As someone who was born in Yugoslavia, I have a few pictures with Santa, with me crying on every single one.

[–]qda 113 points114 points ago

[–]snafeer 138 points139 points ago

[–]fudgie1 30 points31 points ago

I was born in the former Yugoslavia too. When I was a a few years old my grandpa dressed as santa clause for Christmas and I got scared cause I didn't know who it was and started crying. He passed away not long after. Still have a picture of that, it's really sweet actually.

[–]ChillxPenguin 18 points19 points ago

You have a picture of your grandfather as he died?

[–]fudgie1 4 points5 points ago

No, he died a year or two after that. The picture is of me crying as he's dressed as santa.

[–]Katlix 7 points8 points ago

Same here. Though on my pictures there definitely weren't any killer bunnies or psycho clowns.

[–]freecandy_van 50 points51 points ago

[–]B-Rabbit 16 points17 points ago

And Dedek Mraz in Slovenia.

[–]eamantite 20 points21 points ago

Jason Mraz

[–]CalmTheHellDown 14 points15 points ago

Mraz means frost. At least in Czech, but I'm sure in other slavic languages as well.

Jason Mraz himself is of Czech descent. Isn't that a fun fact?

[–]AjdinSamurai 5 points6 points ago

Valja štititi decu nije džaba deda mraz.

[–]401vs401 31 points32 points ago

[–]cangec 2 points3 points ago

[–]kwirky88 17 points18 points ago

eh, something something kid something something picture something grandfather something time.

My serbian isn't very good.

[–]zeex 17 points18 points ago

"I remember when I was a kid and had pictures with santa claus, those were the times..."

[–]B-Rabbit 8 points9 points ago

As a Slovene, I find some parts of Serbo-Croatian really funny.

"klinac" sound like "klinec", which is a dialectic word for "nail" "vremena" sounds like the Slovene "vreme", which means "weather"

So I read it as "Eh, I remember when I was a nail and had my picture taken with Ded Moroz, those were the weathers".

[–]AjdinSamurai 2 points3 points ago

Bila ali nažalost prošla.

[–]DEINSTITUTIONALIZED 77 points78 points ago

Santa has the most impressive eyebrow and most disgusting beard I have ever seen. Also, is that supposed to be some sort of bunny? If it is, it's the poorest quality bunny costume in existence, and it's fucking terrifying. And what does a bunny have to do with Christmas?

[–]trampus1 199 points200 points ago

It's the Christmas Rape Rabbit. It rapes the bad kids that the Rape Clown finds unfuckable. Clowns have much higher standards than rabbits.

[–]laplandsix 45 points46 points ago

and THAT my friend is how you got posted into /r/nocontext

[–][deleted] 73 points74 points ago

context doesn't really improve things in this case

[–]GramarBoi 20 points21 points ago

He's not your friend, pal.

[–]ReddHerring 16 points17 points ago

He's not your pal, bro.

[–]Terminatr117 16 points17 points ago

He's not your bro, buddy.

[–]_gmanual_ 14 points15 points ago

He's not your Buddy, Guy.

[–]Meatwad555 17 points18 points ago

He's not your guy, friend.

[–]skyman724 6 points7 points ago

And the ones who the Rape Rabbit finds unfuckable become their successors.

Such a magical circle of life, isn't it?

[–]sentry07 13 points14 points ago

That's not an eyebrow, that's a bookshelf.

[–]ooNegativeONEoo 5 points6 points ago

He is not bunny. He is The Rake.

[–]asymmetric123 14 points15 points ago

One thing you should know about many yu companies in the old days is that they in christmas times always brought gifts to the children of their employess. I remember this when i was little and often went to daddys work to meet santa who had great gifts (that the company bought). Dont remember if it was the goverment who demanded it to be so. Well i havent heard of any company in the world today that does so. I call that ancient workplace happiness.

[–]Inko21 4 points5 points ago

I remember those too, my mom worked in a hospital and each year there was a gathering of all worker families and children and we would get this huge bag of toys and candy. It was great.

[–]OmegaVesko 3 points4 points ago

My dad's company still does this. They're a candy company, so they give away bags of candy. My mom's school (a private music school) buys toys from retailers and gives those out.

I think both of them do it every year until the child turns 10 or 11.

[–]IAMAHIPO_ocolor 190 points191 points ago

Just a friendly reminder:

Yugoslavia was a communist country, but, under Tito, its president for many decades, it was much less totalitarian than other communist countries. In fact, Tito and Yugoslavia were able to remain seperate from the influences of the other communist bloc countries. Yugoslavia was the founding member of the non-aligned movement, which was founded in its capital city of Belgrade. Yugoslavia traded with both the east and the west, and its borders were fairly open.

