did you know the guy in the ad was actually italian?

[–]JeanRalfio[S] 470 points471 points ago

and it wasn't even a real tear

[–]Hosfac 148 points149 points ago

So they think he's an Italian pretending to be an Indian and pretending to cry...

[–]TheJokeTerminator 51 points52 points ago

Oh makes more sense I thought they thought he was a sissy.

[–]LordOfTheManor 22 points23 points ago

Damn it boy, you terminated that joke. Stop doing that to people!

[–]Belaires 6 points7 points ago

Say what you want, but he'll be bach

[–]The_Painted_Man 8 points9 points ago

And i will be Mozart.

[–]SanchoDeLaRuse 2 points3 points ago

I think they think he's an Italian pretending to be an Indian and pretending to cry...

[–]TheShader 11 points12 points ago

So you're saying that he's a dude playing a dude, disguised as another dude?

[–]McShizzL 8 points9 points ago

never go full retard

[–]yourpenisinmyhand 14 points15 points ago

I imagine you like this

[–]mrmaveric 5 points6 points ago

I was far too attracted to that animated character as a kid.

[–]brosenfeld 18 points19 points ago

[–]JeanRalfio[S] 5 points6 points ago

If only I had this picture before

[–]evanthesquirrel 4 points5 points ago

Do yourself a favor, don't turn around.

Of course not. Guidos do NOT cry.

[–]MetacomCreative 20 points21 points ago

For more fun (read: depressing) facts about the role of the American Indian in Hollywood and pop culture, check out the documentary Reel Injun. Highly recommend.

Just curious, OP, what nation do you hail from?

[–]arkanis50 4 points5 points ago

Yeah I caught Reel Injun on TV by accident one afternoon and it was a really interesting documentary, even as a non-American.

[–]deadendcruiser 3 points4 points ago

I watched that too. My grandmother is native, I don't consider myself one of course, but she's pretty into it. She loved talking about the things I saw in the film.

[–]jacks4se 1 point2 points ago

I don't think you can just...like...consider yourself Native. I mean either you are or you aren't it's not a race people can just decide to be regardless if the media will lead you to believe otherwise.

[–]deadendcruiser 2 points3 points ago

Sorry let me explain. My grandmother is half Cherokee. Her mother grew up on the reservation and met my great grandfather because he was an English teacher. They had my grandma and her siblings off the reservation and because of the stigma they never put that they were native on their birth certificate. When asked what their race was they told people they were black Irish. I'm very white, blonde hair, green eyes and the only way I look like my grandma is that I have that square jaw and cheek bones. So I'm not going to claim a culture that I really don't have any connection to. I'm only 1/16th, I think that's just silly.

[–]Sothisisme 2 points3 points ago

It's a little more complicated. I mean when your Grandmother is black and your Grandfather is white, you can still identify as black, or both and no one looks at your weird. The same is not true for being Native. There is often an additional step of "do you have tribal enrollment?" which seems to give you the right to claim the heritage (to some people, not all) just doesn't apply to other ethnicities.

[–]pinkocommie 13 points14 points ago

The guy in the commercial was Iron Eyes Cody. Not a native American. Cool commercial though. Ran it all the time back in the 70's. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iron_Eyes_Cody

[–]Jalfredprufrockshire 4 points5 points ago

I learned this fact from watching The Sopranos.

[–]Ian1732 4 points5 points ago

what even is the ad for, anyway?

[–]Junk_In_My_Bunk 18 points19 points ago

Littering

[–]MattTheGeek 24 points25 points ago

yep, back in the day they had ads for littering--things sure have changed!

[–]SOLIDninja 5 points6 points ago

Remember the hole in the Ozone layer that they wouldn't shut up about in the early 90's? I wonder what ever happened with that.....

Where the fuck is Captain Planet when you need him?

[–]Jman5 22 points23 points ago

What happened was Congress outlawed CFCs and we got our shit together before it was too late.

If you go back and look at the language the lobbyists were using, it's practically identical to what the climate deniers say today.

[–]gsfgf 10 points11 points ago

Except that the saving ozone layer actually proved to be an unusually easy fix.

