]EpicThomTime 1 point2 points ago

I'm in. Now all we need is a name...

[–]Aavagadrro 3 points4 points ago

How about U2? Oh wait....

[–]xx0ur3n 4 points5 points ago

Great work. If it was touched up to look cell shaded that would be really cool.

[–]FearTheWalrus 1 point2 points ago

I made this one. Looks really cool but there are some shitty artifacts in the sky.

[–]C0mmun1ty 2 points3 points ago

In the world or in America or is it the same either way?

[–]faptag420 4 points5 points ago

I'm going to print that out and tell my future children that the one on the right is of me.

[–]willystylee 2 points3 points ago

But... why.... your right there in the center!

[–]SWI7Z3R 1 point2 points ago

Somebody photoshop out the two light poles in the background please. Honestly, lets fucking do it right.

[–]FearTheWalrus 2 points3 points ago

[–]SWI7Z3R 0 points1 point ago

A million times better, thanks.

[–]macbethy 0 points1 point ago

How exactly are these the most elite pilots?

[–]thatguyinyourkitchen 9 points10 points ago

They fly at ridiculously high altitudes plus they're like mini astronauts. The only people higher are the folks at the ISS.

[–]US_Hiker -1 points0 points ago

Only the highest of the highest skilled pilots are considered for entrance into the program.

[–]macbethy -5 points-4 points ago

It's almost definitely harder to get into NASA or the Red Arrows american equvilant.

[–]US_Hiker -1 points0 points ago

Feel free to show me some numbers and prove it. U2 pilots are top notch, and there has been lots of back and forth from them to astronaut in the past. The plane doesn't even meet AF requirements for safety, handling, etcetera. It's almost impossible to fly, much less in the conditions that they fly it in.

Stop just trying to be a hipster about it.

[–]macbethy -3 points-2 points ago

NASA received 6300 applications for 9-15 places, thats 630 applications per position, show me that flying U-2s is more competative than that.

source: NASA

[–]US_Hiker 0 points1 point ago

Numbers need to be comparable. The AF doesn't release any, and given the very informal start to the U2 application (i.e. many/most are weeded out before even turning one in) it's not that comparable.

[–]JackelPPA 0 points1 point ago

Okay, I just read it and fine, they're aren't the most elite, technically... but they still seem like some of the most elite pilots

[–]danridesthewall 1 point2 points ago

They look like the minions from despicable me

[–]whatsmyPW 0 points1 point ago

The one on the left has his eyes closed.

[–]chameleonjunkie 0 points1 point ago

You should check this guys story out. http://www.sleddriver.com/

[–]Jizzaldo 0 points1 point ago

OP just shooting everywhere for all that sweet karma.

[–]Radioisananagram 0 points1 point ago

front page twice..i applaud you sir

[–]aotar 0 points1 point ago

Why do they look like they have manboobs?

[–]juicystack -1 points0 points ago

Can any aviators explain why the U.S. uses the U2 to this day? It was commissioned in 1955 and its amazing we still use it 57 years later. Are we that far ahead in aviation worldwide?

[–]isthataturtle 0 points1 point ago

They intend on keeping the B-52 bomber in service until at least 2045, about 90 years after it was introduced

if shit still works and you know that the enemy can't do shit about it why change it?

[–]BabyWookie 1 point2 points ago

It's all good, as long as your enemies are a bunch medieval camel jockeys, lacking even the early 60's Soviet technology.

[–]juicystack 0 points1 point ago

Thank you for the answer. Does it make you ponder why we so spend so much more relatively to other countries (china) on our military? (Devils advocate).

[–]juicystack 0 points1 point ago

Side note: don't we have enough stealth subs?

[–]theone181 0 points1 point ago

Most submarines can hold about 20 missiles while the b-52 can hold hundreds of bombs

[–]bst420 0 points1 point ago

this could totally be the cover for a music album

[–]schvenbott 1 point2 points ago

Going to the edge of space at 70,000 ft lookin like thugs

[–]masterboat 0 points1 point ago

Made me think of the MTV Films logo clip.

[–]MilanMacvan 0 points1 point ago

Hardcore

[–]shabinka -1 points0 points ago

This isn't Top Gun

[–]Hooopes 0 points1 point ago

Twelve are about to be disappointed realizing their not going up today.

[–]Bananawoot 0 points1 point ago

The most Elite pilots on earth, and they are all from USA.. wow

[–]Itakethefifth -2 points-1 points ago

These are clearly among the most elite pilots but not necessarily among the most "badass" as these planes are not armed and so can never actively engage in combat.

The SR-71 has been retired for several years now, since 1990. The last flight set multiple new records including going from LA to DC traveling about 2,300 miles in about 64 minutes. Awesome.

[–]rolledback 3 points4 points ago

The plane pictured in this photo is not an SR-71. It is a U-2, the same plane Gary Powers was shot down in. The version pictured here is a trainer variant. And unlike the SR-71, the U-2 is still in service.

Pic: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Lockheed_U-2_TR-1B.jpg

[–]schvenbott 1 point2 points ago

This is a Lockheed Martin U-2. It is currently the highest flying airplane in the world being able to go over 70,000 ft and is arguably one of the most difficult planes to land ever designed. A chase car is needed in order to safely land the plane on the runway. Ask any pilot, these guys are most definitely the epitome of badassery

[–]SgtStiglitz 0 points1 point ago

I don't understand your comment. The SR-71 reference is completely friggin random.

[–]casfacto 0 points1 point ago

Overflying enemy territory while unarmed strikes me as badass.