[–]weedroid 126 points127 points ago

Then things happened and now it's broken ):

[–]JebatGa 38 points39 points ago

Well only one strong leader could keep it toghether and even then with strong police and military. Posibly with some spying agencies. After his death it was imposible to keep all the nations together. Not with all the hate from the past.

[–]SluttyPhilosopher 45 points46 points ago

jebat ga, tako je.

[–]ImUsingDaForce 5 points6 points ago

[–]thelazarusledd 8 points9 points ago

E jebiga sad...

[–]weedroid 10 points11 points ago

It's not so much that Yugoslavia broke up being the problem, more the protracted and bloody ethnic conflicts that followed

[–]Mevv 6 points7 points ago

It's like the chicken and the egg argument. It broke up because of the ethnic nonsense.

[–]LurksOn1stDates 4 points5 points ago

I'd argue economic problems and the shortsightedness of old communist bureaucrats on how to fix them were the strongest reason for dissolvement. Ethnic strifes magnified by nationalists on every side were just the tip of the iceberg.

[–]shit_lord 6 points7 points ago

Which was spurred on by the nationalist, Every major player in that war has blood on their hands no doubt about that. The only group I ever felt bad for were the Bosniak (muslim Bosnian), they got fucked from all sides even their allies in the war.

[–]NatureGoulet 10 points11 points ago

Upvote for your username. Brilliant!

[–]Halofit 12 points13 points ago

For anyone "Jebat ga" means fuck it.

[–]detroitzoran 56 points57 points ago

I was born in the U.S. to Yugoslavian immigrants. I fondly remember spending my summers with my family back in the 'old country' during the 70's and 80's. They'd send my brother and I back about every other summer. I was young and unaware of politics and governments. I only knew the beauty of the country and the kindness of the people I'd met. As I grew older, I'd listen to people tell me what they thought living in a communist\socialist country was like and usually it would be a Hollywood representation of communism.

Edit: forgot a word

[–]AjdinSamurai 19 points20 points ago

Yes I know it's always like that even today old people and my parents always tell me Yugoslavia was super extra and beautiful...

[–]jeckles 10 points11 points ago

I wish my country was super extra!

[–]AjdinSamurai 3 points4 points ago

Yeah and I wish mine continued to be like that.

[–]detroitzoran 2 points3 points ago

I have friends and family that still go back and it's still beautiful. My family came from the Shar mountian area from a village called Staro Selo.

[–]mister_pants 45 points46 points ago

It's also important to note that, despite all that has happened and common conceptions in Western Europe, people from the Balkans are some of the friendliest, most welcoming folks you'll ever meet.

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]zortor 21 points22 points ago

Same here, buddy. It took me years to understand it, growing up was tough, even in the states. Didn't know who I was, what I was supposed to think, I still don't and I'm 25. I try to call myself both as much as possible, that or Yugoslavian, it works as a pickup line sometimes(gotta make the best of it, that's what our people are known for).

[–]yugoslavic 6 points7 points ago

I agree 100 percent. I dodge the question and try to answer with, "Oh, I'm European.

[–]gnovak99 3 points4 points ago

Same here man... got goosebumps reading your description of it.

[–]twench 32 points33 points ago

So don't mention any of that, just pour the rakije!

[–]Vanilla_Express 6 points7 points ago

Rakije, the solution to all of mans problems.

[–]narcoleptic_mongoose 19 points20 points ago

Hahaha but how many of us are not mixed? I say fuck the old mentality =)

[–]idelovski 5 points6 points ago

I wanted to add something to your post, but then realized how I hate that every topic related to ex-Yu ends up with the war and Chetniks, Ustasas and others. This makes no sense and really should stop at some point.

Did you ever saw Fawlty Towers and the episode The Germans with the tag line: Don't mention the war! Someone should make similar thing, but with Croats, Serbs and the others so we can all go on with our lives without the same topics again and again.

BTW, from the wikipedia: "Everybody thinks that was a joke about the Germans but they missed it. It was a joke about English attitudes to the war and the fact that some people were still hanging on to that rubbish"

[–]JulesVerneFJ 2 points3 points ago

HAHAhah the people wont hate you because you are either Serbian or Croatian in the ex-yu states...they hate you because you are diaspora :D

[–]gjakovar 6 points7 points ago

Well actually if we meet outside Balkans we're all best friends. When we're in Balkans we all hate each other!

[–]smetalo 3 points4 points ago

We have a tendency to judge everyone... think nothing of it.