[–]noyurawk 14 points15 points ago

Uh, we took measures to fix it? I hear the hole will be completely gone in a few decades.

[–]SOLIDninja 3 points4 points ago

Oh. Well, then... Have an upvote and I'll be on my way.

[–]davesfakeaccount 5 points6 points ago

Hey, I need to talk to you about my car door.

[–]I_Key_Cars 14 points15 points ago

Did you park like an asshole?

[–]mustgofaster 8 points9 points ago

Littering and.....?

[–]TheShader 5 points6 points ago

Smokin' the reefer!

[–]bizfamo 2 points3 points ago

thank you, i finally know what dave chappelle was talking about now.

[–]JeanRalfio[S] 3 points4 points ago

Little known fact: That's Elizabeth Warren before she was a millionaire 1%er Washington insider.

[–]scrtagent101 81 points82 points ago

When I worked at the UN for Native Americans, a lot of the issues were environmental. Like "hey, quit doing shit to our mountains. We love those mountains." Or "hey, you realize you're hurting people by blowing up land for mines, right?"

TL;DR: A ton of Native Americans are kind of like that, but for good reason, but no one listens.

[–]Ragnalypse 23 points24 points ago

Mountains are people too. Spirit people. Whoaaaaa

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points ago

"Hey, Chavez, how come they ain't killing us?"

"Because we're in the spirit world, asshole. They can't see us."

[–]raskolnikov- 189 points190 points ago

Hey, if you're 1/16th Cherokee, I just wanted to let you know that nobody cares.

[–]gorgen002 108 points109 points ago

People who are like "MY GRANDMA WAS 1/5 CHEROKEE!" ruin it for people like me who's 50% Lumbee.

Also fuck the Cherokees for blocking federal recognition of Lumbees.

[–]TheShader 108 points109 points ago

Lumbees sounds like the offspring of lumber jacks and bees.

[–]gorgen002 36 points37 points ago

Well, I'm pretty tall but I have a high voice. Satisfactory?

[–]TheShader 10 points11 points ago

For once I was entire accurate in my wild assumptions! I'm writing this day in my calendar, thank you, good sir!

[–]Belaires 1 point2 points ago

Lincoln? You're back! Look, I don't know what to tell you. The U.S. is in some shit. Can you fix it? By the way, were/are you gay?

[–]gnomadic 4 points5 points ago

If you'll forgive me for even mentioning this for the sake of discussion, I know I have a bit of Cherokee and Narragansett ancestry and I like having it, but since so many people go around announcing it like it's an uncommon thing I realize how obnoxious and insignificant it is and it makes me feel bad for being happy that it's there. :( For some reason I have darker hair and skin then the rest of my sisters, so I looked like this when I was little http://i.imgur.com/ps0Z9.png and everyone gave me nicknames either referring to me as native american or asian. A lot of them have stuck over the years (once someone even asked my adopted sister if I was the adopted one). It's all in jest, but because I grew up being around that, I think having any sort of native american heritage became a larger part of my sense of identity than it should have. I'm torn between wanting to learn more because I find it interesting, and staying far away because I don't want to offend those who do have a genuine native american ancestry by claiming to be something I'm not. It's an odd mix of pride and shame.

[–]gorgen002 1 point2 points ago

Honestly, I think you look more Native than I do. I'm 50% with dark skin, hair and eyes, but I look exactly like my white father with a tan. I think when your heritage is visible enough that people ask "What are you" it's one thing to get involved and proud of it, that's fine. But I think it's kind of dumb when Jessica Whitegirl proclaims her 1/16th somethingtribe as a reason to send scholarships her way.

You could probably take my place at the Native American meetings, I identify waaaay more with my white side than my native side anyways.

[–]AfroKona 18 points19 points ago

Half Chippewa here. I agree.

[–]PartyBusGaming 21 points22 points ago

1/64th here. You're much more chippewa than me.

I can tell because Math.

[–]fuzzymanpeech73 40 points41 points ago

For real. That pisses me off and I'm full Navajo.