[–]rospaya 1 point2 points ago

Not to mention that the region is safer than most of Western Europe and the chances of getting mugged or hurt is lower than in most European cities.

[–]DiscoUnderpants 37 points38 points ago

I live and work in London but we have outsourced stuff in Belgrade. I go there once and a while and cannot recommend it highly enough. Serbs are really nice people... the city is a gem and it is wonderful in the summer. The only downside at the moment is that the only way to get directly from London to Belgrade is via JAT... with their creaky 737s.

[–]Markeduno 11 points12 points ago

Its to damn hot here in the summer.

[–]avelertimetr 8 points9 points ago

Not true about JAT. Lufthansa flies there too. But JAT's food service is hands down THE best (the good food calms your fears of every creak)

[–]mister_pants 8 points9 points ago

If you're REALLY lucky, you end up with a turbo-prop plane for the leg to Vienna.

BRRRRRRRRRRRMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM!

[–]CausersOfThis 12 points13 points ago

Hey Reddit, check out this old gem I found.

[–]infested999 2 points3 points ago

Vice on flying to Kazantip: "Were flying with Air Ukraine, this plane has fucking holes in it"

[–]shittysubfilter 7 points8 points ago

Just a friendly correction.

Yugoslavia was a SOCIALIST country.

[–]21000 3 points4 points ago

Tito was dictator. He jailed his political rivals to working camps, thousands of political refugees immigrated to the USA (most in Chicago area), Australia and UK..His secret police assassinated leaders of communist resistance groups in immigration, and even their children. Yeah, so Tito and Yugoslavia were great...

Sincerely, Serbian.

[–]makes_picture_better 11 points12 points ago

Here you go! (slavia)

[–]URPerfect 21 points22 points ago

It wasn't allowed to be called Christmas it was "nova godina" which is a new year, and Santa Clause was "deda mraz" which is Grandpa winter. But yes, some of them fuckers did smelled like 3 pack a day smoking goats...

[–]yugoslavic 6 points7 points ago

Well not really, but close enough. It's grandpa Frost. Mraz is frost. Zima is winter.

[–]forzarikwerz 2 points3 points ago

I remember movie translations while I was a kid in socialist Yugoslavia: every time someone in a movie would say 'Merry Christmas!', they would translate it 'Happy New Year!' That was ideologically appropriate and in a way accurate, because New Year was main winter holiday in Yugoslavia.

[–]melatoninkickingin 20 points21 points ago

I grew up in Yugoslavia and my Christmas' were never like this...

[–]kwirky88 4 points5 points ago

Not everybody got to live somewhere like Belgrade ;)

[–]yugoslavic 6 points7 points ago

Sarajevo is pretty awesome too.

[–]noiserr 2 points3 points ago

I miss it often.

[–]LurksOn1stDates 69 points70 points ago

Fun fact: In Yugoslavia, the socialist answer to Santa Claus was Father Frost, who brought gifts on New Year's. Religious side of my family shares their gifts on Christmas and the atheist side on New Year's.

[–]Elf_Supremacist 21 points22 points ago

Ded Moroz!!! Sounds like a death metal band. Awesome!

[–]rasputine 77 points78 points ago

Father Frost is significantly fucking cooler looking that Santa Clause.

[–]BananeneinkaufGmbH 29 points30 points ago

Pimp My Santa.

[–]SaltyBabe 7 points8 points ago

that beard is out of control!

[–]FTLnu 3 points4 points ago

He's not as cool as Santa Phrase.

[–]gloon 44 points45 points ago

Actually it's Grandpa Frost. Source: Croat myself

[–]paganel 11 points12 points ago

We had the same thing in Romania back in those days, with Grandpa Frost being translated as "Moș Gerilă". Strange, I thought we were the only ones that had replaced Santa Clause :)

[–]Bezbojnicul 3 points4 points ago

[–]ZankerH 14 points15 points ago

Bonus if you had atheist, catholic and orthodox relatives: Gifts on Christmas, new year and gregorian new year.

[–]Mihil 12 points13 points ago

No, Father Frost is way older than socialism. Way, way older...

[–]VidrA 6 points7 points ago

Never received a gift from Santa (the bastard), all of my gifts were on NYE from Dedek Mraz (how we called it Grandpa Frost).

[–]elmariachi1911 1 point2 points ago

Enako.

[–]raizuken 1 point2 points ago

White coat=dedek mraz(thats how we say it in Slovenia) Red coat=santa.

[–]amatmn 22 points23 points ago

I hear this from a number of people. Taking my first trip (finally) to Croatia in ten days. Can't wait to see it.

[–]nadircroatia 6 points7 points ago

[–]amatmn 2 points3 points ago

I have heard lovely things about Dubrovnik. Unfortunately, it is very far from where we will be in Opatija.

[–]lunarjellies 18 points19 points ago

I was not born in Yugo, but I did grow up in Canada under the "nurturing wings" of the Serbian community. Ahem. So, my godfather used to be Santa Claus for Christmas... and on Christmas Eve, after church service, he would come up the back steps into the main hall shouting HO HO HOOOOO... and all the kids would basically run for cover. Why, you ask?

Why would we run for cover? Glad you asked.

He would whip the candy at the kids. I'm talking full sized chocolate bars and mandarin oranges... he would WHIP THEM AT OUR HEADS. And he kept shouting/laughing... "HO HO HOOO MARRY KRISTMASS AHAHAHA" and aim for our heads. Yep.

By the way... we have a fully licensed bar in our church. Parents would just laugh it off, seriously.

[–]Donland 4 points5 points ago

Bars at Serbian Orthodox churches are common I think. There's one in Shepherd's Bush, London.

[–]Matasian 2 points3 points ago

We've got one in River Street, Toronto.

[–]permareddit 4 points5 points ago

This is a terrifyingly accurate description of all Eastern European Santas during those times ...

[–]lunarjellies 2 points3 points ago

Yep... so when the non-Yugo kids at school were all like, "What did YOU get for Christmas?!" I was like... whu... what.... ?! ... YOUR SANTA DOESN'T WHIP MANDARIN ORANGES AT YOUR HEAD?!?! .... he's supposed to fit his fat ass down the chimney and... put... stuff.. GIFTS.. under the tree? What is this sorcery...

[–]permareddit 6 points7 points ago

I'm just happy my country wasn't the only one that gave damn fruits to kids for Christmas :P you're lucky you even got chocolate :'( man those were dark days lol..we've come a long way since '89 but it still doesn't feel that long ago

[–]lunarjellies 3 points4 points ago

Yeah... I had family in Yugo during the crap times.. during all the crap times...

My dad was able to tap into Yugo TV somehow through a satellite dish (fml almost typed dish satellite) and of course we heard what was really going on via telephone. F war, man... F it with a hot pokey stick.

Having been born in Yugoslavia, but also having lived most of my life in the US, I can say that I am damn proud to be Yugoslavian, despite the fact that technically that term is no longer valid...to most. Small country, but damn respectable before the shitstorm happened. From it's refusal to give in to Stalin and the USSR, even after Stalin tried to have Tito assassinated, to it's accomplishments in the world of sports, to the fact that it was a founding member of the non-aligned movement (ignoring both extremes of the cold war), to it simply just being a beautiful, beautiful place. Too bad that Yugoslavia "had to go" in the eyes of the west and east, even though it was a threat to neither, and operated on friendly terms with both. For the east because of it not wanting to join the soviet bloc, and for the west because no way could Europe allow to have a socialist country nearly in the heart of the continent.

Anyway, great place! I recommend people visit it.

It did not 'have to go' at all. Both the east and the west were reluctant to get involved at all because neither had very strong ties to the region and they didn't want to overstep their boundaries. The fact that we as a people could not avoid acting like savages and killing each other is our own problem, not other countries'.

Look up just how "uninvolved" and "uninterested" the Reagan administration was in the dismantling of Yugoslavia. The economy was given "shock treatment" prior to the outbreak of the war.

Is that Krumpus on the right?

[–]well_golly 2 points3 points ago

Damn. It looks like G.W.A.R. teamed up with Die Antwoord and redesigned Christmas in an Eastern-Bloc motif.

Delicious!

Somehow this reminded me of the song Amerika by Rammstein even though it has NOTHING to do with it in any sense at all and the political attacks aren't even close to Yugoslavia.

I'm Croatian (F20), my best friend who's closer to me than my sister is Serb, my other closest friend is a mixture of Serbian, Croatian and Bosnian and my boyfriend is a mix of Croatian, Serbian, Scottish and Pakistani.

All are judged on the content on their character rather than their race and I love them all (and so do my parents). What saddens me the most is hearing that anyone is being judged by their race :(

I've had a friend (Albanian female) who was sent overseas to get married and quit her final year of high school because her parents found out she was dating a Serb. Shit like this needs to stop.

I was born right in the middle of that war and my parents and I lost everything. But even though they're was betrayal and suffering that we were exposed to, my parents always made sure that I learnt to love people for who they are and I'm so grateful that I'm not one of those brainwashed patriotic Croats. I do love my country but will never shun anyone because of what they are.

Yugoslavs get a lot of bad publicity but in reality most are amazing people!