[–]awesomeideas 70 points71 points ago

Never go full Navajo.

[–]mcon87 7 points8 points ago

Once you go Navajo, you never go...to another ho?

[–]jcopzzz 27 points28 points ago

I've always wanted to be friends with someone who's Navajo.... Will you be my Navajomie?

[–]spongeyjew 6 points7 points ago

Do you speak the language? Do people ever ask you if you're mexican?

[–]Ziphos 21 points22 points ago

Im full Navajo and sadly I don't speak it :( I live in Phoenix, AZ and it's kinda weird, white people can always tell im native, but mexicans always assume im one of their own.

[–]zryii 11 points12 points ago

I have a friend who is full Navajo but his legal last name is "Mexican". I feel bad.

[–]Aero_ 8 points9 points ago

Everyone in the world had a great-great-grandparent that did it with a Cherokee.

[–]lolturtle 2 points3 points ago

You know that's right. Happened in my own family tree.

[–]professional_here 9 points10 points ago

Actually the government cares since I get my college education for free. And I'm 1/16th.

[–]twistedfork 6 points7 points ago

That must be based on your state and tribe. I'm 1/4 and I didn't get anything for free (I did get a scholarship from my tribe).

[–]PartyBusGaming 10 points11 points ago

I'm 1/64th chippewa. I'm tan as fuck, and that's it.

Even I don't care.

[–]PirateRobotNinjaofDe 13 points14 points ago

I'm just impressed that you know your family tree back that far.

[–]PartyBusGaming 6 points7 points ago

I even have the official blood degree for it. No clue why. It'll never be useful.

[–]Killerklown77 19 points20 points ago

I'm 1/8th Ojibwe, and I take full pride in my heritage. I attend Pow-Wows and visit my land every year; yet again, my tribe never sold any of their rights for per-cap. Even my kids who will be 1/16th will be able to hunt and fish anywhere in North Eastern Wisconsin.

Edit: Spelling.

[–]Shagomir 6 points7 points ago

I'm a few generations past that, and I get nothing. I am more Finnish (1/4th) than Ojibwe (1/32nd or 1/64th, it depends on which census forms my ancestors were correctly listed on).

[–]Killerklown77 4 points5 points ago

If you go up to Ashland, even if you're only 1/32nd or 1/64th you can get adopted on to the rolls, which entitle you to fishing and hunting without licenses in Ashland. The Ojibwe have no blood quantum requirements. You just have to bring them records that your mother/father were Ojibwe and their parents and so forth.

[–]twistedfork 2 points3 points ago

You must be a Yooper with a heritage like that. I used to think a "Finndian" was a real thing when I was a kid because that's what my folks called my brother and I. I'm 1/4 Finn, 1/4 Chippewa.

[–]aggykryss 2 points3 points ago

I think OP was referring to people such as myself (white as the whitest white who ever whited) who have some sort of Native American relative somewhere in the distant past and have no cultural affiliation with any tribe yet try to claim that they are "Native American, too," not people such as you who actually take pride and engage in the culture.

Someone somewhere told me I was 1/32, but I'd be damned if I said I was Native American. Not out of shame, but because I've always lived and identified as a white person and feel it would be disrespectful to try to claim that heritage... I'd never deny it was part of my racial makeup, but it is most certainly not part of my culture or history. Does that make sense? I'm rambling.

[–]Killerklown77 1 point2 points ago

It makes complete sense, my dad raised me and my brother around our heritage, not on the reservation, but in the sense that, no matter how much Native blood you have running through your veins, it's still apart of you, and I whole heartily embraced that. Everytime I've come across some racial question or someone saying, "You're just a white boy." I've corrected them and said, "No, I'm Native American."

[–]ramiregr 3 points4 points ago

Except you can get cool perks for being 1/16 or even 1/64 depending on your tribe, like scholarships and such for school.

[–]alex_sucks 2 points3 points ago

admissions cares

[–]AnonymousHipopotamus 56 points57 points ago

As an old, shirtless, Italian dude?

[–]Nicoleness 11 points12 points ago

I'm a Mohican from northern Wisconsin. : )

[–]Ihadacow 23 points24 points ago

You can't be. I saw The Last of the Mohicans, dammit!

[–]Nicoleness 7 points8 points ago

We still exist, but are very few.

[–]notwantedonthevoyage 2 points3 points ago

That would be the Beothuks from Newfoundland that died out, probably among others.

[–]redgroupclan 3 points4 points ago

Better get to fucking then!

[–]gorgen002 2 points3 points ago

Do chicks dig that you're the last of something?

[–]Nicoleness 11 points12 points ago

Hahaha. I am a chick.

[–]gorgen002 4 points5 points ago

Directed by M Night Shamalan.

[–]JoeyTexas 8 points9 points ago

"Cynthia used to drink Slurm..."

[–]lazerllama10 29 points30 points ago

I also am majoring in environmental science, high five :D

But I'm Indian, and most people expect me to be like a computer engineer or something, and when I tell them they're like "Oh...that's cool, I guess." xD

[–]JeanRalfio[S] 30 points31 points ago

My mom's Indian and my dad's Norwegian so I'm extremely white and no one really believes me until I show them tribal ID

[–]Merinovich 23 points24 points ago

That pic is so fake, everybody knows vikings didn't have horns on their helmets..

[–]JeanRalfio[S] 4 points5 points ago

Touche

[–]4nonymo 39 points40 points ago

Wait, are you native American or Indian or did you think lazerllama10 meant he was native American, because I think he meant he's Indian, like...from India.

[–]JeanRalfio[S] 35 points36 points ago

Ahhh sorry for the confusion. I am Native American but because of Columbus's dumbass most say Indian and I've always just used both because I've never found it offensive like some would.

[–]Nerfherder32 27 points28 points ago

I don't find Indian offensive, I just think its annoying. I'm native American too :P

[–]JeanRalfio[S] 24 points25 points ago

Whoop whoop! A lot of people, myself included were taught it was Indian on tv and in school and stuff so it's whatevs. If I get asked what Indian I am I usually say the feather not the dot haha.

[–]Nerfherder32 15 points16 points ago

The only time I get offended is when my asshole history teacher jokes about how white people took over America, they killed thousands upon thousands of Native Americans, how is that funny?

[–]JeanRalfio[S] 31 points32 points ago

I was the only Native in my class so whenever they were mentioned in class everyone would turn around and look at me and assume I knew everything about every tribe. The only thing that really pisses me off is the term Indian giver to describe someone who gave you something and wanted it back. We didn't give whitey the land, they tricked us into signing it over saying it was a peace treaty when we didn't even think you could "own" land, and were the assholes for wanting it back.

[–]fastjeff 15 points16 points ago

Same thing always pops in my head when I hear the term 'Indian Giver'. lol

'Indian Summer' bugs the hell out of my sister too. I just think it's funny.

First Nations here. (for the people wondering, that's Canadian for Native American. We just started saying to bug people)

[–]tshirtofdoriangray 12 points13 points ago

I would agree First Nations is a better term. Since we now know that no humans originated in America. Call it waves of immigration, or mutilation...

[–]Coxspeach 10 points11 points ago

I'm a native American as well (my tribe comes south) and I've always been given awkward looks when my class would talk about native Americans. I think what pisses me off is being, not confused, but, assumed to be Mexican, Arabian, or even, I shit you not, Egyptian because I have a scar that looks like a thick line next to my eye. Most of the time, though, my friends just ask for a rain dance when it's dry. It works. Sometimes.

[–]JeanRalfio[S] 7 points8 points ago

I too dance for rain for my friends. They've always given me shit about it so I figured if you can't beat em join em.

[–]I_TYPE_IN_ALL_CAPS 8 points9 points ago

everyone would turn around and look at me and assume I knew everything about every tribe.

they tricked us into signing it over

ANNOYED WHEN PEOPLE EXPECT HIM TO SPEAK FOR ALL TRIBES; SPEAKS FOR ALL TRIBES.

[–]JeanRalfio[S] 15 points16 points ago

Well shit you got me

[–]badger_the 4 points5 points ago

Haha! You know your target audience well. I started saying native american or north american natives (to be more accurate) when I took a Native North American Studies anthro course. Still one of my favorite classes to this day.

[–]JeanRalfio[S] 2 points3 points ago

I took one when I went to UWGB that was pretty awesome too.

[–]fuzzymanpeech73 2 points3 points ago

I am also Native American! :D

[–]konkeydong 2 points3 points ago

[–]ZeMilkman 4 points5 points ago

You'll be delighted to know that if you ever come to Germany we differentiate between the two different "Indians".

Native Americans are Indianer and Indians are Inder.

[–]konkeydong 1 point2 points ago

[–]Hyperian 6 points7 points ago

Tech support indian, not casino indian

[–]RAND0M-HER0 19 points20 points ago

My boyfriend is 1/2 Mohawk 1/2 Irish. I do not want to see him drunk. Ever.

[–]gnomishmidgets 2 points3 points ago

You've never seen your 1/2 irish boyfriend drunk...calling bullshit here

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago

As a Native/Irish mix, I can tell you: it gets messy. Keep him away from Jager and whiskey in particular.

[–]Gudgrim 3 points4 points ago

I'm a native Norwegian, does that count? Also doing master in environmental science :)

[–]CloseCannonAFB 3 points4 points ago

My wife is 3/4 Creek, but got the skin tone of the other 1/4- Irish.

[–]matt-383 2 points3 points ago

Environmental science major here as well. But I'm white, so everyone expects me to be a pot smoking hippie.

[–]grinde 1 point2 points ago

ESci majors, unite!

[–]weredinosaur 14 points15 points ago

More like this

[–]Thefriendlyfaceplant 5 points6 points ago

Environmental Science is a relatively new study so I suspect it will be radically different depending on where you live. In the Netherlands you're basically groomed to become a civil servant.

[–]VHStevan 5 points6 points ago

Do yourself a favor, do not turn around.

[–]JD_Blunderbuss 2 points3 points ago

YAAAAAAAAAAIIIIIIII

...I told you not to turn around.

[–]shaleesmo 6 points7 points ago

my sister in law always asks me why I don't shed a tear whenever I see my country being raped with litter...

I tell her it is because I've simply given up and accepted the fate of our land...

[–]Cory_Lahey 3 points4 points ago

This shit really got me as a kid. Apparently my mom littered once when I was 6, I saw and started screaming "YOUR MAKING THE MAN CRY!"

[–]MalinaRana 7 points8 points ago

I have a friend that is Navajo, graduated with an environmental science degree and then went back to AZ and worked at a coal mining company. He felt like a terrible Native, but I don't think he cried about it. A job is a job nowadays.

[–]40ozofoe 24 points25 points ago

[–]RabbaJabba 16 points17 points ago

To be fair, there are plenty of (actual) Native Americans who can't speak their people's language.

[–]livevil999 19 points20 points ago

There are also plenty of people everywhere who don't speak the language of their great great grandparents.

[–]mysticrudnin 9 points10 points ago

In fact, no one speaks the exact same language of their great-great-grandparents. Language change is a bit faster than that.

[–]anddrewg2007 2 points3 points ago

I don't know whether to laugh or cry.

[–]DrMasterBlaster 3 points4 points ago

I immediately thought of this commercial before I even clicked the link.

[–]Mitz510 3 points4 points ago

Do you at least have a darkish Native American skin color tone or are you some white guy who claims to be 8% Native American because their great great great great uncle was one? I know A LOT of white people who never say they are Caucasian/White they tell you some longass story on why they aren't white.

[–]youhavethenerve 0 points1 point ago

White is not an ethnicity. It's a social construct.

[–]BrittanyRenegade 2 points3 points ago

I fucking knew it was gonna be this .gif before it even loaded... Does that mean I'm gettin good at reddit?

[–]Hope_Eternity 3 points4 points ago

Yay! Environmental science! I'm majoring in that too! And since I'm focusing more on biology they told me I don't have to take calculus! Whoo!

[–]winterandautumn 1 point2 points ago

So how high does the sycamore grow?

[–]Thevents 2 points3 points ago

Dude, you know would be cool as a Native American majoring in Env. Science? If you could train yourself to shed a single tear on command. Imagine the possibilities.

[–]cberra88 4 points5 points ago

Up vote from an Environmental Science Major

[–]Svarazics 7 points8 points ago

This was the commercial that turned me into a tree loving hippy (death rock) environmentalist (pagan). Thanks for the reminder, gonna go pick up my cig butts now.

[–]crapshot 7 points8 points ago

I've heard that littering was a way of life before that commercial aired.

[–]4-bit 5 points6 points ago

It was. I remember my parents used to just throw the mcdonalds boxes out the window on road trips.

[–]DarthNihilus1 2 points3 points ago

"I wanted to test this dude, to see if he was really Indian. I had a gum wrapper in ma pocket. So I balled that shit up, and threw it on the floor.

All of a sudden he got one tear jus coming out his eye.

-dave chappelle

[–]AL_MI_T_1 4 points5 points ago

I once threw a can on the ground in front of my Native American friend and yelled at him to cry

[–]the_trepverter 2 points3 points ago

Glad you have a sense of humor about it.

[–]ChiefShittingBear 2 points3 points ago

Yeah, we never really get to play ourselves.

[–]fcwolfey 2 points3 points ago

weird I'd expect you to be opening a club called entertainment 720

[–]gypsycamptrash 2 points3 points ago

Native here majoring in eating McDonalds. I shed no tears.

[–]KatGunz 0 points1 point ago

I just don't understand why no one talks about how he's crying out of only one eye. Is that not weird? I personally have never seen anyone cry out of one eye like that.

[–]coatrack68 1 point2 points ago

Yeah, pretty much. I had that image in my mind as I click on the link. Sorry.

[–]JMGurgeh 2 points3 points ago

Environmental Science? Do yourself a favor and switch to geology or civil engineering. Same work on the other side if you want it (plus far more options), but you get paid much better. Seriously. Like, 1.5x-2x the starting salary for pretty much the same job.

[–]olioster 2 points3 points ago

No one in college today knows about those PSAs.

[–]Nebz604 0 points1 point ago

They see you as an Italian man dressed as an Indian?

[–]jturkish 5 points6 points ago

My grandma is 1/8th Navajo

Bad joke sorry

My daughter is half Sioux, she's pretty

[–]TrindadeDisciple 0 points1 point ago

Yeah my grandma is 1/8 Blackfoot

[–]endercoaster 3 points4 points ago

That's just frostbite.

[–]gorgen002 4 points5 points ago

That means you're probably white!

[–]Smeagol3000 2 points3 points ago

Only us old farts who still remember that commercial.

[–]gorgen002 3 points4 points ago

Old farts suck. Move over and make some room for the young, fresh farts.

[–]periodoirep 0 points1 point ago

I watched this commercial daily in the middle of Marty Stauffer's, or Lorne Greene's show. I forgot which.

[–]StiffSox 0 points1 point ago

Your tear moves me good sir.

[–]inactive_ninja 0 points1 point ago

Is that the Indian from Ernest Goes to Camp?

[–]woahdaddyhotmama 0 points1 point ago

white man's just jealous

[–]Margatron 1 point2 points ago

A recreation would make for a good profile pic.

[–]bonermcface -1 points0 points ago

It's like an asian majoring in math.

As a former environmental science major who couldn't find a job besides lab tech slave and is now back in school for civil engineering. CHANGE YOUR MAJOR! An environmental/civil/bioenvironmental engineering degree will be much more useful.

Diluted Cherokee here. I am in the same boat. When asked, just tell them you are Hekawi. It filters out the dumbasses and jokes.

Oh, and put it on your resume. Companies get minority credits for Native Americans.

I read somewhere that after three generations, the genes that give us absolutely-dark (read: tan all the time) skin is bred out. And then just some of us tan, while others don't. Shit cray.

I already knew before clicking what this was going to be. Props for the setup, negs for the predictability.
